South County EMS Service Making a Difference Since launching on December 1, 2025, at Boonsboro Fire Station #8, Washington County’s new South County ambulance has already made a strong impact on emergency response in our community. In its first six weeks, the ambulance responded to nearly 70 emergency calls, including 50 calls in December, with many resulting in patient transports. This added unit has helped reduce demand on other county ambulances and improve overall coverage. Most importantly, the new service is significantly reducing response times – often by 10-14 minutes per call—with some high-priority patients reached in as little as six minutes. Faster response times mean better care and better outcomes. The feedback from residents and community leaders has been overwhelmingly positive, reinforcing the importance of this long-needed service in South County.

Three Hagerstown EMS Clinicians Recipients of Washington County Life Savers Awards On September 6, 2025, Community Rescue Service Paramedic Rachel Buck (752), EMT Sarah Nichols (752), and Captain Dennis Browne (D75) utilized a new Maryland protocol, Dual Sequential Defibrillation, which contributed to the successful resuscitation of the patient. The Washington County Division of Emergency Services, in collaboration with the Quality Assurance Office and Meritus Medical Center, recognized this and several other emergency incidents in which coordinated efforts between dispatchers, bystanders, EMS clinicians, firefighters, and hospital staff led to patients surviving life-threatening medical emergencies and being discharged from the hospital neurologically intact during presentation of the Life Savers Awards on March 6 in Hagerstown. Harford Co. VF and EMS Association Honors Donna Laird with Linda Dousa Lifetime Achievement Award

The Harford County Volunteer Fire and EMS Association (HCVFEMSA) has honored Donna Laird of the Abingdon Fire Company with the Linda Dousa Lifetime Achievement Award.

HCVFEMSA EMS Committee Chair Dr. Paul Chizmar and Co-Chair Greg Dietrich presented the award during the association’s Annual Banquet and Installation of Officers on February 21, 2026.

The Linda Dousa Lifetime Achievement Award recognizes a volunteer EMS clinician who has demonstrated a lifetime of leadership in volunteer service to their community, both within the EMS field and beyond. Eligible clinicians must have at least 10 years of active volunteer EMS service in Harford County, a minimum of five years in EMS leadership, and have a demonstrated record of mentorship and instruction, as well as a record of service to their community outside of EMS. The award is not presented annually, but rather given only when someone has risen to the level of clinical excellence, integrity, mentorship, and service as exhibited by its namesake.

The EMS Committee unanimously nominated Laird for the award. Since joining the Abingdon Fire Company in 1995, she has served as a clinician, officer, president, vice president and, most recently, Chair of the Board of Directors. In the course of her career, Laird has responded to over 6,000 EMS calls for service – 3,400 at Abingdon alone – while simultaneously mentoring new members, serving as and instructor and preceptor, and providing leadership at the company, county, and state levels. Laird has served as a delegate with the Maryland State Firefighters Association, worked with the Harford County EMS Foundation, and continues to volunteer post-retirement. Additionally, she actively serves in the ladies auxiliary of the American Legion, as well as at her community church.

Captain Jeffrey Gunter Retires Congratulations on Your Retirement, Captain Jeffrey Gunter!

On May 1, 2026, we honored Captain Gunter as he retired after more than 27 years of dedicated service with the Annapolis Fire Department.

Captain Gunter rose through the ranks from Firefighter to Firefighter First Class, Lieutenant, and Captain. He also served as a National Registered Paramedic. Throughout his career, he received many thankyou letters, unit citations, and commendatory letters.

We wish him a happy retirement and thank him for his service and commitment to excellence for the residents and visitors of the City of Annapolis!

Welcome, K9 Raven, to the Annapolis FD We’re excited to introduce you to our newest member of the Annapolis Fire Department, K9 Raven! She is trained in explosive detection and is part of our Fire and Explosive Services Unit.

Raven is a 1-year-5-month-old Black Labrador. Southern Coast K9 trained her in New Smyrna Beach, Florida.

Thank you to the Chesapeake K-9 Fund for their generous support that helps us purchase these specialty canines, as well as essential equipment and services. The Chesapeake K-9 Fund is a nonprofit organization based in Annapolis, Maryland, dedicated to supporting and assisting K-9 units in the local community.

On April 10, 2026, we held our Annapolis Fire Academy Recruit Training Program graduation CP 01–2026.

We want to congratulate all the cadets for completing the program. During these eight months, they completed Firefighter I and II, EMT-B, Hazardous Materials Awareness, Aircraft Rescue & Firefighting, Engine Operations, Vehicle Rescue, Truck Operations, and much more!

Commercial Structure Fire on Margaret Avenue On March 27, 2026, at approximately 4:06 p.m., firefighters were dispatched to 1812 Margaret Avenue for a reported commercial building fire.

Upon arrival, crews encountered a single-story commercial building with smoke coming from the front. Due to the size of the building and the volume of fire, a second alarm was requested to bring additional resources.

Firefighters made entry and began an aggressive interior attack, bringing the fire under control in approximately 50 minutes. No injuries to civilians or firefighters were reported.

An investigation by the Fire and Explosive Services Unit determined that the fire was accidental and originated from a laser cutter. The estimated cost of damage to the building is currently undetermined.

Structure Fire on Pleasant Street On April 23, 2026, units responded to the block of Pleasant Street for a reported structure fire.

Crews arrived on location to find a 2-story end-of-group townhouse with smoke coming from the 2nd-floor window. The crews quickly extinguished the fire and placed it under control. No injuries to firefighters or civilians. A total of 2 dogs were rescued and are doing well and reunited with their owner.

The Red Cross was notified to assist occupants. The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Fire and Explosive Services Unit.

Annapolis FD Launches Prehospital Whole Blood Program On May 7, 2026, the Annapolis Fire Department proudly announces the official launch of its prehospital Low-Titer O Positive Whole Blood (LTO+WB) Program.

When someone has serious life-threatening injuries due to trauma or medical emergencies (e.g., gastrointestinal hemorrhage, uncontrolled post-partum bleed), getting blood quickly can mean the difference between life and death.

As the 9th ground-based agency in Maryland, we have partnered with Inova Blood Donor Services to receive Low-Titer O Positive (LTO+) blood. Whole blood, which is rich in red blood cells that carry oxygen, is what the body rapidly loses during severe trauma.

Prehospital whole blood has been clinically proven to drastically improve the outcomes of patients experiencing hemorrhagic shock. Our EMS36 Supervisors will have specialized equipment required to keep the blood safe and ready for administration. EMS36 Supervisors will now be able to provide this life-saving intervention on the scene, thus increasing patients’ chances of survival.

Church Fire in Oella Outside of Catonsville

Story and Photos Courtesy Howard Meile, III Around noon on April 27, 2026, Baltimore County Fire Dispatch was receiving 9-1-1 calls reporting smoke coming from an historic church in the community of Oella, just outside of Catonsville. Fire Box 4-16 was dispatched at 1145 hours for a fire at the Mount Gilboa AME Church located at 2312 Westchester Avenue, just short of the Baltimore-Howard County line.

Engine 3 from Woodlawn and Engine and Truck 5 from Halethorpe were first on the scene and reported smoke coming from the windows and front door of the 150 year old stone church. Crews made entry and found heavy smoke inside with a fire within the interior walls. Battalion Chief 2 arrived and took Command requesting a working fire at 1158 hours. Once inside firefighters opened up walls and the ceiling below the second floor. The second floor and roof was checked for any extension. The fire was extinguished within 30 minutes. There was no one inside the building at the time of the fire. The fire was discovered by a store owner down the street, who called 911 and then alerted church members, some of whom reported to the scene..

The church is listed on the National Register of Historic places. Mount Gilboa is the oldest continuously active African American congregation in Baltimore County and was founded in 1799 by free Black people. The Mt. Gilboa chapel was built in 1859 as a replacement for the congregation’s original log chapel. The chapel’s first floor served as a one-room school for much of the 1800’s and early 1900’s.

The fire was cited as accidental, caused by an electrical malfunction in the ceiling. There was significant fire and water damage to the first floor and mostly smoke damage to the second floor. Pastor Garland Owens stated that “We are a resilient church” and we are thankful that we are still standing and the church will rebuild.

Rowhome Fire in Essex

On May 1, 2026, at 2020 hrs, BCoFD was dispatched to the 1200 block of S Marlyn Avenue for a fire in a rowhome.

Units arrived with smoke showing from the front and roof lines and fire showing from the basement door of this 2 story end of the group occupied rowhome. Crews worked on searches and stretched a couple of handlines. They extinguished the fire quickly.

No injuries were reported and the cause is under investigation.

CONTOMS Students Train For Tactical Medical Operations Training to protect victims during high-risk simulated tactical operations, 18 students in the Counter Narcotics and Terrorism Operational Medical Support (CONTOMS) EMT-T Advanced Course at MFRI navigated confined spaces, breached floors, forced entry, and used ropes to move manikins to safety.

The training also included emergency K-9 care for working dogs and sick-call care focused on treating illnesses and injuries that may affect team members during extended operations.

Developed to prepare medical providers to operate alongside law enforcement, CONTOMS equips responders with the skills needed to deliver life-saving care in fast-moving, high-threat environments.

MFRI Acquires New Props For Fire Dynamics Training MFRI is advancing live-fire training across the state with the addition of Flashpoint Fire Dynamics Training Props at each of our facilities.

These innovative props give firefighters a hands-on understanding of how to control fire flow paths through realistic, scenario-based training.

Firefighters can safely explore critical fire-behavior concepts, including basement fire flow paths, vertical ventilation, thermal ballast, the role of air in flaming combustion, and vent-point ignition.

Built as reusable scale models and fueled by clean-burning alcohol, these props also allow for safe indoor training when proper clearance is available.

Instructor Skills Weekends Prepare Future Instructors Forty first responders prepared to bring their skills to students during MFRI’s Spring Instructor Skills Weekends. Held over two weekends, the session are designed to overview all of the skills necessary to teach within each respective emergency discipline.

Participants who successfully complete the program are eligible to instruct for MFRI or their sponsoring agencies, helping strengthen the ranks of experienced instructors serving Maryland’s emergency response community.

Fatal House Fire in Bethesda On April 15, 2026, MCFRS was alerted to a house fire on Charred Oak Drive in Bethesda.

Units arrived to find a two‑story split‑level home with heavy fire throughout the structure. Crews initiated an aggressive interior attack.

One female victim was declared deceased and two other vistims, including a firefighter, were injured. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Scrap Metal Fire in Rockville On April 7, 2026, MCFRS responded to a reported scrap metal fire at Boxwell Metals, located in the 800 block of East Gude Drive.

Units arrived to find a significant fire that required a large response due to the volume and nature of the mate‑ rials involved.

Firefighters operated under challenging conditions and remained on scene until the incident was stabilized.

House Fire in Olney On April 8, 2026, MCFRS were dispatched for a re‑ ported house fire on Thornhurst Drive, in Olney.

Units arrived to find fire on the roof and in the at‑ tic. The home was equipped with solar panels, which are creating additional hazards and making fire operations more complex. Crews are taking critical steps to control electrical and other associated hazards before beginning full extinguishment of the fire. These safety measures are essential to protect both residents and responding crews.

Battalion 4 is in command of the incident.

2nd Alarm Apartment Building Fire in Gaithersburg

On April 10, 2026, MCFRS units were dispatched to Mahogany Drive in Gaithersburg, for a reported building fire.

Units arrived and encountered heavy fire on the 3rd and 4th floors of a four‑story apartment building. A 2nd alarm was requested to bring ad‑ ditional resources. Crews began an aggressive attack on the fire and were able to quickly extinguish the fire.

One adult male was transported to Shady Grove Adventist Hospital (Priority 3) and one adult female was treated on scene and refused trans‑ port. No firefighter injuries were reported. At least 8 apartment units were displaced, with the possibility of up to 16.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Structure Fire in N. Potomac On April 16, 2026, around 0200 hrs, MCFRS were dispatched to Dufeif Mill Road, in North Potomac, for a reported house fire.

Units arrived to find a large outbuilding used as a workshop. Fire was through the second story, with the roof already compromised on the rear. Crews quickly went to work and brought the fire under control.

No injuries were reported and the cause is under in‑ vestigation.

Building Fire in Federalsburg

On April 10, 2026 at 1721 hrs, Federalsburg and surrounding stations were dispatched for a reported shed fire in the 6300 block of Noble Road.

Chief 1 arrived to find several outbuildings on fire with extension to a camper. Chief S. Cox #115 assumed Command. Crews placed an attackline to the front and rear of the buildings simultaneously to begin fire suppres-

sion activities.

The Office of the Maryland State Fire Marshal was requested and conducted the investigation. The cause of the fire has not been released. There were no injuries reported.

House Fire in Chester

On April 12, 2026, at 1054 hrs, Grasonville and surrounding stations was alerted to a reported house fire in the 1300 block of Queen Anne Drive.

Units arrived to a well involved attached garage fire with extension to the house and attic. Crews deployed the front bumper line to knock down the garage before moving inside of the structure. Additional crews laddered the house and then went inside to open up. Fire Chief Anthony

was the initial Incident Commander before transferring Command to KIVFD Fire Chief Thomas.

There were no civilian or firefighter injuries reported. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Shed/Camper Fire in Preston On April 17, 2026, at 0850 hrs, Preston and surrounding stations were alerted for a reported barn fire.

Talbot Officer 403 (C. Beebe) arrived and discovered a single-story shed and a camper well involved in fire. Units arrived and deployed two handlines, making a quick knockdown of the fire.

MSFMO has the cause of the fire under investigation.

No injuries were reported.

House Fire in Greensboro

On April 25, 2026, at 1515 hrs, Greensboro along with surrounding stations were alerted for the house fire.

Units arrived to find a single-family home with fire, due to wind conditions the fire rapidly spread throughout the structure. Crews deployed attacklines to control the fire.

There were no civilian or firefighter injuries reported.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Dwelling Fire in Preston On April 22, 2026 at 1659 hrs, Preston and surrounding stations were alerted to a reported residential structure fire in the 4800 block of Birch Drive in Preston.

Chief 2 and Engine201 arrived to find a single story residential structure with smoke and fire showing. Crews stretched attacklines to begin an aggressive attack on the fire. Tanker106 responded and was assigned to Water Supply operations and supplied water to the fireground for extinguishment. Utility100 and Brush110 responded bringing extra personnel to the fireground. Once all visible fire was contained, crews assisted with overhauling and extinguishing all hidden pockets of fire.

No injuries were reported and the cause is under investigation.

Chief Leonard T. King Medal of Valor On April 19, 2026, Four members of the Salisbury FD were honored by the Maryland Fire Chiefs Association at their annual awards ceremony, held in Kent Island.

Lt. Andrew Merrill, MPO, Sergeant Mike Ozman, Firefighter/PM Corey Dean and Firefighter/EMT TJ Moore were awarded the Chief Leonard T. King Medal of Valor for the heroic rescue efforts at a mutual aid fire.

Shed Fire on Elizabeth St. On April 15, 2026, Salisbury and surrounding stations were dispatched to Elizabeth Street for a reported shed fire.

Units arrived to find a shed fully involved. Crews stretched attacklines and quickly extinguished the fire.

No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire is under investigation.

House Fire on Richmond Ave.

On April 3, 2026, around 0530 hrs, Salisbury along with mutual aid companies from Wicomico County were alerted for a house fire in the 700 block of Richmond Avenue.

Units arrived to find a single story residence with fire showing from the roof, a working fire dispatch was requested. Crews placed handlines in service, extinguishing the fire. Truck 2 perform primary searches along with VES. There was no civilian or firefighter injuries. The City and State Fire Marshals’ are investigating the fire. AC-1 had command of the incident.

Commercial Building Fire on Civic Ave. On April 3, 2026, just after 2200 hrs, the Salisbury along with Wicomico County mutual aid companies was alerted for a commercial building fire in 300 block of Civic Avenue.

Units arrived to find smoke showing from a middle of the group strip mall, calling for a working fire dispatch.

Crews stretched attacklines to extinguish the fire in the kitchen. Truck 2 performed a search and vertical ventilation.

There were no civilian or firefighter injuries reported.

The City Fire Marshal is investigating the fire. AC-1 had command of the incident.

Structure Fire on Mohawk Ave. On April 21, 2026, shortly after 0445 hrs, Salisbury along mutual aid companies from Wicomico County were alerted for a structure fire in the 800 block of Mohawk Avenue.

Units arrived to find multiple outbuildings well involved. Crews placed lines in service and extinguished the fire quickly. Truck 2 opened up the buildings to assist the engine companies.

The incident was quickly brought under control. There were no civilian or firefighter injuries reported. MSFMO has the cause of the fire under investigation. AC-1 held the command.

Fatal Apartment Building Fire in Manor Twp. On April 30, 2026, at 2049 hrs, Lancaster Township and surrounding stations were dispatched for a reported apartment building fire at the Spring Manor Apartments in the 700 block of Millersville Road in Manor Township.

Units arrived to find a two-story apartment building with heavy fire showing. Crews stretched attacklines as the fire spread rapidly. Crews began a search of the apartments but were quickly evacuated when the roof collapsed.

One victim was found deceased after the fire was extinguished. Pennsylvania State Police are investigating the cause of the fire.

Barn Fire in Colerain Twp. On March 31, 2026, at 17:12 hrs, Lancaster County-Wide Communications alerted the Quarryville for a barn fire at 626 Pumping Station Road in Colerain Township.

Units arrived to find a barn fully involved. Crews laid 1,200 feet of 4” supply line down the driveway from Pumping Station Road and started to protect exposures.

Tankers set up for nurse tanker operation with the clapper valves at the end of the driveway and Pumping Station Road to supply the scene. Quarryville Truck 57 set up and once a secure water supply was established, put the platform monitor in service and knocked down a majority of the fire.

Crews worked several hours along with a trackhoe from R. Work Excavating to overhaul and fully extinguish any remaining fire.

Dwelling Fire in Peach Bottom Township On April 8, 2026, Delta-Cardiff and surrounding stations were dispatched on a working dwelling fire in the unit block of Ruff Road in Peach Bottom Township.

Chief 57-1 arrived to find a 2-1/2 story single family dwelling with fire showing from the structure. Crews deployed multiple 1-3/4” handlines and set up the “blitz fire” to extinguish the fire.

All occupants of the home were accounted for and not present during the fire. Crews conducted extensive overhaul.

No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire is under investigation.

2 Alarm House Fire in Funkstown On April 12, 2026, at 1219 hrs, Funkstown and surrounding stations were dispatched for a reported garage fire in the 20000 block of Cool Hollow Road, in Funkstown.

Units arrived to find a three-story, single-family home with heavy fire through the roof. Crews stretched handlines and began to extinguish the fire.

The MSFMO said that the fire was discovered by a resident and was thought to have originated in the garage. The fire quickly spread and destroyed the home.

Three people were displaced and investigators said the fire caused about $1 million in damage.

The MSFMO has the cause of the fire under investigation.

House Fire in Frostburg

On April 12, 2026, just after 1700 hrs, Frostburg and surrounding stations were dispatched for a reported house fire in the 16700 block of Loartown Road, between Orourke Road and Old Loartown Road.

Units arrived to find a two-story, stone foundation with wood frame construction with the second floor well involved with fire. The fire spread and started a brush fire outside the residence and into an exposure building. An explosion from a ruptured fuel tank also occurred early in the operation. Shortly after the fire attack began, there was a partial collapse of the second floor into the first floor. Operations switched from an offensive attack to a defensive operation.

There were no injuries reported and the cause is under investigation.

Deck Fire in Cumberland

On April 20, 2026, just before 0700 hrs, Allegany County Joint Communications dispatched units for a reported house on fire in the Highland Estates subdivision.

Units arrived to find a one-story, single-family dwelling on a basement with fire showing from the rear. Crews quickly deployed an attackline and extinguished a fire on the deck with minimal extension to the home.

Chief 3 held the Highland Estates command.

House Fire in Waldorf On April 12, 2026, at 1500 hrs, La Plata and surrounding stations were alerted to a reported house fire in the 2000 block of Rosewood Drive in Waldorf.

Units arrived to fire through the roof of a two-story, single-family home. Due to the volume of fire, conditions quickly intensified, and all interior crews were ordered to evacuate as operations transitioned to heavy-duty master streams. Before withdrawal, crews completed a primary search of the structure, confirming no occupants remained inside.

The cause of the fire is under investigation and there were no injuries reported.

House Fire in Prince Frederick

On April 14, 2026, at 1257 hrs, Huntingtown and surrounding stations were alerted to the 1000 block of Clay Hammond Road for a reported structure fire.

Units arrived to fire in the attached garage and extending into the two-story, single-family home. Crews advanced an attackline to the first floor, then repositioned to perform line-over-ladder operations. Crews quickly extinguished the fire.

No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire is under investigation.

Barn Fire in Bethany On April 11, 2026, a Box Alarm was sounded alerting stations 8 (Bethany), 2 (Ellicott City), 3 (West Friendship), 9 (Long Reach), 7 (Banneker), 10 (Rivers Park), Battalion Chiefs 2 & 3, Safety-1, and EMS-2 for a reported large shed fire in the 9500 block of Longview Road.

Units arrived to find a barn on fire with several exposures. Crews initiated an aggressive offensive attack and quickly brought the fire under control. The scene was held to the first alarm for overhaul and final extinguishment.

The cause is currently under investigation by Howard County FI’s and the scene was commanded by BC Hummel.

Townhouse Fire in Hickory Ridge On April 9, 2026, a Box Alarm was sounded alerting stations 14 (Merriweather), 7 (Banneker), 9 (Long Reach), 10 (Rivers Park), 2 (Ellicott City), Battalion Chiefs 2 & 1, Safety-1, and EMS-2 for the reported Townhouse Fire in the 10600 block of Highbeam Court.

Units arrived to find working fire and requested the Working Fire Dispatch. Crews initiated an aggressive offensive fire attack and brought the fire under control in 20 minutes.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by Howard County FI’s and the fire was commanded by BCC Hummel.

Basement Fire in Dorsey Search On April 21, 2026, a Box Alarm was sounded alerting stations 2 (Ellicott City), 9 (Long Reach), 7 (Banneker), 5 (Fifth District-Clarksville), 14 (Merriweather), Battalion Chiefs 2 & 1, Safety-1, EMS-2 for a reported house fire in the 4600 block of Woodland Road.

Units arrived with smoke showing and upon further investigation, a working basement fire. Additional units responded on the WFD and crews initiated an aggressive offensive attack. The fire was brought under control quickly.

The fire is currently under investigation by Howard County FI’s and the scene was commanded by BC Plumer.

2 Alarm Vacant Building Fire in Sykesville

On April 25, 2026, shortly after 0730 hrs, Sykesville and surrounding stations were alerted for a building fire at the Springfield Hospital Center.

Units arrived and found fire through the roof of one of the vacant buildings. Due to the amount of fire, and condition of the building a decision was made to operate defensively. Tower 12 was set up and started flowing on the fire. As crews started fighting the fire it was noticed smoke coming from a second building. A small fire in the second building was located and quickly extinguished. Once extinguished crews checked the other building to confirm no other fire in any of the other buildings.

Another challenge crews had was multiple hydrants out of service. A second alarm and tankers were requested to help with the second building and water supply.

MSFMO confirmed the fires were acts of arson.

2 Alarm Multiple Dwellings in West Baltimore Story and Photos Courtesy Howard Meile, III On the evening of March 9, 2026, Rescue 1 was returning to quarters from the fireground of a working fire on Garrison Blvd around 2319 hours when they spotted flames coming from a vacant dwelling in the 1500 block of Clifton Avenue in the Penn North area of west Baltimore. They then asked for Fire Box 52-41 to be struck out. Upon further investigation they found heavy fire coming from several Code X-ray dwellings with extension to both sides and requested the working fire assignment. The crew proceeded to open up the vacant structures as fire was now through the rooves in five 2-story vacant dwellings.

As companies arrived they began exterior operations with ladder pipes in the front and rear of the block. When Battalion Chief 3 arrived he requested the second alarm and had units prepare for a “heavy water hook-up” Firefighters continued for the next hour pouring water into the structures. Tower 1 was positioned in the front side and blasted the initial fire building’s facade down to the ground, gaining access to the raging fire inside. The fire was placed under control at 0039 hours. Units remained on the scene dousing hot spots in several of the structures for the next few hours. No injuries were reported and Fire Investigation was on the scene to determine the cause of the fire.

Vacant Rowhome Fire in West Baltimore

On May 12, 2026, at 2130 hrs, BCFD was dispatched to the 1600 block of West Saratoga Street for a vacant rowhome fire.

Units arrived with fire showing from all three floors of this end of the unit vacant rowhome. Crews began a quick inside attack, but was pulled back quickly. Crews stretched handlines and a couple of ladder pipes to extinguish the fire.

No injuries were reported and the cause is under investigation.

Vacant House Fire in Brooklyn On April 27, 2026, at 1905 hrs, BCFD was alerted for a report of a vacant house fire in the 3700 block of 6th Street, this is down in the Brooklyn part of the city.

BCPD reported fire showing all around this 2 story code X older wooden house, BCFD companies arrived with heavy fire throughout and immediately started the ‘Fill it full” attack with the assistance from AACoFD.crews got a quick handle on it with one mini gun, multiple handlines and a ladder pipe.

There were no injuries reported and the cause of the fire is under investigation.

3 Alarm Warehouse Fire in SE Baltimore Story and Photos Courtesy Howard Meile, III

Shortly before 1500 hrs on April 28, 2026 a warehouse was reported to be on fire in the Greektown neighborhood of southeast Baltimore. Several different addresses were being received by Fire Communications. As Fire Box 41-30 was dispatched heavy smoke was visible throughout all parts of the City from that area. As the first units arrived on the scene of the Alliance Exterior Construction company at 4215 Eastern Avenue, heavy black smoke and fire was showing throughout the 80’ x 125’ corrugated metal warehouse. The warehouse is situated in an area with limited accessibility. There is only one road into the dead-end property and it sits next to a railroad line to the east. Water supply would be an immediate concern as well as the stability of the building involved. The warehouse is loaded with building materials along with acetylene, propane, gasoline, a waste oil tank, and adhesives. The initial attack would be exterior and setting up a collapse zone around the building. When Battalion Chief 1 arrived he took Command and asked for the working fire assignment, followed by the second alarm several minutes later. As a precaution Haz Mat 1 was also dispatched to the fire to check on interior hazards as well as the runoff from the building.

Engine companies had long hose lays to the fire and had to set up several relays. Ladder pipes were set up from adjacent streets below the property. Several truck companies were able to get to the building with their ladder pipes in place in the front and rear of the building. Two engine companies were also set up below the overpass road that leads to the property supplying additional lines up to the fire. Traffic was significantly impacted in the tightly congested neighborhood due to the long hose lays, and equipment.

Companies continued to pour water into the building and around 1530 a third alarm was struck out to secure more hydrants in the area to supplement the low water supply. A special call for three additional engine companies was requested around 1600 hours bringing additional manpower to the scene. Several mutual aid companies from Baltimore and Anne Arundel County supplemented the city’s crews on the scene. Crews from Howard, Harford, and Prince Georges County also transferred into the city houses of units that were on the scene.

The fire was contained around 1900 hours and crews were still trying to access several hot spots deep seated within the building. A vehicle inside the building also continued to burn with its gasoline, and foam was used to finally put it out.

There were no injuries to employees or firefighters reported. The fire was believed to be accidental. Fire investigators were working with the Baltimore Police Arson Squad to determine the exact cause.

Structure Fire in East Brandywine Township On April 30, 2026, at 1639 hrs, Honey Brook and surrounding stations were dispatched to the 1300 block of Horseshoe Pike, in East Brandywine Township for a reported dwelling.

Deputy 49 arrived and reported a barn that was fully involved, and established the Horseshoe Pike command.

First arriving units initiated the fire attack and established their own water supply via a nearby hydrant. Additional crews established the RIT assignment. When the RIT assignment was stood down, the crew helped open up and conduct overhaul efforts as well.

No injuries were reported and the cause is under investigation.

MVC with Entrapment in Honey Brook Twp. On April 23, 2026, at 1640 hrs, Honey Brook along with surrounding stations were dispatched to the 600 block of Twin County Road, in Honey Brook Township for a motor vehicle accident reported with entrapment.

Units arrived to find a tractor trailer vs. a small sedan, and confirmed its operator was trapped. Lieutenant 33B (Riehl) established the initial command while the crews stabilized the vehicle, initiated patient care, and removed the driver side door.

Ultimately, due to the severity of the extrication, crews removed the roof and rolled the dash to safely extricate the patient from the vehicle, who was transported to a local area hospital.

Barn Fire in Penn Township

On May 3, 2026, at 1649 hrs, West Grove and surrounding stations were dispatched to a reported barn fire in Penn Township. The call was reported by passers by with reports of a possible 2-story barn approximately 30 feet x 50 feet burning.

Units arrived and reported a barn fully involved in fire, with exposure to a vehicle, and horses running loose on the property. A “working fire” dispatch was requested by Deputy 22. Crews laid a 5-inch supply line up the driveway and commenced a fire attack, with Tanker 22 providing water.

Command also requested two additional brush units, as high winds had driven the fire into adjacent fields and it was rapidly spreading east. Arriving units deployed handlines to fight the brush fire, as crews began overhaul on the structure to complete extinguishment.

No injuries were reported and the cause is under investigation.

Building Fire in Woodsboro On April 16, 2026, at 1408 hrs, FCF&R units were dispatched for a reported building fire at Coppermine Road and Keys Chapel Road.

Units arrived to find a 50x100 sawmill building with heavy fire. A Tanker Task Force requested to bring more water. It was determined that no one was inside the building, however there were 2 outbuildings that were exposed.

It was determined that this would be a defensive operation only.

Garage Fire in Mount Airy On April 16, 2026, at 1914 hrs, Mount Airy was dispatched for a garage fire in the 1900 block of Gillis Falls Road.

Chief 1 arrived to find a 2-story detached garage with fire showing from the second floor. Crews stretched a hose line into the attic to attack the fire. Additional crews provided ladder, ventilation, and overhaul support. Tanker 1 provided water supply.

Winfield CF14-1 was assigned as the attic division supervisor. Chief 1 held command of the incident.

The fire was determined to be accidental by the MSFMO, an unspecified electrical failure. No injuries were reported.

Church Fire in Mount Airy

On May 5, 2026, at 1833 hrs, Mount Airy and surrounding stations were dispatched for a building fire in the 7100 block of Watersville Road.

Units arrived to find a 1-story church with basement, with fire showing from the roof. Crews were met with a well-advanced and fast-moving attic fire. Crews stretched a line in the front door and began opening up the ceiling and attacking the fire from the first floor. Tower 12 provided an aerial steam from over top of the building which assisted greatly in extinguishment.

The building was unoccupied at the time of the fire. There were no civilian or firefighter injuries. The fire is under investigation by the Office of the Maryland State Fire Marshal. The building sustained major damage and is uninhabitable.

Barn Fire in Braddock Heights

On May 12, 2026, at 2054 hrs, Sykesville Freedom District and surrounding stations were dispatched for a barn fire in the area of Ridge Road and Braddock Road.

First arriving units found a 150’ x 50’ barn with fire throughout. The barn was full of hay and straw and required extensive efforts for extinguishment and overhaul. Crews provided an aerial master stream. Tankers assisted with water supply and provided multiple tanks of water. Chief 1 held command of the incident with assistance from Winfield Chief 14-2.

There were no civilian or firefighter injuries. Debris from this fire smoldered for some time due to the amount of hay and straw that was stored in the barn. The fire is being investigated by the Maryland State Fire Marshal’s Office for origin and cause.

Barn Fire in Frederick

On April 20, 2026, at 2159 hrs, Units were dispatched to a reported barn fire in the 2800 block of Jefferson Pike, in Frederick.

Units arrived and identified a 20x30 barn fully engulfed in flames with multiple buildings threatened. A tanker task force was immediately requested and it took crews around 45 minutes to place the fire under control.

Two civilians were evaluated by EMS and declined further treatment.

Fire Marshals Office is handling the investigation.

On April 26, 2026, at 1540 hrs, New Midway and surrounding stations were dispatched to a building fire located in the 5200 block of Middleburg Road, in Union Bridge.

Units arrived to find a one-story detached garage fully involved. Crews stretched attacklines and began an aggressive attack on the fire.

No injuries were reported and the cause is under investigation.

The fire caused an estimated $150,000 in damage.

Fatal House Fire in Bowie

On May 6, 2026, PGFD units were dispatched to the 1100 block of Winding Brook Court for a report of a house on fire and an occupant trapped.

Units arrived to find a two-story single-family home with a well advanced fire showing. Crews quickly made entry into the home and located a 68 year-old male occupant and removed him just as a section of roof partially collapsed.

The patient was transported in critical condition and later succumbed to his injuries. Three PGFD Firefighters were also transported with minor injuries for evaluation.

Fire Investigators are investigating the origin and cause of the fire.

House Fire in Fort Washington

On April 9, 2026, at 1502 hrs, PGFD units were dispatched to the 12400 block of Asbury Drive, in Ft. Washington, for a reported house fire.

Units arrived to find a 2-story split-foyer with fire showing from the front of the home. Crews stretched attacklines and quickly extinguished

the fire. Additional crews performed searches which proved negative.

No civilian or firefighter injuries were reported and the cause of the fire is under investigation.

EMT Levels Up to Emergency Nurse Level Volunteer Fire Company congratulates Christine Deckard on becoming a Certified Emergency Nurse (CEN). A Registered Nurse (RN) at University of Maryland Upper Chesapeake Medical Center – Aberdeen, Deckard also serves Level as an active EMT. CEN is the foundational nursing specialty certification for RNs working in the emergency department and across the emergency spectrum. Nurses with a CEN are lifelong learners who demonstrate expertise in clinical practice, and are better prepared for professional development and overall career success.

Building For the Future:

Bittinger Volunteer Fire Department’s New Firehouse Project

Photos Courtesy Bittinger VFD In 2022, after identifying a property for sale in the Bittinger area of Garrett County, the Bittinger Volunteer Fire Department (BVFD) proactively approached local and state government leaders to seek support for a long-term facility solution. BVFD met with its local senator, delegate, and the Garrett County Commissioners to outline the project and discuss plans to erect a new firehouse in the Bittinger area, and the benefits it would bring to emergency services and the community.

With resounding support from local and state leadership, the department successfully secured a $1,000,000 capital grant through the State of Maryland to purchase and renovate a new facility. The building and property, purchased from Beitzel Corporation, consist of a 10,000plus square-foot facility and five acres that were previously used for fleet maintenance. This space will enable BVFD to store all of its apparatus under one roof, supporting improved maintenance and equipment readiness, while also providing better access to Route 495 for faster response times and the ability for the department to expand services as necessary.

The project reached a critical milestone in 2024, when the department officially closed on the property after a lengthy planning and approval process.

Now, the next phase is underway. A contractor has been selected, and renovations to convert the facility into BVFD’s new firehouse have begun.

Current projects include, but are not limited to, installation of an emergency generator, lighting upgrades, improvements to office and adminis-

trative space, the addition of crew quarters (such as bunk rooms, bathrooms, and showers), and additional access points to improve response times and operational efficiency.

This location and facility will, without a doubt, allow the department to take its operations to the next level and will provide an excellent, functional firehouse to support the department and its members well into the future.

Continued Use of the Current Firehouse While BVFD looks ahead to this new facility, the department remains committed to maintaining its current firehouse as an important part of the Bittinger community. The existing firehouse will continue to be utilized as a community facility available for rentals and for local meetings, gatherings, and community events. In addition, the social hall at the current firehouse will remain a key venue for the department’s annual fundraising activities, which are vital to supporting its operations and volunteer members. This approach allows the department to expand and modernize its emergency response capabilities while preserving a familiar and well-used community space for years to come.

This project would not have been possible without the strong support of local leadership and the community that BVFD serves. This new firehouse represents a major investment in public safety and a lasting commitment to serving the Bittinger area. BVFD look forward to sharing continued updates as renovations progress and this important project moves closer to completion.
