WOW, WHAT A WINTER SPORTS SEASON! SAVE THE DATE ALUMNI EVENTS

Aloha Maryknoll Alumni, It has been a very busy winter season at Maryknoll with multiple teams winning ILH Championships and making State Tournament appearances. As with all sports seasons, our scholar athletes began with hard work and optimism. Through their commitment and unselfishness we began to see how those values led to success both in and out of their sports venues.

Our girls basketball program under the guidance of Chico Furtado led the way. The girls had another banner year. They captured their fourth ILH Championship in four years. The word “Dynasty” has been tossed around when referring to this four-year run. They again made the State Finals Tournament appearance and the sea of maroon and gold was there to support them.

THANK YOU! Not to be overshadowed by the girls, Coach Kelly Grant ’84 and the boys basketball program had a run of their own this year. They secured a State berth at the end of the regular season and went on to win an ILH Championship in front of a packed house at the Maryknoll Community Center. And, like the girls, the boys headed into the State Tourney as the #1 seeded team and made it to the semi-finals. Again, we saw a sea of maroon and gold at the Stan Sheriff supporting our team.

KUPUNA PROGRAM The new Maryknoll “Alumni Kupuna Program,” kicked off on January 25, 2018, with lunch, a social hour and a presentation by Emily Wong ’91 McCollum, Wealth Management Advisor at Merrill Lynch, on “Planning the New Age of Retirement – 7 Life Priorities.”

We plan to hold our Kupuna Programs quarterly in the Maryknoll Community Center Alumni Room. While these gatherings are geared toward our retired and senior alumni, all alums who want to attend are welcome.

Our next program is on Thursday, April 26, from 10 a.m.-12:30 p.m. and will focus on health and wellness. Dr. Theresa Wee ’72 will give a presentation on “Health Concerns for Seniors,” and LindaMary Kaneshiro ’62 will present on tai chi for those with arthritis. Lunch is free.

YOUNG ALUMS RETURN TO CAMPUS

OUR ALUMS IN LOS ANGELES

#SPARTANSTRONG Both teams held on to the #1 ranking (Star Advertiser and ScoringLive) for much of the season. Along with this unprecedented accomplishment, they each won an ILH title in the same year, making it extra special for the Maryknoll community. All the while, they maintained excellent grades and displayed great character.

Not to be outdone, the boys Pac 5 soccer team, led by nine Maryknoll School scholar athletes, also made a State Tournament appearance. As the ILH representative, they went on to a quarterfinal victory.

They then took the top-seeded team to the brink in the semifinals.

Maryknoll also sent eight swimmers to the State Tournament on Maui. Much like last year, we had a great showing with several athletes advancing to the semifinals and finals.

These scholar athletes’ accomplishments are no small task given the rigors of a Maryknoll education. It’s a great feeling for the Athletic Department and our athletes when they know the alumni are always there to support them. I had the pleasure of seeing many of you at these State Tournaments and THANK YOU for your support throughout the year. For as you know, we ALL have a hand in the accomplishments of Maryknoll students.

Alumni from the last five graduating classes (2013 – 2017) returned to campus December 27, 2017, for our annual Holiday Homecoming and an afternoon of Archery Dodgeball, BBQ and catching up with old and new friends. Parents of our young alumni prepared an ono BBQ lunch. The Class of 2016 seemed to win the most games, but as we mixed the teams everyone was a winner and the Archery Dodgeball was a big hit.

Los Angeles area alumni gathered on Jan. 20, 2018, at the Brookside Golf Club in Pasadena to visit with friends old and new. They enjoyed cocktails and a wonderful buffet dinner.

A special thank you to alumni and parents who helped to make Holiday Homecoming 2017 a huge success.
