Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center Foundation was established. 2005
The Foundation surpassed $5 million in the value of the endowment. 2010
The first grant from the endowment was awarded to the Cancer Center. Grants are based on allocation and spending and investment policies, as well as the Board of Directors’ approval. 2011
The Heart of a Hero Fund was formed by grateful patient, T.J. Moran, and matching gifts from the community raising over $2.5 million.


Through a Foundation grant, the Cancer Center acquired the state-of-the-art Gamma Knife Icon, making MBP one of the few cancer programs in the nation to lead a new way of treating cancerous and noncancerous brain tumors, as well as other central nervous system conditions. Since its installation in 2016, more than 1,600 patients have been treated.

The Favre Family Award for Innovation was established. This award provides an opportunity for team member to present innovative strategies, technologies and ideas to advance cancer care.
The first award was presented in 2017 to Connel Chu, who developed a method to help lung cancer patients breathe in a more controlled way during radiation treatment. Since then, eight additional awards have been provided, recognizing team members whose creative ideas enhance the patient experience and outcomes.
The Foundation surpassed $10 million in the value of the endowment.
The Foundation Matching Fund was established to help donors leverage their gift and increase their impact.
The Foundation surpassed over $2.5 million through grants to the Cancer Center to advance cancer care.
The Foundation initiated a Legacy Challenge to secure $50 million in current and planned gifts by 2025 to leave a lasting legacy for generations.
Mary Bird Perkins and LSU received a $7.8 million estate gift from the late Dr. Charles M. Smith to help positively impact the future of cancer care for generations to come through education, research and innovation initiatives in the medical physics field.
The Foundation granted $1 million to the Cancer Center, its first seven-figure grant issued in a single year. These funds support programs like Prevention on the Go, Clinical Research, Medical Physics, Palliative Care, Patient Assistance, and Education. 2025 Legacy Challenge goal
