“You’re the reason, I became a West Ham fan and had to suffer my football all these years! Why couldn’t you have played for Man Utd?” Yup we’re that kind of family. But our idol knew he was joking. Well I hope he did haha...

Probably because I wasn’t.

AND I’m not just talking about the weather! But not going to say anything about the ‘B’ word other than I think that’s how you start lots of other words I’d prefer to use. I think dear old Roger Daltry summed my feelings up when some concerned young lady asked him if he was worried about touring if ‘B’ went ahead? To which he chirped colourfully “Why? Do you think we didn’t tour Europe before the *****g EU!” Sorry if I got the wording wrong Rog, but I think I’ve passed on the sentiment.

Why can’t we just leave? I hate all this scare mongering and terms like ‘crashing out’. It wouldn’t be crashing out, it would just be leaving. Yes of course there would be difficulties.

So what? Grow a pair and get on with it.

That’s all I have to say for this issue sorry. Just can’t find the enthusiasm.

I feel so disappointed in our alleged leaders I can’t describe it. Mrs May … she’s got some grit I’ll give her that. But dear oh dear … possible the worst deal in the history of worst deals. Well it isn’t even a deal.

It’s another treaty, but with even less wriggle room than the other useless treaties which as this fiasco clearly shows, wasn’t worth the ‘papier’ it was printed on.

Meet the Southampton Ambassadors Martin Perry

Launched in 2012, Southampton Ambassadors is my project to encourage the city’s elite, big and small, to join together for mutual benefit and the good of the Southampton area. AND its working!

Our aim is to inspire and galvanise business and pride within Southampton and interest from outside. Whatever you need, I recommend checking out a Southampton Ambassador first. This isn’t any of those ‘buy a badge’ to say how good you are.

Aqua Nuts!

A corporate “thrill ride” on the high seas, including a royal lunch and a motivational speaker with a difference!

Ever wondered what it feels like to go offshore power boat racing? Well, how about a thrill ride cutting through the ocean waves with a British and world record powerboat champion at the helm? Well, I've just done that so I now know exactly what it feels like. Bear in mind that as an ex motorcycle speed cop (you didn’t know that did you!) I wasn’t exactly salivating at the thought of a supposed ‘Thrill Day’ on a dinghy. “You’ll love it!” said my fellow Ambassador and master magician Colin Phillips. My verdict? Absolutely awesome!

Tuesday 19th March saw Southampton Ambassadors patron Shelley Jory-Leigh and her great team consisting of Colin Phillips (Shelley’s Agent and Event Director) together with Tina Wellman (Media and Event PR) entertain 8 VIP guests on the open water. The 8 guests (which included me!) were carefully selected (well 7 of them) as directors of top local companies who would be great advocates for Shelley and her team’s new venture.

The day started at Bistro 8 in the beautiful Universal Marina with coffee and croissants. All the necessary sea going and waterproof attire was provided so thankfully no need for me to bring my own leaky dog-walking anorak.

After a safety brief, we were straight out onto the water in a 10 metre Powerboat rib. With 8 guests on board it’s just enough for fun and lots of laughs with the team. The Solent is on our doorstep and it’s one of the best and busiest stretches of water in the world, and that was to be our playground! (But don’t expect to sit down for long. Well not unless you’ve got a friendly chiropractor in the family.)

After pounding the waves we moored up in Cowes on the Isle

of Wight and made our way to the world famous Royal Ocean Racing Club who were are our hosts for lunch. The Captains room made the perfect private setting for a great lunch and also provided the backdrop for Shelley’s “close up and personal” interview on the couch with her Agent and Event Director Colin.

During a fascinating interview he got inside Shelley's head to find out what makes her tick while also delving into Shelley’s amazing story. And it is amazing! At the same time though the “close up and personal” interview/motivational speech was relaxed, funny and even emotional at times with some sensational racing videos to back up Shelley’s amazing tales. The lunch wasn’t even ruined by an impromptu harmonica recital of Isn’t She Lovely by yours truly, setup by guess who (he reckoned I owed him after all the times I’d put him on the spot to do magic tricks on the hoof).

After lunch we made our way back to the jetty in Cowes where we took our places back on board the powerboat rib and braced ourselves for the sea “flight” back to Universal Marina.

It really was an unbelievable day full of excitement and fun! We were also accompanied by a drone that filmed the whole trip

which will be posted on social media very soon so watch out for that! I’ll be the old bloke grinning like a Cheshire cat if you want to know who I am?

Just before we parted at the end of the day, I asked Shelley what made her come up with the idea of this particular ‘thrill’ and ‘experience’. Easy said Shelley, “I have had the most amazing life and an awesome racing career on the water. I just want the opportunity to share all of that with everyone.”

Interested? You and your team, or you and your clients can enjoy the same awesome experience that we had on the water, riding the crest of the waves with British and World Record Powerboat champion Shelley Jory-Leigh at the controls. Oh and just in case you wondered … there is no distinction between female and male powerboat racers … there are just racers.

Thrill day? Yep and some. In fact just about the closest I’ve come to riding that motorbike with the stripes down the side again.

Southampton celebrates everything about coffee with ‘UK Coffee Week!’

This April we are partnering with UK Coffee Week to celebrate some of the fabulous coffee haunts in Southampton and fundraise for Project Waterfall - a charitable initiative bringing clean water, sanitation and education to coffee-growing communities across the world.

As part of this initiative we are working with several dedicated coffee outlets here in Southampton to raise money in lots of different creative ways. These efforts will give coffee lovers across Southampton the chance to support Project Waterfall, and make their cup matter, simply by enjoying their daily coffee or trying something or somewhere new.

UK Coffee Week in Southampton will be running from 29 April – 5 May with some of our participating coffee shops, retailers and foodservice outlets fundraising for Project Waterfall, by offering Coffee and Cake for just £4!

The Intensity of Love The intensity of love, the intensity of hate, all consuming.

The intensity of love intoxicating, nothing matters but your love.

The intensity of hate every present, the mind consumed by hate eating away every part of your being.

The intensity of love just a toss of a coin, heads I win, tails you lose!

The intensity of love, leads you to understand, there is no misery like attachment, and there is no happens like detachment.

The intensity of love counts not, as nothing matters, when in love, time has no score, all that matters is the all consuming and ravaging love.

The intensity of hate counts every word, every wrong, you said this, you did this, even the dislike of the way you breath Oh my, oh my, how the two opposites consume the phsyc day and night.

The intensity of love full of abandonment and joy.

The intensity of hate full of holding on to all that holding on can lead to misery beyond misery making every breath you take misery.

The two opposites drive this world, the two opposites consume each and everyone, which would you be consumed by.

When love turns into hate how the mind protects the hate. Each lovers kiss now becomes the poisons of hate, each lovers embrace becomes the imprisonment of justification of existence.

The paradox of love and hate, each as intense each other.

See each as all consuming and see each as the consuming of the self, one as joy and the other as death.

The intensity of love and the intensity of hate.

“Close Encounters of the Third Kind” The film saw UFO’s charge around providing bright displays of coloured lights and one night I followed something similar down the M27. It was moving fast, at ground level, and had an array of red and white lights that didn’t match any familiar configuration.

I gave chase. Wouldn’t like to say what was on my speedo but I was shifting when I caught what turned out to be a Vincent Black Prince with a massive sidecar with suitcases strapped to the rack on the boot. Reason for all the lights was the big folding caravan towed behind that 1954/5 1000cc classic Brit bike, they must have been keen to set up camp because they left me standing when I eased back to 70mph.

Bikes with sidecars - a.k.a. outfits - were so common as I grew up, providing very economical transport for entire families. Sidecars came in variations of a theme. A roofless, bullet shaped, body with protective chromed rails (e.g.

Steib) up to a double adult, fully enclosed ‘capsule’ with a folding sunroof (e.g.

Watsonian) and ultimate luxury was a car radio running of the bike’s battery.

Often, dad would have a bike when he courted mum, couples married and often still travelled by bike - after all, it’s always been more fun. Then children appeared, as they will, and so a sidecar was bolted to the family bike for a hell of a lot less than a second hand car - cheaper road tax and insurance too. Many families didn’t even want a car and toured the UK and Europe in a real spirit of adventure rather than fill with photos, to get an idea search for “touring Europe with a sidecar in the 50s images”.

Licensing in the past allowed a 16 year old to ride the largest bike made, if it had a sidecar attached, on a provisional license - just tie the L plates on and take to the road - no training at all required. Rebellious types fitted a bath, box or a coffin in place of a sensible sidecar.

I was 17, living in Blandford, when I bought an early 1950s BSA 500 single with just a few boards screwed in place of a sidecar body, it was owned by a gamekeeper on the Charborough Estate and when I rode it along a track a herd of deer encircled me - owner had fed them from the outfit.

Riding it back proved problematic due to different riding style (you don’t lean an outfit) I was almost home when I lost control and ended up in someone’s drive - that someone being my head teacher which didn’t go down well as evidenced by shouts of “DON’T YOU DARE RIDE THAT **8(&^$ THING TO SCHOOL!” Years later I bought a 650 twin with a double adult sidecar, got home took chair off and sold it for what I paid for the outfit - I’m a two wheel rider and just wanted the bike.

But I could eventually go three wheels when my joints give up the struggle. Sports sidecars have evolved into aerodynamic pods that would look at home in Close Encounters and are fitted out inside to the standard you’d expect in a top class car - comfort, style and fun as you shout abuse at the rider. Few years ago we rode up to Peterborough with a mates’ mate who piloted a sports outfit on a 1200 Yamaha, I’ve got to be honest and say, we didn’t wait for him as I’d expected.

You don’t have to be stuck with a bike engine either, I’ve seen specials with Reliant engines as well as Fiat and other compact car engines and a couple of V8 motors although a compact V6 looks better, in my opinion. I was riding that B33 (sans sidecar) when I saw something I’d

only read about, a rare 1000cc Munch Mammoth (fitted with NSU car engine) with a sports single seat chair. I say saw, should have said glimpsed because rider breezed past me and powered into the sunset.

In the early 1980s a friend bought a ratty CZ 350cc fitted with what looked like a plastic storage box over the third wheel. Someone we knew (bit of a clot) had broken a leg on his bike and wanted cheap transport while he repaired his bike, so cash soon changed hands. Couple of hours after the sale said clot was interviewed by police after hitting the only tree on a long road, wrote outfit off in process. Officers were surprised to find leg in cast and crutches came not from tree incident but acci-

dent three weeks earlier. Clot was told, in not so many words, to hop it on his crutches and not to take to the road until fully mobile.

Should taking to the road on two wheels seem daunting, adding that extra one on the side opens a whole new world.

Oh, should have mentioned the Sidewinder, the lightweight leaning sidecar frame which got round the need for something lumpy and didn’t require a different riding technique, just lean and power as normal. Sue had one on her Suzuki 550cc because she didn’t want a 125cc - the frame is still lurking somewhere in the garage.

“WRITE ABOUT ANYTHING” he said! Well that narrows it down?

I think I’ll write about er ... me.

Hi, I'm Matt Black, Some of you may have heard my name (and some will have seen it on the side of a pot of paint!), but most will have not. I am a pianist/ comedian/ songwriter/record producer/radio host / columnist ... (see below).

The Tangled Tale...

Ah yes, so this month’s article is a lesson in how NOT to move house if you have your own recording studio!

HERE’S A LITTLE FREELANCE WORK I DID BEFORE I GOT THE HANG OF LABELLING. I have recently relocated Hangover Hill Recording Studio from Bournemouth to Blandford Forum, mainly because working in the creative industry I need to feel I have at least a little space around me that's ideal for promoting creativity.

However sometimes I am so focused on working to finish various projects for people, as well as gigging, that I leave things till the last minute. (Like your column Matt? Ed. “Yes boss.”) Please note, moving house is not one of the times where it is advisable to do this! Other people’s projects I mean. So, whilst busy with all of the above, I literally worked right up until the day before, suddenly finding myself deconstructing a whole studio … which includes 5 monitors, 2 pianos, a vocal booth, various mixing desks, hard drives, computers, speakers, microphones and a ridiculous amount of leads!

Due to my own negligence the leads have caused a lot of anxiety which has lead (see what I did there?) to a few outbursts of very colourful language! Primarily because I just unplugged them as I went and put them into bags. Yes I can see your horrified faces and I can hear you saying “What a silly man, why didn't he at least attach the various leads to the right bit of equipment before loading it into the van?” I can assure you I have learnt my lesson now, as when I arrived at my lovely new location, it took me a week of solid grafting to manage to find everything, put it in order and back together.

The end result however is a quiet country house that's away from the hustle and bustle of town and allows clients to come in and feel relaxed and creative during their recording sessions. I wake up to views of fields and the odd pheasant charging up the garden! I come in from my gigs at night being able to sit and look a million beautiful stars in the universe. All of which make for a very happy record producer. So you see it’s all worked out fine in the end.

Should you find yourself in the same situation however please follow the following 3 tips: 1

Leave yourself 3 days (At least! Ed) to potter around your studio taking things apart in an orderly and thoughtful manner.

Tape the right lead to the right bit of equipment or put it in a bag and label it.

Think through where each piece of equipment will be going in your new abode and put it straight there so you know exactly where it is and you can simply put it back together.

Make sure you’ve got tea, coffee and plenty of milk.

Don’t be a Matt Black and do it all while still working!

Thinking about it … 3 tips aren’t enough.

But seriously: Some studio fun...

So a Musician/Engineer walks into a Studio, and asks the Female receptionist, Karen, to see the owner.

She says, he's out right now. The guy says, he'll wait. After 5 minutes, he tells her, “You know you have lovely breasts.” He pulls out two £50 notes and says, “I'll give this to you if you let me see them.”

She thinks about it for a while, and says, “What the Hell,” and opens her shirt.

The guy throws the £50 notes on her desk.

After 5 more minutes, he says “You know, you have a lovely bottom.”

He pulls out another two £50 notes and says, “I'll give you this if you dance around the office for me.”

Again, she thinks about it for a while, and says, “Why not” and dances around the office for him. He throws her the other hundred.

After 5 more minutes he says, “Look, I've got to go. Tell Ed that I was here, okay?”

Later on, Ed comes into the studio. The receptionist says, “Your weird, client, friend, Bob, was here, but had to leave.”

Ed says, “Oh good! Did he leave me the £200 he owes me?”

DREADZONE There is a famous quote which reads ' when you take things for granted, the things you are granted get taken'.

Live music is one of the things we sometimes foolishly take as a given. A recent report has shown that over the past decade 35% of all venues in the UK have closed. In this region, we have lost The Cellars (Portsmouth), Notes Cafe, Talking Heads, Mr Kyps (Poole) and now metal haven The Fireshouse is under threat too.

There are various reasons for these closures, running costs, noise restrictions, greedy property developers and lack of government support, but perhaps the biggest reason is that there are simply not enough people going to watch live music and supporting these venues anymore.

We are fortunate enough to have some superb establishments locally, which cater for all music, tastes but if we do not use them, we will lose them! As always, there are some tantalising attractions coming up over the next couple of months.

Regular readers of these pages will be familiar with a band called Zen Juddhism and the allpowerful musical genius behind it, one Jude Juan Nate. Not content with being in one band, he recently joined another Jimmy B And The Death Rattles - and they've just released an album.

Formed a couple of years ago with personnel from Southampton, Fareham and Pompey, they were the last rock band to play the much missed Talking Heads.

Citing influences like Nick Cave, Alice Cooper, The Buzzcocks and David Bowie, it's perhaps the latter's career which is informing Jimmy and the gang the most as they describe themselves as a concept band, playing fictional roles in a fantasy world based around "the city of Lux".

For live shows, they often take to the stage with contortionists, fireeaters and other performance artists to help tell the story of

Jimmy B and his struggle with drugs and alcohol. It's a tale of misery and addiction, but ultimately redemption and salvation as he leads a motley crew of freedom fighters to overthrow an evil queen bitch and there are plans for an accompanying graphic novel and prose novella by the end of the year to further enhance the Death Rattle experience.

If all this sounds a bit like a rock and roll circus, well .. that's because that's precisely what it is.

Actually forming to help "Jimmy" recover from real life woes, this is music as therapy, art as reclamation and performance as escape.

The album itself is doggedly rocking from the off, with full make-up and legs akimbo.

Opener Monkey is straight from The Stooges songbook, while Tallulah sounds like Diamond Dogs era Bowie before the story opens up with the piano-led Meatloavian God Is Here. Other highlights include Numbers (imagine David Bowie and Marilyn Manson's love-child fronting Goldfrapp and you're in the ball-park), We Are Fire (an outand-out stomper with some great guitar noodling and just the right amount of retro keywork) and then things get all Gary Numan on the mostly synthetic The Returned before the album goes full on rock opera with the delightfully bonkers Soul Savers.

Ridiculously overblown in the best possible way, as a record Porno Taught Me How To Love is so much fun I can only imagine how much better it would be live.

BOOKS red & rit They say that change is as good as a rest. This issue, instead of writing about a lot of pages being turned, I’m writing about a lot of words being downloaded and CDs inserted. Audio books are very popular and in this time of fast driving lives on the never-ending motorway of being busy the printed pages are often left behind in the slow lane.

Let’s start with a James Bond prequel. Over the years, several authors have brought new ideas and stories to be part of the 007 franchise, all with permission from the Ian Fleming estate , deals no doubt done over a couple of dry martinis definitely shaken rather than stirred. Anthony Horowitz following on from his 2015 Bond novel Trigger Mortis brings us Forever and a Day (Random House Audio £20.00) set before the events of Casino Royale, we encounter a James Bond pre secret agent 007 who is a little nervous at taking on the responsibility of license to kill. It’s an intriguing and unusual tale that very much drives forward the personality of the iconic agent in tense and exciting ways. The story also incorporates original unused story ideas from Fleming himself. Read in a concise way by Matthew Goode this is an outing for everyone’s secret agent that is a worthy and worthwhile addition to the all that is Bond old and new.

One of the publishing events of the year is undoubtedly a Lee Child Jack Reacher book.

I have a confession to make, I’ve never read a Jack Reacher novel in fact I still haven’t but I have now listened to one! Past Tense (Random House Audio £20.00) is the twenty third story in this hugely popular series, and I really enjoyed this tale

of the eponymous hero who of no fixed abode as always, finds himself in deepest New England. He sees a signpost that leads to a town, Laconia, where he has never been before which coincidentally turns out to be the birthplace of his father. The adventure begins in this curious place where the present becomes dangerous with throwbacks to a past that feels almost chillingly false; especially when he is told that his father never lived in the aforementioned town. It’s a nail biting story read well by Jeff Harding who has a style of speaking that cautiously envelopes you into the narrative, an uneasy cosiness that adds to the tension of a thriller that creeps up on you, don’t listen too long with the lights out or driving down country roads that have signs to long forgotten locations.

A little bit of Terry Pratchett is a good thing, seven BBC Radio 4 full cast dramatisations is a full on put your hand into the cookie jar treat fest. On the downside listening to all six plays in one sitting would be overkill, rather like eating all the cookies at once, seemingly a good idea at the time but... treats are best enjoyed in moderation so sit back, have a cuppa (not a cookie!) and dip in now and again. Terry Pratchett: The BBC Radio Drama Collection (Random House Audio £40.00) brings together the range

and diversity of Pratchett’s imagination, which is brought to life by some magnificent casts including Sheila Hancock, Martin Jarvis and Alex Jennings, most famous these days for his portrayal of Alan Bennett in The Lady in the Van. There are fifteen CDs in this wonderful set, each one should be savoured and time given to relish the genius of Terry Pratchett’s creativity. If you are downloading watch those gigabytes!

The cover for Rumpole: On Trial & other stories ( BBC Physical Audio £20.00) took me by surprise, my image of Rumpole is of the well lived man who has enjoyed the odd long lunch over the years, he is the any glass of port to quell a potential storm type of guy. That could be down to the TV adaptations which starred Leo McKern who certainly gave the impression that long and everlasting lunches were the order of the day, every day.

John Mortimer’s most famous creation Horace Rumpole was supposedly based on himself and his blind father Clifford who was a probate and divorce barrister. Away from the television, Julian RhindTutt is the fifth actor to take on the part and he brings an energised if slightly flamboyant and edgy Rumpole to the Old Bailey canon. Mortimer’s writing is of course top notch as the narrative drives the

barrister forwards in navigating some unusual situations and we even get to hear Hilda (She Who Must Be Obeyed) Rumpole narrate an intriguing tale of romance and murder which does get rather passionate as she falls for the charms of a smooth talking solicitor. These tales originally broadcast on the radio are expertly realised, written by a craftsman intricately weaving words and sentences together to produce a rich tapestry of tales.

An audio book is the perfect companion that can accompany us anywhere, whether it is by CD, Smartphone, PC or tablet, a whole library of the spoken word is waiting to entertain. In a future column we will revisit some more audio delights, next issue the printed word returns…

It’s beginning to feel a lot like er ... hang on ... I think I’ve started this way before? Good. A load to get through this issue so let’s just get stuck in!

LUKE SITAL-SINGH A Golden State Whenever I review anything, I try not to look at any promotional material, videos or bio's for the artist, preferring a blank slate as my mindset because I think it helps avoid any prejudice. It's also way more fun afterwards when I do investigate further and find out what other people think of whoever it is I've been listening to.

In the case of Luke Sital-Singh's new album, I was instantly struck at how mellow it sounds despite a definite melancholy that pervades throughout. It's an unusual combination of a kind of Sunday morning "easy" vibe mixed with a large dose of gloomy introspection. There's a lot on A Golden State to make you worry about Luke's state of mind at first listen, but as the songs grow and boy, do they grow - you pick up on the sprinkles of humour and realise that he's not actually miserable, just a little less obvious than most up-and-coming artists.

Having toured with the likes of Martha Wainwright and Villagers, Luke isn't exactly wet behind the ears though, and this record was born in Portland’s Jackpot Studios, set up by Elliott Smith which feels appropriate given the flavour of the end-product.

The music itself is mostly acoustic and downtempo, with Luke's voice projecting itself earnestly across everything, whether singing at his natural pitch or in a highly affective falsetto. The strongest element is his ability to tell a story and convey his

emotions : the lyrics are beautifully crafted throughout and would actually make stunning poetry, should he ever feel the urge to publish. Some artists rhyme for rhyming's sake but Luke never does that and time after time I thought "That's clever" to myself while listening to A Golden State.

The Last Day is a good example of what I mean, as he details how he'd like to die - see, I told you he was a bit gloomy. Yet, despite the subject matter, the song is achingly tender and makes my hair stand on end whenever I hear it. It was released as a single last year, while the next one, Los Angeles, is also another stand out, about the city he's recently moved to from Bristol.

Swapping Weston-super-Mare for Malibu Beach seems to have prompted its creation, and the song exposes his worries about the upheaval he's going through yet it remains hopeful that he's done the right thing in going there.

This is as strong an album I've heard from a singer-songwriter solo artist in a long while and rewards multiple listens. It's definitely a grower and won't have you up and dancing anytime soon, but if you enjoy a more leisurely pace give it a go - it'll be perfect for the summer.

FONTAINES D.C. Dogrel And now for something completely different .. a five-piece Irish indie band.

Hailing from Dublin (the DC stands for Dublin City), Fontaines DC are a young group formed three years ago while the members were still at college and are very, very Irish indeed. Like Lou Reed and New York, Ray Davies with London and The Smiths with Manchester, they write about what they know and where they're from. Honesty is clearly a real touchstone here, with an unashamedly "Oirish" accent singing throughout that goes handin-hand with the subject matter, touching as it does on The Liberties, the old working class area they grew up in.

James Joyce is name-checked nicely in one number, while the title of the album, Dogrel, means "crude verse of little value". Having spent most of the last few years playing the pub circuits in Ireland, the UK and, more recently, the US, the boys are practised in the art of "drinking

and writing poetry and romanticizing it to bits” so Dogrel is an in-joke that shows they're keeping their feet on the ground.

From the off, there are many influences at play with the Fontaines DC sound. The frontman, Grian Chatten, throws out a Johnny Rotten-esque roll of the rrr's in the opener, the single Big, as he boasts that his "childhood was small, but I'm gonna be big". It's a relentless, driving statement of a song that's raw, energetic and frenetic .. and that whole vibe continues throughout the rest of the record. Sha Sha Sha feels like a cross between The Artic Monkeys and The Smiths, while Too Real is pure Killers with a Dublin drawl. Joy Division burst through on Television Screen, we're back to the early melancholy of The Smiths on Roy's Tune, before the band pass around the lipstick and backcomb their hair for the bassdriven Cure-fest The Lotts.

Chequeless Reckless is pure fifties rock and roll - think Gene Vincent with a touch of The Sex Pistols for good measure and you're about there. The Ramones are next up on Liberty Belle, while the pace is cranked up again on the jangly and more original - Boys In The Better Land, with the excellent line "If you're a rock star, porn-star, superstar .. doesn't matter what you are : get yourself a good car and get out of here". The anthemic closer, Dublin City Sky, is another song that's less homage and more Fontaines, but for me the most interesting track on the album is the driving rocker, Hurricane Laughter, with a relentless rhythm section overlaid with a feedback-heavy electric guitar. It's by far the least derivative track on Dogrel and manages to sum up what the band is about : noise, energy and those inventive Irish lyrics, this time delivered almost as a soundtrack to the rest of the record in the form of a poem set to music. I know that sounds like most songs ever written, but with this one it's deliberately spoken and not sung and yet it works. Telly Savalas eat your heart out ! I'm looking forward to their next album where they should spread their creative wings even more.

FRANK CARTER AND THE RATTLESNAKES End of Suffering Why A Butterfly Can’t Love A Spider is a great song title. It's also the album opener on End Of Suffering, the new release from Frank Carter And The Rattlesnakes.

With solid punk roots and a penchant for the darker side of rock, Frank Carter's sound is heavy, dramatic and gloomy. There is some light amid the shade on the record in the form of a couple of scorching ballads, but for the most part the signature Rattlesnakes noise is controlled menace - and I like it.

The superb Tyrant Lizzard King features Tom Morello of Rage and Audioslave fame on guitar and is a catchy chugger with a completely brilliant, utterly overblown solo, while Heartbreaker cranks up the pace and is as close to a sing-a-long as they get. Lead single, Crowbar, showcases the more theatrical side of the band and manages to be both commercial and authentically punk at the same time.

Love Games sounds like a Marilyn Manson grinder, while the hauntingly honest Anxiety reveals another facet of Frank's persona as it deals with his own self-doubt as a man and as an artist. The tongue-incheek humour of Latex Dreams is another stand-out on a richly varied rock album. There's no doubting the credentials on display here, with the record being produced by Cam Blackwood (George Ezra / Jack Savoretti) with Alan Moulder (Nine Inch Nails / Queens Of The Stone Age) also mixing what has turned out to be a thrilling ride through rock, punk, grunge and beyond ...

JESSE MAC CORMACK Now Montreal singer-songwriter Jesse Mac Cormack's new album, Now, is a subtle slice of art rock which, for me, instantly conjured up the singular sounds of Talk Talk. With a voice that's remarkably similar to their singer, the sadly recently departed Mark Hollis, Jesse's musical direction is also rather familiar to fans of the new wave band. Now is chockfull of chunky synths, programmed drumbeats and eighties guitar stylings and it's all washed down with that delicate, almost frail vocal delivery which can't help but drag the listener back to the golden age of early electronica. Highlights include Stay, which sounds like it could've been dropped from The Colour Of Spring for being a bit too upbeat, the world-music vibes of title track, Now, and the beautifully moody closer, Nothing Lasts. There's a touch of French art-synth outfit Air and a smidge of Sylvian, but in the end you keep coming back to Talk Talk purely because of the soundalike quality of Cormack's astonishing voice. If you're a fan of the band and wish they'd made a few more records, I would strongly suggest giving this a go.

JOHNNY LLOYD Next Episode Starts In 15 Seconds Comparisons with Nick Drake rarely do an artist any favours, but Johnny Lloyd has more chance than most to live up to such high expectations on his brilliantly-titled new album.

Mostly acoustic, the record was deliberately crafted within the challenging framework of nailing each number in three takes. The result is an authentic and at times raw altfolk outing with sprinkles of piano and the odd cello to accompany the guitar, harmonica and vocals.

Having remarked on the similarities of singers elsewhere in this issue, the theme continues with Lloyd because he sounds exactly like Marc Bolan .. on a Sunday morning, sat quietly in a coffeeshop, gently showcasing some new material to a select bunch of friends and well-wishers. It's perhaps most apposite on the wryly funny I'll Be Me, as Johnny admits "I'll never be the first man to walk upon the moon, I'll never be a rock star who died way too soon".

There's a nod to Bob Dylan on Fix, while Mass Shooting deals with a sensitive subject, exploring the reasons why such things happen in the US all the while asking us not to blame the children, but instead to "blame it all on freedom".

KAKKMADDAFAKKA The Rest The Norwegian indie rockers with the ridiculous name are at it again on new single, The Rest, an anthemic outing that reminds me of local heroes, Delays, with plenty of harmonies, a string accompaniment and an undeniably summery, SKINNYalmost LISTER trippy feel. They've been around for about fifteen years and the song is from their sixth album, Diplomacy, which is out now.

MC FLOWDAN Welcome To London Welcome To London is the new single from grime artist, MC Flowdan, and is a haunting, spare slice of modern rap that is undeniably British.

"Nobody don't trust nobody that's how we function" is one of the more radio-friendly lines from the track, which opens with the sound of a needle hitting vinyl, lending it an authentic old school vibe.

It's tense, it's menacing and it's hypnotic .. you have been warned.

Barry Upton Our resident pop guru Barry is a multi international hit songwriter/producer/performer. Initially a front singer with Brotherhood Of Man he’s worked with a multitude of household names including being creator of the lovable pop outfit STEPS, penning their massive hit 5678 and with his mate and editor of this ‘ere paper, previously co-hosting the AND Magazine Show on Radio Hampshire. He’s currently a TV & radio presenter and producer in Thailand, still performing and a double #1 Chart buster in 2018 ... twice!

THE ELECTRIC GUITAR ... well, I never knew!

The sexiest instrument on the planet, by far, is the Electric Guitar.

It has been a massive part of popular music culture for many decades now and is such a versatile instrument, familiar to just about everyone.

I, like most enthusiastic guitar players, have a large collection, some of which are there only to be looked at and admired.

There is actually a formula for guitar players to decide how many guitars you actually need. This is … how many guitars you already have + 1.

For my 49 years of playing all sorts and makes of electric guitar, the Gibson Les Paul and an almost overused Fender Stratocaster are my ‘go to’ favourites.

However, until recently, I never knew that Leo Fender didn’t know how to play guitar. The inventor of the famous guitar brand, which includes the Telecaster and Stratocaster models (favored by Eric Clapton

and Jimi Hendrix, among many others), never learned how to play his own instrument. Fender began as an accountant with a knack for repairing radios, later turning that hobby into a full-time electronics operation.

The highly versatile Telecaster, which he developed in 1950, became the first mass-produced solid-body electric guitar.

The Telecaster was originally named the Broadcaster but there was already a drum set with the same name. There was a period during which there was no name for the guitar and Fender produced guitars with no name on the headstock. These “Nocasaters” are pretty valuable as they are prized collector items.

The sounds of the electric guitar made it to outer space. In 1977, both Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 were launched into space with remnants of international life and culture onboard. On each vessel was a goldplated phonograph record with 115 sounds and images curated by a team led by astronomer Carl Sagan. Along with selections that included the likes of Bach and Beethoven, Sagan decided to throw in, however controversial it was at the time, Johnny B Goode

by Chuck Berry, an American Rock’n’Roll anthem defined by its rollicking electric guitar lick.

George Delmetia Beauchamp is just as important as Leo Fender and Les Paul. His name may not ring a bell, but Beauchamp designed the first fully functional guitar pickup and secured a US patent for the electric guitar in 1937. The pickup, which converts string vibrations into amplifiable electrical signals, makes an electric guitar work.

Without one, there is no electric guitar.

Beauchamp was also a founder of the popular Rickenbacker guitar brand alongside his friend and business partner Adolph Rickenbacker. Rickenbackers were often seen in use by both John Lennon and George Harrison in the era of the Beatles, also a ‘go to’ guitar for the classic rock sound of bands such as the Who and The Byrds.

Hawaii was key in the development of the electric guitar. There was a giant Hawaiian craze in the 1910s and 1920s, with a rise in popularity of the island’s sounds and culture (as often seen in movies).

Integral to Hawaiian music is the Hawaiianstyle steel guitar, which most of early electric guitar development modeled itself after.

The first electric guitar was made out of cast aluminum. Hitting the market in 1932, the A-25 was also called the “Frying Pan”.

People didn’t like the Les Paul Trio at first. With a thrice-weekly performance slot on NBC’s Fred Waring’s radio program, The Chesterfield Hour, listeners often wrote in to

complain about the “strange and unpleasant sound of the newfangled electric guitar Les Paul was playing”. In the late 1930s, there were many demands to fire him. Today, the Les Paul guitar brand is an essential part of pop culture, and Paul himself is both in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the National Inventors Hall of Fame.

The Beatles made the very first rock record with guitar feedback. 1964’s ‘I Feel Fine’ has a sound at the start that was accidentally discovered by the band and put to use on the single, thanks to their openminded producer George Martin.

Pete Townshend turned his guitar into a machine gun. That was the actual sound he went after, slamming his guitars into speaker cabinets and toggling the pickup-selector switch violently. “To me the guitar was a symbol,” explained the Who’s lead guitarist.

“It was a metaphor for a machine gun. And the only thing you could do with a machine gun in the 60s was break it across your legs.

That’s what I did.” You can hear these specific sonic strategies on songs like My Generation and Anyway, Anyhow, Anywhere.

Jimi Hendrix’s first Stratocaster was one of Keith Richards’ guitars. The white instrument was given to him by Linda Keith, Richards’ girlfriend at the time. Hendrix had wanted one for years because it was played by two of his biggest idols, Buddy Guy and Otis Rush. Supposedly, it was given to Hendrix without Richards knowing.

The highest price paid for an electric guitar at an auction was $959,500 in 2004 for Eric Clapton’s ‘Blackie’ Stratocaster. That is a lot of guitar lessons!

The Fender factory keeps busy. They produce nearly 90,000 strings a day. This is about 20,000 miles per year which is enough to circle the globe. They also make about 950 guitar necks per day! Some years they produce over 250,000 guitars. Banjos, mandolins and violins are also made there.

In 1950, Leo Fender tested the strength and durability of the guitar necks by balancing the neck between two chairs and standing on it!

Talk about love for your guitar. In 2001, Chris Black actually married his Stratocaster.

Now that is devotion!

Jimi Hendrix’s tombstone has a Fender Stratocaster carved into it.

Les Paul was in a car accident in 1948 and he asked the doctor to set his arm permanently in a guitar playing position.

Oh yes ... the electric guitar has been an important part of most people’s lives over the last 60 years in one form or another. Long may it continue to be so.

There's a new café on Shirley High Street and I'm delighted to report it's a little beauty.

With a bright white sign above the door literally wishing everyone "Good health !", Bon Santé opened its doors for business in February and has been going from strength to strength ever since.

The white motif is carried through to the interior with funky upcycled furniture and floorboards throughout, but look a little higher up on the walls and you'll see a range of artwork that's both well thought out and far classier than most places on the Shirley strip.

Mirroring their menus, the themed pieces present a perfect day from dawn till dusk and are the brainchild of owners Stu and Catherine who wanted to project something a little different for their customers. The music in the café is also key to creating a special vibe and the couple enjoy shaking things up with an eclectic playlist.

But you don't go to a place like this for the decor and the sounds, do you - you want to eat, right? Or do you want to eat right?

Whether you're looking for a healthy lunch, a veggie or vegan special or a traditional full English, proprietors Stu, Catherine and chef Liz have come up with a wide range to cater, quite literally, for everyone. For a start, there's an excellent childrens' menu featuring halloumi and sweet potato fries as well as the more customary potato version, which you can have straight up or as curly chips. The breakfast options include wraps, sandwiches and rolls as well as a big or small plate of the good stuff, while you can have your eggs any way you want or select something a bit hipper, like avocado or salmon, banana bread toast and a variety of

seasonal berries. There's also a light bites menu with the usual favourites like jacket spuds and doorstep sarnies along with more continental style snacks like panini and homemade soup. The range of meals that are homemade is impressive, including curries, chilli, lasagne and some gorgeous pizzas, including an all-vegan. The burgers come in three different options : Aberdeen Angus, mushroom or Bangkok vegetarian, or you could go for one of two open gallettes Moroccan or Italian - a Portobello slider or an avocado bean boat.

Bon Santé also boasts a full liquor license and has a range of draught and bottled beers and ales, or you can choose from a variety of red, white, rose or sparkling wines.

Their coffee is beautiful and they take it very seriously, while I can personally testify to their full English breakfast too, with thick back bacon, black pudding, sausages, hash browns, beans, mushrooms, eggs .. am I making you hungry yet ?

The team are planning some special events and kicked off recently with a 90s/2000s night, pancake day and a Mothering Sunday afternoon tea promotion where mothers eat for free! There’s even a rumour that Martin will be performing an acoustic set with at least one of the guys from PS Perrystone Hill ... Sofar Sounds style, so don’t miss that! (That’s unexpectedly complimentary of you Rigger. Local TV Presenter Michael Kurn, Launches First Book

University hosted Qipao Fashion Show hailed as a great success!

TV Presenter and Southampton Ambassador Michael Kurn has come a long way since his paper round in Durley and his time playing football in the Tyro League. Regular AND readers will know this of course because we’ve shared his journey in every issue since 2014 via his column on page 39. Now presenting the Premier League across the globe, his latest venture has taken him into the world of publishing with the release of his first book. How does he fit it all in? Read on…

Desire Dream Vision follows Michael’s career from wanting to become a professional footballer to reporting on his first Premier League game in 2014. Using his journey the book will show you how to put a plan into place to achieve the success you desire.

The book has been four years in the making. Since taking the stage for his first guest speech at his old school Wyvern College in Fair Oak in 2015. His Desire Dream Vision talk has evolved and to date has inspired thousands of people across the globe and now be put in to a book.

The launch was held at Peter Cooper Volkswagen in Hedge End and in a packed showroom Michael shared his vision for inspiring the next generation to follow their dreams.

The first Qipao* Show at Solent University on 15 February was viewed as a great success by organisers, contestants and audience alike. The show was organised by Southampton Qipao and Culture Association in partnership with Jiang Qipao, Wisdom Foundation and Solent University.

The programme was begun by the Chinese dragon followed by the Jiang Qipao 2019 new Qipao design dresses, with over 50 model contestants from Southampton, Liverpool, Dorset, Bournemouth and Germany participating in the show. Audiences were captivated by a fantastic display of Chinese Qipao couture in the show and also the Group performances.

To the sound of upbeat music, all eyes were on the catwalk as the spectatcle began. The first round was the Elegance group and the second round the Youth Group and Family Group. It was amazing to see all the contestants wearing Qipaos performing so well and elegantly on the stage. Particularly when for some, it was their first ever fashion show.

Using my experiences, the book lays it all out highlighting the highs and lows of what it takes to make it. A book is a great medium to inspire someone and it opens the door to imagination.

Aleksandra Krusina awarded an internship placement at Jiang Qipao in Chengdu China, including flight tickets and accommodation. Congratulations also to Millie Baker who was awarded Miss Champion of Youth Group and Mia McDonald from Germany who was named Miss Champion of Elegant Group.

Debut Album: Rock Nation HITCH THE ENIGMA. The man is full of mystery and contradiction.

Why would you want to turn your back on a nice career and a safe, harmonious life to delve instead into the shark infested world of the music business.

Even worse, why would you do it mid life when you’ve got your life ‘sorted’.

HITCH THE DREAMER. He had a dream to be a Rock singer and decided at a fairly late stage in life to realise that dream.

The dream is taking shape unquestionably and emphatically.

He has just released his debut album ‘Rock Nation’ to some critical acclaim. It has taken the best part of four years, fights, tears and finance to reach fruition but its finally here.

HITCH THE ROCKER. Speak to the man and you quickly learn that he has a very eclectic taste in music but Rock is his true love. His passion and his desire to make great Rock music for the masses is undeniable.

“I love Rock music, Classic Rock to Industrial. I grew up with all the Seventies stuff and I am just as enamoured with the modern Rock bands of this generation.”

His enthusiasm for the genre is infectious. He speaks about his

music with a fervour that would be a lesson to any budding 18 year old musician just starting out.

HITCH THE LOVER He loves life. All life. Animals and humans play an equal part in his existence.

Several years ago at his home in Cyprus, he and his wife decided to set up a safe haven for stray dogs.

It has grown from strength to strength and now houses between 50-100 dogs at any given time.

They are cared for and eventually found ‘forever homes’ in all corners of the world. It’s a rewarding but time consuming and financially draining job. Hitch’s recording proceeds will go towards The animal sanctuary which is known as MERLIN’s HAVEN.

HITCH THE TRAVELLER. He comes from a sea faring family.

He could sail before he could walk. “I love Southampton, I spent a lot of time here”. He remembers fondly, sailing on the Solent, the Boat show and of course all the pubs around Southampton and Hamble. Now years later he is back to rehearse in Southampton and prepare for the launch of his album ‘Rock Nation’. The band are all local lads who have been around the block and played around the world with some very famous names indeed.

“Southampton was an easy choice”

says Hitch. “My producer Clyde Ward (aka W3) lives here and so does my band. Add to that Kuti’s Curry house and the local ale and its game on. Easy decision”

HITCH THE FIGHTER. Not the kind of man to take ‘No’ for an answer, Hitch has set himself a goal. Despite the Music Industry changing into a ‘Reality’ driven business, underpinned by faceless men with spreadsheets and clueless opinions, he is still ‘up for the fight’.

“Music belongs to the people, we need to take it back” Hitch storms, “If there is enough of us, a nation of us, we can at least give it a good go”.

Naive? Maybe. Impossible? You tell him!

This is man who has spent his life proving people wrong. I’m keeping out of the way.

HITCH - LIVE So finally, all the talk stops and Hitch has to deliver, live.

We are at the Half Moon in Putney where the ghosts of heroes past have all been. Hendrix, Clapton, The Beatles and so on.

The Band takes the stage and the lights drop. Hitch enters and delivers a Blitzkrieg set that sends the crowd into a frenzy.

His vocals are faultless and its obvious that the man is having the time of his life. He prowls around the stage, fist raised, snarling out the lyrics.

The Band are on fire too and it makes for a great show.

Rock Nation is the song of the night and Hitch has just recruited most of the crowd for his ‘New Army’.

This was a special moment and a privilege to be part of. Hitch might not be everyone’s cup of tea but then name me a musician who is? Hitch is more Marmite than Jam. He divides opinions completely.

Love him - hate him - you can’t ignore him.

exterior makes it very distinctive. The interior is equally impressive, with the bar being an island in the middle; one of only two such pubs in Southampton. The pub sports a nearly full set of etched & bevelled decorative glass windows, any replacements being etched copies. A small stage is the focus for weekend evening entertainments with Karaoke on Thursdays, a DJ on Saturdays, and cabaret & drag acts on Fridays & Sundays – the pub is one of Southampton’s main gay pubs.

To the back of the pub is a comfortable lounge alcove, once the pool room. Oxford Street is partially pedestrianised which suits the pub’s outdoor seating on the pavement.

Beguiling, inspiring and a world renowned creative mind and political activist, Benjamin Zephaniah is one the nations best loved poets and writers. With music that doesn’t date, this alternative dance solution has been loved for over decades. As front-man, MC Spee leans on his cane, a relatable image for any old-school raver, they generate a unique mixture of Roots music and an atmosphere of a 90s rave scene, that creates timeless music filled with reggae blood pumping through its veins.

However, this man has no limits to talent and on Sunday May 26th, he dons The Brook stage with his band The Revolutionary Minds, with a Reggae and Dub Poetry vibe, which will have you dancing Rasta style whilst also thinking about how to make the world a better place!!

This man makes words make a difference and has inspired many of the new generation of rappers with his passion for politics, poetry and music. This gig will be bursting with energy, a bit of cheek and absolute ’griot'.

And joining Benjamin as support for the night is Amy True, an exciting, free thinking British born, London based, Irish/Ugandan poet, rapper, singer songwriter who creates conscious Hip Hop, Soul & Jazz in a variety of ways. She's supported acts like Rodney P, Black Twang, Slum Village, illa J, Mos Def, Immortal Tech, RA Da Rugged Man & Public Enemy to name a few. As a regular project Steve works with Winchester’s gifted International concert hall trio The Spitfire Sisters for who he is also the resident pianist and co-songwriter with band member Louisa Revolta (Not seen them? Do! Fantastic entertainment although you might have to shine your shoes as they tend to do proper venues such as Wilton's Music Hall London, Theatre Royal Winchester, Concorde, Maltings at Fareham and even The Orient Express).

Together they offer a bespoke songwriting service and over the years have written a wealth of material, including commissions for Rolls Royce, Winchester Cocktail Week and Mary Berry.

Most recently he’s recorded 3 new tracks for local keyboard legend and one of my hero’s Don Shinn. (MeddyEVILS, The Soul Agents, James Taylor and Elkie Brooks etc. He’s also cited as a major influence on the late Keith Emerson) in fact Don was one of the first people to encourage me to continue with jazz harmonica back in the 80’s. I probably owe him a pint ... or 3! Expect to hear those new tracks on AND RADIO as soon as I’m allowed) The tracks, with vocals by Louisa, are for inclusion on Don’s forthcoming 1969 album reissues on Sunbeam records.

These days everyone has a recording studio in their phone or laptop. But for those of us not blessed with the know-how to make a professional sounding recording there are of course … ‘professional’ studios.

In the Southampton region we are blessed with many. Some are superb. I've recorded sessions at dozens, both for my own projects and as a session player for others so please trust me when I tell you ‘they are not all the same’. So unless you have to, don’t make your choice simply on budget.

All studios have their own particular expertise and fields of interest and I encourage anyone interested in hiring one, to take this into account. Do the research before choosing for that all important recording. None of them (certainly not the good ones) are cheap. Value for money … yeah … and many will do deals to find a price that you can afford while still allowing them to do the job properly. Most of the engineers and producers that I know … and many are close mates … are a pretty fastidious bunch, but understand the constraints of budget. So talk to them before committing your hard earned cash. All studios are unique in their own special way. Yes the equipment is pretty similar but all the engineers, producers and studio owners (usually the same person) will be different, with their own likes, expertise and style.

So … and I’ve said this already … talk to them. You will find most, treasure troves of ideas and experiences that really can help your project.

Nowhere is the phrase ‘treasure trove’ more appropriate than at Vintage Keys Studio on the edge of The New Forest, run my old mate and keyboard genius Steve Christie. His studio setup is home to one of the largest working collections of rare and collectable organs and keyboards in the world. An absolute ‘Aladdin’s Cave’ of rare pianos and keyboards to compliment his modern kit. A museum even. He’s even got a 1941 Hammond Solovox and a 1938 RCA Beat Frequency Oscillator!

Never heard of them? Me neither. They’re true musical oddities, but they still play and he still records them! Google them. It’s worth a visit just to see them all. More importantly one might just be that missing ingredient that helps your music stand out from the rest. But if you’re simply a traditionalist, I’m not sure there are many local studios with a sweeter grand piano than Steve’s stunning 1911 Steinway.

As a musician Steve is a rarity. Perfect pitch, he can pretty much play anything he hears … or heard … once upon a time in a land far away … immediately. He’s even able to transcribe the most complex harmonies from any recording, which he does regularly for clients around the world. You hum it and he’ll play it.

Useful if you’re on a tight schedule, or not been able to work out those fab tunes in your head.

In addition to recording in person, Vintage Keys also offer remote recording. “We can produce bespoke Piano and keyboard tracks, backing tracks, ensemble recordings with session musicians if required” says Steve. “Our team can help with all aspects of music making, including songwriting, arranging, transcriptions and even scoring. We work for clients around the world, providing recordings for sample libraries, as well as multi-mic piano and keyboard recordings for multitrack insertion” And of all those ancient pianos? “Whilst we recognise the need to keep up with modern digital recording standards, we have a relaxed, informal studio atmosphere that uses as much analogue and refurbished vintage equipment as possible.

Vintage was inspired by Joe Meek's (Tornadoes) famous 304 Holloway Road studio and iconic studios such as Abbey Road and Olympic. We’ve spent many years perfecting our sound, trying to move away from clinical recordings with digital

So, if you’re looking for a unique local studio with a relaxed feel, yet facilities and expertise in abundance, you can’t really go wrong with Steve and his set-up.

As my parting shot … consider this. Who wouldn’t want to use a studio operated by someone that learned the trade from studio gods

While not alone in the ‘geek ear’ studio asset department, combine it with Steve’s experience, and Vintage Keys Studios’ bar rises to a height only a few can match. During the 1990’s as assistant engineer to Giles Martin at London’s world famous Air Studios, he worked on classical and film scores with John Luard Timperley and Geoff Foster… on pop with Simply Red, Black Crowes, Mark Knopfler, Elastica and Matt Berry, learning from production legends Gus Dudgeon, Greg Penny, Tony Visconti, Michael Vecchio and even ‘the 5th Beatle’ George Martin. Once mischievously winding up dear old Sir Elton by asking him who he was! (On reflection, that might have been a story for my ears only?) He’s also done TV work such as Space Precinct and The Word (on which he played the simple piano riff when the people in charge of the music realised they had all the equipment to do it, but had neglected to learn the keyboard part! Mmm… that might have been another for my ears only. Too late now!)

SAYS OUR VERY OWN INSPECTOR GADGET … ALLY. With our resident author recently becoming a Dad for this first time (congratulations Yarn), it has been left to the masses to make contributions to this edition. Here’s mine...

So, it’s looking a bit more like summer and the team is looking forward to our first match against Bournemouth Wanderers, this is traditionally a fixture we lose, and so we have been working hard a nets to perfect our skills. However, we have spent more time perfecting our beer drinking skills at the Southampton Arms after nets and so I fear our first game will still be a loss!! This was particularly brought home after our last net when the group managed to double up on our cheesy chips order and still polish them off.

Our main hope relies on not having enough men available so we can draw on our 12 year trio of Nathan, Luke and Jacob to score the runs, get the wickets and most importantly run around the outfield like whippets on Haribo. We keep them keen by offering them financial reward to bowl BA; they have been our most improved players and by the end of the season at least one of them will be taller than JCW, Robbo and Faz!

We can't wait for the summer to arrive! After many months of hard winter training at the Southampton Arms discussing which beers are the best, we're fighting fit for the gamesmanship the summer will hold.

On a different subject, the country’s been going a bit crazy over this Brexit thing and even our most gentle of gentle blokes has gone all protestor! Not satisfied with protesting on the streets of Winchester, Dunc joined the masses on the recent London protest. We’ve got Rob to thank for capturing his Houses of Parliament pose.

SAYS DUNC - OF POSING OUTSIDE PARLIAMENT FAME. Since Christmas, a cadre of Milbury players have made the weekly trip to the rose bowl on Thursday evenings which was only snowed off or not once. The evenings have been lively with anyone in a helmet fair game for Johnners and Jim’s bouncers. Fortunately we’ve had a group of young lads, Nathan, Jacob and Luke, offspring of regulars Jim, Ally and Alex, to swell the numbers. The boys have improved considerably and love to whizz the ball down as fast as their little yet growing legs can manage.

In the nets you have to keep your wits about you even if you’re not batting, with big hitters of Yarn, Geoffers, Johnners, Ally and ‘nice 4 skin’Jim spank the ball back a lot quicker than it arrived. Somehow though BA’s “pies” still get wickets in the nets, with the high ceilings allowing a smooth trajectory of the balls out of the blinding lights to the stunned batsmaen. The young lads can also add to their pocket money by bowling BA out.

So we are all set for the summer with a few final sessions at Twyford’s outside nets to fine tune the muscles, although Faz and I spent the last outside nets chasing some rather quick sheep around, it was the most exercise I’d ever had at nets! (They were racing sheep Dunc. Don’t feel bad mate. Ed) All followed with retirement to the Southampton arms to discuss our performance over cheesy chips and beer while watching football. The “B” word is occasionally mentioned but I’m normally shouted down.

Apart from getting ourselves fit or a little fitter we have also been over the Holt to get it ship shape for the summer. Last Sunday the sun was shining, the lads were putting a roof on the shed while Inspector Ally was trying to squeeze some life into the pitch by practicing his fast response hand brake turns on the roller. Geoffers and I were putting the finishing touches to the kitchen tiles, it

more than we lost we are looking for a new for this season. Readers why not suggest one to the editor? (Don’t you worry about targets Dunc.

Now I’ve got some glasses, things are going to get funky! Ed)

SAYS “WANT ANYTHING TAKEN TO THE DUMP?” ROB: “The Milbury's finest have raced to the scene of some long grass. Following an emergency call placed 6 weeks ago, the club’s finest and very own Miss Marple arrived to investigate the scene of the crime.

“After a lengthy stake out observing the scene of the spring growth and followed by many cups of tea, it was finally concluded that the grass was indeed ... too long! Much activity ensued at the scene of the crime and some hours later.... all was set for a good old high speed rollering of the wicket. Like a frantic movie car chase … heading off at the speed of a Brexit negotiation, order was finally restored and the grass duly put back in its place in preparation for the sounds of summer.

Namely: the clinking of glasses, birds twittering, the crack of the ball against the stumps as yet another Milburys player is bowled out for a duck and the hollering of 'quickly round boys' from BA in an attempt to galvanise some speed!

Still Desiring, Dreaming & Visioning!

The last few months have been a steady build up to the launch of my first book “Desire Dream Vision”. Five years in the making it’s been amazing to have such an great response to it. Putting the book together was such a rewarding process and self publishing has been a real challenge but one I have loved.

We had an amazing launch night at Peter Cooper Volkswagen in Hedge End with thanks to Darren Cooper and all the team. Combined with my networking group DDV Connect we unveiled it to a busy showroom so thank you to all who made it such a special night. Also a massive thank you to Martin for covering it in this months AND Guide.

I would also like to thank all the business who have supported me with our Sponsor a Book scheme, which has enabled us to have over 300 books to be donated to schools colleges and to young people aiming to achieve a dream.

You can find out more about the book and the scheme via www.desiredreamvision.com As I said the year is flying by and at the time of writing our beloved Southampton are on the up. Wins v Tottenham and Brighton have put us in a great position with seven to go. It’s been amazing to see the progress under Ralf and I’m excited to see what happens next season. With James Ward-Prowse finding form and Pierre-Emile Højbjerg leading the side with such passion I get the feeling good times are on their way back to St Marys after a difficult few seasons. We aren’t out of trouble just yet but I have the feeling we will be ok.

Down the road in Eastleigh the Spitfires are also on roll and in the play offs still battling for a place in the Football League who knows we might have another south coast team in the EFL. We are so lucky to have so many of our local teams doing well and I must also congratulate Sholing on winning the Wessex Premier League.

With the football season coming to a close the summer is shaping up to be a busy one too. I am lucky enough to be working on the Cricket World Cup which comes to Hampshire so hopefully I will see many of you at the games being hosted at the Ageas Bowl.

It won’t be long till Hampshire are back in action too in the County Championship, the T20 and lets not forget our defence of the One Day Cup. Wishing you all a fantastic few months and again a huge thank you to everyone for their support with Desire Dream Vision.

The ten Best Things About being a Saints fan

The last few years have not always been great for Saints fans and yet here we all are still supporting the team. So, we must be doing something right? On this basis here are my top ten reasons to be a Saints fan.

years we have become their bogey team. In recent times we are the team that has taken the most away points from Old Trafford. In their official history of top ten most embarrassing moments we keep popping up. Beating them 1-0 in the 1976 FA CUP FINAL which before the event was expected to be the most one sided final ever. It wasn’t would Manchester win? But by how many.

Then in the 96/97 season the 6-3 thrashing we dished out at the Dell was actually surpassed the next season by the 3-1 victory that produced the famous half time grey shirt change. Perhaps the most embarrassing moment in Sir Alex’s managerial career. Bless em.

RALPH HASENHÜTTL After 3 of the dourest managers in our history, what a relief to finally have a manager with passion and vision. His status defaulted to legendary the moment we beat Arsenal and cemented by our second north London scalp in the victory over Spurs followed by Brighton. He is a great coach and clearly getting the best out of players, as can be seen by the transformation in James Ward Prowse since his arrival. If the club back him up with player investment we can have a great few seasons. If the club learn from the Pochettino debacle we could have a great decade!

MATHEW LE TISSIER The great thing about Matt is not just that he was legendary on the pitch, it is that since his playing career has finished he’s become even more of a legend! Everyone involved in football (with the exception of a few Liverpool fans on twitter) love or respect him. His footballing talent is revered throughout Europe. (Even in Spanish legend Xavi’s house where his family was obsessed with his goals.) But what I admire most is his ongoing and public love for our club (what you mean unlike Shearer who rarely admits to playing for us or being a product of our academy? Ed) and the wry humour he brings to every interview or TV appearance he makes.

BUILDING SITES This seems at first an odd thing for Saints fans to be proud of, but bear with me. On building sites or industrial areas its quite common to see a massive Leibher crane reaching into the sky almost as high as a far post Ron Davies leap from a Terry Paine cross (Who are they? Really? Ask your Dad. Legends … and one was a World Cup winner, while at Southampton I might add). Then its almost impossible not to think of Marcus and the amazing thing he did in saving us from financial oblivion and building us into the Premiership side we currently still are. God Bless you sir. (AND so say all of us! Ed)

HAGIOLOGY Hagiology is effectively four Saints Fans who have channelled their passion for the club into writing and recording its history. David Bull,

MAYA YOSHIDA (吉田 麻也) The Captain of the Japanese football team, who did nearly as well as us at the last World Cup. He has secured 95 caps for them. On top of that he was the featured player on the cover of the Japanese version of the FIFA 14 game. For the Saints he has been a solid inspirational player with a reputation only let down when managers played him at right back. And I have just been given a copy of his biography which I can’t wait to read. A snip for £3 million (Sounds a lot for a book to me? Ed).

MANCHESTER UNITED. Okay we know they are in a honeymoon period of fan love with the departure of dour Mourinho and the arrival of the man with the strangest accent in Europe in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, but it’s only a matter of time before they fall into their usual role of the team everybody loves to hate. Which is good, because over the

THE ACADEMY We all know the great players our academy has produced and we all know that once they make the grade they will probably be lured away by the glamour, resources and financial power of other clubs. However, it is important for us to have these shining stars for as long as we can, so we the fans can enjoy their skills and then earn enough from their inevitable move to keep the conveyor belt rolling. (Think you’ve just described a farm Mr T. In fact that’s probably what Southampton FC is … a football farm. Ed)

ALI DIA It should be embarrassing but the fact that we took Matt Le Tissier off to allow somebody who couldn’t play football but could pretend to be George Weah’s cousin, to me is a badge of pride. We are not a big club - we are a family club and this is the sort of things families do, accidently inviting a stranger to a party and nobody knowing who he is or why he is there. No other club in English football has done anything so bizarre, which makes us unique. Well I say club. The blame for this surely rests on the shoulders of our manager at the time Graham Souness. Cheers Graham!

Duncan Holley, Gary Chalk and Barry Webb have between them produced wonderful books such as In That Number, Dell Diamond and Constant Paine recording the history of the club, specific moments, or the story of individual players, giving us what must be the best historical record of any football club in England. I would love to see them given the chance to curate a Saints museum somewhere at St Marys’.

PORTSMOUTH Every hero needs a nemesis and for us its Portsmouth, not Bournemouth and the phoney New Forest derby malarkey. I don’t hate them like some fans and I will enjoy if they win at Wembley equally as much as I will enjoy it if they lose. Of course seeing them get thrashed by double figures would be truly delightful.

10. HOPE In over 100 years of history we have won just one major trophy plus the Johnston Paints. Yes we came close a few years back in the League Cup but realistically and statically we won’t be winning a trophy anytime soon. But like Leicester, there is always hope. Of course this season, like last, our hope is we stay up and then win something next season.

Yeah … hope. (AND Glory. Why not?
