IMPACT REPORT
OUR MISSION TO IMPROVE SURVIVORSHIP AND LESSEN THE BURDEN OF CANCER
We provide the full spectrum of cancer care, from prevention and early detection to diagnosis, treatment, survivorship and palliative care.
Dear Friends,
I recently attended a meeting where everyone was asked to visualize their cancer patient and place them in the center of the room. Who are you fighting for? Who will you let guide your tough decisions and be your compass? I’ve never been in a more productive, emotional, motivating meeting in my five years as a Cancer Center team member.
For me, it was my grandfather who lost his personal battle in 2010. It was my aunt whose journey ended in 2011. It was a close family friend who lost her courageous fight in 2013 much too young.
Our hours are long; the challenges are great; the losses are painful. Their memories drive me to do more and to be better. I can think of no greater profession or anything I would rather be doing!
For everyone we’ve lost, so many more are surviving and thriving through their cancer journeys because of your generosity. Your commitment is helping save and extend the lives of so many who hear the words “you have cancer.” Your impact this past year was felt by more cancer patients than any other cancer center in the region; thank you.
Who is your cancer patient? Who are you fighting for? How will you continue to make an impact?
I’m humbled by all you do,
ETHAN J. BUSH
Vice President/Chief Development Officer
P.S.: Whatever 2015 brings your way, make time to enjoy the truly important things in life – connecting to those we love!

INVESTMENT
A L O O K AT OUR PROGRESS
Your investment is making a difference in our pursuit of becoming the regional cancer center on the Northshore. Every gift directly impacts our patients, our families and our community. We are surrounding every patient with advanced treatment and more support programs and services than any other cancer care organization in the area. Through your generosity, we are preventing more cancers and saving and extending more lives than ever before. We are only as strong as the support we receive from the communities we serve. Simply put, your 2014 gift helped support thousands of people fighting for their lives, close to home.

IMPACT
A YEAR TO REMEMBER
Last year at the Cancer Center, more than 1,200 new patients were treated and nearly 2,500 people were served through our outreach program. In addition, research expanded with over 30 open clinical trials, 25 active medical physics research projects and 14 papers published in peer-reviewed journals.
YOUR GIFT. YOUR IMPACT. TOGETHER, WE ARE MAKING A DIFFERENCE… IN PREVENTION Early detection is saving lives by screening nearly 1,000 people for five types of cancer and making a remarkable impact in our community. In 2014, over 20% of people screened were subsequently navigated due to an abnormal finding. Because lung cancer is the most common cause of cancer deaths in Louisiana, we established a Lung MDC Team. Your gift made a difference: Cindy, 56, attended a free screening to appease her friend’s concerns. Her early stage cancer was detected in a parking lot in Bogalusa via the Cancer Center’s Early Bird mobile clinic. Through your dedication and support, we are able to diagnose cancer in its earliest stages.
IN RESEARCH As a recipient of the NCORP Grant, in collaboration with LSU-New Orleans and LSU Health Sciences Center-Shreveport, Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center at St. Tammany Parish Hospital will bring more clinical trials to the Gulf South Region. The cancer collaborative was awarded $5.6 million over five years, which will make a significant impact on cancer-related health disparities. Your gift made a difference: Currently enrolled in a clinical trial, Grace was able to see her first great-grandchild born. Together, with dedication and resolve, we will continue to fight cancer through translational research.

IN SURVIVORSHIP The Cancer Center introduced integrative medicine through yoga, tai chi and pet therapy. Donors made patient navigation available to every patient at the Cancer Center. We now offer “Fighting with your Fork” nutrition classes to patients and their caregivers. Led by the Center dietitian, the classes teach the power of nutrition in health and healing. Genetic testing, counseling and assessment services are available by referral for those who have an increased risk for hereditary cancer, helping patients make informed medical decisions. Each year we celebrate with past patients and caregivers the success of their cancer journey with a Survivor’s Day Picnic, serving over 500 guests. Your gift made a difference: David, who attends a monthly support group, says it serves as a life line for him and his wife while going through treatment. He not only receives encouragement from attending but also provides words of wisdom to other patients. Because of you, we are able to surround our patients with more support services than any cancer care program on the Northshore.
IN INNOVATION The Cancer Center is the only facility in the region to offer the Elekta Radiotherapy system, a pioneering cancer-fighting technology that is setting new standards for speed and precision. Your gift made a difference: Brigitte, a 24 year-old mother at the time of her diagnosis, underwent an additional innovative treatment option using brachytherapy with successful results. Your support allows us to invest in technology and research that improves the care of patients at home in our service area and beyond.
IN TEAMWORK Our Lung Multidisciplinary Care Team is composed of experts on the Northshore focused on bringing their physician specialty to the treatment plan of the patient. Each patient at the Cancer Center receives specialized, personalized cancer care, close to home and family. Your gift made a difference: Todd underwent concurrent treatment. Both his medical oncologist and radiation oncologist were in the same building, making it easy to not only communicate, but to have all expectations met in one central location. Your gifts are bringing advanced care through expert oncology teams to our community.
IN PATIENT ASSISTANCE Patient support includes transportation assistance, nutritional supplements and supportive care for patients, caregivers and their families. Your gifts provide vital support to cancer patients when they need it most. Your Gift. Your Impact...Taking the Fight Forward in a meaningful way. Your gift made a difference: Bryan was traveling to and from the Cancer Center each day for about six weeks. His resources became limited from the cost of healthcare. Transportation was acting as barrier to care, so the Cancer Center quickly removed the barrier and offered Bryan assistance. Bryan also required a feeding tube, which our registered dietitian was instrumental in arranging for him. Your contributions are taking the fight forward for those facing barriers to treatment.

THE VICTORY BELL Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center at St. Tammany Parish Hospital’s victory bell gives cancer survivors a meaningful way to celebrate and share their progress. The “ringing of the bell” marks a significant moment – a point in time signaling the end of active treatment and the beginning of the next phase of their journey. Partners of Hope, our employee giving program, purchased the Cancer Center’s victory bell as a symbol of their investment and commitment to providing support not only for our patients to survive, but thrive. The now nationwide tradition was first introduced in 1996 at Houston’s MD Anderson Cancer Center when U.S. Navy Rear Admiral Irve Le Moyne, a patient with head and neck cancer, installed a brass bell at the center’s radiation treatment facility inscribed with the following lines: Ring this bell, Three times well, It’s toll to clearly say, my treatment’s done, This course is run, and I am on my way!
