Thank you for joining us for an exciting season of Music for Everyone. We kick off with an epic work by Berlioz, whose innovative use of massive forces expanded the expressive and sonic possibilities of the orchestra in ways unimagined before his “Symphonie Fantastique.” Our guest artist, Tim Fain, brings his own brilliant violin concerto, “Edge of a Dream,” to complement a program rich with vision and impressions. This fall, you will be introduced to two wonderful composers who flourished briefly in France in the 19th and 20th centuries and deserve inclusion in the great “classical” music conversation. In October, Lily Boulanger’s “D’un Matin de Printemps” reveals a young composer coming into her own, ready to challenge the primacy of Debussy with a gorgeous, impressionistic evocation of nature. In November, Louise Farrenc proves that the symphonic form was alive and well in nineteenth-century France with her virtuosic and imaginative “Third Symphony.” Framing Farrenc’s impressive effort are two works that exceeded expectations in their time. Mendelssohn’s programmatic “Melusine Overture” stretches its form beyond storytelling, moving into vivid depictions of the psychic states of its characters. And Beethoven’s beloved “Seventh Symphony” takes the orchestral dance to its highest expression. We conclude the first half of our season with the best possible homecoming for the holidays: a joyous reunion with our dear friends and colleagues at Hagerstown Choral Arts, an introduction to the youthful voices of North Hagerstown High School Chorus, and a very special guest, Gregory Watkins, whose beautiful and soulful tenor voice has been heard on major stages, including Lincoln Center and the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Most importantly, the musicians and I thank you for your continued and enthusiastic support. Your presence at our concerts gives true meaning to what we do and keeps great music alive and thriving in our community.

HAGERSTOWN CHORAL ARTS Gregory Shook Music & Artistic Director Hagerstown Choral Arts, Inc. (HCA) is a distinguished, auditioned, and communitybased volunteer chorus with a rich history and commitment to elevating the cultural landscape of Hagerstown, Washington County, and the Tri-State area. Founded in 1993 by local musicians Gregory P. Shook and Ned Wetherald, HCA emerged to fill a void in the community’s cultural arts scene, offering a platform for the performance of both sacred and secular music spanning

various periods, styles, and cultures. After its inception, Gregory Shook assumed the role of Artistic Director in 1994, steering the chorus towards continued growth and musical excellence. Under Mr. Shook’s careful direction, Hagerstown Choral Arts has thrived, boasting an average of 60 members each season and showcasing a diverse range of musical offerings. The chorus collaborates with local organizations, performing arts groups, and musicians, aiming to enhance awareness and appreciation of music in the community. HCA’s performances, held in local churches and community venues, often feature collaborations with local musicians, soloists, and music students. Noteworthy achievements include invitations to perform with the Maryland Symphony Orchestra and the Hagerstown Municipal Band, allowing HCA to reach a broad audience with a repertoire spanning classical works, compositions by American artists, and patriotic music. HCA consistently maintains a commitment to musical excellence, performing at least two major concerts annually, showcasing a repertoire that encompasses both classical masterpieces like Haydn’s Creation and Mozart’s Requiem, as well as lighter pieces from great American artists such as Cohen and Porter, and patriotic classics like the National Anthem and America the Beautiful. With Gregory Paul Shook at the helm as Music and Artistic Director, Hagerstown Choral Arts stands as a vibrant

testament to the enduring power and beauty of choral music in the community.

NORTH HAGERSTOWN HIGH SCHOOL CHORUS Nicole Swartwood Music Director Meet the North Hagerstown High School Chorus, a musical powerhouse thriving under the skilled direction of Nicole Swartwood. Under Nicole Swartwood’s guidance, the chorus achieved a notable milestone as the featured Children’s Choir for the Maryland Symphony Orchestra’s production of Carmen. This accomplishment underscores the ensemble’s exceptional talent and commitment to musical excellence. Currently, the North Hagerstown High School Chorus, along with Ms. Swartwood, eagerly anticipates their participation in the MSO’s Home for the Holidays Concert, further solidifying their reputation as a dynamic and accomplished musical entity in the Hagerstown community.
