PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Aloha Maryknoll Community, One of the greatest things about coming to the end of another school year is to reflect on the wonderful experiences and growth that our students have achieved. Graduation festivities bring excitement to the school and to the student body as we celebrate another group of Maryknollers who are ready to embark on new adventures. This sense of excitement comes from the sense that these students have the skills, character, and confidence that comes from their Maryknoll experience.

At Baccalaureate Mass for the class of 2022, I highlighted the characteristics that Maryknoll Foundress, Mother Mary Joseph Rogers, describes as attributes of a Maryknoll Sister. They carry these with them, as they embark on their Mission. In her words, “I would have her distinguished by Christ-like charity, a limpid simplicity of soul, heroic generosity, selflessness, unfailing loyalty, prudent zeal, gracious courtesy, an adaptable disposition, solid piety, and the saving grace of a kindly humor.” Every day we are reminded, through the work that we do, the impact that our Founders had on our great school. We continue to mold students who are humble, caring, confident and capable, and know they have an obligation to make society better.

The Founders, students, alumni, parents, faculty and staff, and friends of Maryknoll, support us to continue our legacy. We are grateful!

95th Anniversary Mass On September 8, 2022, we gathered as a school community and had the honor of having Bishop Larry Silva presiding over Maryknoll School’s 95th Anniversary Mass celebration. Founded by the Maryknoll Sisters in 1927, we were blessed to have our Maryknoll Sisters on O‘ahu attend the celebration.

We were also incredibly blessed to have Hawai‘i Catholic Schools Superintendent Dr. Llewellyn Young, former school leaders, and members of our school board and alumni council join in our festivities. Alumna Mailani Makainai ’98 sang “Pu‘u Malia,” the beautiful mele she wrote for the school in 2014 which has become our signature song at graduation and on

special occasions. The culmination of the event was the entire community singing “Happy Anniversary” to honor Maryknoll School’s 95th anniversary, as well as the 75th anniversary of our sister organization Catholic Charities Hawai‘i—a serendipitous moment since the Maryknoll Sisters also founded the nonprofit.

How the resilience and determination of Maryknoll’s Lady Spartan Softball team led them to their first-ever state championship title When sophomore softball standout Jenna Sniffen ’24 tossed her signature screwball pitch to strike out top hitter Ailana Agbayani during the tying run at the plate in Hawai‘i High School Athletic Association’s (HHSAA) Softball State Championships final game, Spartan history was made.

This hard-fought win was a long time coming for the Lady Spartans, who earned their first state softball championship with a 5-2 win over their longtime rivals and defending state champions, the ‘Iolani Raiders.

The elation of the team was palpable as their historic triumph echoed throughout the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.

After 16 years in the making, the victory left assistant coach Marvin Malczon overcome with emotion, laying giddily on the grass near the dugout, clutching the team’s koa trophy. In a KHON interview following their momentous win, head coach John Uekawa shared his heartfelt thanks and praise for the team as well as the Maryknoll community who supported their success. “It’s unbelievable as well as surreal. Unbelievable because I’m so proud of all the players, the coaches, the parents, the alumni, the students; everybody joined in to make this championship so special,” he said.

athletic history was a slow and steady build, and one over a decade in the making for the Spartans. Uekawa was introduced to the school 17 years prior when his daughters, Heather ’07, and Hillary ’09, began attending Maryknoll, soon followed by his son, Mark ’13. A new school parent hoping to get involved on campus, he thought his prior Amateur Softball Association coaching experience could help support the program, though interest and participation was particularly low. “When I first started coaching at Maryknoll, we had a hard time finding players. We would have to recruit students who were basketball, track and field and

volleyball players,” he explains. Over the course of a decade, however, the Lady Spartans turned a corner with the addition of more experienced players and have been steadily gaining momentum ever since. “We got a great pitcher to help us begin the journey of success,” Uekawa states. He continues, “Parents and experienced players started to mention that Maryknoll was a school to be looked at with a decent softball program and great educational learning.” For student athletes and coaches, finding the balance between academics and athletics can often be a challenge, but they persevered as a team. “I believe our athletes and coaches live the motto ‘to whom much is given, much is expected,’” notes athletic director Ben Valle ’84. In the spirit of Noblesse Oblige, it comes as no surprise to see Maryknoll’s athletic department led by proud alumni in Valle and associate athletic director Blaine Gier ’88. For those who have experienced firsthand the virtues and fellowship of the Maryknoll community, finding their way back to support school success is a testament to its teachings. “We are

a small department but where we may stand out is in our knowledge of who we are as a school and where we want to go as a program. Our spirit comes from being alumni of the school and our past successes. Our coaches are an extension of our passion for success— in the classroom and in competition,” says Gier.

For the Lady Spartans, those strides garnered acclaim over the course of a decade, as the team qualified for the state tournament seven times and had a winning record nine out of 10 years with six Interscholastic League of Honolulu (ILH) championships. Though they had been making exciting strides in recent years, those achievements were met with unimaginable obstacles when COVID-19 swept the globe and the world shut down in its wake. With abrupt school and sports closures forcing students home to transition to online learning, student athletes felt the acute absence of their respective sports as they waited for restrictions to ease. When asked how the pandemic impacted the Lady

Spartans with the cancellation of the 2020 season, however, Uekawa describes the delay as a hindrance, but one that didn’t diminish their spirit. “It didn’t bother our team at all—all they wanted to do was play!

Whatever the restrictions were, we didn’t let it bother us,” he insists.

Though the stall may have delayed their practice, it ignited their passion and determination for the sport, and they returned for the 2021 season energized and determined. Again, they worked their way to the top with a stellar season finish, earning their sixth ILH title and a well-deserved place at states. But the team was met with disappointment yet again when COVID-19 surged in 2021 and restrictions ultimately canceled the state tournament.

Through each successive obstacle, however, the Lady Spartans took their challenges in stride and persevered.

When the 2022 regular season began, the team was ranked first, but met with difficulty in their first four ILH games, starting the year with one win and three losses. “It

reshaped the whole team,” Uekawa states. “But we still had to show up to win, as other teams wanted to beat us. To an extent, some teams based their season on beating us, and other teams used us as motivation for their players,” he explains. The team came together as a cohesive unit and hit a mid-season stride, earning seven straight wins before squaring off with the Raiders. Though the defending ‘Iolani champions secured the ILH crown with an impressive season performance, the Spartans endured. The team secured three straight wins in their first-ever state finals appearance before the highly anticipated rematch against the Raiders for the coveted state title.

Heading into the championship game, the Spartans maintained their focus, putting faith and family at the center of their sport. The game came mere days after junior shortstop Nellian McEnroe-Marinas’ four-month-old nephew, Xavier, passed away. In a show of solidarity with their friend and teammate, the players wore heart stickers on their helmets and each home run was met with a player’s

emotional tap of the heart and a point to the sky in honor of Xavier.

Such gestures are a testament to the team’s formidable strength and dedication, not just to their sport, but to each other. In a touching tribute to their teammates, the Lady Spartans dedicated their first ever state softball D1 championship win to the former seniors from the last two seasons who were unable to play in the COVIDcanceled state tournaments, as well as to McEnroe-Marinas’ late nephew. It was a heartfelt way to commemorate the challenges and triumphs the team endured together and illustrates the family dynamic they cultivated as a team.

After a hard-won showdown with the Raiders, the Lady Spartans were resolute, beating ‘Iolani 5-2, thanks in large part to the exceptional leadership of team captains McEnroeMarinas ’23, Carys Murakami ’22, and Sniffen ’24. The players not only led their team to victory but also celebrated outstanding seasons individually as well. McEnroeMarinas batted .692 (9-13) in the state

tournament with three home runs, one double, 11 RBIs and seven runs scored in four games. Senior second baseman Murakami scored twice against ‘Iolani, batting .500 (8-16) and scoring 11 runs in four games. But it was sophomore pitcher Sniffen who took the season by storm. Sniffen was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player, pitching seven innings with 10 strikeouts, earning a home run in the first inning, and was also named the Impact Player of the game. She credits the improvement of her dynamic screwball to former UH Hilo pitcher Sheary Labasan, which was instrumental throughout the season and peaked during the championships. Sniffen's 10-strikeout game against the defending champions was an unexpected phenomenon which sealed the team’s victorious fate and made her the unequivocal standout player of the tournament.

despite their trials. “This year’s team overcame a tough start and didn’t give in, and that is what I believe was the difference. They stayed together and kept working. Coach kept this team looking forward—that was very important to their success,” says Valle.

Gier echoes that sentiment, noting Uekawa’s commitment to the team as a pillar of the program’s evolution.

“Coach John’s knowledge and experience is shown daily at practice with his players. His dedication to softball has helped us to gain respect as a program in the state of Hawai‘i.

He is passionate about the sport and helping to develop young women,” he explains.

Maryknoll’s reputation as a humble Catholic school with a tight-knit community has long been celebrated in the world of academia, and their athletic prowess has followed suit. “The missing link was incorporating sports with the Catholic education and environment.

The difference was in the coaches, who were humble on the outside and ferociously competitive on the

inside,” explains Uekawa. He credits the success of the team to their humility and belief in themselves, beginning with their team captains and extending to every member of the team. “Murakami, McEnroe-Marinas, and Sniffen led by example—their beliefs, confidence in themselves and their teammates were their best attributes. But we also had a great bunch of seniors that had gone through the failures of not winning states and not wanting it to happen to them. The rest of the players that started or played a reserve role played it like they owned it. They were readily available when called upon and mentally prepared to start or be inserted as a substitute.”

Uekawa's ability to lead the team is also a testament to the support he has received personally, which allows him to show up for his players with such steadfast resolve. In doing so, Uekawa credits the involvement and encouragement of his family for continuing to support him in his coaching career, especially his beloved wife of 35 years, Sally.

After an unforgettable season, Uekawa, Malczon and the Lady Spartans have earned due praise for embodying the values of Noblesse Oblige both on and off the field.

Their accomplishments are a product of the nurturing families who have raised them and the lessons imparted through their studies. “The successes of our programs are due to the work ethic instilled in our student athletes.

Through various sports successes, our coaches have managed to validate what they teach our students about daily work and putting in the extra time to improve their skills and knowledge,” says Gier. Though the team bid adieu to seven seniors this year, including Murakami, the remaining players are determined to strive for new goals together and the junior varsity team is poised for play. Galvanized by the thrill of their triumph, the Spartans are sure to remain diligent in their preparations for the 2023 season as they defend their title.

Storied Speech M A R Y K N O L L’ S S P E E C H T E A M S H A V E E V O L V E D A N D R E A C H E D N E W HEIGHTS, THANKS TO THE DEDICATION OF DR. FRAN WONG ’69 AND HER FA MILY ’S TR ADITION IN TE ACHING

Throughout the course of their formative years, students realize the unique skills, interests, and talents that set them apart from their peers.

Some find solace in theater or art, others find purpose in technology, dance, or sports. What is essential for each to thrive in their respective interests, however, is the sense of community they find in their practice, and the encouragement that bolsters them forward. At Maryknoll, Dr. Fran Wong ’69 has spent a decade coaching the high school speech team not only to success, but also garnered a reputation of fun and fulfillment along the way.

Dr. Wong’s legacy within the Maryknoll community is rooted in her family’s legacy of education. Though she officially retired from teaching in 2012 after 31 years at Maryknoll, she has continued to guide students on the high school speech team for 18

FALL 2022

the past decade. “I think teaching is in my blood because my mom was a teacher at Maryknoll, I’m a teacher at Maryknoll, and my daughter is also a teacher at Maryknoll. So three generations have taught there,” she explains. Throughout her tenure, Dr. Wong spent the majority of her career teaching English on the middle school campus, where she was first introduced to the speech team. At the time, current Maryknoll President and Head of School Shana Tong ’83 was working as a middle school teacher and speech coach and was transitioning into an administrative role. Dr. Wong took over as the new coach and began planting seeds of confidence in her students as they learned to hone their communication skills. “We had a really strong team, but when the kids went to high school, they didn’t continue their career in speech,” she says.

When Dr. Wong moved across campus to teach at the high school in 2009, student interest in speech was lackluster, so one of her first tasks was to revive the team. Despite her departure, the middle school team continued to thrive, thanks to Dr. Wong’s daughter, Dr. Anne Sylva ’97.

Dr. Sylva joined the middle school faculty and inherited the speech team from her mother, working together to support their students through the middle school tournaments and into the more rigorous high school program. “The high school team is a totally different experience because the stakes are higher,” Dr. Wong explains. “The high school team is associated with the National Speech and Debate Association as an honor society, so students have to earn membership to be recognized with honors at graduation.”

Participants are required to attend

tournaments, where they earn points and rise in rank based on their performance scores. Judges are required for each tournament, so Dr. Wong requests parent involvement as a show of support for their children. The experience is often eye-opening and thrilling for parents to see the students transform onstage.

Students select their choice of performance in storytelling, duo, interpretive, impromptu, original oratory, and congressional debate categories. While some coaches do research on speaking techniques, Dr. Wong prefers to let her students lead by interest. The result has been tremendous, as she notes the transformations she has witnessed.

“Some kids were very reluctant, quiet, and shy when they first started.

Gradually they competed and it helped bring them out of their shell.

By senior year, they could get up in front of anybody and do anything,” she proudly shares.

the camaraderie he experienced throughout his five years on both the middle and high school teams. “The Speech and Debate Team has been one of the best communities I have ever been a part of,” he says. “You are pushed to be the best person you can be while having an amazing time with your friends.” That support was paramount throughout the pandemic when tournaments headed online, first in the form of recorded performance tapes in 2020 and then as live-streamed online performances in 2021 and 2022. Despite their challenges, the tight-knit team maintained a strong showing, earning the prestigious honor of Top District Team in Hawai‘i this year.

Dr. Wong's great joy is in the bond the speech team cultivates through these shared experiences. “Seeing the team together is really neat. It’s very energizing and motivating because they have so much energy. While the pressures of competition can be stressful, Dr. Wong’s objective focuses on virtue over victory. “I don’t care about winning. The main thing I ask the kids for is their commitment,” she says. Rather than striving for top honors, she encourages her team to strive for the perfect attendance award, which recognizes the collective effort of the entire team. Ensuring students learn the value of honoring their commitments has not only yielded strong attendance records but has also cultivated a unique team bond. USING THE SKILLS OF RESILIENCE, PATIENCE, TEAMWORK, AND INITIATIVE TO BUILD CHANGE Navigating our changing world can be challenging, but through the Maryknoll STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) and Robotics programs, students can acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to build a better future while also understanding the crucial link between technology and collaboration.

“Currently Maryknoll’s STEM pathway offers coursework in programming, robotics, building, research, and industry-related learning experiences,” high school STEM/computer science teacher and Coding Club advisor, Dr. Chanelle Tolentino, explains.

The Coding Club, known as the Spartan Devs, trains by building games and apps that relate to realworld problems. The club ties well into the courses Tolentino teaches.

However, she explains that “though our senior leadership and members tend to be those who have completed or are taking Introduction to Computer Science and Advanced Placement Computer Science, […] it’s not necessary at all,” and encourages students of all grades and coding levels to try it out.

Students may also partake in Maryknoll’s two after-school STEM clubs to further utilize lessons learned during the day and develop their abilities. The Maryknoll Spartechs Robotics Team practices engineering processes through hands-on projects related to mechanics, electricity, programming, and computer-aided design (CAD). Dr. Aaron Tamura-Sato, high school math teacher and Robotics Team advisor, notes that he is “very

Both Tamura-Sato and Tolentino are optimistic about how these programs will continue to grow.

The Coding Club is excited to begin working with a Microsoft developer, preparing for HACC and the Project Poke competition. The Robotics Team will soon start on their mock builds with the help of their new computer numerical control (CNC) machine, and hope to increase their community service and outreach.

Beyond knowledge of new technology and fundamental engineering skills, a Maryknoll STEM education helps students gain passion for all STEM topics and builds excitement in order to take on the world! “Because tech changes so quickly, sometimes it feels like the only real relevant skills we can train students for are resilience, patience, teamwork, and initiative. If those are the common characteristics of our graduating scholars, I’d be quite proud of what we’re doing,” says Tolentino.

Made for Media HOW MEDIA TRANSFORMED CREATIVE MEDIA PROGRAM DIRECTOR DERRICK BULATAO AND INSPIRED HIM TO PAY IT FORWARD

In a time where technology reigns supreme, the role of media has advanced exponentially. From digital media to social media, the ways in which we receive information have dramatically changed, calling for curriculum to grow with it. To enhance its Creative Media Pathway, Maryknoll welcomed famed radio DJ, entertainer, and entrepreneur Derrick Bulatao to take the helm.

Known to many as DJ Kutmaster Spaz, Derrick Bulatao’s media experience is vast and diverse. He began honing his DJing skills at the age of 16, practicing alone in his bedroom and hyping up an imaginary crowd. “I’ve always said, if you stay ready, you don’t have to get ready. If you practice an art form—whether you practice DJing, editing, whatever it

Opportunity came knocking when a local DJ missed his flight, and the promoter was looking for someone to open his show for rap and hip-hop icon MC Hammer. Bulatao stepped in and was ready to go. He not only wowed the crowd in his debut performance but was offered more

work as the promoter’s concert DJ. From that moment on, his trajectory in the entertainment scene took flight. He was a mainstay in the local music scene, DJing for every concert that came to Hawai‘i throughout the mid-90s, as well as in the top nightclub in the state. One night he caught the eye of a radio program director who asked if he would be interested in mixing on air, and without hesitation, he said yes.

“Opportunities always presented themselves, and I was always ready, so that is the advice I give to my students,” Bulatao explains. Emboldened by his success, he went on to establish DIS-N-DAT Media Group in 2003 and starred in a hit television show on OC16 of the same name. Throughout his career, the production company became known for its prowess in video and music production, multimedia, and creative media. Though Bulatao garnered a wealth of media experience throughout his illustrious career, the multihyphenate talent yearned to pass on his knowledge.

His teaching career unfolded at Saint Louis School in 2019, and the experience ignited a newfound passion. He was introduced to the Spartan ‘ohana upon his departure from Saint Louis when he served as the digital media instructor during summer school. “I love the community here,” he states. “Everybody is so friendly here and welcomed me with open arms, so it was a very easy transition.”

When summer school ended, Bulatao accepted a fulltime teaching position and the chance to develop a robust, comprehensive digital media program. In August 2021, he

began teaching digital media for grades 6-8. His curriculum focused largely on public speaking and its impacts: how to be a good communicator and how to channel that skillset into public service announcements to make students’ voices heard. He added a high school Introduction to Broadcast Media course to his teaching line during the second semester.

The response was so positive that the doors of potential flew open, and support for the expansion of the program at Maryknoll was unanimous.

Bulatao’s course offerings have grown to three different courses for grades 6-8. In addition to those courses, he also returned to Maryknoll’s 2022 summer program to teach the history of the disc jockey art form, where students learned how to break down a beat, receive an introduction to DJing, as well as learn how to make their own live megamix.

Not only have his course offerings increased, but his classroom environment has expanded as well. Within three months, Bulatao upgraded the school’s former media center.

The impressive space includes a podcast corner, green screen wall, photo infinity wall, professional recording studio, sound booth, recording console, and five streaming cameras.

Bulatao also offered his equipment and skillset to support the Maryknoll community during the challenges of the pandemic. He set up his streaming cameras during oncampus sports games when COVID-19 restrictions did not allow for families and guests to attend games. “l got all five cameras up and we livestreamed the games on YouTube so

There are a lot more opportunities in Hawai‘i now that are really exciting.”

When asked to describe the creative media program, Bulatao doesn’t miss a beat. “l would describe it as the foundation for building confidence in the students—teaching them to be great communicators and presenters, and also utilizing technology to be their voice to deliver a positive message.” He credits his business partner with helping him establish his curriculum, based on three decades worth of handson media experience. But perhaps even more fascinating than the subject matter itself is Bulatao’s approach to teaching these invaluable communication skills.

“My business partner created what we call a self-code. We have four different personality types: one who is more outgoing, one who is a thinker, one who is a planner, and one who is more emotional. At the beginning of the year, I teach the students the self-code so they can learn more about themselves and others and everyone’s individual communication styles.

Not only does the self-code help me know how best to communicate with my students, but it also helps them to better communicate with their classmates,” he explained.

Now in his second year of teaching at Maryknoll, Bulatao’s hunger for program development is insatiable. He is eager to watch his students flourish in a variety of mediums, progressing by grade level. Sixth grade will set the foundation for digital media and multimedia arts by focusing on students’ public speaking abilities, as well as their introduction to film and the basics of film production.

These skills can be easily adapted to students’ real-life experiences, such as creating highlight reels for college applications or producing social media campaigns for a family business. “I’m teaching them to

Leveraging more than three decades of experience in radio, television, film, and more, Bulatao has transformed the digital capabilities of Maryknoll’s campus and empowered his students’ communication as well. His enthusiasm for the subject matter and desire to support student success has made an indelible mark on the school community.

“Throughout my career, I’ve been incredibly blessed.

I’ve been fortunate and grateful for the many opportunities I’ve had, but by far, being a teacher is the most rewarding pathway,” Bulatao says. “When I see the lightbulb go off in my students’ eyes, that’s worth a million dollars to me.”

Such impassioned engagement is a testament to how McMaster has helped to raise the political consciousness of her students, both in and out of the classroom.

After 44 years as an educator, McMaster shows no signs of stopping. Despite such monumental shifts as retirement, a move to Hawai‘i, and adapting to online learning throughout the pandemic, she remains steadfast about her role as a teacher.

“It’s still fun!” she exclaims. “I can’t imagine not getting up every day and going and hanging out with really fun kids. Maybe when it’s no longer fun anymore it will be time to reconsider, but I still think it’s a pretty amazing gig.”

Faith, Charity, and Hope CELEBR ATING THE BAP TIS TE FA MILY AS THIS YE AR’S NOBLESSE OBLIGE AWARD RECIPIENTS With deep roots in Hawai‘i, the Baptiste ‘ohana — Emily Marciel Baptiste ’53, the late Arnold Baptiste Sr., Arnie Baptiste Jr., Marc Baptiste, Debbie Baptiste, and the entire Baptiste family — was celebrated as the 2022 Noblesse Oblige awardees.

Faith, charity, and hope have been the pillars of the Baptiste family starting with Emily’s grandparents, John and Lydia Marciel. Emily remembers, “They taught us the responsibilities of our religion, our commitment to the community, and to practice all of this in our daily lives.” John, a supervising principal, and Lydia, an elementary school teacher, raised their family of thirteen children to be devoted to the Catholic faith.

From humble beginnings, Emily and Arnold Baptiste Sr. worked hard to create a bright future. After 28

graduating from University of Hawai‘i, Emily and Arnold Sr. raised their children Debbie, Arnold Jr., and Marc in California. Arnold Sr. was a well-loved politician whose legacy is creating one of the largest open-space districts in California. Emily carried her Maryknoll teachings well with her, tirelessly volunteering her time to her community and bringing the aloha spirit to those she touched.

Arnold and Emily returned to Hawai‘i in 1982 to care for Emily’s aging kūpuna. Arnold Sr. took on a job as a division president for a small health insurer straining to gain a foothold in Hawai‘i. Emily spent her days working alongside Arnold and all her other time caring for her mother.

Unfortunately, the mainland company went under, leaving Arnold and Emily unemployed and unsure of their financial future. Arnie Jr.,

working at his own company in San Francisco tried to convince his father to open an office in Hawai‘i with him. Still, Arnold Sr. had a vision after spending six years building an insurance company. Convinced of his idea, Arnold and Arnie laid out a plan and met with several groups on the mainland. One committed to provide the capital needed to lay the foundation for what would become HMAA (Hawai‘i Medical Assurance Association).

The next two years were humbling as Arnold worked endlessly to realize his vision. His son Marc joined him, working side by side as HMAA’s infancy took hold. Arnie was working remotely, building several familyowned companies providing services to HMAA. By 1995, Arnie, Joji, and their children moved to Hawai‘i to join the

fray and HMAA grew. In 1997 Arnold handed the reins to Arnie and Marc, who traded roles of CEO and president over the years, supporting each other. Arnold Sr. passed in 2002.

In 2008, Arnie, carrying forward Anorld Sr.’s legacy, established an Employee Stock Ownership Plan for 140 employees of their family-owned companies. Today their companies are 100% employee-owned with Cristofer Baptiste ’02, Jason Baptiste ’04, and Aleksandre "Nikki" Baptiste '07 Mieger working as senior managers in the company.

Over the years, their family has supported many charitable organizations: Adult Friends for Youth, the Girls Got Grit program at Sacred Hearts Academy, Chaminade University, Hawai‘i Foodbank, American Cancer Society, Maryknoll School, Friends of Hawai‘i Charities, The Adopt a Family Program, Imua Family Services, American Diabetes Association, Hope Hits Harder Foundation, UCSF Medical Center, Hawai‘i Food & Wine Festival’s Keiki in the Kitchen, Diamond Head Theatre, The Ironworkers Scholarship Fund, Navy Seal Fund, and many others.

In addition, the Baptiste family also creates many opportunities for their employees to get involved in the community. They strongly believe that when you encourage employees to serve, you teach them to be good stewards of our community.

Whether as individuals, as a family, or as a company, the 2022 recipients of the Noblesse Oblige award live by this motto every day. What was planted by John and Lydia Marciel many years ago, has blossomed into a legacy of faith, charity, and hope.

2022 NOBLESSE OBLIGE AWARD & SCHOLARSHIP DINNER The Baptiste family was honored on May 21, 2022 at Maryknoll School’s first in-person fundraising gala since 2019. The Noblesse Oblige Award & Scholarship dinner brought together more than 300 alumni, parents, faculty, staff, students, and friends to the Sheraton Waikiki Hotel. The evening started with a wonderful cocktail reception that included a silent auction featuring many gift baskets created with love by the faculty, students, and families of Maryknoll.

Guests could also participate in a fun wine pull and donate directly to a classroom through the wish tree. After a delicious dinner, guests were treated to an incredible concert by the Makaha Sons. This event raised more than $200,000 for the Noblesse Oblige endowed scholarship fund. Top scholarship recipients Crishelle-Ann Ildefonso ’22 and Jasmine Rocha ’23 shared how the scholarship has helped them both on their educational journeys. It was a fantastic evening enjoyed by all. Cherished events were back, philanthropy at our school became even stronger, and our students thrived in sports, academics, and more.

Our property and endowment assets continue to grow and the portfolio is managed well by our exceptional Foundation for Maryknoll School Board of Directors and its new president, Kevin Sakamoto. Our school board has created a business strategy group focusing on supporting planned Maryknoll strategic initiatives, as well as addressing enrollment and student retention improvements.

Last fall, Maryknoll School and Sacred Heart Church launched a capital campaign titled “Living Our Faith, Creating Our Future – A Campaign for Bachelot Hall.” An excited school and parish community united together, and in just a few months raised more than $2.5 million dollars (84% of goal) towards the renovation of Bachelot Hall to become a performing arts center and parish hall. Construction should be completed before the start of the 2023-24 school year.

In February, more than 500 donors from our community showed their love for Maryknoll during our 2nd annual Spartan Giving Day. In May, more than 300 excited guests gathered for our first in-person fundraising event in three years to honor the Baptiste Family for their continued service in the community. This spring, the Lady Spartans Varsity I Softball Team became the HHSAA Division I State Champions and the Maryknoll High School Speech Team received recognition as the Top District Team in Hawai‘i by the National Speech and Debate Association. These student accolades were the first in Maryknoll’s history!

Heralding the start of summer, graduation is always a special time. This year’s ceremonies were held in person for the first time since 2019, to the delight of the class of 2022 and families. Graduation marks both an ending and a beginning, inspiring warm memories of the past and big dreams for the future.

As I write this for the fall edition of The Knoller, the Office of Institutional Advancement embarks on a new beginning as well, with the selection of a new executive director for the Foundation and Director of Institutional Advancement. We thank Wendy M. Chang for her five+ years of leadership in this role and wish her well in her new endeavors. She clearly has been a major force in helping the Foundation achieve its fundraising goals.

We look forward with tremendous hope to the next exciting chapter of Maryknoll School. The successes of this year would not have been possible without you. We extend our most sincere appreciation to you for your support of Maryknoll School in producing college-preparatory students who make our country and the world around us a better place, all in the spirit of Noblesse Oblige.

PAYING IT FORWARD Attend any Maryknoll game in the Maryknoll Community Center and chances are, you’ll see Darrell Mattos ’63 and Marjorie Mattos cheering on our student Spartans. Fiercely loyal to maroon and gold, they regularly attend games, school events, and donate to the annual fund. Maryknoll is a place that’s near and dear to them, as the school has been a part of their family for generations. Fun fact: there has been a family member enrolled as a student continuously since 1937!

because they didn’t have a ride. Others would skip game days for which they were assigned snack duty because they couldn’t afford food for the entire team. The Mattos’, or “Coach Mattos” and “Mom” as they were affectionately nicknamed, never hesitated to help; in fact, they treated these kids like their own.

If a player needed shoes, Coach Mattos bought him shoes.

If someone needed a ride to practice or a game, Mom picked him up in her green station wagon. If someone had a dirty uniform, Mom would launder it. If there was no one at home for the kids after school, they were welcomed into the Mattos household for a safe space to hang out, do their homework, and grab a snack. Darrell also felt the need to end costly potlucks after games—baseball ones are legendary for their extravagance—because he knew some families couldn’t afford the extra expense.

Supporting Maryknoll’s students comes easily to the couple. Both grew up in large families with parents who taught them the importance of helping others. Darrell also learned principles through sports, including respect and humility.

Marjorie’s father started the O‘ahu Youth Council. In raising his daughter, he taught her empathy for others. “I really wanted to work when I was young, for no particular reason, I just wanted a job,” Marjorie remembers. “But my father wouldn’t let me because he said I would be taking a job away from a kid who Darrell Mattos ’63, Marjorie Mattos, Noah really needed it, whose family depended Loomis ’28, and Jonah Loomis ’29 at Noah’s on the money.”

Darrell and Marjorie started dating in college and have been together ever since; this September, they celebrated 56 years of marriage.

With shared principles and complementary spirits, the two raised their children, Christine ’85 and the late Dwayne, in a household that promoted community and charity to those in need.

Sports played a huge role in the family’s lives, as both Darrell and Marjorie knew it was a way for kids to keep busy during the summer and after school, essentially keeping them out of trouble. Darrell was integral in the creation of Salt Lake District Park, giving kids a space to play, at a time when there was none. He ran the Lakeside community leagues to foster friendship and sportsmanship between athletes who would usually be rivals during school seasons.

As a volunteer and coach with the Lakeside Police Activities League (PAL), Darrell realized early on that many of the youngsters he taught didn’t have the financial means to participate in organized sports. Some would show up to baseball practice in slippers while a few would skip practice

When the kids would thank him, Darrell would simply reply, “What we give to you now, you give back to your community”—Noblesse Oblige in its simplest form. Marjorie says that tenet is one of the things she admires most about her husband: if you receive help, you give back. In some way or form, you return that aloha to your community.

The couple’s impact was profound.

Many of the athletes, now adults with families of their own, returned to thank them for their generosity and care. “If it wasn’t for you, I don’t know where I would be now,” and “If it wasn’t for [Coach Mattos], I would be in jail,” has been uttered by several. Gratitude isn’t the only theme in common with the athletes; they took the Mattos’ tenet to heart and practiced Noblesse Oblige in their lives. Several became coaches, carrying on the coaching style that Darrell imparted. Others give back to the couple in their unique way. One athlete who runs an auto shop helps them with car repairs and charges them “Uncle Darrell’s special rate.”

Humble about their generosity, Darrell and Marjorie insist the spirit of Noblesse Oblige is easy to propagate. What they gifted, and continue to gift, to their community is something we can all do. Whether donating money, volunteering time, giving a compliment, or offering a nice gesture, you are helping someone feel special, feel seen, and feel loved. And chances are, your kindness in action will be remembered by the people who needed it most and paid forward to their communities.

CULTIVATING NOBLESSE OBLIGE Being immersed in Maryknoll School culture for 13 years does something to you. Core principles such as service to others and building community take hold in your mind. Michele Tagawa ’77 Saito is a proud alumna who has Noblesse Oblige ingrained in her soul. In her words, “Maryknoll cultivates the act of giving back.”

Reflecting upon her time at Maryknoll, Michele expresses immense gratitude for the school laying a solid foundation for her, teaching her Christian values and empathy for others. She recalls that her high school Theology class taught her more about values than anything else, like caring for your neighbor, honoring your elders, and putting the needs of the poor and vulnerable first. Ideals that are propagated by the Maryknoll Sisters themselves.

A retired business executive, Michele is a modern-day retiree: one who doesn’t stop moving! In high school and college, she was active in community service clubs and continued her volunteerism when she

entered the workforce. She has volunteered for numerous nonprofits and their boards, including Prevent Child Abuse Hawai‘i, Junior Achievement of Hawai‘i, and the Hawai‘i Business Roundtable. One of her proudest achievements came during her time as a Pacific Century Fellow. She helped to create a mentorship program for at-risk youth in which adult volunteers took kids on excursions to places the kids might not have otherwise had the opportunity to visit, such as University of Hawai‘i volleyball games or day camps.

Her passion is, and always has been, helping at-risk youth. Through her volunteerism, Michele learned that all children are unique.

She learned to accept and embrace their individuality. But despite their differences, she knows one universal truth: one small moment of kindness can have a profound impact on a child’s life trajectory, especially one that needs encouragement. One who needs to hear the words, “Yes, you can do this!” With her gifts to Maryknoll, Michele knows that she is helping some children who need that extra nudge.

Spartan Giving Day 2022 R ALLYING TOGE THER TO SHOW LOVE FOR MARY K NOLL

February (noun): The second month of the year; a month that many associate with feelings of love and appreciation.

On February 10, Maryknoll celebrated a successful second annual giving day as the Spartan community rallied to demonstrate Noblesse Oblige and show their love and appreciation for the school. Together, alumni, families, faculty and staff, students and friends raised more than $115,000 to benefit Maryknoll and its students.

Traditionally, a giving day has been a fundraising staple for colleges and universities with a history spanning at least one decade. With the rise of social media presence and email communication supporting sustainability efforts, giving days have recently started to gain a foothold in K-12 institutions. Maryknoll used the pandemic as an opportunity to explore a giving day as an option to engage 54

and excite the Spartan community near and far.

For the 2022 Spartan Giving Day, students were able to share their story on why they love Maryknoll and encouraged others to do the same. Whether it is because of the teachers, academics, extracurricular opportunities such as speech team and working on The Toad, athletics, or friendships formed, our community took the time to reflect on their love for Maryknoll.

The day began with grade and middle school students enthusiastically greeting families at morning drop-off. Lots of energetic sign-waving and coffee and tea for parents helped to jump start Spartan Giving Day. Things then officially kicked off with a livestream from the grade school campus, featuring alumna Michele Saito ’77 announcing her challenge gift to excite and motivate the community.

Spartan Giving Day continued with festivities on the high school campus, where students lined up to donate for a chance to soak their favorite teacher! Beloved teachers showed their support for Maryknoll by signing up to “take one for the team” as students donated between $1 - $100 to dump water — by the bucketful — on the teacher of their choice.

Throughout the good-spirited lunch hour, students raised well over $1,000 for the school.

President Shana Tong ’83 capped off the day by announcing a fantastic matching gift opportunity made possible by the Maryknoll School Board and Foundation for Maryknoll School Board members. Collectively, they would contribute $25,000 once we reached $50,000, getting us to our goal of $75,000 raised before the day was even done.

campuses, but the United States, and brought out some fierce (but friendly) competition between alumni classes.

The farthest gift traveled 5,069 miles from North Andover, Massachusetts.

The classes of 1997 and 1985 battled it out until the literal last minute of Spartan Giving Day, with the class of 1997 pulling through with amazing alumni participation. Through stories told on social media, students gathering to support Spartan Giving Day, and classmates connecting with each other via emails and phone calls, it was clear that we all Maryknoll.

On the morning of June 2, graduation festivities began as family and friends gathered to bless the Class of 2022 at the annual Baccalaureate Mass. Families of students in the Maroon & Gold Society received a special gift in recognition of their children’s attendance at Maryknoll from pre-K / kindergarten through twelfth grade, spending 13 or more years at our school. That evening, we honored our graduates at Class Night, a decades-old tradition celebrating seniors and their accomplishments. With the historic Hawai'i Theatre providing a gorgeous ambience, Maryknoll faculty and staff

presented class awards and oversaw the memorable candlelight ceremony, in which graduates bestow the Maryknoll “torch” to the incoming senior class.

The next day, on June 3, seniors excitedly gathered at the Neal Blaisdell Center Arena for Maryknoll’s 88th Annual Commencement, entering the building as students and leaving as alumni. After being bedecked with lei and embraced by their families, our young Spartans boarded buses to spend their last night as a class together at Project Graduation, held this year at the Kroc Center.

We share our heartfelt aloha and mahalo with extraordinary veteran educators in celebration of their retirement Teachers are the unsung heroes of a community, as they nurture the evolution of our children throughout their most formative years. In a close-knit school like Maryknoll, educators are as intrinsic to the fabric of our home as the virtues they espouse. Teachers provide a foundation for growth, guiding students along the path of self-discovery and celebrating their accomplishments along the way. We are forever grateful to our dedicated Maryknoll teachers for their benevolence, brilliance, and for the values they instill through their teachings. In honor of their extraordinary contributions, we share our heartfelt aloha and mahalo to our beloved educators of our Maryknoll ‘ohana who have cultivated community for the past four decades: Kathy Felipe, Lucille Kern, Colleen Yoda ’75 Liu, Mary Jane (Arce) Vannatta, Sandy Yamane, and David Yamasaki. Mary Jane (Arce) Vannatta Of the 43 illustrious years Mary Jane Vannatta has spent inspiring the minds of countless students, 42 have been spent as a dedicated teacher at Maryknoll. It is not by chance that her pathway to education led to Maryknoll, as she spent much of her childhood revering the Maryknoll Sisters of St. John the Baptist who taught her. “For as long as I remember, I deeply admired the nuns—I thought they were superhuman,” she recalls. “I put them on a pedestal because I thought they were special and I knew I wanted to teach.” Vannatta was equally devoted to her parochial studies as well as her duties in church, where she got a chance to teach religious education and was very active in the parish. She graduated from Sacred Hearts Academy in 1974 and received her degree in elementary education from the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa in 1978.

Kathy Felipe Kathy Felipe started at Maryknoll in 2007. She worked in kindergarten and first grade as a teacher assistant and teaching religion classes. This last school year, her 15th year at Maryknoll School, “Ms. Kathy” as she is known to her students, took on a new role as a religion teacher to numerous students in kindergarten through fourth grade. “Fr. EJ Resinto, our Pastor, once told us that our job as teachers was to make sure that students know that they are loved by Jesus Christ. My goal has been to work towards this aspiration as I taught students in my religion classes,” Kathy said. She officially retired from teaching in June of 2022 and is looking forward to walking with friends and her husband, Ed; traveling to exciting destinations; and relaxing with her family. Kathy is sad that she’ll no longer see her former co-workers daily. She said, “I will also miss the little notes and pictures students often made for me.”

Vannatta was set to complete her master’s degree in special education when fate came calling at Maryknoll within a year and a half of receiving her undergraduate degree and she has never looked back. She began as a 6th grade teacher at Maryknoll in 1980 (then known as Ms. Arce), and continued to teach in both the 6th and 7th grades until her retirement. Throughout her time at Maryknoll, Vannatta has set the standard for educational excellence by the impact and inspiration she has had upon her students, most notably in her specialty subjects of math and religion. She was nominated for the Presidential Award for Math and Science teaching and in 2021 she received the Golden Pineapple Trophy and was recognized as Hawai‘i Catholic Schools’ Teacher of the Year.

When reflecting upon a career that spans over four decades and has encompassed subject areas that are both analytical and spiritual, Vannatta is overcome by emotion and moved to tears. “What makes Maryknoll so special is the families—the love that we share and show our community,” she explains. “I’ve learned so much from my students and I’m still learning,” she continues. Whether solving mathematical equations or assigning religion projects that reflect the diversity of our modern world, her teachings are rooted in the love, respect, and kindness of her spiritual values. “It’s all an extension of how Jesus taught us to live—to be accepting and gracious of others,” she insists. It is clear that through her tireless commitment to student success, her mentorship of fellow educators, and her generosity of spirit as a woman of deep Catholic faith, Vannatta is a true reflection of the teachings that have guided her life. Fulfilling her destiny at Maryknoll was a full circle completion of the profound influence the Maryknoll Sisters and education had upon her, a gift which she has returned tenfold.

Sandy Yamane Family is the thread that connected Yamane to Maryknoll when she first stepped on campus 25 years ago. During a campus visit to explore Maryknoll as a potential option for her daughter, Jenna ’11, she was immediately drawn to what she describes as the aura of the school and believed it was a place where her children would be safe, happy, and nurtured.

Soon after that visit, she put down roots at Maryknoll, enrolling Jenna in Pre-K in 1987 and her son Travis ’06 in 5th grade the following year. Four years after her children had been warmly embraced into the community, Yamane joined the school faculty in 2002, where she remained for 20 years.

Lucille Kern Lucille Kern, who in her career served as a front office staff member at our high school and then at our grade school, retired after 37 years at Maryknoll School. Helping generations of students and teachers over the years, Mrs. Kern took great pride in her work, offering a reassuring voice and helping hand to all those she came across. “I liked being at Maryknoll helping the students and families – making a difference, hopefully, in their lives. School should be a happy and welcoming place to all, and I was blessed to be a part of their day.” She is enjoying retirement, especially the extra time to spend with family and her husband, Curtis, of 54 years. Mrs. Kern is the mother and grandmother of two generations of Maryknoll alumni: Lori Kern ’87 Carlos, Dori Kern ’87 Gabriel, Kristopher Kern ’98, Logan Carlos ’18, and Lexi Carlos ’20.

Yamane received her BEd in Early Childhood Education from the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa in 1980 and has worked in both the public and private sector for the past 42 years. Throughout her teaching career, she educated students in preschool, kindergarten, grades 1-3, as well as grade 6. She describes her experiences as a grade school teacher as particularly special as she gets to see the world through their eyes. “I find it especially rewarding to teach and nurture students in early childhood,” she says. “The children are innocent, full of wonder, and oh, so honest!

There is a lot of social-emotional nurturing and when we look back at the end of every year, we are always amazed at how far they’ve come and how much they’ve grown!” she explains. During her tenure at Maryknoll, Yamane served as a teaching assistant in grades K-2, as well as becoming the English co-teacher in the grade 1 Mandarin immersion program.

One of the most tender moments she recalls from the past two decades at Maryknoll has been the school tradition of honoring faculty members and their children by offering parents the privilege of presenting their graduating child with their high school diploma.

Such poignant acts of love are one of the many hallmark moments that have made Maryknoll her “home away from home.” For Yamane, Maryknoll is truly an extension of her heart and family—a place where she has been blessed to watch her children grow, where she has shared her heart with students, gained life-long friends, and deepened her faith. “God changes us every day as we become more in His likeness. I have seen many changes over the years and I like to think of it as a journey; an adventure filled with highs and lows that teach us valuable lessons every day, if we are willing to see with our hearts. But there is one thing that is unchanging and that is our Christian Catholic faith that is found at the heart of every one of us who shares a love for Maryknoll.”

David Yamasaki The value of music education cannot be understated, as its impact can be profound. For David Yamasaki, his life is an example and a testament to the life-changing power of music education. He discovered music in the fourth grade and was introduced to the violin by chance. “The music teacher called us up alphabetically, so by the time they called Yamasaki, the only instrument left was the violin,” he says with a laugh.

He enjoyed playing music throughout his formative years and expanded his musical prowess to the guitar as well, dedicating himself to practice and ultimately being accepted into a music program in high school. That experience proved to be transformative, allowing the young musician to perform at the likes of the Kennedy Center and the American Embassies in Paris, London, Germany, and Switzerland as the band toured Europe.

Colleen Yoda ’75 Liu Colleen attended Maryknoll from kindergarten through twelfth grade, graduating in 1975. She returned to her alma mater in 1989 as a fourthgrade teacher and in 2009 was promoted to fifth grade. She retired in August 2022. She says she won’t miss her 4:45 a.m. alarm but will cherish the special memories she shared with her students and their families, including lei making, limeade for the bake sale, angel buddies, humorous skit performances, Camp Erdman, the Scrabble tournament, and May Day performances. Colleen loved to challenge and push her students, taking pride in their transformation from tentative firstquarter students to confident and independent young ladies and gentlemen. She said that classroom management was never an issue as she always was one step ahead of them; students knew the force was with her … She was Yoda. Reflecting on her career, Colleen shares this quote: “It’s more important to teach students how to think, instead of what to think” (from the novel “There’s a Boy in the Girls’ Bathroom” by Louis Sachar).

Upon graduation Yamasaki studied ethnomusicology at the University of Washington and guitar at Berklee College of Music before taking a break from school to explore music professionally.

Though he had never considered teaching, he got a part-time job teaching guitar at San Quentin Maximum Security Prison and the experience opened his eyes to the power of music education. “The thing that struck me was that every guy that I spoke to would remark at how if they had only had music growing up, they probably wouldn’t have ended up in jail or involved in gangs and drugs…they probably would’ve played music,” he shares. He immediately applied for emergency credentials and went back to school to finish his degree. Yamasaki ultimately went on to earn a BA from California State University in classical guitar performance and an MA in composition. He taught in both public and private schools for nearly a decade in Northern California, where he witnessed firsthand the musical transformation he recalled from his youth.

He found his way to Maryknoll in 2003 when he and his wife moved to O‘ahu, an “aha” moment he explains, as the intuitive feeling that guided his decision. When he first began nearly two decades ago, Maryknoll only offered a middle school band. Over time, Yamasaki cultivated so much interest in his classes it required the high school to follow suit, developing its own band program to offer more students a place to hone their musical skills. Nearly twenty years later, Yamasaki has served as a fifth grade music teacher and the middle and high school band director, nurturing students’ interests in music and inspiring their creative spirit. He credits his tenure at Maryknoll to the guidance and leadership of President and Head of School, Shana Tong ’83, as well as the elation he feels watching his students be moved by music. “I’ll miss the kids the most,” he notes. “I’ll miss that connection, that moment when I get to hear them play or see something that sparks their interest in music. When that happens, it’s kind of a spiritual moment; it’s so fulfilling. That’s what makes it joyful. That’s what makes it so worthwhile.”

Three Decades of Service and Passion Mahalo and congratulations to Thomas “Chico” Furtado Since 1989, Thomas “Chico” Furtado served Maryknoll School students, families, and scholar-athletes as a school counselor, vice principal, and girls basketball head coach. After nearly 31 years of service, four ILH Girls Varsity Basketball championships, and countless memories, Mr. Furtado retired from Maryknoll in December 2021. He is grateful for all the ways the Maryknoll community enriched his life and the life of his ‘ohana. We caught up with Mr. Furtado to reflect upon his time at Maryknoll and what being a part of this special community means to him.

When did you begin your career at Maryknoll School?

I started working at Maryknoll in 1989 and was hired by Principal Andy Corcoran ’64 as a personal school counselor. If my math serves me right, this equates to about 31 years of service before retiring in December 2021.

During your time at Maryknoll, what roles did you serve?

I served as a school counselor for most of my career at the high school campus. In 2016, I was asked

by Maryknoll President Perry Martin to serve as Vice Principal of School Culture, which I gratefully accepted.

I served in this role for over five years, until my retirement in 2021.

What drew you to Maryknoll when you started your career?

Prior to joining Maryknoll in 1989, I worked for a Salvation Armybased residential treatment facility in Kaimuki for 10 years. Residential treatment was slowly being phased out in Hawai'i and I was looking for a role that aligned with my passion, skillset, and past experience. Maryknoll just happened to have an opening for a school counselor at the high school.

With this great timing, I applied, interviewed, and was hired. I didn’t know at the time that it would lead to 30+ years of service but I loved being a part of a small, Catholic community.

What was the most rewarding aspect of working at Maryknoll, both at the school level and athletic level?

There were many aspects of being at Maryknoll that were rewarding. As a counselor, I had the privilege of working directly with the students academically, socially, and emotionally. It allowed me to be a part of a very important time in a young person’s life. The faculty and staff were very welcoming and Mr.

Corcoran was an awesome principal.

Once I started coaching at Maryknoll, it was a dream come true. Combining my roles as a school counselor and coach allowed me to form deeper relationships with my players and their families; it was very rewarding.

The support I received from the faculty, staff, families, players, students, alumni, and administration was amazing.

What was it like having your children and grandchildren attend Maryknoll?

Having my daughters and grandchildren at Maryknoll was great. I was able to watch over them and keep them grounded. My oldest daughter Elisa ’97 graduated from Maryknoll and my other daughter Nicole attended Maryknoll until the 8th grade before transferring to Kalaheo. At the time, she really wanted to play basketball for me when I was coaching at Kalaheo, as Maryknoll was not quite the fit for her.

I had two grandchildren, Brooklyn ’18 and Noah ’21, graduate from Maryknoll. My other grandson AJ attended Maryknoll for a year before transferring to Roosevelt and my youngest granddaughter may attend Maryknoll in the future. I am very proud of all of their accomplishments.

They all learned a lot at Maryknoll in their own unique way.

What was your most memorable moment during your time as Girls Varsity Basketball Head Coach?

My most memorable moment was winning our first ILH championship when we beat Punahou at home. The gym was rocking! We fell behind early but the girls kept battling back and pulled it off at the end. This first championship will always be very special to me.

Can you describe the process you went through building your teams over the years?

Building a successful program involves planning and patience.

There are many variables. Dedicated student-athletes, committed coaches, administrative support, and schoolwide involvement all played a major role in our success. I can honestly say that the alignment of all of these variables made it easy for me to build and sustain our success at Maryknoll.

What words of advice do you have for future Lady Spartans, hoping to join Maryknoll and the school’s Girls Basketball Program?

My advice to any student-athlete wanting to be a Lady Spartan is to start with a strong passion and work ethic. Nothing is accomplished without hard work.

What’s next for you as you enter retirement from Maryknoll?

My retirement thus far has been fairly uneventful. I’m just relaxing, helping take care of my parents, and trying to stay busy. I’m still pretty connected with athletics and continuing to coordinate the girls basketball program. I’m not ready to walk away from coaching just yet.

Do you have any parting words for the hundreds of fans, supporters, alumni students, and players you’ve encountered and met during your time at Maryknoll?

I just want to thank Maryknoll for allowing me to be part of their wonderful school community. I have made lifelong friends and I will always be grateful for my time there. Too many people to thank but rest assured that I will always cherish our time together.

The 2021-2022 school year welcomed back the annual Spartan Run as an in-person event for our K-8 students! The grade and middle school campus was excited to provide an opportunity for our young Spartans to get active together outdoors and work together towards a collective goal – with our students and families raising nearly $25,000 for Maryknoll.

Emily Baptiste ’53 and her family were recently recognized with the Noblesse Oblige award at the Noblesse Oblige Award & Scholarship dinner on May 21, 2022. Her classmates from the Class of 1953 came out to support her.

CLASS OF 1961 C Claudia Santiago Elliott Chamizo ’61 shares news that classmate Claudia Santiago ’61 (Sister Joeline Santiago, SSS) celebrated 50 years of commitment as a Sister of Social Services in a ceremony on Pentecost Sunday, June 5, 2022 at Holy Spirit Retreat Chapel in Encino, CA.

Donna Omura ’70 Fukuda, affectionately known as MaDonna to her five grandchildren, celebrated her 70th birthday. She and her graduating Class of 1970 celebrated their 50th class reunion, two years removed. She was the first of six siblings to finish at Maryknoll.

The tradition continued with her two daughters Dana Fukuda ’98 Rauckhorst and Denby Fukuda ’99 Rall and her sonin-law Aaron Rauckhorst ’98. This fall, all of her grandchildren will be following in MaDonna’s footsteps at Maryknoll: Dason Rauckhorst ’31 Aleia Rauckhorst ’33, Donn, Dax, and Drake Rall ’35.

CLASS OF 1971 E Darlene Metter After graduating from the University of Hawai‘i in 1974 and John A. Burns School of Medicine in 1978, Darlene Fong ’71 Metter moved to San Antonio, TX, where she still resides, and completed residencies in Family Practice, Radiology, and a Fellowship in Nuclear Medicine. She is a tenured professor at UT Health San Antonio, Radiology where she is currently practicing ER Radiology and Nuclear Medicine. She chairs the Nuclear Regulatory Commission Advisory Committee on the Medical Uses of Isotopes, an advisory group accountable to the U.S. Congress, and is a member of the Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging (SNMMI) Board of Directors and the current SNMMI Speaker of the House of Delegates. In addition, Darlene is a member of the Texas Radiation Advisory Board and serves on several UT institutional committees. She has been married to a pathologist for 42 years, has three sons (two of whom are pathologists), one grandchild, and eight longhorn cows, and loves to volunteer in her local community.

G Nadine Luke Cho Nadine Luke ’79 Cho retired on April 1, 2022. Taking early retirement, she traveled to Las Vegas, Los Angeles to see the Earth Wind and Fire concert, San Diego for the UCSD graduation, and Virginia to drive up to New York for camping with the Girl Scouts and even got to visit the pandas at the Washington DC Zoo. During a twelvehour layover, she saw “The Bean” aka Cloud Gate in Chicago. She is now in the process of selling her house in Kāne‘ohe and will be moving back to Honolulu soon.

Cielo Almanza ’92 was recently named Commander of the Defense Logistics Agency in San Diego, California.

Almanza’s personal decorations include the Legion of Merit, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medals, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medals, as well as various unit and service awards.

He is also the first Navy recipient of the General William G.T. Tuttle Award for Business Acumen in Defense and Government. He is joint qualified and a member of the Defense Acquisition Corps.

Erin Kirihara ’02 was recently named Executive Vice President for Rider Levett Bucknall, a professional construction consulting firm based in Honolulu.

Kirihara made a name for herself in the male-dominated construction industry, working her way up from Project Administrator to Vice President. As the first female and one of the youngest VPs in the history of Rider Levett Bucknall, Kirihara oversees the success of clients with construction projects ranging from $1 million to $800 million in Hawai‘i and the US mainland, building a portfolio that exceeds $3 billion in project value throughout her 18-year career with the firm.

CLASS OF 2016 Q Kaleolani Ogura Kaleolani Ogura ’16 is currently enrolled as a second-year graduate student at University of California, Irvine, studying to receive his PhD in inorganic chemistry.

CLASS OF 2017 R Jian “MJ” Mao MJ Mao ’17 celebrated one year in his role as the Global Programs Coordinator at La Salle College Preparatory in Pasadena, California. His responsibilities include international recruitment, exchange and travel programs, and community engagement and fundraising. Prior to starting his professional journey in California, MJ earned his Bachelor’s degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, majoring in Education Policy Studies with a minor in International Studies.

He was also a scholarship studentathlete. As a member of the Wisconsin Varsity Swim team, he was a school record holder and a finalist in the BIG Championships and the NCAA Division I Championships. MJ earned his AllAmerican honors in 2019.

Austin Chun ’21 just wrapped up his first year at University of California, Irvine where he reached junior standing thanks to Maryknoll’s dual degree program with Hawai‘i Pacific University.

He was recently selected to attend Army Airborne School at Fort Bennington, Georgia and began training in August.

Returning home from playing college volleyball at Fresno Pacific University, Chantel Montayre ’18 is currently pursuing a degree at Hawai‘i’s first and only Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) Program at Hawai‘i Pacific University.

CLASS OF 2021 T Charla Teves Governor David Ige signed a proclamation to raise awareness about gun violence prevention. Charla Teves ’21 (holding orange sign) represented Students Demand Action for Gun Sense in America. Following the signing, Charla participated in a rally at the US Capitol with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, along with hundreds of students from around the country to pass gun safety legislation.

U Matthew Chun Matthew Chun ’21 had a busy summer this year after landing two internshipsone with RLI Insurance in their underwriting department and the other with Servpac Inc. Matthew is a member of Marist College’s Honors Program and is double majoring in Accounting and Business Administration with a concentration in Finance.
