ay is such a beautiful and busy time at Marymount. It’s a beautiful time not only because the campus is in full bloom with all of the colors of spring, but also because it is during this month that we celebrate a number of special occasions for our students, including the Sacraments of First Communion and Confirmation.

Students began preparing for these important events last fall under the guidance of their classroom teachers, religion teachers Ann Haring and Marie-Catherine Letendre, and the wonderful Sr. Rosaleen Sheridan. We share in their joy at reaching these singular moments in their spiritual lives

and celebrate with them during what is appropriately the month of Mary, for whom our school is named.

It is also during May that we start to wrap up the current academic year while beginning Continued on Page 2

Elementary School students get creative to fight hunger

Empty Bowls: A Symbol of Hunger

A

ll students in the Elementary School have been busy shaping and glazing bowls for our Empty Bowls project. Have a look at the bowls in the display case in the Elementary School lobby.

At International Food Day, which will take place at Marymount on May 25, guests are invited to a simple meal of rice. In exchange for a €10 donation, guests are asked to keep a bowl as a symbol of all the empty bowls in the world.

We will donate the money raised through this initiative to the Jesuit Refugee Center here in Rome and to our friends in Zambia.

As a community, we use this time to reflect on the year and utilize that information to plan for the future. While celebrating

our accomplishments of the present, we plan for the changes that allow us to continue to grow in the future.

During most of the month of May, our seniors are taking their IB exams to successfully demonstrate the intellectual development they experienced during their years at Marymount. At the same time they are receiving and accepting offers to university and wistfully anticipating their futures.

It is a bittersweet time for all of us as they say goodbye to teachers and friends, attend celebrations and get ready to step into the unknown. We look forward to our Graduation Ceremony on June 1 as a means for our whole

Marymount Community to come together to acknowledge and celebrate this particular group of students’ accomplishments.

As they depart from our front gates as Marymount students for the last time, they will leave an imprint on our school that represents their unique contributions and spirit; a spirit that will remain in our hearts well into the future.

We wish every senior success in their life journey and I share with them a quote from Luke 1:37 – “Faith does not make things easier, it makes them possible!” May all their dreams come true.

EC2 students head outdoors to learn about plants and animals

Exploring Life on a Local Farm D

uring our visit to the Salvucci Farm on April 15, we saw many wonderful animals.The children felt a pony nuzzling oats from their hands. They threw corn to hens and to a pig, and they had fun taking leaves off a laurel bush and offering them to the goats.

Gloria, our guide, pulled four eggs from a basket and explained that they came from a hen, duck, goose, and ostrich. The ostrich egg, she explained, weighs the same as 24 hen’s eggs!

Later, Gloria quietly gathered us together and handed us spikes of lavender flowers before we set off to see the farm’s cows, but the lavender turned out to be unnecessary.

We sat by some cows that

were due to give birth within two days and saw others with their udders full of milk.

Outside, in a special quarantined area, three-dayold calves were resting.

The highlight of our visit was making bread. Gloria explained to us how wheat is harvested and turned into flour. Each child mixed yeast with flour and salt and kneaded it thoroughly to make their own loaves of bread.

Students Go Wild for Flowers Wild flowers are beautiful. There can never be too many, so the Early Childhood 2 classes went to the large grassy area high up over the soccer pitch and sowed wildflower sees with wild abandon. The children tossed handfuls of seeds over the ground and then stamped them carefully into the soil because our plan was to grow flowers, not feed the birds. We are hoping to see some flowers swaying in the breeze before school ends next month.

Last month’s Global Calendar event focused on the environment

Celebrating Mother Earth Day he world celebrated International Mother Earth Day last month. The emphasis here at Marymount was on recycling and planting.

Students learned to take a more active role in recycling by properly using the many new recycling bins placed around campus.

All of us know how fortunate we are to have such a lovely, green campus. To make it even more beautiful while building awareness of the way plants contribute to a healthy planet, students throughout the Early Childhood and Elementary School, often working together, planted seeds of many types in pots they made from juice cartons and other recycled items. After these seeds sprout and the plants and flowers they produce grow a bit, the children will plant them around the school, adding to the beauty of Marymount and doing their part to help Mother Earth.

n this day we remember how to protect the Earth so we had a whole school meeting to learn to recycle. We planted seeds to grow various types of vegetables and fruits. Then we had a great picnic on the lawn before the end of the day. Earth is at tangible risk, and it needs protection. What a fantastic Day. – Lorenzo, 5T

International Club Update I

n the International Club we speak about projects we do at school about internationalism, like Mother Language Day or International Food Day. Each of us has a job. Some people write things about our club in the newsletter, others remind us when to come to the club, and others keep the time. I am the translator. We meet on Thursdays at least two times a month in the Art room. It is nice

because we speak about internationalism in the school.

Grade 3 students learn about electric circuits

Let There Be

LIGHT! ast month, Third Grade students assembled a simple, closed electric circuit for a science experiment. The materials included a board with wires, light bulb, battery, and metal clips to make a switch.

The students attached the wires to the battery, light bulb, and switch, and if they assembled the circuit correctly, the light bulb lit up. Once everyone’s circuits were working, we turned off all the lights, and the classroom looked as though stars were sparkling all over!

L

hat’s an electrical circuit?

There are many types of electrical circuits. One of them is a simple electrical circuit. How is it made? It’s made of a battery, wire and light bulb. On every electrical circuit there is a negative and positive pole. This is a fact. How does the light bulb light up? It lights up with a battery that needs a wire but of course the wire has to be connected in the right place. My favorite part of the lesson was when we made our own electrical circuit. After, we did something even better. We turned off the lights and turned on our electrical circuits and sang “Jingle Bells”!

The current moves from the battery terminal through the wire to light the bulb. We put all the components together in the right places because Mrs. Zappia and Sr. Michaeline helped us. We used a switch to turn the light on and off. The experiment worked perfectly, and we were all quite delighted!

Grade 6

Literary Students dig into the literary elements of ‘Holes’ for their English classes

Giulia, Ludovica, and Antonio with their project explaining the concept of setting in the book Holes by Louis Sachar.

Showcase G

rade 6 English classes culminated their studies of the novel Holes by Louis Sachar presenting a Literary Showcase to teachers and peers on March 22. This spotlight on literature encouraged independent investigation and creative expression of various aspects of literature while facilitating creative thinking, critical reasoning, and effective communication.

The students worked in groups of three to analyze a literary element (or two!) within the novel while connecting it to books they read independently.

Topics included theme, setting, conflict, foreshadowing, flashback, connections, characterization, and irony.

Students created panels and incorporated a technology component, allowing them to truly showcase what they learned.

The Sixth Graders were extremely proud of their accomplishments and were particularly excited when all the teachers from the English department came and asked them questions about the various aspects of literature they were studying.

It was a fun experience; I would like to do it again. This showcase helped me improve on working in a team, being organized in managing time, and doing my part for our presentation.

e Seven Gifts

hortly before Easter, I was in the Villa art room admiring the impressively crafted Balsa di Rame panels that Sixth Grades produced as a response to their investigations into the art of the Etruscans Eighth Graders were grappling with the complexities of Romanticism (they’re just at that age). Seventh Graders had finished creating some dazzling stained glass roundels inspired by medieval cathedral windows, and I’d got my lesson plan for their next project on the Renaissance and systematized linear perspective all prepared.

S

Then, as if by magic, Sister Rosaleen appeared in the art room with a request. Could I possibly work with the Seventh Grade on something related to their Confirmation preparations

and base it around the theme of The Seven Gifts of The Holy Spirit? Mindful of the school’s goal for this year: To deepen our personal relationship with God, I silently cried out to Him in my mind, “OMG, how?”

Sister continued that she had initially considered asking us to do The Beatitudes but thought they might be a little “too abstract.” Another silent prayer, this time thanking Him for sparing us that challenge.

“Of course we can,” I heard myself say, casting my mind back many decades to my own confirmation to recollect what The Seven Gifts are. Sister thanked me effusively, beamed a beatific smile and vanished, leaving me stuffing my Renaissance/Perspective lesson plan back in the drawer

for use later and anxiously praying for inspiration.

How would we do it? How do I fit it in to the curriculum to cover the renaissance and make it engaging, relevant and useful not just to the Confirmandi but also for other students of differing faiths?

“Of course, Your Holiness, I’ll do my best,” I said, hoping Henryk and Massimo could lend me a ladder long enough to reach it.

Waking with a start and seeing the smiling faces of the Grade 7 students, who were hammering on the door and clamoring to get on with the project, I was relieved to find myself back in the art room. I introduced the project explaining that we’d received a commission from an important religious figure and revealed our Sistine Chapel ceiling: A large notice board from the

“Can anyone tell me what The Seven Gifts of The Holy Spirit are?” Hands shot up enthusiastically around the room, testament to lessons well learned in Confirmation class.

Courage; Knowledge; Reverence; Right Judgment; Understanding; Wisdom; Wonder & Awe were all written up on the white board.

“How can we illustrate them?”

Lively discussion followed with each of the three Grade 7 groups about historical patronage in the renaissance, the purpose of art and its power to communicate

messages, the problems of representation, the use of symbolism to express abstract concepts, the way images become codified into a shared language, how to refine or combine graphics to express ideas more precisely and the appropriation and recontextualizing of existing artworks to serve our purpose.

orking collectively and sharing ideas we set about making the individual pieces and resolving the compositional challenges of bringing so many disparate elements into a balanced and harmonious whole. The students found the experience of collaborative effort to produce a single piece particularly satisfying. Finally it

his year’s class preparing for Confirmation numbers 33 candidates. Sister Rosaleen Sheridan instructs 30 Seventh Graders in a regularly scheduled course in Religious Studies 7, and she individually prepares the other three students who are in High School.

The Sacrament of Confirmation belongs with the sacraments of initiation, Baptism and Eucharist. Confirmation candidates have learned that the reception of Confirmation is necessary for the completion of baptismal grace since the baptized are more perfectly bound to the Church and are enriched with a special strength of the Holy Spirit. Students have freely chosen to be confirmed and become true witnesses of Christ willing to spread the faith by word and deed. The seven gifts of the Holy Spirit, wisdom, understanding, right judgment, courage, knowledge, reverence, and awe, confer on the candidates the grace to realize their witness.

The week of May 6 will bring all preparation and learning to a crescendo of important events. On Monday, candidates will reflect on the spiritual aspects of Confirmation as well as the real

commitment that they are making during a daylong retreat held at Marymount Nomentana. On Thursday, they will practice at Santa Susanna Church in the morning and present in the afternoon the annual Saints’ Museum under the pine trees lining the walk to the Villa. Candidates will dress in a costume representing the saint whose name they have chosen and tell a story of the saint’s life.

On Friday, the confirmation sponsors will meet with Sister Rosaleen in the evening to understand their role during the ceremony.

On May 11, Cardinal William J. Levada will confirm the Marymount candidates at the 5:30pm liturgy celebrating the Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord. Father Greg Apparcel, pastor of Santa Susanna, has been invaluable in helping with organizing the liturgical celebration. The culminating moment during the liturgy with the words: “Be sealed with the Gift of the Holy Spirit” and the anointing with chrism provides the full outpouring of the Holy Spirit as once granted the apostles on the day of Pentecost.

Marymount presents an original musical for its spring theater production

B

efore the curtain went up on the Secondary School’s spring production, “An Honest Living,” drama teacher and director Gina Ferrarin explained to the audience that Grade 10 student Ramzi S. approached her last fall and announced, “Miss, I’ve written a musical.”

After reading through the script, Ms. Ferrarin was determined to bring Ramzi’s creation to the stage.

Many months of work followed, including music teacher Rocco Sbardella’s transcriptions and orchestrations of melodies sung into an iPhone, musical contributions from Grade 10 student Alessandra Y., hours and hours of rehearsal with the cast and musicians, and choreography devised Ms. Ferrarin, Alessandra, and her classmate Lori N.

The curtain rose at last on April 10 with a janitor, played by Ramzi himself, pushing a broom across the stage and explaining in rather jaded fashion that while an honest living is a working-man’s pay, in certain circles, including the cutthroat world of show business in which the story unfolds, there is no such thing as an honest living.

From there we are taken to the Actor’s Studio in 1940’s New York where naive newcomer Peter Wentworth, played by Noah M., is eager to break into the business but manages on arrival to land only the menial job of errand boy to a demanding film producer named Alice, played by Azzura M., and her short-tempered deputy, Leonard, in a role shared by Stavros A. and James M.

Peter’s youthful enthusiasm quickly gives way to disgust after witnessing the various backstage dramas and machinations that inevitably precipitate the rise and fall of celebrity.

Among the characters Peter encounters are Robbie, the egotistical leading man, played on successive nights by Tommaso S.R. and Rolando M.; the beautiful but choreographically challenged ingénue, Shirley, played by Sharon C., and the talented but overlooked showgirl, Lucy, played by Line T.. A 12member chorus supports the main characters as they try and fail to produce a blockbuster film, realize the path to success is riddled with obstacles, and resign themselves to seeing their dreams go unfulfilled.

While the premise of the show casts and harsh and cynical spotlight on the darker side of show business, the musical ends on a hopeful note with former rivals Shirley and Lucy teaming up in a new, toetapping act that serves as the musical’s finale.

A Look at the 2013

IB Art Vernissage C

an art express a national identity? What if the artist identifies with more than one nationality? Is art more meaningful if it is literal or conceptual? The art on display at Marymount’s annual IB Art Vernissage elicited these questions and others with the eclectic array of paintings, sculptures, drawings, and photographs shown in the Auditorium on April 17.

Nine graduating seniors presented two years’ worth of work in the exhibition as a culminating project for the IB Visual Arts curriculum. A number of the works bore explicit cultural references – whether through imagery, materials, or words – to the students’ nationalities, which included Chinese, Japanese, Sri Lankan, British, and Italian. Painting appeared to be the medium of choice this year, although the students experimented with ceramics and photography and utilized a variety of materials to create inventive works of sculpture as well.

Each student spoke enthusiastically about the concepts behind their works to the many students, faculty, staff, family, and friends attending the exhibition. They clearly put substantial thought and effort into creating not only each piece of art but also into building a cohesive collection of works of which they could be proud.

Marymount’s Secondary School Music Department presented its annual Spring Concert on April 29 to a standing-room-only crowd in the Auditorium.

The evening featured more than 120 musicians performing works from classics to blues to pop, with several arrangements by music teachers Rocco Sbardella and Luca Chiaramonte. The program included many exceptional performances by the bands and choirs from each grade as well as the whole-school string ensemble and a guest appearance by the band Pure Mindless Vandalism, made up of students Gabriel B., Cole C., Gi Min L., and Noah M. The singers and musicians performed enthusiastically and clearly enjoyed their time in the spotlight while the audience responded with a hearty ovation. Bravi!

Our Newest NHS Members ongratulations to the 16 students from Grades 10, 11 and 12 who were elected as the newest members of the Romarian chapter of the National Honor Society. Members of the NHS are selected by their teachers based on their high levels of scholarship, service, leadership, and character.

An induction ceremony took place on April 22 in the Auditorium during which current members introduced and spoke about the achievements of the incoming members, and Secondary School Art teacher Jasmine Zarineh addressed the members with an inspiring speech and video presentation.

Faculty & Staff News

Congratulations to Secondary School Art teacher Michael Clark whose work is featured this month in The London Group Centenary Exhibition.

Founded in 1913, The London Group is the UK’s longest running artists’ collective. The organization has been an integral force in supporting diverse and emerging artistic talent across Britain, particularly through their biennial open. The group selected 76 artists to show work with 61 London Group

members at two exhibitions to be held at The Cello Factory in London in May and June where the winners of more than £5,000 worth of prizes and a solo show are decided. Mr. Clark has been showing with The London Group for the last three years.

Secondary School Physics Teacher, Dr. Alan Bates, has published another article in The Physics Teacher magazine, a publication of the American Association of Physics

Teachers. Titled The InverseSquare Law with Data Loggers, the article describes how Dr. Bates and his students verified the inversesquare law for the intensity of light received at a distance from a light source. The article was peer reviewed by the editor, two referees, and the layout staff at the magazine and appears in the May 2013 issue. Well done!

Marymount students prove to be excellent diplomats as they pass 3 resolutions at the Haarlem Model United Nations

odel United Nations is a student-organized simulation of the UN. Begun in 1968, MUN has become very popular throughout the world as an excellent training ground for learning about world issues, vigorous and informed debate, and the difficult process of consensus-building for a realistic solution. Students in the most competitive schools attend several such experiences throughout the year. In this way they greatly enrich their education.

In March, Marymount students participated in the MUN held in Haarlem in the Netherlands.

There were more than 600 students from 30 schools

involved – quite an amazing gathering in the opening ceremony, which was held in the late-Gothic church of St. Bavo.

Because we were spread out among four different committees, all of us had to meet and interact with students from all over the world, making

both allies for our causes as well as new friends. The simulation itself was quite riveting and intense.

he goal of most of the committees was to pass a resolution. For the first time as long as anyone can remember, Marymount became the main submitters of three different resolutions, a very difficult feat. To pass one resolution is very hard; three is amazing. Even if you weren’t a main submitter, you had to defend your country’s position in the debate. We developed our speaking and debating skills in formal parliamentary debate. It was tough, but in the end we managed to pass all three resolutions quite successfully.

We think that everyone enjoyed the trip thoroughly.

The weather was bitterly cold, but we had a decent and comfortable hotel, and we bonded with everyone who

went because we were such a small group. MUN ended with a blast at a place called the Stalker Club.

So much happened within four days during an experience that we didn’t expect to be so fun. It was definitely worthwhile, and we eagerly recommend the trip.
