MFRI Delivers Training at a Remote U.S. Space Base in Alaska A first for MFRI, four instructors traveled to Alaska to deliver training at a space station. A remote installation, Clear Space Force Station is tasked with detecting incoming intercontinental and submarine-launched ballistic missiles while also tracking more than 30,000 space objects daily. Situated on an 11,000-acre site, and operating under 19 hours of continuous sunlight, MFRI instructors conducted Confined Space Rescue training for Clear Space first responders and for the neighboring Tri-Valley Volunteer Fire Department.
MFRI instructors then moved on to Fort Greely in Fairbanks to lead courses in vehicle extrication and trench rescue. Fort Greely plays a critical role in national defense as well, intercepting missile threats during their midcourse phase. It also operates as an Arctic Region Test Center, where military equipment is tested to ensure functionality in extreme cold. With average winter temperatures dipping to -20°F, Fort Greely’s subarctic environment offers a unique and challenging setting for both firefighting and military operations.

Commercial Building Fire in On August 28, 2025, at 0147 hrs, East Brandywine and surrounding stations were dispatched for a reported commercial building fire in the 500 block of Wellington Square. Early reports suggested a possible transformer fire, but additional 911 callers quickly confirmed that the building itself was on fire and that an explosion had been heard. Police units arrived first and confirmed significant fire visible along the side of the building. Upon arrival, Ladder 49 was directed to position in the front of the building behind Tower 47 and place the aerial to the roof. The crew was assigned as the Rapid Intervention Team (RIT), standing by to respond in case of firefighter injuries or mayday emergencies. Crew arrived and stretched a 1¾” handline, working to knock down a gas-fed fire along the side of the building. While the visible flames were quickly extinguished, crews were unable to secure the active gas leak, and PECO was requested. 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb at M&T Bank Stadium Story and Photos Courtesy Howard Meile, III The 13th annual 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb took place on September 6th at the M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore. Around 450 people took part in the memorial event, including area first responders and civilians. The climb kicked off at 9:30 and each participant climbed 2,200 steps, equivalent to 110 flights, synonymous with the height of the World Trade Center. Each person carried a tag with the name and photograph of one of the 343 FDNY firefighters killed in the line of duty on that fateful day on September 11th, 24 years ago. Everyone was encouraged to research the firefighter on their tag to gain a little insight into his life and sacrifices made. After completing the climb, each person came out of the stadium and rang a bell on Engine Co. 23, announcing the fallen firefighter that they had climbed for. The event is in cooperation with the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation which helps fund programs to support the families of local fallen firefighters and the FDNY Counseling Services Unit. Baltimore City Fire Department Deputy Chief Mya McConnell said the event is very important to them. “We want to make sure we memorialize that event, and that they never forget.” The stair climb is a way to honor and remember the FDNY firefighters who selfishly gave their lives so that others might live on. Every firefighter and community participant ensures that each of the 343 firefighters are honored and that the world knows that we will never forget. This year was one of the most productive ever. Thirty teams entered and with over 450 participants registered 395 donations totaled almost $45,000. The top individual donor was Andrew Mollison. The Owings Mills Volunteer Fire Company was the top team raising over $7,000, and the top fundraiser was Brad Bondroff with over $6,700 raised. A reception followed at the Firefighters Local 734 Union Hall across from the stadium. There were music, drawings, and giveaways and Mission BBQ was on hand to provide free meals to all of this year’s participants.

5 Alarm Building Fires in Downtown Story and Photos Courtesy Howard Meile, III
On September 2, 2025, around 1500 hrs, a fire was reported in a building located at Fayette Street near Howard Street in the heart of downtown Baltimore. Fire Box 23-10 was dispatched and Battalion Chief 6 arrived on location and took Command and reported a 4-story vacant boarded up building with heavy smoke showing and fire through the roof and out of the rear. Being a Code X-Ray structure, units were advised to set up exterior operations from the start. Ladder pipes as well as heavy water hook up were ordered. Within minutes the fire had extended into the rear of a large 4-story two-unit building that fronts on the adjacent N. Howard Street. Command asked for the working fire assignment followed by the second alarm. The light rail line runs through Howard Street and as companies arrived they had to work around the catenary electric wires alongside the 125 year-old buildings on fire. Command immediately requested that the rails be shut down and electric system be deenergized. As the fire gained headway in the upper floors and roof of 109-111 a third alarm was struck out. As the units set up and started getting water to the fire heavy fire and smoke was now showing from the top of these two buildings. By now the original building on Fayette St had collapsed to the ground. While companies were beginning to battle the blaze in these buildings they looked up the street and saw smoke coming from another 5-story building at 117-121 N. Howard Street. Firefighters scurried to move hoses and mount an attack on these vacant structures. Two more alarms were struck out in the next twenty minutes. As more companies arrived they were securing more hydrants to supplement the water supply as the other companies were fighting to keep the two fires from spreading any further. After the fifth alarm a special call was made for Pikesville Volunteer Tower 323. They were set up on the north side of the block to keep the fire from spreading any further. All of the buildings involved were vacant and were 100-125 years old. All units on the scene continued to pour water into these buildings until it was contained around 2000 hours. Traffic was severely hampered in the area as these two streets are major arteries through the City. Shuttle buses were put in service to move people around the stopped light rail line. It wasn’t put back in service until later the next day. Some units remained on the scene throughout the night and into the next day chasing hot spots in the vacant buildings. The cause is under investigation by the Fire Investigation Bureau, Baltimore Police Department Arson Unit, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Units from, Anne Arundel, Baltimore, and Howard Counties transferred into the City to fill the houses of units on the scene. Anne Arundel Tuck 31was dispatched to the fire on the second alarm. There were no injuries reported during the incident.
