Whenwefirst encounteredSpanishtempranillomany yearsago,wewereoverwhelmed by its combinationof raw power and subtleearthiness.Aswestartedexploringplanting our first vineyard,wewereexcitedby thefact that tempranilloseemedsowell suitedtothesouthernOregonclimate,and inparticular,theApplegateValley wherewelive.Thefact that tempranillowaslargely unknownat thetime(at least tomost Americanconsumers)only addedtothemystiqueandappeal.Webrazenly set ourselvesonthispathandhavenever onceregrettedit.Tempranillohasproven tobevirtually aperfect matchtosouthernOregonandwehavebeenvery pleased withthewinesthat wehaveproduced.Meanwhile,wehavecontinuedtoexplore Spanishwinesandhavemadethemthefocal point for our winery Withthat in mind,wealsoplantedseveral acresof Verdejo,awhitegrapethat isthebackbone for many finewinesfromtheRuedaregioninSpain Wehavealsoplanted Grenacheand Graciano,andhaveplanstoblendthosegrapeswithTempranillo, similar towhat isdoneintheLaRiojaregionof Spain.

WINE MAKING PHILOSOPHY

Great winesarecreatedinthevineyard andthisiswhereour winemakingstarts. Terroir

Theterm?terroir?isof Frenchoriginmeaning?soil?asusedinthephrasegout de terroir (?tasteof thesoil?)torefer totheearthy flavor of somewines.However, terroir alsohasamuchdeeper,lessliteral meaning.WhenFrenchwineproducers usethetermterroir,it not only includesreferencetothetypeof soil (chalky, claylike,gravelly,sandy),but it alsoreferstovirtually all other geographicfactors that might influencethequality of thefinishedwinesuchaselevation,position relativetothesun,slope,andwater drainage.Put another way,terroir referstothe sumof theinfluencesof thenatural environment onthegrowingof grapesandthe productionof wine.RedLily EstateVineyards(All of our estatevineyardsliewithin theApplegateAppellation,whichissurroundby thelarger RogueValley Appellation.)

BEAN PATCH VINEYARD

Thevineyardwasinitially plantedwithfour acresof tempranillo(Clone1 and Duero)in2008.Thevineyardsitehasapredominantly northernaspect that rises toanelevationof approximately 1,600 feet Thesiteiscomprisedof primarily manitaloam,withsomevannoy silt loam.Manitaloamisadeep,well-drainedsoil onalluvial fansthat typically containsclay loamalongwithsomegravelly.Thename of thisvineyardstemsfromthefact that theinitial ownersof theproperty (who homesteadedtheproperty inthelate1800s),used togrow bushbeansinthis particular area.

STARGAZER VINEYARD

In2011,weplantedour Stargazer Vineyard.Comprisingapproximately 14 acres, thevineyardwasplantedwithTempranillo(Clone1,Clone5,Clone11 and Clone 12),Verdejo(Clone1),Grenache(Clone1A andClone3),andGraciano(Clone1). Thevineyardsitehasapredominantly northernaspect onavaryingslope surroundingaknoll,andsitsat anaverageelevationof 1,500 feet.Thesoil is virtually identical tothat of theBeanPatchVineyard.Thenameof thisvineyard stemsfromthefact that theelevatedknoll inthecenter of thevineyardprovides anincredibleview of thenight sky,thusaperfect placefor stargazing!

Vinifera

Viniferasimply referstograpevines.Aspreviouslydiscussed,wefocusprimarily on Spanishgrapes,inparticular,tempranillo Tempranilloistheprincipal redvarietal whichwecultivate,whileVerdejoisour principal whitevarietal.Additional informationonthesetwovarietalsisshownbelow.

TEMPRANILLO

TempranilloisSpain?sindigenous?NobleGrape?Infact,intheOxfordCompanion toWine,JancisRobinsonsaysthat TempranilloisSpain?sanswer toCabernet Sauvignon.Tempranilloisthecenterpieceof fineSpanishRiojawinesaswell asthe ?new age?winescomingfromtheRiberadel Dueroand Tororegions.

Legendhasit that Tempranillowasbrought toSpainby Frenchmonkson pilgrimagefromBurgundy toSantiagodeCompostele,andthat it isavariant of Pinot Noir.Thelatter claimhasnever beensubstantiatedandresearchindicates that it ismorelikely that TempranillooriginatedinnorthernSpainandthenspread totherest of thecountry What isnot inquestionisthat Tempranilloisthe superstar of Spanishgrapes,andonewithasometimesconfusingarray of different names,at least inSpain.Whileknownby itsinternational name?Tempranillo?inLa Rioja,it iscalled?Cencibel?inLaManchaandValdepenas;?Ull deLiebre?(eyeof the hare)inCatalonia;?TintadePais?or ?TintoFino?inRiberadel Dueroand?Tintade Toro?in,of course,Toro

VERDEJO
