elcome to this summer’s edition of Marymount Matters on the subject of community.

In what has been an extraordinary year, it has been so heartening to see the sense of community at Marymount London remain strong and provide a powerful anchor in the unchartered seas of the pandemic. Being a part of a community can make us feel as though we are a part of something greater than ourselves.Since joining this wonderful community in January, it is clear that one key element which makes Marymount such a fantastic place to learn and work is its commitment to make the world a better place. Being a Marymount girl involves more than solely achieving one’s academic potential and one’s rst ( choicecareerpath,itisamuchmoreholisticendeavour.Weareve proud to celebrate the indisputable academic success of our graduates, but we are most proud of the qualities of character, leadership, social consciousness andphilanthropypersoni(edbyourstudents.Theyaspiretobetheve they can be and to utilise their many gifts and talents for the greater good.

Compassionate action is woven into everyday life at Marymount, in order that it is carried forward into students’ lives beyond Kingston.

CONTINUING THE MISSION Between its foundation in 1955 and 2017, Marymount London was the homeofdozensofRSHMSisters.Theirspirits,alongsidethoseofMother Butler and Father Gailhac, permeate the walls, rooms and lawns of our beautiful school, forming the threads that bind our community together.

As the RSHM Sisters begin to entrust more and more Marymount schools to lay leaders, how can the Marymount London community continue their Mission?

T

o continue the inspiring mission of our founders, and as dedicated IB learners, thelayleadershipofMarymounthasspentmuchtimethisyearre(ectingon how the Marymount mission might be brought to life. In consultation with Governors,alumnae,parents,studentsandfaculty,ave( yearstrategyhasemerged,and will be unveiled this September.

One of the key points considered was maintaining the spirit of the RSHM as Sisters step back from traditional leadership roles. Keeping their light shining is vital, not only as it forms a crucial part of our heritage, but also because it has shaped our common Marymount language. As mentioned in this issue by our Valedictorian, Lisa Ichikawa, the language of Marymount is understood between and amongst every generation ofstudents.Girlsbecomeuent ( inourschoolvision¥Thatall (Johnmayhavelifeƒ 10:10) and the RSHM School Goals during their time at Marymount as these form the backboneoftheirlearning,bothinMiddleandHighSchool.TheIBMiddleYears ProgrammeandtheDiplomat ( seamlesslywithintheRSHMframework,withtheir shared emphasis on diversity, personal growth, and love of learning.

S r . R o s a l e e n S h e r i da n RSHM (1932-2021)

I

n April 2021 Sr. Rosaleen Sheridan RSHM,ourlongest-serving Headmistress at Marymount London, passedawaypeacefullyTuesdayafternoon in the RSHM Retirement Center in Tarrytown,NewYork.Shewasaged.8 Born in Ireland on September 2, 1932, Sr. Rosaleen Sheridan was part of a large familyofve ( brothersandthreesisters.

From a very early age she felt a great loveforGod.Whensheturnedshe ,81 decided to join the Institute of the Religious of the Sacred HeartofMary.Re(ectingonthislife-changingdecision,Sr. Rosaleen once said: “In my heart I knew I had a calling to give my life to God. I knew I only had one life, and that I would give it the best try I could.”

Sr.RosaleenjoinedMarymountLondoninShe .0891 taught psychology, conducted guidance and religion courses and was also a Boarding Moderator, before becoming Headmistress. In their yearbook dedication to Sr. Rosaleen, theSeniorClassofsaid, 5891 “Sister’s devotion to Marymount has gained her the respect and love of faculty and students alike.”

Sr. Rosaleen served as Head of School of Marymount London for thirteen years, between 1990 and 2003. During her time as Headmistress, Sr. Rosaleen oversaw many developments to the campus, including the addition of the 'Our Lady's' building (which now houses our wonderful Library), led the School through its 40th anniversary celebrations and was at the helm when we stepped into the 21st century. She was a powerful and lifelong advocate for the IB and was instrumental in ensuring that Marymount Londonwasoneoftherst ( schoolsintheworldtoadoptthe Middle Years Programme, which it did in 1995.

Marymount’s Deputy Head (Academic) Mr. Marcou, describedSr.Rosaleenas¥someoneutterlydedicatedtothe formation of the whole person., Sr. Rosaleen was, above all, an incredible example of the RSHM mission in action.

She gave of herself and her many gifts with such love and kindness to all those who were lucky enough to be part of thecommunityunderherstewardship.ƒ Mrs. Langan, Deputy Head (Safeguarding) who joined MarymountunderSr.Rosaleen,saidofher;¥Shewasaforce of nature, passionate about girls' education and had high expectationsforherstudentsandsta(This . wasalldonewith kindness, wisdom, good humour and a smile suggesting that shewasdeterminedtohavesomefunalongtheway.ƒ In the 1995 yearbook, on the occasion of our 40th anniversaryinLondon,Sr.Rosaleenre(ected:¥the chain which bound each class was strengthened by the contributions of everyone in the group, and the heritage they left you will treasure and pass on, through your own excellence,tofutureclasses.ƒAsacommunity,wetreasure her contribution both to the RSHM and to our school. We will endeavour to pass on, through the excellence of our students, the heritage she has left us.

Although my time at Marymount was brief, it was probably one of the most impactful experiences of my life for a number of reasons and Sr. Rosaleen was one of the primary ones. My time there made such an impression on me that I returned years later and got married in the chapel on campus. My sister, an alum and valedictorian of MMI, was my maid of honour, and one of my best friends from MMI was a bridesmaid.

I was 15 years old when I was preparing to embark on my journey to Marymount in 1990. I lived in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia at the time with my family. Sr. Rosaleen’s love for God was palpable. After my Elena Oñoro (C lass of 19 motherandsisterleftfortheUnitedStates,Ifeltsoalone 99) and scared. Sr. Rosaleen was always there to provide reassuranceandsuchdeep,genuinecare.Therewas more than one occasion that I found myself crying in hero(ce,andshewouldlistenandcomfortme.

hese lines are taken from Sujata Bhatt’s any one of my classmates in 10 or even 20 years' poem, Search For My Tongue and in timetoexplainphraseslike,¡Thatallmayhav some ways, I can identify with the life¢;or¡Allarewelcomeinthisplace¢,thent speaker’s struggle in this poem. As a child, I would all still be able to do so. Perhaps this is only saw limitations in my ability to speak becauseMarymounthasbeen,our¡kokyou¢,our EnglishandJapanese;inbothlanguages,words home where we grew up. didnotow, ( wordsdidnotsoundright,words Although I may forget the exact title of my weresomehownotenough.Unfortunately, Chemistry IA in 10 years’ time, I will never my younger self did not have the maturity or forget our legendary prank day, Halloween insight to always appreciate the two languages performance, International Day, and just inside my brain. ur mindset is a set of beliefs that shape the way that we behave, even though we might not realise it. Carol Dweck, a researcher at Stamford university, has carried out years of research into this. She explains that our mindset predetermines our interpretation of and response to the situations that we face. It shapes our relationship with others, our relationship with ourselves, and so my advice to you today is: choose your mindset wisely.

Whichever mindset you lean into more will have an impact on your life.

Our mindsets play a critical role in how we manage situations, when there is adversity, uncertainty and things don’t go the way that we had planned. I’d like to tell you a brief story about the power of a growth mindset in the context of my work.

I work at Google on projects at the intersection of creativity, technology and innovation. Over the last few years I’ve been working on making products at Google accessible to everyone, including people who have motor impairments thata(ecttheirspeechandmobility.Manyareinwheelchairs,orbed-boun unable to move their bodies or speak. With my team, I started to think about how we could use creativity and technology to help. I learnt about a technology calledEyegaze.

Imagine a cursor on a screen that moves wherever you are looking on your screen.ThatisEyegaze.It¢sacleverpieceoftechnology,thathasonlybeen onlargescreens,anditrequiresspecialEyegazeequipment,bothofwhich expensive and not very easy to move around. We thought: what if, somehow, wecouldhaveEyegazeworkonthesmall,relativelyinexpensivescreent many of us have today in our pockets: our mobile phone?

2021 Award Recipients WequicklydiscoveredthatEyegazeonmobilewasn¢tworking.Wehad Valedictorian built several prototypes and all our tests kept failing. We realised why it had Lisa Ichikawa neverbeendonebefore:itwasreallychallengingandcomplexwork!The problemwasthedi(cultyEyegazehadinaccuratelytrackingtheeyemovement  on such a small screen.

We found ourselves at a crossroads: after so many failed attempts, we could TheGoldMedal admitthatitwasn¢tgoingtowork,andwecouldstoptheprojectthe ( xed ( for the most outstanding mindset approach). Alternatively, we could change tack and keep trying (the CAS Program growth mindset approach). We decided to keep at it. In the end, the solution Adeoyin Adewunmi was to change the interaction entirely. From a pointer that mapped your eye movements across a screen, to simplifying the interaction to just three gestures:  lookleft,lookright,lookup.Thisresultedinaverydi(erentidea,butitstill worked.Itmeantimmenseamountsofe(ortacrossmanyteamsglobally,butSportswoman it of the Year meant that we could still move forward and still achieve our objectives.

UndertheguidanceofSisterDeborahJamaliRSHM,whois facilitating the development of this partnership, students from the Student Goals and Implementation Committee (SGIC) met online with girls in their equivalent group JPIC (Justice, Peace andIntegrityofCreation)inZambia.

Thegirlsspoketoeachotherabouttheirdi(erentcountries andtheirsharedexperiences.ThegirlsfromZambiaexplained to our students that they have been working to raise money for their community, particularly a nearby orphanage, St. Michael’s. JPIC are also raising awareness of women’s rights, thetra(ckingofwomenandchildren,identifyingissuesrelated to poverty in their communities and creating ways to care fortheenvironment.TheSt.Joseph¢sgirlsaskedincredibly poignantquestionsaboutthelifeofwomenintheUKand explained some of the challenges that girls and women face in their community and culture.

Fromthisconnectionarosethepilotforpeer-tutoring sessions between Marymount and St. Joseph’s in Science, MathematicsandEnglish,aswellasaBookClub.These sessions, run twice a week, brought together the students for some fun lessons based on shared curricula. Peer tutors adapting quicklytothedi(erentagesintheclassesaswellassomealltoo-familiartechnicalissuessurroundingonlinelearning!Both student groups are excited to work together again next year on this project, as well as continued fundraising for St. Michael’s.
