Dear Friends,

I recently attended a meeting where everyone was asked to visualize their cancer patient and place them in the center of the room. Who are you fighting for? Who will you let guide your tough decisions and be your compass? I’ve never been in a more productive, emotional, motivating meeting in my five years as a Cancer Center team member.

For me, it was my grandfather who lost his personal battle in 2010. It was my aunt whose journey ended in 2011. It was a close family friend who lost her courageous fight in 2013 much too young.

Our hours are long; the challenges are great; the losses are painful. Their memories drive me to do more and to be better. I can think of no greater profession or anything I would rather be doing!

For everyone we’ve lost, so many more are surviving and thriving through their cancer journeys because of your generosity. Your commitment is helping save and extend the lives of so many who hear the words “you have cancer.” Your impact this past year was felt by more cancer patients than any other cancer center in the region; thank you.

A YEAR TO REMEMBER

Last year at the Cancer Center, more than 1,500 new patients were treated and nearly 2,000 people were served through our outreach program. In addition, research expanded with over 23 open clinical trials, 25 active medical physics research projects and 14 papers published in peer-reviewed journals.

YOUR GIFT. YOUR IMPACT. TOGETHER, WE ARE MAKING A DIFFERENCE… IN PREVENTION Early detection is saving lives screening over 1,450 people for five types of cancer and making a remarkable impact in our community.

Because lung cancer is the most common cause of cancer deaths in Louisiana, we established a Lung Cancer Screening Program.

Your gift made a difference: Cindy, 56, attended a free screening to appease her friend’s concerns. Her early stage cancer was detected in a parking lot via the Cancer Center’s Early Bird mobile clinic.

Through your dedication and support, we are able to diagnose cancer in its earlier stages.

IN RESEARCH As a recipient of the NCORP Grant, in collaboration with LSU-New Orleans and LSU Health Sciences Center-Shreveport, Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center at TGMC is bringing more clinical trials to the Bayou region. The cancer collaborative was awarded $5.6 million over five years, which will make a significant impact on cancer-related health disparities.

Your gift made a difference: Currently enrolled in a clinical trial, Grace was able to see her first great-grandchild born.

Together, with dedication and resolve, we will continue to fight cancer through translational research.

IN SURVIVORSHIP The Cancer Center is building a comprehensive Survivorship Program that helps guide patients from time of diagnosis, throughout treatment to survivorship.

Donors made patient navigation available to every patient at the Cancer Center.

Our Palliative Care Program offers patients invaluable year-round support.

Your gift made a difference: Kendra’s social worker was able to be with her every step of the way through her cancer journey.

Because of you, we are able to surround our patients with more support services than any cancer program in the Bayou Region.

IN INNOVATION Our Cancer Center is in the process of implementing new MRI technology that will help diagnose patients at an earlier stage.

Your gift made a difference: At the time of her diagnosis, Carol, a 64-year-old grandmother, underwent radiation therapy using the state-of-the-art Elekta Infinity Linear Accelerator, which resulted in less treatment side effects, and she was able to watch her grandchildren grow up.

Your support allows us to invest in technology and research that improves the care of patients throughout our service area and beyond.

IN TEAMWORK Our Multidisciplinary Care Team is composed of experts in cancers that affect our community the most, particularly lung cancer.

Each patient at the Cancer Center receives specialized, personalized cancer care, right here at home.

Your gift made a difference: Todd underwent concurrent treatment. Both his medical oncologist and radiation oncologist were in the same building making it easy to not only communicate, but to provide a personalized treatment plan.

IN PATIENT ASSISTANCE Patient support includes transportation assistance, nutritional supplements and supportive care for patients, caregivers and their families. Your gift made a difference: After his initial treatment, Donald knew he would have to change his diet and eating patterns. A registered dietitian was available to help guide him and offer support.

A HIGH-FLYING MESSENGER OF HOPE AND RENEWAL Upon entering Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center at TGMC, patients and visitors are welcomed by a larger-than-life message of hope and recovery perched high above the Center’s soaring entryway – the butterfly mobile, a 30-foot-high by 17-foot-wide, free-flying work of art. The mobile, a one-of-a-kind structure, serves as a reminder of the power of metamorphosis. As the butterfly is symbolic of transformation, strength and profound change in life, the piece serves as an inspiring reminder for all those who visit the Cancer Center.
