Rehabilitation takes dedication and hard work. The effort you make now will reap greater rewards later. Research shows the sooner you begin vigorous rehabilitation, the better your outcome will be. Mary Free Bed has 100-plus medical and sports rehabilitation programs, more than any rehabilitation hospital in the world. If you need outpatient rehabilitation or special services after you go home, we’re here.

THERAPY You’ll have the same rehabilitation team throughout your inpatient stay.

Led by a physician board certified in rehabilitation medicine, your team will include specially-trained rehabilitation nurses, physical, occupational and speech therapists, psychologists, neuropsychologists, registered dietitians and care managers. Therapy occurs in your room or in specialized gyms on your floor. You’ll receive at least three hours of therapy five or more days a week, targeting strength and balance as well as motor and cognitive skills.

YOUR FAMILY Loved ones are welcome to participate in your therapy, particularly those who will help when you get home. They’re welcome to stay in your room or at our hotel right on campus. If your child is a patient, there’s also a shuttle service between Mary Free Bed and the nearby Ronald McDonald House.

DESTINATION LOCATIONS While Mary Free Bed is designed specifically for rehabilitation, we’ve made it as un-hospital-like as possible. Bright and cheerful colors create an uplifting environment. A mix of quiet and lively social spaces are located throughout the building to enjoy with your visitors. There are also complimentary washers and dryers for your use.

PRIVATE ROOMS Make yourself at home in your spacious, private room. Features include a 42-inch television, large bathroom, secure storage for personal belongings and electronics, a sleeper sofa, patient lift and abundant natural light.

PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE You’ll spend time sharpening everyday living skills such as bathing, dressing, cooking and doing laundry. We have a kitchen, bedroom and bathroom where you’ll practice before you head home.

HOPE AND FREEDOM Each therapy gym is designed for patients with specific conditions.

For example, if you have a spinal cord injury, you might be in a gym with bikes that use electrical currents to energize muscles. For patients with severe brain injury, a low-stimulation gym provides a quieter environment for therapy sessions.

INDEGO® An exoskeleton with motorized hips and legs, the Indego® helps if you’ve had a stroke, spinal cord injury or another condition that limits mobility. The robotic walking device automatically moves your legs and provides support as you stand and walk.

LOKOMAT® This intensive, robot-assisted walking technology focuses on muscle strength and memory. As you become stronger and more proficient, therapists reduce the amount of assistance the Lokomat® provides.

RT300 FES CYCLE This therapy tool uses electrical stimulation to re-educate and strengthen your muscles, improve circulation and increase range of motion.

THERAPY POOLS Our aquatic therapy pools warm and relax your muscles, improving circulation and range of motion. The water provides a safe environment to work on your strength, flexibility, standing and walking.

ZeroG ® One of the biggest obstacles to vigorous rehabilitation is the fear of falling. Our sophisticated, ceiling-mounted ambulation systems help you safely and confidently practice standing, walking and other balance tasks.

ORTHOTICS & PROSTHETICS + BIONICS Located right on our Grand Rapids campus, this team tailors technology to you. If you need a brace, certified orthotists measure and create one that’s comfortable and effective. Our certified prosthetists use computerized and bionic technology to create a prosthetic device that maximizes your function and ensures your safety. Experienced equipment specialists in our OrthoSEAT division customize your wheelchair for ultimate comfort, safety and mobility. Finally, biomedical engineers create adaptive devices that help you overcome limitations.
