ORTHOTICS An orthosis is a brace that can support your spine or a disabled or weakened limb. Pedorthics are specifically designed to improve your foot and ankle function. Orthoses can help temporarily or long-term to ease pain, assist or limit movement, help rehabilitation, correct function and shape or guide movement. After a comprehensive evaluation, your clinician will oversee preparation of your orthosis, and teach you how to safely use it. We have an extensive on-site lab staffed with expert technicians.

PEDIATRIC ORTHOTICS Our pediatric orthotists work closely with your family and your child’s physicians and therapists to provide the most appropriate orthotic technology. We continually serve children with cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, spasticity, scoliosis, spinal cord injury or spina bifida.

CRANIAL REMOLDING ORTHOSES We partner with parents and doctors on the prevention and treatment of head-shape abnormalities. We utilize 3-D scanning technology, which quickly and comfortably measures your infant’s head shape. If our thorough evaluation indicates treatment, our clinical experts will discuss a customized care plan for your child’s needs. This may or may not include a cranial remolding helmet. We’ve worked with thousands of families to provide care for a wide variety of headshape abnormalities, including deformational plagiocephaly, brachycephaly, scaphocephaly and post-operative cranial synostosis. We’re a leading provider of STARband, the most widely used cranial remolding orthosis in the world.
SCOLIOSIS SERVICES Scoliosis is a potentially debilitating, abnormal curvature of the spine, which typically appears when your child is 9 to 14 years old. Your child’s doctor evaluates the effect of the scoliosis on back pain, breathing or any disfigurement to determine if a brace is needed. If one is ordered, your Mary Free Bed orthotist provides comprehensive scoliosis services to prevent further curvature of the spine.

CARE LIAISON Our amputee care liaisons provide advocacy, education and support for you and your family. From sharing what to expect after your amputation to teaching you how to care for your residual limb and coordinating timing for a prosthesis, our liaison is there for you at every stage.
CLINIC Our Amputee Clinic utilizes a multi-disciplinary approach and is available whether or not you’re a Mary Free Bed patient. The clinic is led by a physical medicine & rehabilitation physician and includes physical therapists, nurses and prosthetists. We care for more than 325 patients each year and have a 99.8 percent satisfaction rate. Life-long support and follow-up care is offered if you have lost a limb or if you have a congenital limb difference.
CENTER FOR LIMB DIFFERENCES We provide comprehensive diagnosis, treatment and ongoing care for infants, children and teens with congenital and acquired limb differences. When it was established in 1946, the center was the nation’s first to focus exclusively on the unique needs of young patients. Our work continues to be pioneering.
SUPPORT GROUP The Great Lakes Amputee Network is Mary Free Bed’s support group for those affected by limb loss. The group meets monthly to discuss topics related to quality of life and peer support, and to share in fun group activities, such as bowling and kayaking.
CUSTOM WHEELCHAIR SEATING Our custom wheelchair seating experts work with you and your support team to create solutions that maximize your independence, mobility and safety. From the time of the first evaluation to the final adjustment, our team is focused solely on supporting you and your goals. Can’t come to us? We’ll come to you. Our Custom Wheelchair Seating mobile unit is available to help patients who can’t easily travel for services or who need special on-site assistance in a school or facility setting. We serve locations within a 1.5 hour radius of downtown Grand Rapids.
ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY We offer a variety of specialized services, including devices to help you communicate your thoughts and independently operate computers, televisions and other environmental systems. Specially-trained technicians and therapists work with you, your family and other caregivers to determine the best technology for your rehabilitation. Demonstration equipment trials will allow you to get a feel for what devices will be most helpful.
