CELEBRATING MARYKNOLL AT ALUMNI WEEK 2017 Alumni Week 2017 was a huge success thanks to the many who turned out to celebrate all that it means to be a part of the Maryknoll alumni family.

We kicked off the week on Sunday, July 16, 2017, with the annual Jared Kaufmann ’58 Memorial Bowl-A-Rama Tournament at Aiea Bowl. The tournament was at capacity and bowlers had a wonderful afternoon on the lanes and enjoying the always ono food.

Everyone got goodie bags fi lled with Maryknoll logo items, cookies donated by Trung Lam ’99 and Brandon Lam ‘02 from La Tour Café, Jack in the Box and Jamba Juice certificates from Glenn Dela Cruz ’98.

Gier ’88, Michael Kaufmann ‘99, Kavett Kaopua ’88, Mari-Jo Correa ‘80, Michelle Nakanishi-Sarae ‘91, Keenan Kurihara ‘10, the tournament ran smoothly and was a huge success.

The top female bowler was Kaycie Yamasaki ’17 and the top male bowler was Kyle Miyamoto.

The winners were presented Maryknoll letter jackets by Michael Kaufmann ’99 and Kavett Kaopua ’88. The grand raffle prize, a 49” television was donated by Elliott Chamizo ’61.

The tournament was co-chaired by Andy Yee ’63 and Maryknoll varsity golf coach Danny Lau. Aaron Tom ’12, Nikki Brissette ’82, Ashlyn Kawasaki ’11, Reggie Pang ’63 and Blaine Gier ’88, worked tirelessly with a cadre of volunteers of alumni, parents and the Maryknoll Golf teams to be sure our golfers had a great experience on the course and at the prize banquet afterwards.

NINETEEN FIFTIES Anyone who visits Pohai Nani Retirement Home on the Windward side of the island has probably met Maxine Echols ’55 Pada. Macky greets everyone with her infectious smile and a wealth of information on Pohai Nani. After many years spent on Johnston Island working for contractor Holmes and Narver, Macky returned to Hawaii intending to retire and live a leisurely life. However, Macky still enjoys interacting with people and keeping active with her position at Pohai Nani.

Teresita Hilario ’55 Jubinsky is living at Kahala Nui retirement home after she and her late husband, John, sold their beautiful home on Pacific Heights. Teresita graciously hosted many of our class reunion planning meetings at her house. As one classmate said, we lost our clubhouse.

Antonella “Tiny” Chock ‘55 Bennett and her husband, Joe, live in Pasadena, CA. They, along with Albert Chang ‘55 hosted Sr. Rosario Daley and Sr. Joan Chatfield during their stopover in California on their way to the Maryknoll Motherhouse. Tiny is celebrating her birthday with a luau with her siblings, Audrey, Bully and Germaine at her house in Pasadena.

Georgia Mae Mundon ’55 Bustamante and her husband, Victor, live in Las Vegas NV. After Georgia Mae retired from City Mill and Vic from Hawaiian Electric Company, they moved to Las Vegas to be closer to their daughter, who lives in Arizona.

Eugene Yee ‘55 and Clement Paiaina ’55 are retired Honolulu Fire Department captains.

After retirement from HFD, Eugene, who is also known as Bucky, started a second career

operating limousine service Elite Limo. Bucky has generously donated limo service to transport the Maryknoll Sisters to many Class of ’55 functions.

Bucky’s grandchildren (twins) attend Maryknoll School. Clement served HFD many years as a fire captain in Search and Rescue. Clement is active in canoe paddling and racing, carrying on the family activity started by his father.

The Class of 1955 without the benefit of the new STEM program at Maryknoll still managed to produce four engineers. Lincoln Char, James Chun and Kenneth Kwock all graduated from the University of Hawaii at Manoa with a B.S. degree in civil engineering. Lincoln, a licensed structural engineer, retired from the state Department of Transportation. James, a licensed civil engineer, retired from the Department of Defense NAVFACENGCOM Pacific at Pearl Harbor.

Kenneth, a licensed civil engineer, spent his career in private industry with various consulting engineering firms. Andrew Padilla earned his B.S degree from Notre Dame University and his master’s and PhD degrees in chemical engineering from the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor. He lived in Richmond, WA and worked in the industry to produce nuclear energy.

His daughter followed in his footsteps and is a chemical engineer in Washington State.

After a long banking career, Dennis Chong ‘55 is retired and lives with his wife, Bernice, in Manoa.

Dennis’ grandson, a freshman at Punahou, is an excellent junior golfer and keeps Dennis busy with all of the golf lessons and tournaments.

Congratulations to Eloise Yano ‘55 and her husband who became great-grandparents for the second time with the birth of their greatgrandson, Tevaka, born on June 12, 2017.

Mary Hayashida ‘72 Norman is Clinical Supervisor/Program Manager with WorkLife Hawaii.

Nelson Koyanagi ’72 is Director of Budget and Fiscal Services for the City and County of Honolulu.

Cynthia Ichiriu ’72 Keller is a dentist and with her husband, Bruce, has owned Kaneohe Family Dental Care, Inc. since 1984.

Tony Chun ’72 is retired as an Educational Administrator with the Leeward District Office of the Department of Education.

The Maryknoll Class of 1987 held their 30th reunion dinner at the beautiful Mid Pac Country Club on July 29. Twenty-seven classmates and their spouses enjoyed a delicious Hawaiian food buffet and listened to a special 80s mix courtesy of Keoni LittleJohn. The evening was full of love, laughter and reminiscing as everyone caught up with each other and participated loudly as Bobby Kleckner asked us to vote for the classmate who had the best skin, most grandkids, and who of us still looked the most different than they did in high school.

At the end of the evening no one wanted to leave… we could have stayed all night and still would have been talking and laughing in the morning. Thank you so much to all who came; it was truly a night fi lled with Spartan pride as we all understood how blessed we were to have had the opportunity to be a part of such a wonderful class. Special thanks to those who traveled to be with us and the reunion committee who made the night possible.

The week was capped by the Alumni Luau, which this year returned to its roots as an alumni celebration. More than 300 alumni and family members feasted on kalua pig, lau lau, chicken long rice, squid luau, poke, lomi salmon, poi, rice, haupia, pineapple, beer and wine and Starbucks coffee.

Members of the Class of 1988, under the direction of Wil Cordes ‘88, owner of Forty Niner Restaurant, prepared the food; the Class of 1963 made the haupia and the Class of 1978 took charge of serving the food. The crowd was entertained by Nina Kealiiwahamana Rapozo ’54.

The class of 1967, celebrating its Golden Jubilee, honored Pat Muneno ’67 with the Golden Jubilarian Award, which

recognizes the person who has done the most throughout the years to keep the class connected and engaged with Maryknoll. The awardee is chosen by members of the class. The Class gave of gift of $16,375.00 to the school to be used for scholarships. The Maryknoll Alumni Association awarded two scholarships to two recent graduates (and brand new alums!): Andrew Ancheta ’17 who is attending Chaminade University with a major in biology and Jasmine Chow ‘17, who is attending UCLA on a pre-med track.

SR. ANITA SMITH May 28, 1925—September 4, 2017 Sr. Anita Smith, who was a teacher and principal at Maryknoll Grade School in the 1960s and 1970s, died Sept. 4, 2017, in Connecticut. She was 92 and had been a Maryknoll Sister for 70 years.

Anita Marguerite Smith was born on May 28, 1925 in Hartford CT to John Joseph Smith and Anna (Relihan) Smith, the fourth child in a family of six girls and one boy.

She entered the Maryknoll Sisters in 1947. When she was officially received into the Congregation, following the custom of the times, she received the name, Sister Mary Theophane.

She was missioned to Waialua, Oahu, in 1950 and taught 5th through 8th grade at St. Michael’s and came to Maryknoll Grade School in 1959. In 1972, she returned to the Mainland and earned a Masters of Arts in Education Administration at Fairfield University. She then returned to Honolulu to serve as principal of Maryknoll Grade School until 1981.

In 1981, Sr. Anita returned to school to earn a Master of Arts Degree in Pastoral Ministry from St. Joseph’s College in West Hartford and worked with runaway women at Covenant House in New York City. In 1984, Anita and her beloved sister Rosemary went to Hawaii to start a new mission in Holualoa on the Big Island, where she served as a pastoral assistant, shared a chaplaincy ministry with an ecumenical group of ministers and participated in a drug awareness program in the schools.

In 1990, Sr. Anita returned to the Maryknoll Center in Ossining for congregational service. She then joined a new community of Maryknoll Sisters in Waterbury, Connecticut and did ministry at Catholic Family Services. Upon learning that her sister Rosemary was terminally ill, Anita went to live with her sister Mary to assist Rosemary in her illness. When Rosemary died, Anita continued to live with Mary and worked with the Mercy Sisters at Trust House, a Learning Center for the disadvantaged in West Hartford, Connecticut.

Sr. Anita always remained open and eager to understand the culture of all the people she served the greeting of aloha was second nature to her and Hawaii was never far from her heart.
