Louisiana, recognized for the excellence of our treatment team, the strength of our partnerships and our patient and community focused programs. 2009 Community Report

A Message from president & ceo Todd D. Stevens

2009 marked another year of exciting progress in the fight against cancer. Through innovative and collaborative partnerships with community hospitals, physicians, academic institutions, support organizations and many others, Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center made great strides toward fulfilling its mission – to improve survivorship and lessen the burden of cancer. With the opening of a new treatment center in Gonzales, LA, in early 2009, the Center’s mission is now being carried out across five regions in southeast Louisiana. In addition, with leadership and support from the Center’s Board of Directors, a team of dedicated employees took on the challenge of updating the Center’s vision and mission statements and developing core values and accompanying service standards. The team’s amazing work captured the essence of why Mary Bird Perkins is such a wonderful community-based organization. Their work exceeded expectations and resulted in a mission renewal appropriately titled “Our Promise.” We broaden the impact to reach common goals through teamwork and partnership.

Adherence on the part of every employee, including myself, to the core values of “Our Promise” – innovation, respect, compassion, integrity and collaboration – guides us to focus on providing an extraordinary experience for those we serve. I am anxious for everyone receiving this report as a friend of Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center, to take the stories in the upcoming pages to heart as a testament to your unwavering support. Todd D. Stevens President and CEO

close to family I was 57 and, although I felt fine, my wife is a nurse and she convinced me to have a colonoscopy. I found out I had a large mass in my rectum that had to be surgically removed. It was malignant. I had Stage II colorectal cancer. When I was told I would need follow-up treatment my first thoughts were to go to Houston. But my doctor suggested I consider Mary Bird Perkins at TGMC. He knew I would get state-of-the-art care there. And he knew that for me, being at home near my friends and loved ones would play a huge part in my recovery. The staff treated me like they had known me their entire life. I sometimes go back to drop in and say hello. I’ll never forget what they did for me. We are so lucky to have this place. I would recommend Mary Bird Perkins at TGMC to anybody.

We promise to display sincerity and honesty in our actions, principles and intentions.

My mom had a double mastectomy when she was 29. She died before her 30th birthday. Because of that I started getting mammograms every year beginning in my late 30s. Two years ago was my first screening by Mary Bird Perkins at the Hammond Health Unit. I read about it in the newspaper. The location was close to my home. Everything was so organized that there was hardly any waiting. I was watching for the ad in the newspaper again this last year when I got a reminder letter that it was time for my mammogram. That was so helpful! While I was there they were also passing out colon cancer screening kits. I may not have gone just to get a colon kit, but since I was already there I took one home. They made it so convenient. I went for one screening and got two! I am grateful Mary Bird provides this service in our community.

educated decision I had recently been diagnosed with cervical cancer. My doctor wanted me to be treated in New Orleans, but I didn’t have any information about how that was all going to happen. And my family and I were anxious about making that trip back and forth from Franklinton. I saw Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center’s education booth at the Washington Parish Fair and found out they had a location in Covington. The people at the booth told me I could ask my doctor to send me there. That’s what I decided to do. It’s been the best care I’ve ever gotten. They treat you like a person and not just a number. I’m so thankful Mary Bird Perkins was at the fair that day. It made all the difference for me. I hope that booth is there every year to help others learn about all the things Mary Bird does to help people in need.

We work to value the worth and importance of every person.

close to home My family moved to the United States 30 years ago from Laos, during the Vietnam invasion. In 1997, we moved to Gonzales. My wife and I have seen the community grow so much over the years. When my doctor told me I had prostate cancer, he sent me to Dr. Johnson at Mary Bird Perkins at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Gonzales. very nice – the perfect doctor, smiling all the time. I was happy to be able to get my cancer care so close to home. I never had to wait for my treatments and I didn’t have to worry about traffic. Mary Bird is only about 10 minutes down the road from my house! Everybody was so caring. I was so impressed. I came here for radiation and everything is good. It’s great to have a cancer center in Gonzales. I tell others to come here for treatment. You don’t have to go very far from home.

erasing fears The treatment I received at Mary Bird Perkins was fantastic, as was the entire staff. I am a 3-year breast cancer survivor because of them. My doctor, Renee Levine, always spoke with a self confidence that helped me trust her expertise. Later, I was able to tell my story publicly on TV, which was humbling and rewarding. I wanted to share my experience with others, hoping it would help someone out there in some small way know there is a wonderful place you can go, right here, that can help you fight your cancer. Now I’m a volunteer. I’m not an actor. I’m real. I can tell patients that I understand on the first day you’re scared out of your mind. But once you’re over that, Mary Bird Perkins becomes a very comfortable, caring place. It starts with the people who welcome you when you walk through the door and just keeps on going. Spreading Smiles Mary Bird Perkins treated my daughter for a brain tumor when she was only 4 years old. Surgeons removed the bulk of the tumor and then Mary Bird treated her with radiation. Today she is 39. I vowed that I would become a volunteer to give back after my daughter’s life was saved. Helen Badeaux Volunteer

While volunteering, I met a patient who had cancer that began in his neck and metastasized. He passed away, but not from the cancer. I think Mary Bird helped him through a courageous battle and added time to his life. There are so many of these stories — all the volunteers have them. I’ve volunteered for 15 years because of God, the good people at Mary Bird and the miracle they all gave me. I want to be able to put a smile on someone’s face and get their mind off cancer, at least for a moment. That’s one of the main reasons I volunteer – it’s so fulfilling.

Your cancer fingerprint Phyllis Crim became one of the first participants in a new frontier in cancer research called Total Cancer Care.™ After being treated for breast cancer, she volunteered to donate her excess tumor tissue to H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center & Research Institute in Florida, where it will be tested for approximately 30,000 genes. “I felt like this opportunity allowed me to do my part in the fight against this disease so my sister and daughters won’t have to go through the same battle I did. Cancer hasn’t beaten me, and I hope through participation in this trial, it won’t keep beating others.” This research will lead to gene-based technology to try to find the best drug specific to the molecular “fingerprint” of a tumor that is unique to each person. The Cancer Program of Our Lady of the Lake and Mary Bird Perkins is one of 18 sites in the country participating in this seminal study.

We are consistently seeking creative solutions to improve the quality of our services.

Outreach Navigation The Outreach Navigation Program was created to reduce the patient’s time spent between the detection of an abnormality at a screening and when the abnormality is resolved. A professional navigator removes any barriers the patient might face in following up on an abnormal finding. In 2009, 748 people were navigated.

Colorectal Patient Navigation The Cancer Program of Our Lady of the Lake and Mary Bird Perkins is dedicated to offering colorectal cancer patients a multidisciplinary approach to cancer care. A team of physicians addresses the entire continuum of care while the patient navigator coordinates the care of the patient throughout treatment, helping to ensure the patient’s understanding of symptom management and to emotionally support both the patient and the family.

TECHNOLOGY In 2009, the Infinity became part of Mary Bird Perkins’ arsenal in its fight against cancer. Using radiation therapy and state-of-the-art computerized medical imaging to treat patients, the Infinity allows for a customized and precise radiation treatment plan.

The more my wife, Terri, and I found out about Mary Bird Perkins’ mission, the more we were impressed, especially by the fact that no one in need of radiation treatment is ever turned away. The emphasis on cancer early detection and the mobile screening clinic was another eye-opener. We also appreciate the efforts made to leverage resources and be fiscally responsible. Mary Bird Perkins is an excellent steward of its donors’ dollars. These are the criteria we look for when we choose our giving priorities. We are fortunate to have a facility like Mary Bird Perkins right here in Baton Rouge, and Terri and I will continue to give our time and financial resources to support it.

Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center foundation

Where We Are Today.

To build an endowment to fight cancer. The Future of Cancer Care Starts Now. With your support, we can make sure services and new advances in cancer care are available for you, your children and your grandchildren through Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center Foundation. With the community’s involvement, we can grow the endowment to reach our goal and ensure that patients and families have access to all the services they need – now and in the future – and that valuable cancer research continues.

Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center

This past year was an extremely challenging one, starting off with negative pressure on both the equity and fixed income markets from the prior year and continuing through the first quarter. The Board of Directors met regularly to revisit the Investment Policy Statement. The second through fourth quarters of 2009 saw the credit and equity markets strengthen as well as some recovery in the economy, which resulted in a significant rise in the Foundation’s portfolio value. The value of our endowed assets as of December 31, 2009, was $3,481,000. With Your Help, the Foundation Will Make a Difference in the Future. When the market value of the endowment reaches $5 million, a percentage of the endowment growth will be allocated each year for priorities that include cancer support services, awareness and education, research, early detection, technology advancements and care for all — regardless of ability to pay. The Foundation will also award grants to other area nonprofit organizations dedicated to helping cancer patients and their families.

A LIFETIME OF service Cancer touched my family many years ago. Treatment protocols then were rather primitive. If my father and mother had been diagnosed sooner rather than later, and if they had available to them the medical advancements that we have today, then they would have enjoyed a better quality of life.

Jay & Libby Campbell Endowment Leaders

Supporting an institution such as Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center Foundation, committed to conducting research and treating everyone regardless of ability to pay, is a worthwhile and noble cause. When you can give of your time and resources to benefit someone else, the ‘mystery’ of giving – fulfillment – is discovered. My wife, Libby, and I were not blessed with children. If we had been, I would have spent my time with them. Instead, that time has been translated into service. Together we do what is good for other people’s families by supporting organizations, such as Mary Bird Perkins, that offer the best care and treatment in our community today and are so focused on planning for tomorrow. 2009 Community Report
