ENDOWMENT INVESTING As of June 30, 2023, our total endowment value is $30,152,744 with a return of 5.6%. Over the past fiscal year, the market returns are rebounding, and we continue to outperform our benchmark index for the year. Due to generous donor support and fiscally responsible leadership, the endowment continues to grow.

CUMULATIVE RETURNS Since inception, the cumulative investment return is 89.41%. As a result, the endowment has grown because of stable and consistent performance of the portfolio and management of guiding investment and spending policies.

ASSET ALLOCATION The endowment allocation — the percent exposure to each asset class is shown as of June 30, 2023. Endowment investing policies are designed to maximize long-term results at an acceptable level of investment risk. Endowed gifts are invested in Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Foundation’s pooled endowment, a globally diversified portfolio of assets including publicly traded stocks, bonds and alternative investments.

CARE:

Together, we care about the spirit of giving In the spring of 2018, Holly Hollis was looking forward to the future she would share with her fiancé, Mark Stars. At just 34 years old, the attorney and Human Resource Director at MMR Group, was planning the wedding of her dreams when suddenly, everything changed. During an annual appointment, her doctor felt a lump in her breast. Two weeks later, her doctor confirmed the worst — Holly had Stage IV, metastatic triple-negative breast cancer. Statistically, the odds of survival were low. Faced with a life-changing diagnosis and chemotherapy, Holly and Mark decided not to wait until their planned wedding in November. Instead, they married a week later with a small, intimate ceremony surrounded by close family and friends. For the next four years, Holly fought tirelessly in her brave battle against cancer. Her journey — which she chronicled on her blog “The Stars Align”— touched the lives of thousands of people. “She was unlike anyone I ever met,” Mark says. “Beautiful, strong-willed, kind-hearted. Every day, I am thankful she was a part of my life.” Holly was not only a fierce fighter, but an inspiration to all who had the privilege of crossing her path. Friends and colleagues describe her as a person with an unquenchable zest for life, someone who became fast friends with those around her with ease, including her surgical oncologist, Mindy Bowie, M.D., who remained not only her doctor but her friend throughout her cancer journey. Holly’s journey with cancer ended in 2022, but her spirit lives on. To honor Holly’s memory, her friends and family established the Holly Hollis Stars Endowment Fund within Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Foundation. MMR Group, a corporate partner of Mary Bird Perkins, is the anchor donor for the fund. This everlasting gift will create a permanent endowment within the Foundation to support cancer prevention and education efforts in perpetuity for individuals throughout Louisiana 05

and southwest Mississippi, ensuring her legacy will endure through the generosity and support of those who knew and loved her.

Together, we discover the future of cancer care

Physician-Scientist Victor Lin, MD, PhD is leading Mary Bird Perkins’ efforts to expand its clinical research program for patients across the region. A much sought-after specialist who could practice at any facility in the country, Dr. Lin was drawn to Mary Bird Perkins because of the strength of our patient-physician relationships and community connections. Previously an assistant professor at the University of Alabama at Birmingham in the Department of Medicine, Division of Hematology and Oncology, Dr. Lin saw the opportunity to build on the Cancer Center’s more than 50-year legacy of providing world-class cancer care by expanding patients’ access to emerging treatments and experimental therapeutics aimed at enhancing outcomes. “For patients who have exhausted traditional treatment options or who face rarer or more-difficult-to-treat cancers, participating in a clinical trial can offer new therapies that otherwise wouldn’t be available to them,” Dr. Lin says. “And because of the clinical research Mary Bird Perkins participates in, they can access those leading-edge treatment options right here at home.” Through Mary Bird Perkins’ enhanced clinical research program, a greater number of trials are now available to more people, including enrolling the first patients worldwide in a new Phase 1 study. “Expanding access to these types of studies enhances our ability to bring leadingedge treatment options to people in the Gulf South and globally,” he says. “It benefits patients and the entire oncology community. And with precision medicine becoming more defined than ever, I believe that we have the remarkable opportunity and are making major advancements in early detection and treatment today and in the future.”

EMPOWER:

Together, we empower the next generation Dat Hoang’s philanthropic journey began early in his career when he participated in a volunteer project at Mary Bird Perkins. Impressed by the Cancer Center’s dedication to providing the highest quality treatment and compassionate support to all patients, regardless of ability to pay, he was inspired to do more. Soon after, he made his first donation to Mary Bird Perkins, helping fund world-class care and a vast array of support services for all individuals in our community. “Louisiana faces one of the highest cancer mortality rates in the country, and access to quality cancer care is challenging, especially in rural areas” says Dat. “Mary Bird Perkins is making a real difference in the lives of the people of this state. Being from Lafayette, Louisiana, it personally hits close to home with the recent partnership with Opelousas General in the Acadiana area. Over time, his commitment to creating a legacy of support for the future of cancer care in the Gulf South grew. But the profound impact of his gift personally resonated when Dat lost his grandfather to oral cancer in 2020 and his father to liver cancer in 2022 within days of receiving an official diagnosis, and Dat starting a new career in Georgia. Those experiences gave Dat an even clearer understanding of how critical it is that every person has access to high-quality cancer care that is delivered with excellence and compassion.

In addition to his annual contribution, Dat wanted to honor the legacy of his two beloved family members with a gift that will live on for years to come. At just 26 years old, he made the thoughtful decision to leave a planned gift to Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Foundation, ensuring future generations will have access to highquality cancer care. By investing in the Foundation at a young age, the impact of his gift will be even greater because it allows his investment to grow over time.

“The way I viewed it, life can change instantly at any given moment. I wanted to have a plan in place that survives beyond me and my family – one to benefit all in need,” says Dat. He hopes that his gift inspires other young people to consider their estate plans in order to maximize their impact and leave a legacy they are proud of.

HISTORY OF THE FOUNDATION Established on January 1, 2005, the Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Foundation was created by a dedicated group of community members to manage and oversee the successful growth of endowment assets to support Mary Bird Perkins’ mission of improving survivorship and lessening the burden of cancer. The Foundation’s purpose is to build a long-term endowment fund to secure the future of cancer care today, tomorrow and for future generations.
