ADVANCING OUR IMPACT WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE THE DESTINATION CANCER CENTER FOR THE GULF SOUTH? We’re committed to extending and improving the lives of those diagnosed with cancer – seizing every opportunity to make a lasting impact, both across the country and in our own communities. Today, fewer than 1% of cancer patients leave Louisiana for cancer care. That means those who hear the words, “You have cancer,” are able to seek the most advanced treatment and supportive care right here at home.

PREVENTION ON THE GO

GETS GOING

Thanks to a $1 million transformational gift from the Albemarle Foundation, the Cancer Center’s successful screening and education program expanded to the workplace. In 2016, a pilot phase of the program was launched, with three companies — Albemarle Corporation, Lipsey’s and Forte and Tablada, Inc. — serving as test sites for their employees to participate. The program became fully operational in early 2017 with its first official workplace event at GMFS Mortgage on March 30, 2017.

TEAMWORK At the Cancer Center, close collaboration among the physicians and allied health professionals promotes the valuable and dynamic exchange of ideas, experiences and knowledge. Along with our navigators, nurses, nutritionists, clinical researchers and social workers, our Multidisciplinary Care (MDC) Teams continue to make strides advancing care in our community.

SURVIVORSHIP We’re building a national model for survivorship through supportive and integrative care so patients not only survive, but THRIVE. In 2016, we made strides toward furthering our impact on survivorship by developing several new initiatives and programs.

SURVIVORSHIP CLINIC

PALLIATIVE CARE CLINIC

FOSTERING HOPE

With a mind-body medicine approach, the appropriately named “After the Bell” survivorship clinic will help patients transition into survivors by assisting them in follow-up care, surveillance, quality of life and extension of life.

aton Rouge has the first and only B outpatient palliative care clinic in Louisiana, helping patients with pain management, psychosocial emotional support, shared decision-making, symptom management and home health.

We offer the only program in the country, partnered with Companion Animal Alliance, that pairs cancer survivors with homeless pets in order to leverage the far-reaching benefits of human-animal bonds and healing.

RESEARCH

INNOVATION

In 2016, the Cancer Center enrolled a record number of patients in clinical trials, which for many patients is the best way to receive the most advanced form of treatment. Through a National Cancer Institute Community Oncology Research Program (NCORP) grant, in collaboration with LSU Health Sciences Centers in New Orleans and Shreveport, we offer more advanced clinical trials, providing patients access to high-quality research studies closer to home.

With the help of our committed partners, we have continued to strengthen and advance our ability to provide the absolute highest standard of care to our patients. The Cancer Center has grown to become one of only a handful of American Institutes to offer a number of revolutionary technologies including the Gamma Knife Icon and 3-D printing technology.

GAMMA KNIFE ICON The Gamma Knife Icon is the only system of its kind in the Gulf South to offer the most precise and noninvasive treatment available in treating brain tumors and central nervous system disorders.

3-D PRINTING What became a nationally recognized research project in partnership with LSU, now helps our medical teams identify and isolate tumors using mannequins, or phantoms, of patients undergoing radiation.

MOMENTS WORTH

FAVRE FAMILY AWARD FOR

INNOVATION Last year, philanthropist Art Favre made a $1 million investment to help the Cancer Center pioneer innovative solutions that impact cancer care. Because of Mr. Favre’s belief in the Cancer Center’s ability to make an impact, he earmarked a percentage of his gift each year to fund original project ideas submitted by Cancer Center team members that will enhance care for our patients and cancer patients around the world. Numerous applications were submitted across multiple departments. While Connel Chu, medical physicist, is the inaugural winner, four additional projects are also moving forward thanks to more funding. The award spurred creativity across our network – teamwork and innovation at its finest!

Partners of Hope – the Cancer Center’s team member giving program – helps ensure patients and their families have the essential services they need to find, treat and defeat cancer. This year, 85% of employees generously donated to Partners of Hope to help further our mission and provide more support services for patients across the continuum of care.

HAVE FUN SAVE LIVES

GEAUX GIVE Companies, organizations and individuals everywhere are turning activities they enjoy into fundraisers for the Cancer Center. Whether it’s a company golf tournament, lemonade stand, school dress day or cooking contest, every dollar raised supports cancer patients in our community.

Each year we are amazed at the organizations and individuals who come together in displays of generosity and joyous compassion to join the fight against cancer – from attending and sponsoring signature events to hosting their own third party events. With the Cancer Center’s 100% Fundraising Efficiency, every dollar raised goes directly to supporting our patients and advancing quality of care.

Volunteers have been the lifeblood of the Cancer Center since its beginning, and to this day, volunteers like Bob and Bev Jones prove that tradition lives on. Every volunteer’s role is important to what we do; every contribution, on every level, improves survivorship and lessens the burden of cancer. Their selfless compassion impacts every patient and family member who walks through our doors. Yours could too.
