April 2012 will mark completion of the Northshore’s newest integrated, comprehensive cancer center offering the full range of treatment modalities, a community milestone to include clinical trials of emerging cancer therapies. In 2011, Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center relocated radiation therapy services to its new location, the first floor of 1203 S. Tyler St., a new building in the Charles A. Frederick Jr. Medical Office Complex, attached to St. Tammany Parish Hospital’s main campus via skybridge. In April, St. Tammany Parish Hospital will complete its components of the expanded partnership with Mary Bird Perkins by relocating chemotherapy services, medical oncologists’ offices and cancer-related support services to the same building. The combined integrated Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center at St. Tammany Parish Hospital will celebrate with an Open House in June. This move will allow us to offer the full spectrum of care in one spot and enable patients to feel confident that all they need is available, and that they know exactly where to go. Patients and their support systems will have access to a dietician, social worker and patient navigator, to provide a supportive and integrative experience. The addition of a nurse expert in clinical trails will provide patients with access to cutting edge treatment. The STPH Cancer Resource Center will also move to the center in April, though many of the classes will remain at the Paul Cordes Outpatient Pavilion, including Tai Chi and Meditation. INCORPORATE RESTORATIVE YOGA INTO YOUR CANCER RECOVERY Fridays, weekly 10:00 - 11:00 a.m. Cordes Outpatient Pavilion , Covington Restorative yoga classes designed for those diagnosed with cancer & their caregivers. These classes are facilitated by Wendy McKee, RYT, Certified Yoga Instructor, & incorporate yoga techniques appropriate for anyone going through a cancer experience regardless of physical strength or abilities. The art of Tai Chi uses gentle flowing motion to reduce the stress of lifestyles or illness and improves health. Guided by Erlinda R. The American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life is a community event which allows individuals from all walks of life to join in the fight against cancer. The overnight event raises money and awareness while serving as a celebration for cancer survivors, a memorial for loved ones lost, and a rally for the community. Teams form from businesses, clubs, families, friends, hospitals, churches, schools and service organizations and each team can walk, jog or run on the track throughout the night. M EET THE N EW C ANCER C ONNECTION S UPPORT G ROUP FACILITATOR ... Mary Katherine Rodrique, PH. D. LPC, NCC is the Director of Survivorship for the Cancer Program of Mary Bird Perkins and St. Tammany Parish Hospital. She is a Licensed Professional Counselor and based on need, has established numerous support groups in the Southeast Louisiana area. Survivorship encompasses many aspects to those diagnosed with a cancer diagnosis AND their loved ones who cope with their own concerns related to a loved one’s diagnosis. A cancer support group allows positive interaction with others to work though similar concerns during and after a diagnosis.
