Two Welcome Visitors

S

ome people do their best work with an iPod dangling from their neck and music blaring into their ears.

Others need to work in monastic silence.

And others prefer to create with classical pieces playing softly in the background.

I do my best work to the sounds of huge construction vehicles going in reverse and to the cacophony of jackhammers, bulldozers, pile drivers, and cement trucks. So you can (L to R) Darryll D.M. Construction brings a host of visitors with it. In addition to a small army of construction workers, the work-site is crawling with architects, inspectors, supervisors, and on-lookers.

These are all welcome visitors, because they mean that we are getting closer to bringing a long-awaited dream into reality.

EDITOR’S CORNER

N

early 25 years ago, Elliott Chamizo ’61 was the advisor when I was a senior at Maryknoll and the editor of the Chi Rho Knoller, the school newspaper. That experience prompted me to choose to major in journalism in college, with an emphasis in magazines.

Eight years ago, Elliott Chamizo called and said, “There’s a job opening up in the Office of Development, working on the alumni magazine. Are you interested in applying?”

A job at Maryknoll? In my college major? My mother was beside herself.

Lured into the position as the editor of the Knoller, I found myself with a career in fundraising communications. Ironically, the one thing I came aboard to do – produce a magazine – has spent the most time on the back burner as I found myself more involved in events, grant writing, PR and community relations.

I have been mostly on the periphery of the actual asking for money – a delicate, often difficult thing to do. The delightful surprise, time and again, is that people do respond to the call. Many are people who love Maryknoll, like my fellow alumni. But many are generous donors who would otherwise have no connection to us except that someone who already loves Maryknoll asked them to give.

Raising money takes a tremendous amount of energy and fortitude.

The office is always a-buzz with an event, a mailing, a meeting. Then again, I don’t know anyone at Maryknoll who isn’t busy. There’s always more work to do than hours in the day to do it. That’s par for the course for people who are constantly envisioning what more Maryknoll can be. Greatness is a moving target.

This can be overwhelming. So on the days when it felt like I was moving backward in slow motion rather than making forward progress, there was only one question to ask myself: “Is what I’m doing today making Maryknoll a better a place?”

Thankfully, the answer was always, “Yes.” Just as greatness is a moving target, so is life. Things change.

For me, change has come in the form of a new opportunity in which to serve my alma mater – as the assistant to the new President of Maryknoll School when he came aboard this past summer. Perry Martin is a servant-leader who deeply honors what Maryknoll was

founded to be and has made a commitment to moving Maryknoll forward to what it can become. I’m grateful for the opportunity to work with him.

Thank you to Yvonne Usita Morris ’63, Director of Development, for having made me a part of your team. You have so much heart for Maryknoll and it shows every day in your commitment to your work. Thanks also to the colleagues I’ve had the pleasure of working with daily over the years: Lori Kern Carlos ’87, Naomi Saito, Angie Golis-Yamamoto, Elaine Batacan, Mara Ishida Saito ’84, Lloree Gamiao, Eve Yeung ’94. I will always be proud of the work that we accomplished together and I’m grateful for all that you continue to do for Maryknoll.

As always, my deepest gratitude is to my Dad in heaven, Paul Domaloan ’55, a boy from the Big Island who said yes when Fr. Jackson asked, “Would you like to go to Maryknoll?” Because of that, my life has been infused with the obligation to give back, with friends for a lifetime, and an education that has allowed me the luxury of choosing my path. I’m glad to have made my way home again to Maryknoll where I have the means to gift my own children with the same opportunity.

It means a lot – everything, really – that my children’s Maryknoll experience is destined to be even better than my own. It’s a blessing that such a thing is possible.

I don’t just hope that Maryknoll keeps getting better every year – I am working hard every day to make sure that it does. If you cherish Maryknoll the way I do, rest assured that there are many others doing the same.

The beauty is that those same people are also working to ensure that Maryknoll stays the same – true to its mission and to the spirit of the Maryknoll Sisters who stepped out in faith more than 80 years ago.

It has been my privilege to share a few chapters of the Maryknoll story, and a little of my own, with you over the last eight years. Many thanks for listening.

Maryknoll School Honoring the past Celebrating the present Building the future ~ 80th Anniversary Motto ~ Six Maryknoll Sisters welcoming the first students to classes in a one-story wooden building is the simple, but significant beginning of Maryknoll School. Eighty-one years later, the school is home to nearly 1,400 students in grades pre-K to 12, taught by 110 teachers. The facilities span two campuses totaling 4.6 acres. From humble beginnings, Maryknoll has grown to become one of the largest independent schools on Oahu, and remains the island’s only co-ed Catholic school from grades pre-K through 12.

adventurous 20th century women trained in working international missions – fostered the charism to serve the children in the territory of Hawaii.

“The Maryknoll Sisters had great dreams of serving the AsianPacific part of the world,” said Sr. Dolores Rosso, a Maryknoll Sister, former teacher and honorary alum. “They brought that spirit with them.”

The Maryknoll Sisters’ dedication to serving others is embodied in the school’s motto of Noblesse Oblige, meaning “to whom much is given, much is expected.” The Sisters’ outreach activities had broad impact through their leadership and participation in civic and community activities, such as organizing Hawaii’s first Catholic Girl Scout Troop, and teaching at a Waimanalo detention home.

The example the Sisters set continues today at Maryknoll.

Service to others is integrated into Maryknoll’s educational philosophy and curriculum, and is reflected in the school’s mission: to educate young people in Hawaii and prepare them to make lasting contributions to society.

From the beginning, Maryknoll was envisioned by Bishop Stephen Alencastre to be different from the traditional Europeanmodeled schools already established in Hawaii. He wanted a school that educated not only Catholic students, but also welcomed all students regardless of ethnicity, religion or socio-economic background.

The Bishop invited the Maryknoll Sisters, a young mission just seven years old, to realize this vision. With Hawaii’s multi-ethnic population, the Bishop knew that these American Sisters – young,

The unique spirit of the Maryknoll Sisters was also reflected in the professionalism they brought to the mission field. Many of the women who joined the order were professionals in their fields before taking their vows. Thus, a commitment to teaching excellence has been a part of a Maryknoll education since the first day the school opened its doors.

Some of the order’s best educators were sent to Hawaii, recalls Sr. Dolores. Their spirited energies and dedication to mission became focused on “being professional teachers.” Following the lead of Maryknoll Sisters’ founder-Mother Mary Joseph Rogers who promoted teacher-training more and more Sisters obtained teaching degrees to prepare them for their school assignments.

By the 1930s, the Sisters also initiated local educational conferences to improve their teaching skills. These conferences were open to all Maryknoll Sisters teaching in Hawaii and featured guest speakers and presenters from the University of Hawaii. Many Sisters held membership and leadership positions in professional education organizations. For example, as a member of the Hawaii Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) planning committee, Sr. Dolores helped plan local speech tournaments and conventions.

Today, Maryknoll School continues to emphasize professional training and dedicates significant resources to faculty development with annual attendance at local and national conferences.

NEW HORIZONS The mission of the Maryknoll Sisters was always to establish new endeavors, train others and move on. Nothing displays that greater than the fact that the Sisters helped the school transition to lay leadership as they would depart.

In 1977, Jared Kaufmann ’58 became the high school’s first lay principal. Four years later, James Gahler became the grade school’s first lay principal.

In 1997, Father Frank Diffley and the Maryknoll Fathers bid aloha to Sacred Heart Parish. For the first time in our history, the school’s leadership was turned over to a lay President, Michael E. Baker.

The transition to a faculty and staff comprised entirely of lay people was completed in 2006 with the retirement of Sr. Maria Rosario Daley, assistant in the college guidance office, and Sr. Marie Patrice Kehoe, the school nurse. Sr. Rosario continues to live with the Maryknoll Sisters in Manoa. Sr. Marie Patrice retired to the Maryknoll Sisters residence in Ossining, NY. It is in the hands and hearts of today’s faculty and staff that the spirit and mission of the Maryknoll Sisters live on.

FEATURE STORY CLASSROOM TO COMMUNITY “The presence of the Sisters’ positive influence continues through the many alumni who returned to teach,” says James Gahler.

Grade School Principal Shana Campos Tong ‘83 was a Maryknoll student, returned as a teacher, and is now sending her two children, ages 7 and 11, to her alma mater.

“I got a good foundation as a person from the school’s traditional Catholic values and I want the same for my children - to be part of this culture of knowledge, community and service,” says Shana.

“My experience as a student is also an example of Maryknoll’s contemporary approach where every child is seen as an individual and given opportunities to prepare for the real and ever-changing world,” she said. “I became a teacher because I remember the compassionate and caring teachers I had that I wanted to emulate.”

Shana is part of an extended three-generation alumni family and a beloved Maryknoll family tradition. Her grandmother was the cook for the Maryknoll priests. Her grandfather built the pews at Sacred Heart Church. And her mother, Shirley Campos, served 33 years as secretary to the grade school principal.

Beginning as a second grade teacher in 1988, Shana saw her career grow as a teacher and grade school vice principal before her selection as principal in Fall 2008. She is one of 34 Maryknoll alumni currently on staff at the school. In the tradition of the Maryknoll Sisters who pursued excellence as educators, Shana pursued an advanced degree, encouraged and supported by school administration. In May 2008, she became one of four Maryknoll staff members in the inaugural class of 10 graduates receiving Chaminade University’s first master’s degree in Catholic Educational Leadership.

Alumni aren’t the only ones carrying on the tradition. Under President Baker, Maryknoll made significant facilities improvements to both campuses, developed an impressive technology

program, met and exceeded annual giving goals, and tripled its endowment. His tenure was distinguished by the launching of “The Time is Now,” our school’s first ever capital campaign to raise $12 million for the Maryknoll School Community Center.

“As a Diocesan Catholic institution, Maryknoll is committed to a quality education that develops the whole child,” said Baker.

“Academically, physically, artistically, spiritually and morally, to become a learned individual of integrity and personal responsibility.”

“We see scholastic achievement and personal development as equally respected values,” he adds.

Maryknoll’s “Habits of the Mind, Heart and Community” aim to prepare students to be creative thinkers and problem solvers, to practice high moral values, and to contribute to improving the community. They are based on our long commitment to religious, moral and ethical principles.

In 2008, Baker stepped down after ten years as president. In July, Perry K. Martin, former principal of Marist Catholic High School in Eugene, Oregon, assumed the responsibility of moving Maryknoll forward to an even brighter future.

To honor the Sisters who began it all, it is befitting that Maryknoll’s special graduation ritual upholds a tradition brought by the first Sisters that has gone on to Maryknoll schools worldwide.

Outgoing seniors pass lighted candles to the next year’s incoming senior class members, who in turn give a lei to each departing graduate. The tradition of one lit candle being passed to another symbolizes “Nobleness enkindleth Nobleness” to ensure that the legacy lives on.

In 2007, 80-year-old Brother Venard Ruane, fondly called “the campus memory,” retired as the last of nine Maryknoll Brothers who have served in Hawaii over the last 50 years. Br. Venard worked at Maryknoll for nearly 20 years, as catechism teacher, Boy Scout leader, bus driver and the school’s first athletic director. Br. Venard now lives in the Maryknoll retirement residence in Los Altos, CA.

The Monsignor Charles A. Kekumano Scholarship & Award Dinner Hilton Hawaiian Village April 9, 2006

T

he Monsignor Charles A. Kekumano Scholarship & Award Dinner raises funds for the Kekumano Scholarship Fund and in the last few years, has also benefited the capital campaign to build the Maryknoll School Community Center. The annual dinner has become a premier event for Maryknoll School raising more than $1,000,000 since it was first held in 1998.

The honoree at the first dinner, Monsignor Charles A. Kekumano, was recognized for his selfless contributions to community. In memory of the Monsignor, the Noblesse Oblige Award for Service is awarded annually to those who devote their talent to the service of others and who give both example and meaning to Maryknoll’s motto, Noblesse Oblige – “to whom much is given, much is expected.”

Past recipients of the Noblesse Oblige Award for Service include Dr. Livingston Wong ’48, Jim Gahler, Irmgard Farden Aluli, Cha and Jack Thompson, Nina Keali’iwahamana Rodrigues Rapozo ’54, Dr. Jorge Camara and Governor George Ariyoshi.

Kekumano Scholars The Monsignor Charles A. Kekumano Scholarship is awarded annually to a returning Maryknoll student entering their junior or senior year who demonstrates excellence both inside and outside the classroom.

2006 Kekumano Scholar – Jason Leong-Yep ’07 High school faculty members selected Leong-Yep as the Kekumano Scholar for centering his young life on the principle of “Noblesse Oblige,” the school’s service-first motto. Jason’s volunteer work included campus ministry at the high school and spiritual retreat ministry at the grade school. He was also an example to his peers on stage and on the soccer field, performing with the school’s theater group, and refereeing and playing youth soccer for a number of years. Jason was named the 2006 Young Male Referee (Oahu) by the American Youth Soccer Organization (AYSO). Jason is the son of Deborah Leong-Yep.

GABRIEL MA, M.D., F.A.C.S. 2006 NOBLESSE OBLIGE AWARD FOR SERVICE Orthopedic surgeon Dr. Gabriel Wai Chiu Ma has been a distinguished member of the Hawaii’s medical field for more than 40 years.

Starting his Hawaii practice in 1965, Dr. Ma became Hawaii’s first Chinese board certified orthopedic surgeon in 1967. Deliberately choosing difficult cases, he thrived in a demanding career. Among his innovations was the Posterior Lumber Interbody Fusion, a technique for repairing injured spines. His medical triumph, however, is the “Ma procedure” for the Percutaneous Repair of Acute Closed Ruptured Achilles Tendon; stunning in its simplicity, and the only surgical procedure to be invented in Hawaii. His techniques have been used worldwide to bring relief to tens of thousands of patients.

Now retired, Dr. Ma continues to enrich the community, particularly in the area of education. Over the past 12 years, Dr. Ma has turned much of his energies to Maryknoll School, which his two sons and three grandchildren attended. He has served on the school board, on its development committee, and has labored long and hard to realize the building of the all-purpose community center. In memory of his parents, he has donated a lecture room that will bear their names.

Dr. Ma and his wife Frances have two married sons and five grandchildren.

he annual jubilarian celebration honors classes who've graduated from Maryknoll 50 years ago or more. Alumni are invited to attend Baccalaureate Mass and a buffet luncheon hosted by Maryknoll School President Michael Baker. At the commencement exercises the following evening, alumni enjoy reserved seating and special recognition.

Alumni Week Class Dinner 7th Annual Alumni Week Class Dinner Renaissance Ilikai Waikiki Hotel July 15, 2006

T

he culminating activity of Alumni Week is the Class Dinner, held on the third Saturday of July. This event is a gathering of alumni, current and former faculty members, and guests, and includes a buffet dinner and live Hawaiian music. At the Class Dinner, the winner of the “President’s Cup” is announced. This recognition is given to the reunion class with the greatest increase in percentage of classmates making gifts to the school’s annual fund.

The highlight of the evening is the presentation of the Alumni Achievement Awards. The Alumni Achievement Award is given for notable accomplishments in service to others, attained in the spirit of the Maryknoll School motto, Noblesse Oblige (“to whom much is given, much is expected”). The first Alumni Achievement Award was presented in 1973 to Dr. Livingston Wong ’48, a pioneer of kidney and bone marrow transplants in Hawaii. For the next six years, the award was presented annually to an alumnus who perpetuated the spirit of Maryknoll. The award was reinstated in 2000 at Maryknoll School’s first annual Alumni Week social event, and was coordinated by the school’s Alumni Association. Since then, awardees have included Tony Sellitto, Sr. Dolores Rosso, Nina Rodrigues Rapozo ’54, Karen Nakagaki Nakamura ’62, Lucile Smith Mistysyn ’37, Jared Kaufmann ’58, Andrew Corcoran ’64, Fr. Debbie Nakanelua-Richards has served the community with grace and graciousness for many years. She is nearly synonymous with Hawaiian Airlines, having spent the last 28 years in various capacities within the Sales & Marketing Department. She has managed their government and community relations since 1992, and in 2004, was named the Hawaiian Airlines Employee of the Year, the company’s highest honor.

Throughout her years associated with the airline, Debbie has organized volunteer participation in community events including the Merrie Monarch Festival, Great Aloha Run, Hawaii Farm Fair, Honolulu Marathon, Manoa Valley Theatre, University of Hawaii Athletics, Kamehameha Day Parade, and the Aloha Festivals Parade.

Independently of her work with Hawaiian Airlines, Debbie has served as volunteer and board member with the Aloha Festivals, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, Friends of the Honolulu City Lights, St. Andrew’s Cathedral Bishop’s Chapter, and the Honolulu Theatre for Youth.

She is a member of the Daughters of Hawaii, Iolani Guild, and Travel Women of Hawaii. She is a professional model and has worked in television, print, fashion and radio. In 2004, she was the pa’u queen in the King Kamehameha Parade. She also served our island community in a special way as Miss Hawaii 1984, and was a top-ten semifinalist at the Miss America Pageant.

A strong proponent of the perpetuation of Hawaiian culture, Debbie is a graduate hula student of Halau Hula O Maiki, and regularly dances hula at the Halekulani Hotel. She continues to perform professionally throughout Europe, Asia, the South Pacific, Canada, the Caribbean, and Mexico, as well as the United States. She is also a student and teacher at Pa Ku’i A Holo School of Hawaiian Fighting Arts.

Debbie and her husband Billy have a daughter, Mahina.

Alumni Achievement Awards PAUL DE VILLE ’66 2006 ALUMNI ACHIEVEMENT AWARD Paul de Ville has been blessed, not merely with corporate success, but more importantly with the heart to serve others as a leader in the community.

He is currently pursuing commercial real estate ventures and was most recently the president and CEO of Hilo Hattie. Prior to entering the retail business, Paul was president and chief operating officer of Persis Corporation, which owned the Honolulu Advertiser and a small chain of papers on the mainland. After selling the publishing business in 1991, he moved Persis into the commercial real estate business. By early 2001, he completed the sale of the commercial real estate assets of Persis, and started at Hilo Hattie.

Always very involved in the community, Paul was a member and then chair of the Maryknoll School Board of Trustees, and has served as a member of a number of nonprofit boards, including the March of Dimes Board of Directors. He started the first Hilo Hattie Annual Charity

Paul lives in Honolulu with his wife Rebecca, and has three children (Tricia, Melany and Landon), two sons-in-law, and three grandsons (Evan, Caleb and Joshua).

LAURIE HONG WONG ’56 2006 ALUMNI ACHIEVEMENT AWARD Laurie Hong Wong entered Maryknoll in third grade and graduated with the Class of 1956. She went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts in English from UC Berkeley and a professional teaching certificate from the University of Hawaii at Manoa.

Laurie was an elementary school teacher in California and in Hawaii for five years until her marriage to Al Wong, who is currently the Chair of the Maryknoll School Board of Trustees. She and Al have a son, Peter and a daughter, Julie. Peter and wife Yoona have blessed them with a grandson named Jackson; Julie has blessed them with two grandchildren, Makayla and Erik While being a devoted mom and grandmother, education has remained Laurie’s passion. She was a volunteer at Liliuokalani Elementary School as a reading tutor, and was a religious education teacher at Star of the Sea Parish, where she also served as a member of the Pastoral Council. She is currently employed as the coordinator of federally funded reading grants mandated by “No Child Left Behind,” and as the reading coach at Ala Wai Elementary School.

Besides being an educator, Laurie is also an entrepreneur. She opened, and for 18 years owned and operated, “The Paperie,” a gifts and stationery store in Kahala Mall.

In serving others, she devotes her time and energy to activities about which she is passionate. One of them is her Catholic faith, so she volunteers at Catholic Charities with the Island Treasures event.

Fortunately for Maryknoll School, one of Laurie’s passions is also her alma mater and the children it serves. She began by volunteering at the high school wherever she was needed. Her involve-

ment grew and she served as a board member for six years, and currently serves on the Development Committee. She was a member of the committee that established the first Kekumano Scholarship Dinner. She has continued to dedicate a significant amount of time in support of this event, which has now raised more than $1 million for the Kekumano Scholarship Fund.

When graduating from Maryknoll, Laurie was surprised to discover that she had been awarded the Maryknoll Cup, which is the highest award a senior can receive. She says that the award said “Noblesse Oblige” on it, but confessed that she didn’t really know what it meant at the time. She recently said, “Now I really know what it means.”

ahalo to all our alumni who come home to the high school campus for Career Day. On Career Day, former students become the teachers as they share their experiences and career advice with small groups of Maryknoll’s freshmen and sophomores.

The event began with an assembly that featured a fashion show by Tamar Hassing ’95, a clothing designer for the Kahala line of aloha attire and Local Motion sportswear. Maryknoll students modeled Tamar’s current designs, arriving in early morning darkness to have their hair and makeup done for the show, thanks to the generosity and artistry of stylist Kathy Ching Viniegas ’88 who runs her own salon on Kalakaua Avenue. To add to the excitement, the pre-show preparation was featured on the KHON morning television show, with reporter Trini Kaopuiki doing interview segments with Tamar and then-alumni coordinator Lori Kern Carlos ’87, and also broadcasting the weather live from the high school campus.

A

s seniors enter the home stretch of their final year at Maryknoll, they gather for a dinner marking 100 days until graduation.

Sponsored by the Office of the President, the 100 Days Dinner features alumni speakers who share their wisdom and well-wishes with the senior class. The year’s newest class of jubilarians – alumni celebrating 50 years since graduating high school – is also invited to attend.

This year, a new highlight was introduced to the program - the awarding of the first Maryknoll School Alumni Association Scholarship. This scholarship was established in memory of Karen Chinen, a loving friend of Maryknoll. It’s awarded to an exceptional graduating senior for the purpose of pursuing higher education or training.

Alumnus Profile When Aaron Wong ’02 graduated from USC in 2006, he was featured in the USC Viterbi School of Engineering newsletter (May 12, 2006). Reprinted with permission.

Nothing But A's for Salutatorian and New BSBME Graduate Aaron Wong If your name is Jack or Fran Wong of Honolulu, you can stop reading right now.

For the rest of you, the news is that their son Aaron Wong has been named a salutatorian for USC's 2006 Commencement, and he hasn’t told them yet.

Wong, a biomedical/electrical engineering major with a minor in medical anthropology, decided it would be fun to surprise his parents with the news.

“I’m going to wait until the baccalaureate dinner tonight and tell them on the way over,” he said, laughing.

Wong earned straight A’s all the way through his undergraduate studies in biomedical engineering. During that time, he became interested in neural engineering and psychophysics.

“My lab work was one of the high points of my undergraduate work,” he said. A year ago, he became particularly interested in vision and began work in the Visual Processing Lab under Norberto Grzywacz and Monica Padilla. His most recent project, an interdisciplinary look at how culture affects perception, involved history professor Lisa Bitel, who is studying religious visions through history.

Wong will be entering the Ph.D. program in biomedical engineering at Johns Hopkins University in the fall, but hopes to spend the summer doing a lab rotation at the Baltimore institution.

In past summers, he has been a laboratory assistant at the National Institutes of Health and an engineering intern at Siimpel Corp. in Arcadia, where he programmed control software. Eventually, he

would like to teach in academia and conduct research.

Wong chose USC because he was allowed to declare himself a double major in biomedical and electrical engineering when he first entered, plus he was offered a merit research scholarship to conduct research right off the bat. While here, he’s held down two jobs. In addition to the research work, he’s been a tutor in Student Affairs in Tutor Hall.

That rigorous load hasn’t prevented the 22-year-old from earning straight A’s. Nor did it impact his performance at Maryknoll High School in Hawaii before college.

Only once did he admit he ever had any trouble with a class. That was during his freshman year, with a pesky GE class in geography, in which he earned an A-minus.

“It wasn’t really my area of interest,” Wong said, diplomatically.

On Raising Lifelong Learners

by Fran Chow Wong ’69 Fran Wong, 7th grade teacher at Maryknoll School, is the mother of Anne ’97, an 8th grade teacher at Maryknoll and Aaron ’02. Upon learning that Aaron was named salutatorian when he earned his bachelor’s degree in engineering from the University of Southern California, the Knoller asked Fran to share her thoughts about being “Mom” in this extraordinary family. We are happy she agreed.

“I just don’t think I’m cut out to be a mom,” I expressed to my husband Jack. “What would I do with a baby?”

As a newlywed, I didn’t want kids. It was a total lack of confidence in child rearing skills. My patient husband waited for two years and then decided it was time to start a family. He wanted ten rollicking kids! Or at least six for a basketball team. I reluctantly agreed to have one. That’s how Anne came along; five years later, Aaron.

From the beginning, it was a “learn as you go” process, however, very early on I zeroed in on my primary goal: both my children would love to read – voraciously and be able to write fluently.

Personal past experiences underscored the importance of these two skills, vital to academic success in school, across all curriculum demands, from pre-K to college, and would serve my children well throughout their professional careers. Having set my sights, the campaign commenced about a month after they were born.

First, we’d have no television in the house. Cable salesmen would frequent my door asking me to subscribe. Finally one day, I blurted, “We don’t have a TV.” The vendor’s eyes widened in shock, his jaw visibly dropped, and his pitch came to a grinding halt. Incredulous, he stammered, “What do you do?” continued on next page 2006 - 2007

I know I mumbled something, but I could have shared more. We filled the time with reading, making up stories, writing stories, and conversation. We played board games, cards, and built Legos. We cooked together, did arts and crafts, sewed, and worked around the house. We explored aircraft open houses, tide pools, the zoo, flew kites in the park, fished, and camped. The time sped by and we never gave television-watching a serious thought.

And so it was with Gameboys, Playstation, the latest electronic toys, computer games – my kids had none of them. Just to set the record straight, we finally did succumb to normalcy somewhere along the line, and today, we do have a flat screen TV. But on any given night you could come to our house and see everyone in the family absorbed in reading.

Secondly, while I was forging a strong literacy background (to which my husband readily contributed), Jack’s real input was to teach our children the importance of involvement and volunteerism. With his urging, the kids participated in many different arenas that built their life experiences, skills, and made them well-rounded, service-oriented citizens.

As the children grew, Jack was there: 5th grade camp, dance chaperon, huli-ing the chicken, making punch for the luau, parking cars for various school events, a speech judge, church clean-ups for our parish, course marshal for cross-country, scout projects – and the kids were there right alongside him. Further, both of our children learned that they had to finish what they started and to produce their best at whatever they had their hands in. It was a good thing that they had grown into avid readers and quick writers because time, always a valuable commodity, was now judiciously split between academics and extracurricular activities.

Thirdly, was our initial decision to send our children to Maryknoll.

They were nurtured in an environment that fostered academic success and provided the opportunities for them to grow. Both my children chose to remain at Maryknoll even though they were given the option of applying elsewhere at the end of their 8th grade year. They didn’t want to move. Because of the small school setting, they could become involved in whatever activity they wanted: they didn’t have to compete for limited slots on the cross-country team or math team or hula halau.

They just signed up, and they were in.

Along the way, teachers would recognize Anne’s talents in writing and steered her into essay contests, The Toad, or editor of the school paper. In the case of Aaron, faculty became quickly aware of his math and science strengths and went out of their way to provide him opportunities to showcase and challenge his abilities. I am not sure if these fortuitous doors would have opened for my children if they had been enrolled in larger schools. For this, my husband and I are grateful to the Maryknoll teachers.

Today as young adults, Anne and Aaron continue to be lifelong learners, whether through text or a hands-on event. My son, who has received a graduate fellowship, seeks his doctorate from Johns Hopkins. He hopes to remain in the world of academia through research and teaching. My daughter, who has established herself as an educator, holds a Masters in Education and is currently in grad school for yet another degree.

As parents, Jack and I couldn’t be happier for their accomplishments and successes. Twenty-eight years ago, when I expressed my preference not to have kids, my insightful husband didn’t listen to me.

Good thing!

lumni coordinators from Hawaii’s independent schools held the first All-Hawaii Alumni Connection in Washington, D.C. in January 2004. Since then, similar gatherings have taken place in San Diego, Chicago and Philadelphia to coincide with the location of the annual CASE/NAIS conference.

These brunch events have been fun-filled gatherings of alumni from Maryknoll, Hawaii Baptist Academy, Chaminade University, Kamehameha Schools, Punahou School, Sacred Hearts Academy –

Time is set aside for the alumni coordinators from each school to update their graduates on the latest campus news. The event ends with everyone joining together to sing “Hawaii Aloha.”

Regional Gatherings in the Pacific Northwest SEATTLE, WASHINGTON October 21, 2006 Maryknoll came to the Emerald City when school staff members and volunteer Lucile Mistysyn Smith ’37 arrived in Seattle for a regional reunion.

The lunchtime gathering took place in Bellevue at the beautiful home of Donna Chow Lee ’81 and her husband Andy. Attending from Maryknoll School were School President Michael Baker, Director of Development Yvonne Usita Morris ’63, then Alumni Relations Coordinator Mara Ishida Saito ’84 and Athletics Director Pattie Wong Heatherly ’66. They shared news about the improvements that have been made to facilities and the curriculum during Maryknoll’s recent history, including air-conditioned classrooms and the laptop program at the high school, as well as the current plans for constructing the Maryknoll School Community Center. Then everyone enjoyed the delicious taco bar for lunch and had a wonderful time catching up with each other.

Mahalo to Malcolm Chang ’66 for serving as the event’s unofficial photographer and taking loads of pictures.

Garrick Dung ’66 had a great time visiting with everyone at the gathering after a 5 hour (one-way) ride from Spokane on his Harley Davidson.

In attending the gathering, Linda Saiki Miyauchi ’77 discovered she lives just down the street from Donna Lee. Linda is a substitute teacher for the Bellevue School District. Her oldest daughter Kalene is a junior at the University of Washington. Daughter Michele is a senior at Newport High and son Steven is a freshman. Her husband Dale maintains a practice at Totem Lake Family Medicine.

Alice Wong Chun ’81 and husband Brad Chun ’82 have two children, Michael (12) and Megan (10). They enjoy living in Washington state and taking advantage of all the Pacific Northwest offerings such as biking, fishing, clamming and crabbing. Alice mans the homefront and is a “super soccer mom” while Brad is in the Engineering Design Group for FLT Controls on Boeing’s new 787 aircraft.

Kyle Wong ’89 vowed to donate his old gym uniform to Pattie Heatherly for the new Community Center, after saving it for all these years. Kyle and Regina Madrid Haslam ’81 (as well as another Maryknoll grad not in attendance) had already met each other through the elementary school that their children attend together. It’s a small world after all!

The afternoon ended with more than a half hour’s worth of goodbyes in Donna’s driveway – a sure sign that the reunion was a success!

PORTLAND, OREGON October 22, 2006 Alumni gathered for lunch in the lovely home of Myrna Pasion Boyce ’56 and her husband Butch who live in Tigard. School President Michael Baker, Director of Development Yvonne Usita Morris ’63, then Alumni Relations Coordinator Mara Ishida Saito ’84 and Athletics Director Pattie Wong Heatherly ’66 gave the latest updates about Maryknoll School. The catered lunch featured ono food such as pancit and lumpia.

Some notes on alumni who attended: In their home, Myrna and Butch display a wall map with pushpins for all the places they have visited. With their world travels, the map is quite well covered. Their sons are in London and Hong Kong, so Myrna and Butch are jet-setters always bound for another destination.

Corliss Mukaigawa Boehne ’74 was very enthusiastic about the plans for the Maryknoll School Community Center. She had a message for her class: “Class of 1974: Step it up!! Maryknoll has been a wonderful school for all of us. Please consider giving to Maryknoll as the Class of 1937 has 100% participation.” Corliss hopes all her classmates are doing well.

Yvette Flair Elledge ’83 lives in Sherwood, OR and stays busy working for the State of Oregon Retirement System and also being mom to her boys, Grant (3) and Donovan (6), who keep her on her toes. Yvette says, “It was great to reconnect with fellow alumni. Great food, great people.”

Lisa Armenio-Reis ’88 attended with her children, daughter Halia (2) and son Donovan (1). At the time of the reunion, another son was on the way!

Carey Takeyesu Yen ’90 and her family have lived in Battle Ground, WA for the past three years. Husband Ivan works as the corporate chief pilot for DC3 Entertainment. Carey is the stay-at-home mom of Curren (2) and has a successful home business with Arbonne International. Carey and Lisa had already gotten to know each other through their husbands who worked together in Hawaii and now they are in Washington together. Again, it’s a small world after all!

Remembering One of Maryknoll’s Unsung Heroines

O

ne of Maryknoll’s heroines, Shirley Mae Thompson Campos, passed away on February 26, 2007, and a well-attended celebration of her life was held on March 3 at Sacred Heart Church in Manoa.

Shirley touched the lives of thousands of students, parents, teachers, and administrators during the 30 years she worked at Maryknoll.

She first got involved with Maryknoll when her eldest daughter, Shana Campos Tong ’83, was in kindergarten and volunteered her mom to help with the snack bar. Soon, Shirley was managing the snack bar and then became the secretary to the principal.

One of Shirley’s closest friends, Bunnie Kaahaaina, worked beside Shirley for three decades.

“Shirley was a great listener. I used to tease her about the extra chair alongside her desk, saying it was like the couch in an analyst’s office, only her fee was a whole lot less. She was the trusted confidant of many,” said Bunnie.

Bunnie, who gave Shirley’s eulogy, says Shirley was known for her “broke da mouth” malasadas and chocolate chip cookies. But more important than the talents she shared with people, was the way she treated them.

“She believed in people and their basic decency,” said Bunnie.

“She advocated for, and physically aided, everyone who needed help.”

She always gave with an open hand.”

Shirley found ways to help families that were short of money. She started the school’s uniform recycling sale, where parents could purchase used uniforms at a fraction of the cost.

Shirley was also known for her amazing memory and sense of humor.

“Her ability to recall the names and faces of students long graduated was remarkable, but it also meant that she remembered any mischief they may have gotten into while they were in school,” said Bunnie.

Her love for her family was deep and her commitment to Maryknoll and her Catholic faith were unwavering.

Shirley was extremely proud of her three children – Shana, Tanya Campos Higa ’85 and Joseph Campos ’88 – who graduated from Maryknoll, and was thrilled that Shana’s children, Sage and Aspen Marie, are now attending the school too, where Shana is principal of the grade school division. Shirley loved spending time with all four of her grandchildren, including Tanya’s boys – James Robert and Mathieu Lawrence.

The Monsignor Charles A. Kekumano Scholarship & Award Dinner Sheraton Waikiki May 27, 2007

T

he Monsignor Charles A. Kekumano Scholarship & Award Dinner raises funds for the Kekumano Scholarship Fund, and in the last few years, has also benefited the capital campaign to build the Maryknoll School Community Center. The annual dinner has become a premier event for Maryknoll School raising more than $1,000,000 since it was first held in 1998.

The honoree at the first dinner, Monsignor Charles A. Kekumano, was recognized for his selfless contributions to community. In memory of the Monsignor, the Noblesse Oblige Award for Service is awarded annually to those who devote their talent to the service of others and who give both example and meaning to Maryknoll’s motto, Noblesse Oblige – “to whom much is given, much is expected.”

Past recipients of the Noblesse Oblige Award for Service include Dr. Livingston Wong ’48, Jim Gahler, Irmgard Farden Aluli, Cha and Jack Thompson, Nina Keali’iwahamana Rodrigues Rapozo ’54, Dr. Jorge Camara and Governor George Ariyoshi.

Kekumano Scholars The Monsignor Charles A. Kekumano Scholarship is awarded annually to a returning Maryknoll student entering their junior or senior year who demonstrates excellence both inside and outside the classroom.

2007 Kekumano Scholar – Cheri Amas ’08 Kekumano scholar Cheri Amas was admired among her peers, family and teachers for being dedicated to her school, church, and community. While at Maryknoll, she was an active member of various groups including the National Honor Society, Campus Ministry, and the cheer/dance squad. A gifted dancer, she performed and competed with the nationally acclaimed Drill Team Hawaii for many years. Cheri is the daughter of Jeffery and Mona Amas.

WALLY K. YONAMINE 2007 NOBLESSE OBLIGE AWARD FOR SERVICE One of the finest athletes ever to come out of Hawaii, Wally Yonamine attained stardom as a player for the Yomiuri Giants, the most famous team in Japanese baseball. Upon his retirement as a player, Wally went on to a long career as a coach and manager for several teams, including the Giants. He was inducted into the Japanese Baseball Hall of Fame in 1994.

In the true spirit of Noblesse Oblige (“to whom much is given, much is expected”), Wally created the Wally Yonamine Foundation in 1995 for the purpose of promoting high school education through sports. For the last 11 years, the foundation has sponsored the Hawaii High School Athletic Association’s (HHSAA) Annual Baseball Tournament. It has also provided college scholarships to outstanding scholar-athletes. Wally recently created an endowment to fund the HHSAA Annual Baseball Tournament in perpetuity.

In 1998, Wally was honored by the Japanese government with the Order of the Sacred Treasure, Gold Rays with Rosette in recognition for his “outstanding service and achievements in strengthening the bonds of friendship between Japan and Hawaii.” He was the first professional athlete to be awarded this honor.

Wally and his wife Jane have three children and seven grandchildren.

A

lumni Week culminates with the Class Dinner – a gathering for alumni, current and former faculty members, and guests. At the dinner, the winner of the “President’s Cup” is announced. This recognition is given to the reunion class with the greatest increase in percentage of classmates making gifts to the school’s annual fund.

The highlight of the evening is the presentation of the Alumni Achievement Awards, which is given for notable accomplishments in service to others, attained in the spirit of the Maryknoll School motto, Noblesse Oblige (“to whom much is given, much is expected”).

The first Alumni Achievement Award was presented in 1973 to Dr. Livingston Wong ’48, a pioneer of kidney and bone marrow transplants in Hawaii. For the next six years, the award was presented annually to an alumnus who perpetuated the spirit of Maryknoll. The award was reinstated in 2000 at Maryknoll School’s first annual Alumni Week social event, and was coordinated by the school’s Alumni Association.

Mahalo to all alumni who attended the Class Dinner to celebrate the Maryknoll spirit. Special thanks to the reunion representatives whose hard work made each of their respective class gatherings a wonderful celebration of friendship.

The 2007 President’s Cup was awarded to the Class of 1967. Accepting the award on behalf of her class was Gail Nakagaki Tiwanak ’67, who serves as co-chair of the alumni portion of the AIM (Annual Investment in Maryknoll) campaign.

Dr. Shirai was born in Honolulu on May 29, 1930. He attended both Maryknoll Grade School and Maryknoll High School, and earned his undergraduate degree at St. Mary’s University in San Antonio, Texas. He received his medical degree from Creighton University School of Medicine, Omaha and interned at St. Catherine’s Hospital, also in Omaha. He served two years in the U.S. Army, stationed in Korea, and was a pediatric resident at hospitals in both Louisiana and Honolulu. He began his private practice of pediatrics in 1960 and retired in 2003 after a 43-year career.

The Shirai family has a vibrant legacy at Maryknoll. Dr. Shirai, his wife Edna, his four children and two sisters are Maryknoll graduates. Dr. Shirai was one of the founding members of the Maryknoll Boosters Club, which started the annual school luau in the 1970s. For 25 years until his passing, Dr. Shirai served as Maryknoll’s school physician and medical consultant.

Reynold Shirai has been described as “a humble, honest, generous, loving, fun and practical man of strong Catholic faith.” In gratitude for Dr. Shirai’s service and character, the Alumni Achievement Award was presented to Edna Kozuma Shirai ’49.

ALUMNI WEEK Alumni Achievement Awards PAUL CHINEN ’57 2007 ALUMNI ACHIEVEMENT AWARD Paul Chinen, the son of Kailua vegetable farmer, who was offered the opportunity to attend Maryknoll by Fr. James Jackson. While in school, Paul served as a member of the Maryknoll’s ROTC and rifle team, and the Army Reserve. He went on to earn his Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering from Seattle University and a Master’s degree in civil and structural engineering from Iowa State University.

Paul served 31 years of active duty with the US Army Corps of Engineers, including a two-year volunteer stint in Vietnam as a combat engineer, a position at the Pentagon, and command of the North Atlantic Division, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, headquartered in New York City.

He retired in 1994 as a brigadier general, the first general of Okinawan ancestry in the US Army, and recently retired from his position as vice president of the Pacific Region Office of Earth Tech, Inc. As the recipient of the Army Engineer Association’s Silver de Fleury Medal, Paul was described using the phrases, “Inspirational leadership…selfless service…a beacon for others to follow…”

Paul is vice chair of the Maryknoll School Board and former president of the Maryknoll School Alumni Association. He and his wife Yvonne live in Kailua.

For more than 25 years, Haunani Apoliona has dedicated herself to the Native Hawaiian community through her work at the Office of Hawaiian Affairs, Alu Like, Inc., a variety of civic activities, and her music. After earning her master’s degree in social work from the University of Hawaii in 1976, she worked briefly in the Third Circuit Court on the Big Island. A year later, she returned to Oahu, joined Alu Like as an employment and training counselor and eventually came to serve as president and CEO. Haunani’s employment served as a medium for her civic and broad-based community work. She resigned her Alu Like positions after her 1996 election as a trustee of the Office of Hawaiian Affairs. She now serves as the chairperson of OHA’s Board of Trustees.

Haunani has served on nearly three dozen boards, committees, and commissions, including the President’s Advisory Commission on Asian American and Pacific Islanders, Native Hawaiian Chamber of Commerce, Queen Lili’uokalani Children’s Center Advisory Board, Queen Emma Foundation, The Nature Conservancy, Bank of Hawai’i Corporation, and U.S. Bureau of the Census Race Ethnic Advisory Council.

Haunani’s involvement in the community has been recognized through awards from various organizations such as the Asian and Pacific American Woman’s Leadership Institute, Native Hawaiian Chamber of Commerce, Distinguished Alumni of the University of Hawaii, and the Hawaiian Civics Club.

In addition to all this, she is a master slack-key guitarist who won several Na Hoku Hanohano awards, and composed many songs, including the Hoku Hanohano Award winning song, “Alu Like.” Haunani has been a professional entertainer since 1977 and performs as a member of the group Olomana.

T

he 100 Days Dinner kicked off the seniors’ traditional countdown to graduation, but also marked a new tradition – honoring an individual from the jubilarian class (50th graduation anniversary class). The first Golden Alumni Award was presented to Gordon Tom ’57.

Gordon was surprised and honored by the award, which is given to someone who has given the most to his or her classmates and Maryknoll School over the past 50 years, and who continues to practice the Christian values they learned at school.

Gordon serves as unofficial class officer for his graduating class, but felt it should’ve been more of a group award because he’s not the only one contacting classmates and coordiGordon Tom ’57 received the first Golden Alumni Award from Alumni nating get-togethers.

Association President Paul Chinen ’57 Gordon retired as at the 100 Days Dinner. a captain from the Honolulu Fire Department in 1993, and after doing contract work for Aloha Airlines, he’s now working at Vacations Hawaii, so he’s in Las Vegas once a month. His down time is now filled with helping his family care for his mother, and spending time with his six children, nine grandchildren, and one great grandchild.

Student Senate President Jeremy Ramos ’07 won the Maryknoll School Alumni Association Scholarship.

Classmates describe Jeremy as the backbone of their class, and instrumental in keeping communication between them alive, so they can remain lifelong friends.

Class of 1982 Celebrates Silver

ith definite plans to move back to Hawaii after living in New Jersey for 20 years, and having had such a great time at our 20th reunion, I thought, “What better way to return home than to help plan our big silver high school reunion?” My good friend, Laura Domondon Lee from Danville, CA, was already on it and she gave me a call – we became co-chairs and renewed our friendship after many years and miles apart. Although we were dealing with three time zones (East Coast, West Coast and Hawaii), we managed to pull it off with emails and late night phone calls.

The Class of 1982 celebrated its 25th reunion on July 20, 2007 at the Willows Restaurant in Moiliili. Thirty-seven classmates and nine spouses and guests enjoyed a fun-filled evening of reuniting, reminiscing, enjoying good food and drink, playing some class and music trivia games, watching a slide show, and looking at yearbooks to remind us of the good ol’ high school years. We also sadly remembered Devon Duarte who passed away in June 2003.

Several classmates pitched in with the reunion: Alfredo Garma of Garma Graphic Design made nametags for the third time, Kathy Kubo of Magical Photo Creations, designed our candy-wrapped favors with Michelle Goo Chang providing the candy. Richard Kishaba brought our sound-system, Nikki Siu Brissette brought the overhead projector, and Lisa Wong Gruebner used her powers of persuasion to get more classmates to join in. She also collected updates from all those who made it to the reunion.

There were a few first attendees (Betty Jean Ah Yuen Panui, Bill Fernandez, Carrie Watanabe, and Luana Rapoza Resuello) and it was wonderful to see them again after 25 years! We urge all of our classmates to try to keep in touch with at least one person and to reach out to find our “lost” classmates so we can see more new faces from the past at our 30th.

Laura and I really enjoyed planning and attending the reunion, but what was most special was spending time and working together again. It was an experience we’ll never forget and one we’d highly recommend. So who’s volunteering to do our 30th?

32nd Annual Luau Blaisdell Exhibition Hall October 21, 2007

T

here was lots of food, fun and entertainment at the 32nd Annual Luau, all for a good cause.

It raised more than $30,000 for Maryknoll School’s AIM (Annual Investment in Maryknoll) Campaign. Mahalo to all the parents, students and faculty volunteers.

Sam Aiona served as emcee, Maryknoll Sister Joan Chatfield gave the invocation, and there were games for the kids, and lots of entertainment with music by Crosswind, a taiko drum performance, and dances by Te Vevo Tahiti No Manoa, Drill Team Hawaii, and Halau Hula O Hokulani.
