Fliers flock in to Aero Club fly-in

CRAIG WINTER

SIXTY SEVEN pilots and their guests from around the region flew into Maryborough last Sunday to help celebrate the launch of the Maryborough Military Aviation Museum.

Hosted by the Maryborough Aero Club, the visitors took advantage of perfect weather to explore the city and have breakfast with old friends.

Aero Club President John Rubidge hailed the day as a great success.

“Fly-ins help promote Maryborough and the services at the airport.” he said.

“Our Club has some of the best facilities in Queensland, and we love the chance to show them off during social days.”

“Pilots enjoy the catch up and the opportunity meet new friends with similar interests.”

There are around 100 members of the Maryborough Aero Club, and several dozen aircraft on site, most flown regularly.

The Club was formed in 1931 as the Wide Bay Burnett Aero Club, hosting such luminaries as Bert Hinkler and Sir Charles Kingsford Smith who became patron of the Club.

The present club building was purchased for 200 pounds from the RAAF in November 1946.

Members meet on the second Thursday of each month at 6.30pm and are on site in the Clubrooms at the airport most Saturdays.
