Since inception, the cumulative investment return is 114.58%. As a result, the endowment has grown due to the stable and strong performance of the portfolio and management of the guiding investment and spending policies.

SECURING THE FUTURE OF CANCER CARE Since we opened our doors over 50 years ago, a legacy of strong philanthropic support has been essential to supporting the Cancer Center’s critical mission. Over 25 years ago, a group of dedicated community members with a vision of securing the long-term viability of Mary Bird Perkins formed a committee that would eventually become the Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Foundation. Through their dedication and your generous support, the endowment has grown to provide $2.5 million in grants to the Cancer Center and helped ensure that all patients in our community can receive leading-edge cancer care, right here at home. Through your generosity, you are further strengthening an already stalwart mission, focused on providing comprehensive cancer services and programs across the entire continuum of cancer care. Your commitment and generosity is providing a legacy of support that will benefit Louisiana and the Gulf South region for years to come. 05
OUR HISTORY:
AT A GLANCE 1995 The “Board of Trust for Endowment and Investment” committee was formed to secure the future of cancer care in our community.
2005 Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center Foundation was established.
2010 The Foundation surpassed $5 million in the value of the endowment.
2011 The Heart of a Hero Fund was formed by grateful patient, T.J. Moran, and matching gifts from the community raising over $2.5 million.
2011 The first grant from the endowment was awarded to the Cancer Center. Grants are based on allocation and spending and investment policies, as well as the Board of Directors’ approval.
2016 Through a Foundation grant, the Cancer Center acquired the state-of-the-art Gamma Knife Icon, making Mary Bird Perkins one of the few cancer programs in the nation to lead a new way of treating cancerous and noncancerous brain tumors, as well as other central nervous system conditions.

The Favre Family Award for Innovation was established. This award provides an opportunity for team members to present innovative strategies, technologies and ideas to advance cancer care.
The Foundation surpassed $10 million in the value of the endowment.

The Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Foundation grew from the “Trust for the Endowment,” a board committee formed by Sancy McCool and Richard Lipsey. These champions had the vision to secure the future of cancer care, alongside Jay Campbell, chair of the Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center board of directors. Together they helped to establish the endowment – a true example of visionary leadership and community support.
Today, that vision continues. Throughout southeast Louisiana and southwest Mississippi, you will find Mary Bird Perkins radiation facilities and comprehensive cancer centers providing leading-edge cancer care and support to thousands of patients and their families every year. From supporting leading-edge research to investing in innovation to educating the next generation of cancer professionals, Mary Bird Perkins provides the very best in cancer care to our region. “The Foundation has been instrumental in Mary Bird Perkins’ ability to bring high quality cancer care to the Baton Rouge area and to grow that into a comprehensive, leading cancer care program that serves the Gulf South region,” says Rose Hudson, current chair, Foundation board. This critical philanthropic support also allows us to serve our mission by expanding access to cancer care to under-insured and uninsured individuals and to invest in prevention community programs designed to enhance wellness and early detection. These programs reduce cancer mortality in the communities we serve and have saved thousands of lives. “From the beginning, we have been motivated to provide the highest quality cancer care to all of our patients, regardless of their financial situation,” says Lee Griffin, one of the founding members of the Foundation and past chair of the Foundation’s board. “If you can save one life, you’ve made a difference. That’s Mary Bird Perkins’ legacy — providing the best possible care to each and every patient we serve.” But when it comes to cancer care, it’s never enough. We can always do more. We remain committed to continually striving to propel the fight forward. That’s why this past year, the Foundation initiated a Legacy Challenge to secure $50 million in current and legacy gifts by 2025. This challenge will leave a lasting legacy for the fight against cancer and save lives for generations.

THE HEART OF A LEADER Louis D. Curet, Foundation board chair emeritus, cancer survivor and tireless ambassador for Mary Bird Perkins’ mission, served as the first chair of the Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Foundation Board. A quiet, humble man beloved by all who knew him, his leadership and devotion to Mary Bird Perkins’ mission was instrumental to the Foundation’s success, and his legacy of service and philanthropic support led to the creation of the Louis D. Curet Volunteer Fundraiser Award named in his honor. “Louis had a passion for saving people,” says Lee Griffin. “I had the privilege of learning a great deal from him and witnessing his tireless service firsthand. His leadership made a real impact on the Foundation and on Mary Bird Perkins.”

TRANSFORMING MEDICAL PHYSICS THROUGH LEGACY GIVING Legacy giving provides the critical groundwork of support Mary Bird Perkins needs to lead the fight against cancer now and in the future. Your gifts can transform programs and services for cancer patients and their families across the region and around the world. Our medical physics academic program is a partnership between the Cancer Center and LSU that provides the highest quality training to medical physicists in the development and use of clinical radiation treatments, devices and technologies and in offering enhanced radiation therapy treatment plans for patients. The Foundation has played an instrumental role in the expansion and elevation of the program.

Since 2004, the program has become a nationally-recognized, accredited program offering a master’s degree, a doctorate and residency program with clinical training within state-of-the-art facilities. The caliber of this robust program has attracted some of the top medical physicists in the country to Mary Bird Perkins. The partnership leverages the educational and resources of both Mary Bird Perkins and LSU to benefit patients receiving patient care around the world. Through your generous support, we are training the next generation of leading medical physicists to provide the highest level of radiation therapy to patients right here at home and advance cancer care globally.
DR. CHARLES SMITH’S TRANSFORMATIONAL GIFT HELPS TRAIN THE NEXT GENERATION OF MEDICAL PHYSICISTS
A beloved family medicine practitioner who devoted his career to helping Louisiana families, Dr. Charles Smith developed an appreciation for the critical role of medical physicists while undergoing life-saving cancer treatment. Motivated to ensure access to the same high-quality cancer care for all in his home state of Louisiana, Smith established the Dr. Charles M. Smith Chair in Medical Physics at LSU in 2006, shortly after LSU and Mary Bird Perkins created an integrated academic-community cancer center model for medical physics education and research. In 2021, a $7.84 million estate gift from the late Dr. Charles M. Smith was received that will advance cancer treatment through a longstanding public/private partnership between LSU and Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center. Smith’s visionary legacy investment has been recognized through the naming of the Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center Dr. Charles M. Smith Medical Physics Program. Through Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Foundation, Smith’s estate will establish a Chief of
Physics Award to support research and educational activities, a directorship and multiple Scholar Awards to assist graduate student research, as well as an educational fund to support graduate education programs. These funds will be available for medical physics initiatives now and in the future, including fostering education and innovation among students and physicists, advancing research opportunities that will enhance treatments and recruiting the highest quality clinicians in this highlyspecialized discipline.

SAURAGE FAMILY SUPPORTS NEWLY ESTABLISHED LECTURE SERIES IN MEDICAL PHYSICS Laurie and Hank Saurage are focused on advancing cancer care through investing in their two passions: education and research. As a philanthropist and business leader in the community, Mr. Saurage has served on the Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center Board of Directors since 2015 and served in many leadership roles over the years. He is a true leader, supporter and ambassador for Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center’s mission.

Smith Medical Physics Program for years to come. His gift will support a newly developed, annual Lecture Series in Medical Physics providing faculty and students the critical opportunity to collaborate, innovate and lead in the fight against cancer. THE GOSS FAMILY ESTABLISHES A MAJOR RESEARCH AWARD Devera and Jerry Goss, community philanthropists and a grateful family, support the Dr. Charles M. Smith Medical Physics Program with a strong passion to advance the fight against cancer with an understanding that research is key to our mission. As a cancer survivor, Mr. Goss is driven to provide the best quality treatment for patients, and Mrs. Goss, as a retired nurse and hospice volunteer, she is compelled to do her part to help lessen the burden of cancer with compassion and support science and medicine. A philanthropist and business leader, Mr. Goss has been a long-serving member of the Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center Board and the Foundation Board since 2007 and served as Chairman of the Foundation’s Board from 2014 to 2016.
DID YOU KNOW If you are over 70 ½, a charitable gift from your IRA utilizing your required minimum distribution can lighten tax burdens for your loved ones in the future and make a difference in the fight against cancer.
Deeply committed to the health and wellbeing of our community, the Goss family made a charitable gift from their IRA utilizing their required minimum distribution to support the medical physics program. Mr. Goss stated that a charitable gift from his IRA enabled his family to make a meaningful and impactful gift today. Additionally, through their dedication to education and up and coming cancer-fighting professionals, they created the Goss Family Medical Physics Research Award to be given to an outstanding medical physics graduate student making significant strides in cancer research.

ANDREW MCGUFFEY Andrew was drawn to LSU’s graduate program in medical physics because of the partnership between LSU and Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center that provided him the unique opportunity to receive hands on, clinical training and to engage in collaborative, cutting-edge research with both academic faculty at LSU and clinical faculty at Mary Bird Perkins. Having completed his M.S. in medical physics in 2020, he is currently pursuing his doctorate in medical physics. The Goss Family Medical Physics Research Award will provide essential support for his research to improve electron radiation therapy to optimize the delivery of radiation treatment and result in better outcomes for patients.

THE LIPSEY LEGACY OF SUPPORT LIVES ON In the late 1960s, sixteen community leaders led by Dr. M.J. Rathbone and Anna Lipsey saw the need for a community owned, nonprofit radiation treatment facility in the Greater Baton Rouge area. With both the vision and financial support of the community, the Cancer Radiation and Research Foundation – now known as Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center – was established. “Since its inception, Mary Bird Perkins has witnessed significant and visionary developments over the past 50 years and is poised for a bright future to propel cancer care forward. I have been honored to carry on my mother’s legacy, serving on the board of directors for 14 years, two years as board chair, and my wife Susan, also
served on the board. Continuing our family commitment to Mary Bird Perkins, my daughter Laurie is a current board member and my daughter Wendy is a dedicated volunteer and ambassador,” says Richard Lipsey. The Lipsey Legacy Society, named in honor of Anna’s vision and her family’s long legacy of dedication, was formed to honor those who have made a commitment through a planned gift or a named endowed fund to Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Foundation. The Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Foundation was formed on January 1, 2005, by a dedicated group of community volunteers to manage and oversee the successful growth of endowment assets.
