Director's Message The aims of this Festival of Flowers and Music are twofold, First and foremost to raise money in order to help re-roof this fine Victorian church dedicated to The Sacred Heart of Jesus. The work which will cost in the region of between ÂŁ25,000 and ÂŁ30,000 must, we are told be carried out during the next two years.

Secondly we have aimed to bring to Exeter artists who in the normal run of things would not have visited the city, namely Mary O'Hara and the Penydarren Welsh Voice Choir. We also had secured the services of four members of The Royal Shakespeare Company to give a performance of "Country Contentments" on the evening of Thursday July 8th, but unfortunately this has had to be cancelled owing to the fact that this company had double booked this production and it was performed in Knightshayes Court Tiverton only two weeks ago. We felt that the dates of that performance and ours were so close that we decided to cancel.

However I hope that you enjoy the floral side of this Festival and both concerts.

If you have any questions or difficulties please do not hesitate to ask any of our marshals for help. I would like to take this opportunity of thanking all the members of the committee and our parishioners for all their time and effort in staging this festival, I hope it will be the first of many.

Mary O'Hara In Concert

MARYO'HARA The bare chronicle of Mary O'Hara's life contains dangerous elements of sentimentality. A young beautiful singer falls in love with a handsome doomed poet. He dies after 15 months of marriage. She withdraws from the world, enters a monastery and emerges after 12 years to pick up the threads of a singing career, with fantastic success.

There were concerts, radio shows, her own television series on BBC - all before she reached the age of 21. She married a young poet Richard Selig but was widowed within 15 months. After four more years of performing her music all over the world Mary O'Hara gave up singing and entered an English Benedictine Monastery, where she stayed for 12 years. But though Mary O'Hara turned her back on music, lovers of music did not forget her and her albums continued to sell in her absence.

When her monastic sojourn was over and she once more took up singing, she quickly added new friends to old. Concert tours of U.K. and Ireland followed. Sold out concerts at the Royal Festival Hall and Royal Albert Hall in London. Carnegie Hall in New York, Massey Hall in Toronto, a week at the London Palladium, tours of Australia, New Zealand and across the Atlantic - Mary O'Hara was back Her best selling autobiography, "The Scent of the Roses" tell its own story.

On Eamon Andrew's ITV programme "This is your Life" the late Joyce Grenfell remarked: "Mary's God-given gift was her voice and what is surely meant for her is to sing to as many people as possible."

This Mary O'Hara continues to do.

The theme of this flower festival is taken from the hymn "All creatures of our God and King" by W. D. Draper (1855-1933) which in turn is based on the prayer of St. Francis of Assisi (1182-1226) whose 800th. birthday we celebrate this year.
