The Washington Spirit has proudly become the presenting sponsor of MSYSA's newest initiative; Community Pick-Up Soccer! The Spirit's sponsorship will help to ensure hundreds of additional children have an opportunity to play the beautiful game, at no cost, within Maryland and DC!
This partnership perfectly aligns with both organization's missions, and with no formal curriculum, the focus of Community Pick-Up Soccer is purely on the joy of the game.
This program represents an excellent opportunity for community members to connect, form relationships, and let the game itself be the best teacher!
If you or someone you know is interested in starting a Community Pick-Up Soccer program, then please contact Nathean at nathean@msysa.org today!

Referees at the Maryland Cups
As the most important youth matches in the state each year, the Maryland State Referee Committee is proud to support the State and Presidents Cup as high-priority matches for development and growth of our referees. Throughout the tournaments, certified referee mentors are assigned to matches to offer the match officials feedback in order to help them grow This is a great way for all referees, especially newer officials, to improve their skills and gain different perspectives offered by someone who is not “in the heat of battle” on the field. Topics ranged from match control and game management to the proper administration of penalties kicks at the end of a match to break a tie. At the conclusion of the clinic, final assignments were announced and the 75 match officials received medals as a recognition of their quality of work throughout the season.
Maryland Referees Representing on Regional and National Stages
Each year, Maryland sends a group of referees to both Presidents Cup and National Championship Series Eastern Regionals. This year, both events took place in Charlestown and Barboursville, West Virginia. Referees are selected based on their commitment to working the Maryland Cups throughout the season. This year, 20 referees and mentors traveled to Presidents Cup Regionals and 27 attended NCS Regionals. Maryland referees represented well at these events, with seven receiving final assignments at Presidents Cup and six at NCS. Additionally, an impressive nine referees were selected, based on performance, to attend the USYS National Championships in Orlando, Florida, later this month!
