This Boddan Lodge comic book is the result of an Ambition For Ageing project through the National Lottery Community Fund, facilitated by the Broughton Trust and Mary Burns Community Group, and is aimed at “creating more age-friendly places by connecting communities and people through the creation of relationships, development of existing assets and putting older people at the heart of designing the places they live”...

How long have you been coming to Boddan Lodge?

Carol: Two years Ron and Joan: 18 years – we were looking for places to go when we retired Jeff: Six months – it took a couple of months to make my mind up to join.

Ken: 20 years Anne: Six years I came with a friend to do line dancing Ian: Six good years – when I retired I joined straight away.

Derek: Three years – my uncle was a member so I decided to walk in and take up membership for my wife and I. Pauline: 18 years – I had to wait until I reached sixty because I was 58 then!

Krys: About four years Denise: 17 years – after a hip operation I had to find gentle exercise for my age.

Jack: Six years. I was a postman delivering mail locally and when I was coming up to retirement I just knocked on the door and asked to join.

How did you feel when you first arrived at the Club?

Ken: I was welcomed by all the members Jean: I expected it to be more regimented Krys: My first reaction was how shabby it looked – but with a happy atmosphere!

Irene: We came for a game of bowls but then I was asked to join so I did Jeff: I was curious about the things going on, like I only did bowling years ago, and this was a start to take it up again and other things.

Jean T: I was made welcome very friendly Derek: You felt as though you had been a member for years, they were very friendly Anne: I felt very welcomed Joan: It was very friendly so I carried on coming to keep fit.

Val: It was very sociable and you were made welcome and at ease Carol: It was a few months before I actually came here; I had been living away from Salford and was depressed when I moved back. I saw an old friend here and the rest is history. I really enjoy it!

Ron and Joan: You felt as though you had been a member for years, everyone was very friendly Denise: I thought it was great as I knew a few people who were already members.

What did you expect the Club to be like?

Jean T: I thought there would be lots to do and there was ...bowling, dancing...and more Anne: I didn’t have any preconceived ideas as I hadn’t belonged to a club before Derek: My expectations of the Club were as I thought, warm and friendly.

Sarah and Tom: We thought it would be like One Foot In The Grave!

Ann: I expected people to be sat around but it is nothing like that Ron and Joan: We expected the club to have some limitations, like sky diving!

Jeff: It looked and sounded like a very friendly club and I was right!

Irving: I expected it to be full of old people but found that was not the case as it was quite active

igel first starred as Terry Duckworth in Coronation Street, before leaving to pursue other acting roles and a new career in journalism and documentary making. He helped us to make our Boddan Lodge Forever video.* Here we put some of our, members’ questions to Nigel...

Do you answer to ‘Terry’ when people shout at you in the street?

“I used to get cheesed off with this but thankfully it happens less these days.

However I realised some years ago that if some random stranger wants to shout ‘TERRY’! at the top of their voice then that is their choice and who I am I to disappoint. So, unless I am in a really bad mood I will reply ‘Hello mate/alright love’ and quickly hurry on my way. As many of you will no doubt concur as one gets more mature it is wiser to roll with the punches rather than make an issue about every point.”

What’s your best job since Coro?

“I have had some lovely jobs and some awful ones for all sorts of reasons. As far as acting is concerned I think the stand out jobs were in theatre, where you do the real acting. There are few, if any, hiding places on stage and for me getting a play, rehearsing it for three weeks and playing it for four by which time you should be flying in the role, was great.

“So, the best maybe was at the Palace Theatre, Westcliffe in ‘View from a Bridge’

by Arthur Miller. Everything came together - a nice cast, great play, lovely old theatre and by the seaside in the summer. I have had much bigger pay days; adverts, bigger achievements, Fringe first winner Edinburgh and bigger audiences like at the Liverpool Empire but that four months stands out.

Is your chippy still there?

“The one we used to own on Pendlebury Road is still there.”

Which school did you go to?

“Saint Charles, Saint Johns, Saint Charles again, Saint Patricks and Saint Ambrose Barlow - an obvious educational choice for an observant Jewish kid!”

What’s the best thing about getting old?

“Youngster’s stepping in to pick things up off the floor on one’s behalf, even though there is no need.”

What’s the worst thing about getting old?

“That the daft buggers think that you can’t do it for yourself anyway.”

Favourite toy when you were a lad?

“A pedal fire chief car that I probably carried more than pedalled, later supplanted by a Webley air pistol.”

What is the best thing that could happen to Salford?

“That we got something like the Docks back again, whether it be a new port or something equally big and iconic that gave the city a unique identity, and massive employment opportunities both direct and indirect. And a sense of pride.”

How did you get into Coro St? What is your recipe for a love potion?

“The casting people saw me in a play in London and asked could I go and audition for Curly Watts. I did and was shortlisted but the part went to Kevin Kennedy. They were so impressed with the cohort of male actors seen for Curly, however, that they decided to create the character of Terry which obviously became mine.”

Favourite place in Salford?

“Irlam Wharf where ships still berth and discharge on the Ship Canal, and Peel Park Museum where I first visited as a kid with my nanna in the sixties.

“Saw Palmetto, Catuaba, Damiana tinctures, five mills of each, every morning should keep you healthy down there. But ultimately sex is all in the mind. Which is where it is mostly for me these days...” *See the Boddan Lodge Forever video on the Boddan Lodge You Tube Channel

Dear Wendy Aren’t we all looking for love? You can take up line dancing at Boddan Lodge (Thursday evenings from 7:30pm) as you don’t need a partner, or, if you prefer, bowling (Thursday from 1pm and Tuesday from 2pm), as you can also come on your own. You should also go to places where you went with your partner as people will know you and look after you, maybe even ask for a date. You also have to go where there will be lots of single people – funerals are great for this! Church or other places of worship are also good. Failing that, evening classes? Or get involved in politics. Climate is a great cause and you could even superglue yourself to a bank to meet someone wealthy while you’re saving the planet!

Follow these easy steps and your life will be your own again – and you’ll still be awake for Saturday night whist at Boddan Lodge at 7pm!

How about going to Boddan Lodge and trying keep fit (Monday from 10:30am) or sequence dancing (Wednesday from 10am), or sourcing a local yoga class? Or what about getting a dog that will take you for a walk twice a day!

Boddan Lodge A bit of history...

The Club was founded by the Lord Mayor of Salford, Mrs Boddan, as one of her charities for the use of ‘over sixties people of Salford’, for a meeting place for retirement. The Club has been run by a committee and volunteers for fifty years as an active club.

The building and grounds belong to Monton Unitarian Church, and leased to Salford Council. In 2019 the Club was in danger of closing, but following a protest at the Civic Centre and subsequent meetings with Salford Council, a three year extension was agreed to give the group time to draw up a new business plan, diversify its membership, apply for further funding and get into a secure financial position. After three years the group will take on the lease with the Church.
