C O M E , S T AY, Our goal is the same as yours: Help your child maximize his or her ability. We know specialization and experience pay off. That’s why your child will have the same pediatric team throughout his or her inpatient stay. This is proven to help patients consistently exceed national rehabilitation outcomes.

Your child’s team will include: • A physician who is board certified in pediatric rehabilitation.

• Specially-trained nurses, therapists, speech-language pathologists, psychologists, neuropsychologists, a child life specialist, registered dietitians and care managers.

• A team member with four legs! Vandy is our certified therapy dog, who lifts spirits as she motivates.

There’s no doubt about it; rehabilitation is hard work. Because play is a child’s work, pediatric therapists adapt sessions based on what children love. Our effective formula: Rehabilitation + Fun = Better Results.

Therapy is scheduled every day unless rest is recommended.

ST T H E L AT E N I N O I N N OVAT I AT I O N : T I L I B A H RE Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital is specifically designed to help patients recover from illnesses and injuries, but we make it as un-hospital-like as possible. Colors are bright and cheery. Rooms are private. Leading-edge technology is appropriately sized. Plus, there are separate therapy gyms and social areas for young children and teens. The pediatric neighborhood is a friendly and safe space, where card access is selectively granted to staff, parents and caregivers.

THE U O Y G N I GIV Our tech gurus customize equipment to your child’s needs. Whether it’s limited fine motor skills or hand function, we’ll find devices to enhance independence at home, school or work. If arm and hand movements pose a problem, we’ll create systems so your child can dial or take notes on a cell phone, activate a television remote or operate a wheelchair with a sip-and-puff device. Perhaps the ability to communicate is restricted.

Our bioengineers will create augmentative communication devices, which enable your child to make his or her thoughts and feelings known.

STORY Arlee Rodgers has cerebral palsy, but CP doesn’t have her. The feisty 7-year-old was at Mary Free Bed learning to walk again following major corrective surgery at C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital in Ann Arbor.

When she arrived at Mary Free Bed, Arlee could stand for eight seconds. During the next five weeks, she not only made great progress, but she also stole our hearts. Arlee approached each day with optimistic energy, whether she was swimming in the pool, riding an adaptive bike, planning a surprise birthday party for her mother, forming a singing group (Arlee and the Crowns) or dancing in a gym.

When Arlee headed home to the Lansing area and outpatient therapy, she was walking on her own with only an arm crutch.

No one knows your child better than you, so information you provide about your child’s history, personality and preferences is extremely helpful. You’ll be involved in every aspect of your child’s care, including participation in therapy sessions. You’re welcome to stay in your child’s room or at our hotel on campus. There’s also shuttle service between Mary Free Bed and the nearby Ronald McDonald House. When your child is ready to graduate from inpatient treatment, expect education and support from us.

Mary Free Bed’s Wheelchair & Adaptive Sports program offers more than 100 competitive teams, clinics and classes for any interest. An annual favorite is Junior Wheelchair Sports Camp. The week-long event helps campers build confidence by participating in a variety of sports and fun activities.
