THE PEDESTRIAN PATH

What is the pedestrian path?

The pedestrian path is a multi-functional pedestrian walkway that links the northern parts of the site with the southern. This holds significant importance since it creates an alternative way to cross the site. This alternativ’s main focus point is to create a public space that differs in many ways from those present on the site today. While many streets and public places produce a lot of noise and fumes and are car centred, the pedestrian path creates a place that prioritises a more walkable city by excluding cars.

Working with the strategies

The pedestrian path mainly implements three out of four strategies. It provides spaces for multiple uses as well as places to be able to stay at while shade is always closeby. This creates a public space that invites different usages and demographics, as well as caters to flow-based and static-based movement patterns. Flow-based patterns refer to people in motion, using the path as a way of transporting oneself, whereas static-based patterns instead relate to people staying on the path itself. The pedestrian path offers alternatives for both.

Usage of design tools

The usage of the design tools helps to ensure that the strategies are fulfilled. Since the pedestrian path is planned to host a diverse set of functions the pocket space becomes a key component in making this happen. The compact frame is implemented on several sites alongside the path to service needs and usages for its diverse sets of visitors.

Why develop this site?

The site where the pedestrian path will be located today consist of several large, unbuilt plots with housing on both the west and east sides of them. These plots are unsafe, empty and create an abruption in the flows of the site. By developing them with the plans for the pedestrian path these plots will gain a defined public space, designed for everyone.
