this year's divisional project for 39n:

HOSPITAL HOPE BAGS This year we are partnering with Ronald McDonald House in Fort Worth. As a club we will collect supplies to make hospital hope bags for children and teenagers who are suffering with COVID-19 and other various illnesses. Being in a hospital at such a young age can be very mentally damaging, and these hospital bags are designed to give someone much needed hope and joy to continue their battle!

Our first donation drive will be on September 16 from 4-5pm. Drive through the front of the school to drop off your items! Info on what you can donate is on our website At the end of the year, all of the schools that make up division 39N will drop off the collective donations together at the Ronald McDonald House!

Thirst Project is a nonprofit organization that works with the support of young people to END the global water crisis by building freshwater wells in developing communities that need safe, clean drinking water. Key Club and Thirst Project collaborates on a campaign called “Thirsty 30” to help raise money to build water projects.

Working with other United Nations bodies, governments and nongovernmental organizations, UNICEF helps to provide for children’s needs in more than 150 developing countries through community-based services in primary health care, basic education and safe water and sanitation.

March of Dimes leads the fight for the health of all moms and babies by advocating the health of pregnant mothers and babies. March of Dimes provide comfort and support to families in NICUs, educate medical professionals and the public about best practices, and support lifesaving research. Since the 1940s, Key Clubs have worked with the March of Dimes to make a positive impact in the lives of babies everywhere.

Since 1983, Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals has helped fill those funding gaps by raising more than $7 billion. Its various fundraising partners and programs support the nonprofit’s mission to save and improve the lives of as many children as possible.

Members work together by sponsoring fundraising events and conducting service projects at their local children's hospitals.

Letter from the President Hey guys!

I’m beyond excited for the upcoming school year. Your officers have been working super hard to make it great and I’m so proud of all of their hard work. Even though the first couple of months will be online, I trust that we’ll continue our club’s dedication to service. We’ll be having more online service opportunities to make up for the shortage of inperson ones. August will be focused on welcoming new members for the upcoming school year so if you know anyone that’s interested, direct them towards our website! This year, we’re introducing some new things including a partnership with the jr. highs that will allow us to get them involved in service as well. I’m always free to listen and help in any way that I can during these uncertain times, so don’t hesitate to reach out! Stay safe and take care of yourselves and others, sending lots of love.

HELPING WFP WITH FREERICE WRITTEN BY MAKAYLA HSIEH

As normal school is being replaced by online school for the past two weeks, Martin Key Club has thought of many alternatives to in-person service events such as FreeRice and Math for UNICEF. Unlike in-person service events, online service events are a lot more flexible and convenient for members to carry out. FreeRice, in particular, is something everyone can do when they’re taking a break from classes.

FreeRice has also a new category with some important facts about COVID-19 coming from the World Health Organization to stay educated on how to protect ourselves and those around us.

Don’t be doubtful on how something small like this can bring impact to the world! On average, Freerice always generates at least the cash equivalent of 5 grains of rice for every right answer in the game. Recruitment During a Crisis Written by Bryn Kaylor During these unprecedented time, we have longed to come together more than ever, and yet we cannot. While this pandemic still puts our lives and those around us at risk, we must continually take the right precautions in order to keep others as safe as possible. Covid-19 has stretched us and molded us to care for others more than ever before. We have come together through our ideas and with motivation to persist and serve our community. As of right now, Martin High school will begin classes online on August 17th, and then our district will reevaluate the situation and make decisions within a month from the start of school. Therefore, our club that longs to serve others has now altered our methods of service to provide virtual help, while serving through a device in many different ways. This is just one change that we must make to Martin’s Key Club. Another major factor in our club is recruiting members. This year, we have had to make major adjustments in order to obtain new members to serve our community. Considering our only opportunities to make a contribution to those around us during this unique time must be virtual at this time, we have had to continuously make adjustments to our ideas for the year. Through strengthening our club, we must recruit more members to serve others. So, we have had to reroute recruitment to an online form. For our club, that has meant sharing information through our website and social media platforms. The officers for our club have had to brainstorm ideas and create online posters and graphics for advertisement. This was not a simple adjustment for our new officers. Especially recognizing that, we, the officers have not been able to gather in-person to process the changes to the new school year yet. So, we have had to conduct many zoom calls and continuously work as one to make sure this year can be the best it can be! Regarding recruitment posters, we have had to learn about new programs to use to create an online poster for our members, and hopefully soon to be members, can access our graphics. Since our entire school population is continuing with an online school option for the first month of the school year, we have not had to gear towards two sides, virtual and in person. Whereas other schools have the option to return to school with precautions or proceed with online school, AISD has made the executive decision to only provide its students with an online option at this time. Our club has taken this information and not looked at the negatives, but continued to be optimistic about our future at Martin. Currently, we only have one audience to direct towards, just online! So, our online posters and graphics are just what we need in order to recruit new members into our Key Club. Even during a worldwide pandemic, we have stayed close with one another, and we are so excited to grow even closer during a time where we cannot physically be close. We have been so eager to start this new year and are so thrilled for us to embark on this unique journey with one another, striving to continue to serve those around us a little bit differently this year.

Our Response to COVID

By Michelle Nguyen The novel COVID-19 virus has definitely taken the world by storm but that doesn’t mean key clubbers have to stop serving the community! Martin Key Club is letting members do online service projects like Free Rice, writing cards to elderly and children in hospitals, and UNICEF math quiz for hours. These service projects may be different from your typical Key Club volunteer opportunity but they’re still a great way to give back to the community. We are seeking out in-person service projects and are lucky enough to have great organizations such as Mission Arlington in our area but all members will be required to wear a mask and social-distance.Meeting during quarantine has obviously proven difficult, but we plan on holding meetings safely by streaming them on YouTube so members can tune in live or watch on their own time. We’ve been using zoom for board meetings and it’s been working out pretty well, the officers are dedicated to getting things done even if we have to meet virtually. Socials will have to be improvised a bit but we already have some ideas such as streaming a movie together and doing crafts over zoom.Because we can’t see members in real life, we had to make sure information is easily accessible. For members with busy schedules that conflict with our meeting times, we’re posting all necessary information they need on our website, newsletter, and through remind messages. We’re also taking initiative to be super active on our social medias to keep in touch with our members and supply them with information. COVID is definitely a challenge, but it’s nothing we can’t handle.

BY MADELEINE VACANTI Key Club is volunteering for people in need. It’s making time out of one’s day for helping. It’s an organization that administers aid for schools, churches, and many other groups around the city.

Some view Key Club as a way to grab service hours and better their high school résumé for future colleges to accept their nobility. Some even join just to get the honor to wear such a cool shirt.

However, to me, I see Key Club as more than a group of high schoolers occasionally working a school fair. Key Club is witnessing an influential amount of change in the community for everyone involved.

For instance, when I walked in front of the Key Club booth at First Event my freshman year, I didn’t know that I would develop a newfound interest in really being a part of the community, not just working on getting hours or building a college application. I was motivated to do something bigger than me. Simply, I had the urge to volunteer and make people happy that they are being served by a group of young adults willing to aid in any way they can. Every event I volunteered at was an opportunity to make a real difference, no matter if it was a small gesture or not because every smile and helping hand I offered led towards a brighter community and self-worth. My efforts would administer changes in schools across the district as I helped with their fundraisers and fairs, nursing homes as I socialized with the elderly, and shelters as I proffered my service to people in need. The actions that I took by volunteering granted my community, city, and neighborhood some good in the world. I made a difference every time I put on my Key Club shirt and wrote my name on a sign-up sheet; I did that. Actually, Key Club did that.

Finally, as I’ve volunteered all the way up to my senior year, I have happily transitioned into the treasurer for Key Club at Martin High School, and I have really seen how much effort it takes to raise such a renowned, supportive club. From the hours of Zoom calls debating how to continue service throughout our community to brainstorming inventive ways to motivate our members, Key Club is hard, yet rewarding work. However, it is all done for the sake of the city. That just shows how much work and dedication there is to uphold the community and its inhabitants in a sense. Not to mention, there are thousands of Key Clubs making choices to build others up and advocate to help all across the globe. Key Club does all of that and more, yet it’s more than just volunteering; it’s changing the community.
