2013 COMMUNITY REPORT
Message from the Medical Director This year’s Community Report is about momentum – the momentum that Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center at TGMC kept energized this past year with even more leading-edge treatment options, more prevention and education, more early detection, more outreach, more research, more clinical trials and more enhanced cancer services for our patients and the Bayou Region. The pages ahead will take you on an exciting journey of incredible accomplishment and progress in our ongoing fight against cancer. Since the launch of the community partnership, our state-of-the-art cancer center has continued to thrive. We now provide our community with the full continuum of cancer care, from prevention and early detection to diagnosis, treatment, survivorship and palliative care. Services include surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy, as well as patient navigation, clinical trials and free community cancer screenings sponsored by Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center. Throughout 2013, we expanded our use of Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy (VMAT) treatment techniques, resulting in more treatment options for patients. The Center also earned recognition on the national level with its three-year Accreditation with Commendation from the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer – the nation’s gold standard in community-based cancer care – and renewal of its accreditation by the American College of Radiology (ACR) for an additional three-year term. Meeting ACR’s rigorous standards assures patients, referring physicians and the community that only the highest quality care is being provided at our Cancer Center. In 2013, a TGMC Community Health Needs Assessment Report identified cancer as one of the major health concerns of the community at large. Based on the findings of this assessment, and as a result of a grant awarded from the Baton Rouge Area Foundation’s Future of the Gulf Fund, a new $500,000 mobile medical clinic was commissioned to Mary Bird Perkins to operate and strategically increase the number of cancer screenings provided – at no charge to the uninsured – in Terrebonne, St. Mary and Lafourche parishes. Also increased last year was the frequency of free community education events. A more detailed account of the new Early Bird II and accompanying 2013 screening statistics can be found on pages 6-7. The momentum to do more continues. The tremendous generosity of the community and your unwavering commitment to beating cancer has and will always make the difference. Thank you for keeping Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center at TGMC at the forefront of cancer care.

PREVENTION & EDUCATION Educating Our Youth In 2013, Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center at TGMC and the Bayouland YMCA teamed up to educate local youth, and their parents or caregivers, about “Sun Safety in Every Season.” The goal was to bring attention to the fact that without using the right precautions, childhood exposure to the sun’s harmful rays can result in skin cancers later in life. Children who enrolled in the YMCA’s summer camps, and participated on its sports teams during the fall and winter months, received free information about proper sun protection habits. Cancer Center staff members also visited the Bayouland

Y’s summer camps to present fun and informative sun safety information to the children.

“Children’s skin can be damaged by the sun even during the cooler months,” said Johnnay Benjamin, early detection and education director at the Cancer Center. “We want to teach them how to protect their skin from the sun’s harmful rays while playing outside during all seasons.” The new partnership with the YMCA was a great success, educating 242 children.

In 2013, 912 COMMUNITY MEMBERS were reached at 12 EDUCATIONAL EVENTS throughout the Bayou Region. Of the 912 people reached, 242 CHILDREN were taught the importance of year-round sun safety.

PALLIATIVE CARE SURVIVORSHIP the “Early Bird.” As a result of a grant awarded from the Baton Rouge Area Foundation’s Future of the Gulf Fund to Mary Bird Perkins in 2013, a second mobile clinic – the Early Bird II – began providing additional screenings and educational events in Terrebonne, Lafourche and St. Mary parishes, where death rates from cancer are higher than the state average. “Fighting cancer starts with prevention and early detection,” says Hope Jeff, outreach coordinator at the Center. “Offering more free screenings and cancer education to at-risk populations is a critical part of our mission to improve survivorship and lessen the burden of cancer. Detecting cancer early can make all the difference.” The mobile clinic has three exam rooms and is wheelchair-accessible. Services include free screenings for breast, prostate, skin, oral and colorectal cancers for the uninsured and underinsured. The mobile clinic’s early detection services are staffed by a community outreach coordinator, early detection specialist, nurse navigator and physicians who conduct screenings.

DIAGNOSIS Overcoming Obstacles A cancer diagnosis can often be overwhelming. To assess and respond to the psychosocial stressors newly diagnosed patients may be experiencing, patient navigators at Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center at TGMC use the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) Guidelines Distress Management Tool (DMT). Given to all new patients, the DMT – a

questionnaire – is scored and evaluated by a patient navigator. A higher-than-normal score

in any area indicates the possibility of a treatment road block, making it an immediate priority for investigation by the navigator. “The DMT has been very effective in helping us identify obstacles that may prevent a new patient from getting the care they need,” said Giselle Grisoli, MSW, LCSW, patient navigator and social worker at the Cancer Center. “We also use it to monitor patients’ distress levels at different times during treatment just in case anything has changed that they haven’t shared with us.”
PALLIATIVE CARE SURVIVORSHIP TREATMENT Proactive nutritional care can prevent or reduce the complications typically associated with the treatment of cancer. Fighting with Your Fork is a new hands-on cooking and nutrition class created for cancer patients and their caregivers to learn about the power of nutrition in health and healing.

quality of life both during and after treatment,” said TGMC’s Clinical Dietitian Eric Sedotal, RD, LDN. He collaborates with the hospital’s Executive Chef Jackie Marsh one evening a month, using nourishing ingredients to whip up simple and tasty recipes for very devoted participants. In addition to the food, patients and caregivers especially enjoy their one-onone experience with the chef and dietitian. Classes are offered on how to prepare fat-free, high-fiber or high-protein meals, to name just a few. Sponsored by Cannata’s, with additional funding from Ladies Night Out, the free sessions have been well-attended.

LOU ESTAY (1953 - 2013)
Even before her breast cancer diagnosis, the subject of cancer research was very close to Estay’s heart. Her passion for the cause motivated many around her to join in cancer fundraising walks and relays in search of a cure. “Lou was one of the bravest, most courageous and loving people that we have ever had the opportunity to know and love,” said the TGMC Surgery Team of its hero.
TGMC Surgery honored Lou Estay with a memorial donation to Heart of a Hero, a grateful giving and recognition program to support the fight against cancer. Heart of a Hero is a way to honor or remember someone and support Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center at TGMC’s lifesaving work.
:
GIVING BACK GRANTS EVENTS HEART OF A HERO
For many years, Estay volunteered her time every summer teaching the importance of good hand hygiene and other health topics to Camp Bayou Pride participants. The campers of Camp Bayou Pride in Dulac hosted a Run for Fun in her memory last June, wearing pink shirts to raise awareness about breast cancer. Funds raised from the event were donated to Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center at TGMC in Estay’s honor for all she did for the young people who attended the camp.
ANNUAL GIVING
Lou Estay, a native of Golden Meadow and resident of Dulac, was the Nursing Director of Surgery at Terrebonne General Medical Center for more than 16 years. During that time, she was diagnosed with breast cancer three times and fought it for 14 years. Though engaged in her own battle to survive, Estay was more concerned about others and their fight with cancer. She served as a mentor to many, personally helping them cope with their diagnoses – always with her beautiful, trademark smile.

GRANTS THE COLBERT NATION GULF OF AMERICA FUND Shortly after the Gulf oil spill in 2010, Stephen Colbert created the Colbert Nation Gulf of America Fund and used his on-air time to advocate coastal restoration and assistance for those impacted. The Cancer Center was fortunate to receive a portion of funds collected from around the world. Those resources have expanded community education efforts to help residents of Terrebonne, Lafourche and St. Mary parishes better understand the need for cancer screenings and healthy lifestyles in reducing cancer mortality. The National Cancer Institute is expanding the emphasis on prevention education as both the costs and incidence of cancer increase as baby boomers age. Education is an important part of our mission and instrumental in the reduction of cancer cases in the Bayou Region.
THE GHEENS FOUNDATION, INC. Few people are aware of the enormous capital expense associated with providing cancer patients full access to state-of-the-art radiation therapy treatment technology within their own community. Millions of dollars are needed to purchase and maintain the advanced imaging and treatment equipment that maximizes the outcomes of radiotherapy for our patients in the Bayou Region. The Gheens Foundation, located in Louisville, Ky., remains the largest single donor supporting our high standards for treatment technology at Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center at TGMC. Established to continue the legacy of philanthropists Edwin and Mary Jo Gheens, the Foundation focuses on projects that improve the quality of life for citizens in Kentucky as well as for those living in Terrebonne and Lafourche parishes. The Gheens Foundation and its Board of Directors have been true advocates for the people of coastal southeastern Louisiana.
SUSAN G. KOMEN RACE FOR THE CURE - BAYOU REGION AFFILIATE Louisiana continues to have one of the highest rates of death from breast cancer in the nation, even though the number of women diagnosed with breast cancer here – the incidence rate – is lower than nearly half the states. Early detection and breast health education are both key to changing our mortality rates. Thanks to the Bayou Region affiliate of the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation, Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center at TGMC can provide free breast cancer screenings and follow up to more than 100 adults without insurance or with other barriers to screening and primary healthcare. The advocacy, education and breast screening support from the Susan G. Komen affiliates in Louisiana has resulted in collaborations that are responsible for increasing the number of tumors found in early stages, when treatment is more effective.
