T

he Grand Opening of Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center at TGMC this fall represents delivery on a promise made in 2008 to the people of Terrebonne Parish and adjoining communities to meet a vital need – local access to high-quality, comprehensive cancer care for residents of the Bayou Region.

The opening of this spectacular new facility is certainly something to celebrate. But the real accomplishment is that even more can be done to help cancer patients now. This has provided an opportunity to enhance the patient experience by providing streamlined and coordinated care all in one modern building with additional, advanced resources to better serve those in need.

Thank you to everyone who had a hand in this extraordinary initiative. How fitting in Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center’s 40th anniversary year to open the doors to a new facility that provides local access to high quality care.

Longtime leader of the medical physics partnership between LSU and Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center, Dr. Kenneth Hogstrom, has retired after playing a pivotal role in its development and expansion. We are extremely grateful for Dr. Hogstrom’s tremendous contributions while at the same time delighted to welcome Wayne Newhauser, Ph.D. whose leadership will help the partnership continue to flourish.

Houma Celebrates Grand Opening of Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center at TGMC

The new state-of-the-art Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center at TGMC facility opened its doors to the community in October, expanding the Center’s comprehensive services in the Bayou Region.

O

pening the new Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center is an important milestone in a partnership with the Terrebonne General Medical Center (TGMC) that began three years ago. In 2008, Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center formed a partnership with the hospital and Cancer Care Specialists. Each party had one goal in mind: to offer residents of the Bayou Region a comprehensive cancer center, close to home.

Since then, Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center at TGMC has grown and evolved to meet the needs of the community, but its mission has remained the same: to improve survivorship and lessen the burden of cancer.

This mission is especially important in Louisiana – a state that suffers from high cancer mortality rates due to lack of access to care, delayed diagnosis and other factors.

“With the new Center, we hope to provide not only the very best in cancer treatment, but to also demonstrate our commitment to creating a healthier community,” said Phyllis Peoples, president and CEO of TGMC. “With this facility comes a full service program with support for both the patient and family, education and screening initiatives at no cost to the underserved community as well as the latest in technology and expertise of the very best doctors in the region.”

As a comprehensive cancer facility, Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center at TGMC provides the full continuum of cancer care – from prevention and early detection to diagnosis, treatment, recovery and survivorship.

The Center’s services include screening, mammography, education, chemotherapy, radiation therapy and surgery. Clinical trials and patient navigators – nurses who guide patients through the treatment process – are available as well.

The Center is nationally accredited with commendation and recognized for excellence in cancer care by the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer (CoC) – the gold standard for community-based cancer care. The multidisciplinary cancer program offers immediate access to a wealth of technology and clinical expertise for the Houma community and the greater Bayou Region.

The Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center at TGMC offers free cancer screenings, community education and support opportunities for cancer patients throughout the year. Residents of the Bayou Region can also get free cancer screenings though the Early Bird, a mobile medical clinic that helps bring early detection to the uninsured at times and locations that are convenient.

“We know that patients who have local access to care do better when surrounded by family and friends,” said Donna Saurage, chair of the Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center Board of Directors. “Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center at TGMC makes this possible by bringing expert cancer care close to home.”

The new center – constructed by the McDonnel Group – is also the first building in the region and the first hospital in Louisiana to earn Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver certification.

And while these achievements are something to celebrate, the real focus of the new Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center at TGMC is the patient.

Volunteer Spotlight Making Bracelets for Breast Cancer Survivors

W

ith a few pink beads, some thread and a touch of care, Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center volunteer Meena Gangula brings smiles to the faces of breast cancer survivors with her handcrafted bracelets. Gangula, a native of India who began volunteering at Mary Bird Perkins just a few months ago, recently began making and giving homemade bracelets to breast cancer patients on their final day of treatment. The bracelets are made of pink, pearl and metal beading, complete with a breast cancer awareness ribbon.

“We are here today to celebrate the past 13 years and look forward to a new and exciting horizon in cancer care for this community as we work to strengthen and deepen our partnership with St. Tammany Parish Hospital,” said Vickie Hall, Chief of Radiation Oncology, MBPCC. The doors to the original Covington Center opened on August 31, 1998.

n August 31, staff members from Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center in Baton Rouge celebrated the organization’s 40th birthday with cupcakes, punch and plenty of storytelling. The Baton Rouge Center began treating its first patient in August 1971.

Spreading the Word Through Outreach

T

he Cancer Program of Our Lady of the Lake and Mary Bird Perkins recently partnered with the Baton Rouge Sigma Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Together, the partners sponsored two successful educational events aimed at educating women about cancer. The events were part of the annual Women’s Week Celebration led by the Greater Baton Rouge Women’s Council.

Dr. Duane Superneau presented "Cancer--Whose Genes Are You Wearing?" at Southern University. More than 180 people participated in the program. Dr. Superneau, a clinical geneticist, discussed how genes may affect the risk of developing certain types of cancers and when, why and who should consider genetic testing.

Leigh Anne Kamerman presented "Lemonade and Cancer" at Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center.

Kamerman discussed how one-third of all cancers are due to nutrition and physical factors, including excess weight. The dialogue consisted of tips on healthy eating and the tools necessary to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Guests enjoyed complimentary lunch and lemonade.

Stopping the Habit Before it Begins MDC Teams Provide Tobacco Education to Students

A

lmost ninety percent of adult smokers begin smoking at or before age eighteen, and daily smoking most often begins in grades six through nine, according to the National Household Surveys on Drug Abuse. Because of these statistics, it is clear that reaching middle school students with information on the dangers of tobacco usage is important. Three East Baton Rouge (EBR) Parish Public Schools were provided with lifelike models and information depicting the toll tobacco use can take on the body. The Cancer Program of Our Lady of the Lake and Mary Bird Perkins’ Head, Neck and Lung Multidisciplinary Care (MDC) Teams provided the education materials with funding from the Our Lady of the Lake Foundation. With items such as “Mr. Gross Mouth” and “Fat Furred Artery,” the hope is to make a dramatic statement to the students that tobacco use is dangerous.

“For this effort, our MDC teams wanted to get in front of the issue instead of the cessation part after the fact. If kids never begin smoking, they never have to quit. And when the Foundation

Barbershop Screening Targets Underserved Webb’s Barbershop, a fixture in the Baton Rouge community for many years, and The Cancer Program of Our Lady of the Lake and Mary Bird Perkins, once again partnered for the annual prostate screening event in September. More than 60% of men screened were uninsured and 47% did not have a primary care provider. More than 50 men were screened for cancer at no cost as a part of the Cancer Program's efforts for National Prostate Cancer Awareness Month.

Hogstrom Honored New Medical Physics Leadership Welcomed

I

n October, a crowd gathered for a retirement reception at the LSU Faculty Club in honor of Kenneth R. Hogstrom, Ph.D. The event, co-hosted by the LSU Department of Physics & Astronomy and Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center, recognized Dr. Hogstrom for seven dedicated years of teaching, research, service and leadership with the Mary Bird Perkins–LSU Medical Physics Program. During that time, he held the titles of Professor and Director, LSU Medical Physics and Health Physics Program; Dr. Charles M. Smith Chair of Medial Physics, Louisiana State University; and Chief of Physics, Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center. Dr. Hogstrom is now being appointed Professor Emeritus at LSU.

“During Dr. Hogstrom’s tenure, his handson teaching style raised the bar in medical physics education at LSU’s flagship university.”

Dr. Wayne Newhauser, who has degrees in nuclear engineering and medical physics from the University of Wisconsin, is the newly appointed chief of physics at Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center and Dr. Charles M. Smith Chair of Medical Physics at LSU. He is one of the world’s leading medical physics scholars in proton therapy physics. Previously, he held appointments at the Harvard Medical School and The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center at Houston.

“Dr. Newhauser’s outstanding research and scholarly credentials make him an excellent choice to continue and build upon Dr. Hogstrom’s legacy,” said Kevin Carman, dean, LSU College of Science and member, Board of Directors, MBPCC.

St. Tammany Cancer Fund Provides Transportation Help

T

he St. Tammany Cancer Fund has continued its commitment to supporting cancer patients through a 2011 grant award of $20,000 to purchase gas cards to help underresourced patients get to treatment appointments. Many patients treated at The Cancer Program of Mary Bird Perkins and St. Tammany Parish Hospital are older patients living on a fixed income. Other patients are unable to work during treatment and are struggling financially.

“We greatly appreciate the continued support of the St. Tammany Cancer Fund and its generous donation to help provide reliable, consistent transportation for under-resourced cancer patients,” said Leslie Landry, Director of Development, The Cancer Program of Mary Bird Perkins and St. Tammany Parish Hospital.

Both radiation oncology and medical oncology patients who are being treated by The Cancer Program are eligible to receive this needs-based transportation assistance because of the absolute necessity to maintain the treatment regimen outlined in the treatment plan.

Celebrating Life! In South Louisiana – A Great Success

T

he Florida Parishes Arena was the site of “Celebrating Life in South Louisiana” to benefit Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center. This inaugural event was an astounding success, raising more than $6,000 toward the fight against cancer. The fun evening included a poker run, silent auction, great array of Louisiana food and a live chicken drop. Featured entertainment was provided by the Louisiana Hot Sauce Band, The Dominos and DJ Bayou Wolfman.

Lighting the Night for Cancer Patients

T

he Cancer Program of Our Lady of the Lake and Mary Bird Perkins sponsored the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s Light the Night walk at LSU in September. With pictures and profiles of those who lost their battle to Leukemia and Lymphoma posted along the walking path around the LSU lakes, the peaceful evening walk was a simple reminder of why it continues to be important to raise awareness and funds to fight this disease.

More People are Ready to Quit Tobacco Cessation Program Exceeds National Quit Rates

T

he Cancer Program of Our Lady of the Lake and Mary Bird Perkins is making strong headway in helping cancer patients kick the tobacco habit. Since October 2010, Ready to Quit?, a one-on-one inpatient tobacco cessation counseling program for cancer patients, has helped 43% of those enrolled quit using tobacco.

These statistics are outstanding when you consider the national average quit rate for personto-person counseling is 25.5%.

The Cancer Program created Ready to Quit? for patients who are identified as a tobacco user during hospital admission and those referred from medical and radiation oncology nurses, doctors, social workers, patient navigators and dieticians. Since the program began, The Cancer Program has screened 256 patients for Ready to Quit? and of those screened, 100 of those patients chose to enroll.

The Cancer Program offers this service as a free resource to help cancer patients who want to quit using tobacco. Family members or persons living with patients who are exposing them to secondhand smoke are also eligible to receive counseling at no cost.

Hammond Center Supports Relay for Life

T

eams started arriving around 6:30 a.m. on Saturday, November 12 for the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life in Hammond.

Held at North Oak Park, just north of the Southeastern Louisiana University campus, the event officially kicked off at 10 a.m. with the Survivors Lap and concluded at dusk with the Luminaria Memorial.

According to the National Cancer Institute, one of the many benefits of quitting for cancer patients is that it improves the body’s ability to heal and respond to cancer treatment. The most important benefit is its impact on survival. Numerous studies have shown that people who quit using tobacco have better survival rates versus those persons who continue to use tobacco.

NCI Community Cancer Centers The Cancer Program of Our Lady of the Lake and Mary Bird Perkins

Tomorrow’s Cancer Care – Right Here, Right Now. For the fourth year, The Cancer Program of Our Lady of the Lake and Mary Bird Perkins is helping to create a national standard for community cancer care. Through the National Cancer Institute (NCI) Community Cancer Centers Program (NCCCP), 30 competitively chosen hospitals are working to bring the latest scientific advances and evidence-based care within easy reach for cancer patients in underserved rural, suburban and inner-city locations across the United States.

NCI launched the NCCCP pilot program in 2007 as a public-private partnership with 16 community hospitals, including The Cancer Program for Our Lady of the Lake and Mary Bird Perkins. In 2010, NCI expanded the network with stimulus funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) and added 14 more sites.

In addition, a $2 million grant from ARRA is funding 14 projects for The Cancer Program of Our Lady of the Lake and Mary Bird Perkins through April 2012. The objective of the initiative is make cancer prevention and care available to all and with a focus on disparate populations.

NCCCP Focus Areas NCCCP sites are working to achieve the program’s goals of: • Enhancing access to care • Improving the quality of care • Expanding research Reducing Cancer Healthcare Disparities The Cancer Program’s success in reaching underserved Vietnamese and Hispanic populations increased significantly through the efforts of our two bilingual community outreach coordinators. Each coordinator speaks their native language, Vietnamese and Spanish, and works within their respective cultures to provide early detection and screening information. This includes visiting churches and businesses, establishing media relationships and engaging civic organizations. Of the minorities served in NCCCP Year Four, 11% were Asian and 11% were Hispanic.

The Cancer Program now has a tool to ensure we are reaching our target audience of underserved minorities. We have developed an Early Detection Screening and Patient Navigation Database, a powerful program that accurately and efficiently tracks, measures and creates reports on our screening and navigation patients. This helps the Cancer Program make more strategic and informed decisions based on real-time data. Results show that 34% of all patients screened during NCCCP Year Four were minorities.

Prioritizing Underserved Accrual to Clinical Trials The Cancer Program’s Clinical Trials Program has launched initiatives to enhance underserved accrual to clinical trials.

An outreach program is helping to increase primary care physicians’ awareness of national clinical trials in their local communities. To date, 42 primary care physician clinics have been visited—27 located in rural communities. Physician outreach statistics show that 52% were defined as rural and 37% were African American, Hispanic or Asian. Based on additional NCCCP factors, 17% of the outreach population is considered minority.

Adding an early phase clinical trials program has improved access to new advances and provided more options for the treatment of cancer. Additionally, a clinical research advisory council was established to promote research awareness among patients and providers within our 11 parish service area. Additional clinical research staffing was added at Earl K. Long Medical Center, which includes a research navigator to assist potential and current research patients. Through each of these efforts, Year Four underserved patient accruals for clinical trials included 26% African American, 50% elderly and 57% rural patients.

Program: July 2010 - June 2011 Promoting Evidence-based Care As a complement to our four multidisciplinary teams, our patient navigators assist colorectal, brain, head and neck and lung patients through the treatment process. Since the program began in July 2010, 314 patients have been navigated.

The role of our patient navigators is to provide educational resources, answer questions, facilitate appointments and help guide patients and their families through the difficult journey of cancer care. If there are issues or challenges that might interfere with a patient receiving treatment, navigators work to help resolve those problems, so timely care can be delivered. Navigators can help address lack of transportation, language barriers, difficulties with reading or understanding printed materials or family/financial constraints.

Expanding Survivorship and Palliative Care Programs The Cancer Program has launched a survivorship program and hired a full-time survivorship navigator as a supplement to our multidisciplinary care teams. Patients may enroll after completing active treatment. The program offers psychosocial resources and referrals, as well as information regarding follow-up care and patient education. Just as other navigators guided patients through diagnosis and treatment, the survivorship navigator guides patients along the way as they enter this newest phase of their cancer journey.

Palliative Care is a relatively new and growing specialty. It helps patients attain the highest possible quality of life by focusing on relieving pain, other symptoms and stresses of cancer or other serious illness. Unlike hospice patients, individuals enrolled in palliative care are not necessarily terminal. The Cancer Program’s palliative care service has expanded to include a nurse practitioner assigned specifically to the inpatient oncology unit. As a result, palliative care referrals have increased 62% over the prior year. Increased palliative care referrals may also be attributed to continuing education, increased awareness and understanding of palliative care, collaboration with oncologists and other healthcare providers and increased accessibility.

Implementing Information Technology We continue to enhance quality and service by storing data in a secure, centralized database for departments such as Patient Navigation, Survivorship, Palliative Care, Total Cancer Care® and Clinical Trials. Through this centralized database, each patient’s cancer experience across the entire continuum is documented and viewable. Having access to this information helps us to better customize treatments, support services and patient and family needs. Other NCCCP sites have expressed interest in utilizing this tool in their locations, and we are committed to helping other sites as they deploy this technology.

Promoting High Quality Biospecimen Collection To advance cancer research, the Cancer Program is actively participating in the collection of high-quality biospecimens using standardized collection and storage procedures. This endeavor helps to build a community-based research platform in which patient data and high-quality tissue samples are collected to support personalized medicine. As a top-performing partner with Moffitt Cancer Center’s Total Cancer Care (TCC®) program, the Cancer Program collected more than 900 specimens during Year Four. Since TCC’s® inception in June 2008, more than 1,700 patients have consented to participate in the program. These successful statistics are a result of staff members’ hands-on approach to specimen collection and patient screening methods.

he second annual Benefits of Home Gala was a recordbreaking success. Hosted by Northwestern Mutual of Louisiana and HUB International Gulf South (formerly SEBS of Louisiana), the Gala raised $65,000 for The Cancer Program of Mary Bird Perkins and St. Tammany Parish Hospital. More than Northshore President's Council attends Benefits of Home Gala.

200 people attended the event held in August at the Fleur de Lis Center in Mandeville with entertainment provided by No Idea.

Sisters Grateful for Hammond Center

S

iblings Suzette Kepner and Tonya Graves are grateful for just about everything.

They even see a positive side to each having had breast cancer. “Cancer teaches you to appreciate every little thing. It changes your life for the better," said younger sister Graves who went through treatment in 2003 when she was only 36 years old.

“We’re so blessed to have Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center in Hammond just minutes down the road,” said Graves. “The first time I went there I knew it was the right place for me. I just felt the love.” It was very important to Graves to be in a friendly, welcoming environment. “Everyone had smiles on their faces and talked to me – from the receptionist right on down the line. I had this whole amazing support team on my side.”

Kepner, diagnosed in 2006 at the age of 50, said it was important to her to go through treatment close to home, near her family. “It took 18 years for my husband and me to have our only child, and I wanted them nearby.” She said she would take her son to school, head to the Center for radiation treatment, go to work and then pick her child up after school. “It was a perfect situation for me and I am so grateful for that,” said Kepner, adding, “The precision of the scheduling was amazing. I was always treated on time.”

Graves, who later developed lymphedema in her left arm, is also grateful for the free lymphedema education classes Mary Bird Perkins offers. “There’s a lot to learn about the aftereffects of breast cancer treatment, and they follow-up on that, too.”

LSUHSC and Mary Bird Perkins Receive $393,000 to Study Young Breast Cancer Survivorship

U

ntil recently, the nation has tailored a majority of survivorship programming for breast cancer patients to meet the needs of women over age 50, who represent the largest age-group of those treated for breast cancer. In reality, young breast cancer survivors, those under age 45, have unique issues that do not often figure into many breast cancer support programs. These issues include fertility, dating, building a career, body image, and a long lifetime of treatment side effects and surveillance. Although fewer women are under age 45 when they are diagnosed with breast cancer, a higher percentage do not survive five years after diagnosis. Because national guidelines don't recommend an annual mammogram for women until they are 45, most younger women only find their tumors after they develop symptoms.

In an effort to expand the knowledge and skills of clinicians and practitioners who treat and support young breast cancer survivors, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has awarded six three-year grants to create and evaluate young breast cancer survivorship programs. The Louisiana Comprehensive Cancer Control

Partnership, administered by Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center (LSUHSC), has joined with Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center and its partners in a three-year grant award to define “best practices” in survivorship programming for young breast cancer survivors.

The partnership with LSUHSC and CDC will allow Mary Bird's partners, such as the Cancer Program of Our Lady of the Lake and Mary Bird Perkins to offer a more in-depth approach to physical and emotional issues affecting young adult breast cancer patients in survivorship. The plan is to also create a valuable networking experience for these patients to form a supportive bond that can be facilitated and sustained through internal seminars, complimentary therapies, and collaborative community events. Expect to hear more about this new project in 2012.

Scores Big in Houma

T

he first ever Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center at TGMC Open was held September 26 – October 1 at Ellendale Country Club in Houma. As the city’s only professional golf tournament, the week-long event featured plenty of opportunities for the Bayou Region community to get involved in the fight against cancer.

On Monday, September 26, the Taste of the Tournament Par-Tee and Auction took place at Ellendale and included local Cajun cuisine, music and a silent auction. The Capital One Pro-Am teed off on Tuesday, September 27 in the form of a four-man shamble. Each team included three amateur golfers and an Adams Golf Pro Tour Series professional player.

Junior Clinic at the Mary Bird Perkins at TGMC Open

From Wednesday, September 28 through Saturday, October 1, the Mary Bird Perkins at TGMC Open professional tournament was a hit – featuring Adams Pro Golf Tour Series players. Shawn Jasper, from Missouri, won the tournament after a 3-hole playoff.

Kids joined in as well and learned from the pros at a free junior clinic on Thursday, September 29.

All proceeds benefited Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center at TGMC and the local fight against cancer. Save the date for the 2nd annual Mary Bird Perkins at TGMC Open, scheduled for April 2-7, 2012.

Rathbone Society Members Honored

ary Bird Perkins Cancer Center’s (MBPCC) annual Rathbone Society Dinner recognizes the organization’s most loyal donors and provides a venue to thank them for their incredible generosity. This year’s event, held in September at the Hilton Baton Rouge Capitol Center, was the final celebration of Mary Bird Perkins’ 40th anniversary year.

“Tonight we celebrate you, your commitment to the fight against cancer and the difference you have made in countless lives,” Todd Stevens, CEO and president, MBPCC, told the more than 150 Rathbone Society donors present.

MBPCC Board Chair, Donna Saurage, recounted the numerous milestones achieved during the 40th year. She cited the incredible support of those in attendance and the many others who have supported the Center since it first opened its doors. Pointing out that there are now five Mary Bird Perkins locations across southeast Louisiana where 25 percent of the state’s population resides, Saurage said, “One quarter of our state’s population can receive high quality cancer care close to home, near family and friends, without driving more than 30 miles.”

At the conclusion of the brief program, attendees were invited to stay and celebrate the evening by dancing to the music of Ned Fasullo and The Fabulous Big Band Orchestra. In keeping with the 40th anniversary ruby color, a candy bar of assorted ruby red sweet treats delighted everyone as they filled take-out containers with their favorite candies.
