UNDERSTANDING YOUR TAX ADVANTAGES

other than the trade or business of being an employee.

A specified service trade or business means any trade or business involving the performance of services in the fields of health, law, accounting, actuarial science, performing arts, consulting, athletics, financial services, brokerage services, or any trade or business where the principal asset is the reputation or skill of one or more of its employees or owners.

A

s was mentioned last year, the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017 (TCJA) was an extensive piece of legislation, and there were sweeping changes to all facets of the tax code.

We focused on three areas of change were highlighted a year ago. Now, to expand on some other changes: from lower tax rates to a new deduction for pass-through income.

Lower Tax Rates Under the TCJA, 2018 ordinary tax rates are generally lower than those for 2017. The top rate has been reduced from 39.6% to 37%. Also, this top rate now applies to joint filers whose taxable income is over $600,000 (as opposed to $470,000 for 2017). The remaining six rates are 35%, 32%, 24%, 22%, 12%, and 10%.

The capital gains rate structure has been left BOULDER

unchanged. Therefore, most categories of long-term capital gain are taxed at 0%, 15%, or 20%.

New Standard Deduction Versus Itemized Deductions The deduction for personal exemptions has been suspended under the TCJA. In its place is a new higher standard deduction—$24,000 for joint filers.

laneous itemized deductions subject to the 2% AGI limitation are no longer allowed.

With these changes, along with the new larger standard deduction you may no longer benefit from itemizing.

Qualified Business Income Deduction You may have heard a lot of talk about a new deduction for “pass-through” income, but it’s actually available for qualified business income from a sole proprietorship (including farm), as well as from pass-through entities such as partnerships, LLCs, and S-corporations. Under the TCJA, individuals may deduct up to 20% of their qualified business income; however, the deduction is subject to various rules and limitations.

Qualified business income means the net amount of qualified items of income, gain, deduction, and loss with respect to a domestic qualified trade or business of the taxpayer. A qualified trade or business means any trade or business other than a specified service trade or business, and

Founded in 1985 in Detroit by Jo Anne Lamun, they moved to Boulder in 1991 offering professional luncheon theatre, a full range of after school classes in theatre arts, summer theatre workshops (day camp) and a large cast summer musical. Originally housed in the Toadstool Playhouse at the corner of Mapleton and Folsom in Boulder, they eventually moved up to Lafayette at the Harlequin Center for the Performing Arts on Miners Drive. Jo Anne Lamun is the author of twelve children’s musicals and has spent her professional career working in theatre. She directs all the group’s performances, summer, holiday and Lunch Bunch, as well as teaching in the Boulder Valley Schools.

Nominated in 1999 as a Pacesetter in the Arts by the Boulder Daily Camera, she is also a Channel 7 Everyday Hero, recognized for her volunteer efforts for the Peanut Butter Players. oday I would like to once again write about wilderness, even though I wrote about it here eleven years ago. The dictionary describes wilderness as “any unsettled, uncultivated region left in its natural condition, especially a large wild tract of land covered with dense vegetation or forests.” It can also be described as an extensive piece of land set aside to “grow wild” and to be left in its natural state, controlled only by the forces of nature.

The United States was the first country in the world to establish a National Parks system that protected huge areas of wilderness. Years later, our U.S. Congress p a s s e d t h e Wi l d e r n e s s Act of 1964 that was written by Howard Zahniser of The Wilderness Society and

Washakie Wilderness was designated by Congress in 1964 and contains about 704,274 acres of rugged and beautiful countryside to the east and southeast of Yellowstone National Park in Shoshone National Forest.

signed into law by President Lyndon Johnson. It created the legal definition of wilderness and protected over nine million acres of federal land in our National Forests.

I was lucky enough to actually live for two decades at Valley Ranch in Wyoming.

We were ten miles inside the boundary of the Shoshone National Forest, surrounded by the Washakee Wilderness Area in northwest Wyoming.

Since we were only about 12 miles from the SE corner of Yellowstone National Park, our oldest, we were officially in what is referred to today as the Greater Yellowstone

Ecosystem. The May 2016 issue of National Geographic is totally devoted to this area.

It has a photo of my friend, Nick Patrick, who had been mauled by a grizzly bear while trying to save his dog that was being attacked.

It also has an article on the Yellowstone elk migration, a study by Arthur Middleton, another friend of mine. Some of these elk actually migrated through the Valley area.

You may wonder what it is like to live surrounded by wilderness. Everywhere I looked from Valley there were beautiful mountains, close-by, wild, and untouched by development…true wilderness! I felt blessed to be there. I would walk out into the meadow by our house on a full moonlight night with snow on the ground and it was total magic. At other times, with no moonlight, billions of stars were overhead…also magic.

Often there was complete silence, or maybe only the sound of blowing wind in the trees. Occasionally I would hear the howl of a coyote, then another, and another…a

chorus! That felt to me much better than the noise of city automobile traffic. Instead these were the pure sounds of nature all around me.

There were always special feelings when I would hike or ride horseback into this wilderness. It was somewhat overpowering to realize that this was an environment that humans had not messed up…that nature ruled here…. that I was just a mere creature in this wild landscape, subject to the same problems of survival as the other critters who lived here, subject to the same weather extremes…like a sudden cloudburst. These were BIG feelings because this was BIG country…hundreds of square miles of pure, untouched nature. To this day I still cherish these feelings that I was lucky to have had in my life.

I would like to quote my son David Randall Thorne who said, “The value of pure wilderness as an asset cannot be measured by human minds.” I totally agree. It’s a profound statement of the importance of wilderness in the World!

In Boulder County we are blessed with lots of nearby wilderness in the Boulder Mountain Parks, Roosevelt and Arapaho National Forests, and Rocky Mountain National Park. If you haven’t already, get out and explore these wonderful wildernesses!

BOULDER COUNTY KIDS HEALTH Immunization: Facts and Myths

F

or the last 20 years there have been many false statements about vaccinations promoted by individuals without adequate medical or scien ce background.

These false statements often times permeate the Internet and other forms of media.

This creates a challenge for parents who are hoping to gather the most accurate information in regard to their child’s health. As a longtime pediatrician in Boulder County it is important to share with you 5 of the common facts and myths about immunizations. My hope is this will educate you and alleviate some of the fears that parents may have surrounding vaccines.

1. Fact

The MMR vaccine does not cause autism.

This fear of the MMR gained traction following a long discredited study published in England in 1998. This small study of 12 children proposed a link between the MMR vaccine and autism.

The lead author was later found to have falsified his data, did not obtain appropriate consents, and was funded by lawyers who were

suing vaccine manufacturers.

Since 1998, there have been numerous studies involving tens of thousands of children across several continents that do not show any link between the MMR vaccine and autism.

2. Fact

Vaccines protect your child from diseases that are potentially deadly and can cause permanent disability.

Measles kills 1 or 2 out of 1000 children who get this disease. Half of the babies who get pertussis in the first year of life are hospitalized. 1 out of 100 of these hospitalized babies will die while 1 in 300 of these infants will suffer from permanent brain damage.

Tetanus kills 10% of those infected. 90% of infants infected with Hepatitis B will develop chronic hepatitis and 1 of 4 of them will die.

3. Myth

I don’t need to vaccinate my child because everyone else gets the vaccine.

Vaccines work not only by protecting the individual but they also promote what we call “Herd Immunity”. When

everyone gets vaccinated we can eliminate the disease from the community.

When more and more people choose not to vaccinate the bacteria or virus will come back and rapidly spread. The unvaccinated will always be at high risk of getting sick if they are exposed to these harmful bacteria and viruses.

In the US in 2018 there was a measles outbreak across 21 states. Pertussis (whooping cough) is common in Boulder county and Colorado every year.

4. Myth

Vaccines may give your child a mild form of the disease.

Vaccines do not cause the disease they are protecting you from. Today’s vaccine technology will use one of the following methods to stimulate your child’s immune system so they are protected against the disease.

1. Some vaccines may use a part of a virus or use part of a bacteria to promote immunity. 2. Some vaccines will inactivate (or kill) the virus so it can not reproduce in the body. 3. Some vaccines will weaken a virus so it does

not reproduce well in the body. In a natural infection a virus reproduces thousands of times to cause illness, in a weakened vaccine virus it can only reproduce less than 20 times so it does not cause disease.

5. Myth

Giving several vaccines at once will overwhelm my child’s immune system.

Vaccines contain protein and polysaccharide antigens.

Children create specific antibodies against these individual antigens. Infants are immediately exposed to many different bacteria during the birth process and thereafter. Babies very quickly create antibodies a g a i n s t t h e s e d i ff e r e n t bacteria and viruses that surround all of us every day. We also have trillions of bacteria that live inside our intestinal tract and on our skin and in our mouth.

Children with healthy immune systems keep these bacteria in check with their immunity. 100 years ago children received 1 vaccine (small pox) that had approximately 200 different protein antigens.

Today, children receive 11 vaccines in the first 2 years of life. Because of improvement

BOULDER COUNTY KIDS HEALTH in vaccine technology, there are only approximately 130 different antigens total in all 11 vaccines.

We are able to vaccinate against more diseases with fewer protein antigens than even 40 years ago when we only vaccinated against 5 diseases.

Parents may have more questions about specific vaccines and I would encourage you to talk with y o u r c h i l d â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s h e a l t h c a r e p r o v i d e r. I w o u l d a l s o encourage you to follow the recommended vaccine schedule as this is the best way to keep your infant and child healthy from these serious infectious diseases.

ames aren’t just useful to fill the long hours of a snow day; they teach participants of all ages about cooperation, strategy, community, teamwork and friendly competition. To explore the value of games to child development and family bonding, we spoke with Justin Biegger, Grandrabbit’s Toy Shoppe’s resident “game expert” about the power of play.

First, tell us a bit about yourself in your own words. What do you do at Grandrabbit’s, and what are your greater career goals?

How long have you been working at the store, and what experience did you have with games previously?

My title at Grandrabbit’s is Game Guy or Game Guru, and basically what that means is that I help people find games that they would love to play with their loved ones.

On a more technical day-today basis, my work basically breaks down into one of two main camps: 1. Research. I analyze gaming trends and learn the rules to all the games, forecasting which games might work well in the store.

2. Customer service. I train the store staff on how to effectively explain the dif-

ferent games we sell, and I also work with customers to help them identify and satisfy what they need or want from the games section.

In the store, we now actually have a dedicated demonstration area for games, which has been really fun and interesting. Now, our customers who are interested in a particular game, but don’t know how to how to play it, can come into the store and I can spend a couple of minutes with them breaking down the game to equip them with the best context possible to select the best game for their purposes. Plus, I get to play board games at work which is great!

What first drew you to become passionate about games? Why do you see them as integral to childhood development and interpersonal connection?

I’d always been a big player of games from a young age, but I wouldn’t say that I became passionate about games till my junior year of college when I read a book called Play by Dr. Stuart Brown. The book details some theories about why and how we play, and from there I started to research the resources mentioned in that book and really dove deep into the subject of Ludology (the study of why we play). I love that theoretical/abstract knowledge work, but the best part about Ludology is that all the practical side of the theoretical work is in regard to play, games, and sport. So, taking that knowledge base of play and putting it to realworld use working in games is a natural progression.

That’s the very short version of the origin story for me and games.

As for why they are important to childhood develop-

ment—well, I read once that we humans learn in two big ways: the first is by being informed in some way, and the second is by experiencing something first hand. Games are excellent experiential teachers. In early development games you can see this experiential learning taking place with games that have players count or do simple math to add up points. They are using math in this example as a way of attempting to win the game. Understanding the math thoroughly can mean a potential victory, so accurate arithmetic is not just an abstract concept but an objective that means something to the player in the real world.

But math isn’t the only thing that can be taught experientially! Most games involve logic or strategy of some kind that can be taught to players through play, and there are games that can

BOULDER COUNTY KIDS HEALTH teach the player about art, teamwork, subtlety, and bluffing. Games and play can teach a million different things.

So, when you have a childhood full of games and playful experiences, the opportunity to gain a lot of experiential knowledge just skyrockets.

Interpersonal connection and interpersonal skills are inherent to games. Most games involve at least two players, which means interpersonal connections are going to be made and developed in order for the game to be played. Lately, a style of game has emerged that takes that interpersonal connection and makes it the focal point.

These “Co-operative Games” have the players work together to solve a problem that the game presents. For example, a game called Forbidden Island asks the players to work together to get relics off the island before the island sinks.

What were some of your favorite games while you were growing up? Why? I played a ton of pretend out in the woods where I grew up. My family played a variant of Bridge at family gatherings, as well as other classic card games. I was also a part of the first generation to get a Gameboy so I loved the Pokemon and Legend of Zelda series as well. Looking back at my childhood it was a pretty well-rounded play history. Some outdoor social play, some alone time play, some competitive play, some cooperative play, and some electronic play as well.

cally getting some energy out. As a kid, I was driven by challenging puzzles and imagination/narrative play, so playing pretend out in the woods and the participatory stories of the videogames satisfied that impulse, while trying to figure out how to beat my Grandpa at cards was an entirely other puzzle for me to solve.

Which games in the store are you most excited about now? Why? I’ve had a list of games that I think everyone should own for years—these are proven classics or amazing new staples that I think work well for most audiences. So, I’m always excited to talk about the classic games like Ticket to Ride, Settlers of Catan, or Carcassone.

But some new games that I’m pumped about are Azul, Century Spice Road, and Luxor.

It’s exciting to introduce people into games in general. I’d say outside the classic Roll and Moves (Monopoly, Chutes and Ladders, Sorry) most people aren’t familiar with different styles of games that are out there. So it’s incredibly fun to hang out and teach folks about games that are different than what they expect.

At the end of the day I am most excited to talk about the game that is a perfect fit for the family. I feel like my biggest responsibility is to give the best context about the games so that customers can pick the best game for them.

So, my first game that I personally developed is Peek and Push, a memory and strategy game for all ages. I’ve worked in games for about 4-5 years now so a lot of the inspiration comes from asking myself, “What games do I want to play that I currently don’t see on the market?” With Peek and Push the inspiration came from the fact I’ve been unimpressed with memory games. I wanted to play a game that would use memory in a strategic way, and would be interesting to players of all ages.

Working in a toy store allows me to make similar connections with the families that come in the door. It also gives me a huge sense of pride when families come back in the store and they LOVED the game that I recommended. Procrastination is a mental habit with many different causes. It can be avoidance as in not wanting to do something because it’s onerous or boring or just plain hard. Or perhaps something a bit more complex like a late form of Oppositional Defiant Disorder where she would react negatively to being told what to do. “If I do the laundry, you win!” I’ve also read about excitement addicts who love the rush of writing a term paper the night before it’s due. And finally, perfectionists will often procrastinate, as they are afraid that they will not be able to measure up.

If your wife were writing me, this would be an easier task. Your real question should be, “How do I get my wife to want to not procrasti-

nate?” Without her willingness and desire I’m afraid the task of changing her behavior is nearly impossible.

Have you had a real discussion with her, not an argument, but a heart to heart?

Ask her if it would be helpful if you did some of these tasks with her instead of her doing them by herself. I had a friend who used to say. “It takes 2 to overcome inertia.”

Not procrastinating is a life skill that your wife has never developed or learned or chosen to ignore. But apart from helping her in a non-judgmental fashion, hoping that will break through the inertia, there is little you can do to force a solution to the problem. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is another avenue to explore. As a therapy, it is well suited to just this situation. It focuses on behavior in the here and now and very much elicits the client’s involvement.

I think there must be something seriously wrong with me. I started high school this year and both my closest friends have found boyfriends. I don’t know what it is but no one seems to be interested in me. I must have a sign on me that says “Don’t bother!”

I know that “finding a boyfriend” in high school is very important because it feels like this is the way it’s going to be for the rest of your life.

Well, that’s not true and you know it’s not because you’re a smart person. The answer is, don’t look for a

boyfriend, look for friends who are boys. Do that and it will sharpen your vision and allow you to see beyond appearance and superficiality. Do you like science?

Then hang out with the science crowd, girls as well as boys. Or, do you like sports?

Same thing holds true. Figure out who you are and what you like first, and then pursue that and the rest will follow. And that will hold true for the rest of your life.

The purpose of life, I think, is to be a little better every day. A little smarter, a little more conscious, these are goals worth pursuing. Ask yourself about those interests you have that you need to develop. Do you want to learn to dance, or sing or write poetry? Take classes, learn to play the guitar, ask yourself, “What did I learn today?” And keep a journal, which is a nice way to keep tabs on yourself. Things like how you’re feeling and what you noticed today. Yes, that’s right, hone your powers of observation and description.

Learn new words, try new tastes and read lots of books.

Soon a boy will appear who is attracted to your multifaceted personality and your charm and wit and intellect.

My mother is driving me crazy. I am a good driver, few mishaps or tickets for that matter. Every time my mother is in the car with me she gets panicky and starts to fuss. I swear she is going to cause an accident with all of her fits of fear. She even puts her foot down like she is braking in the passenger seat. God knows her driving is a menace to society but I want a more peaceful driving experi-

ence with her. Is there anything I can do?

Have you carefully asked your mother why she is so hypervigilant when you are driving the car and she is in the passenger’s seat? Don’t make assumptions, ask questions.

This is an important life rule.

Perhaps the next time you’re having a coffee together, you could ask her if anything happened in her past that is causing this behavior. Or, maybe she doesn’t trust you to know what you’re doing. Please don’t take that personally as this is your mother’s unwillingness to acknowledge that you have grown up and are no longer a child who is unable to drive. This is about her and not about you. Even if you never figure out why she acts the way she does, you’ll be able to have some compassion for her instead of annoyance. It will change the framework of the situation.

If she tells you that “she can’t help it”, offer some diversions such as a magazine or newspaper or something on your iPad that will amuse her, like a cooking show or the news. You will need her cooperation to accomplish this but you will have made a positive suggestion. There’s little we can do to change or control another’s behavior but we can control our reaction to it. The day will come when you can honestly offer her sympathy and comfort for her inappropriate and hurtful actions. You will have taken control of the situation and no longer be victimized.

ver the years of writing, facilitating workshops and speaking, I have at various times talked about the importance of expressing gratitude. I have touted the benefits of acknowledging all the gifts and opportunities presented to us. After all, a regular practice of expressing gratitude is proven to traction better than pharmaceuticals, as an anti-depressant. I have offered various tools to foster a mindset of appreciation.

how what they have done has enriched your life, playing gratitude games around the themes of colors or letters or shapes, and journaling at the end of the day about the events or things for which you are grateful.

While I have touched on the theme of self-gratitude in the past, I feel compelled to dive a little deeper. I do so at the prompting of my son with whom I have been having a series of reflective conversations about his younger years. And, because I notice the spiral of negative self-talk that some parents go through, especially when they consult with me about discord with their children, or a pain or crisis that their children are undergoing.

Sadly and often, these pained parents begin to question and blame themselves and their parenting, in hopes that if they can find what they did wrong maybe they can fix things. They easily recite past guilt-laden and shameful parenting moments. As they focus on their deficiencies,

they forget all the “good” times and the love and dedication that they have towards their children. In so doing, they fall into despair. This is a form of hyper-responsibility that in our culture can be seen as a noble act, yet, it can be counter-productive when the cause of the problem is bigger than anything created by the parent—which is usually the case. By holding onto the guilt and shame, they deny themselves the chance to be the best parents they can be.

To help the parents constructively get out of despair, I offer them empathy and perspective, and help them develop an “assets” or “what is going right” mind set.

Empathy means that I help them translate the actions that led to the crisis or discord into their and their children’s basic human needs of: physical well-being; connection and belonging, which includes respect, appreciation and autonomy; meaning & purpose; and creative expression. I offer perspective by bringing in objectivity, focusing on what actually happened—stripping away the interpretations and assumptions. To develop an “assets” mind-set, I prompt despondent parents to describe what went “right” during the crisis, and to also name their proud parenting attributes and moments.

I am a big believer of nurturing a self-loving, appreciating and respecting “assets” mind-set. Most humans have a hard time feeling hope and energy when they are down on themselves or a situation.

When I work with people to point out what is “right”, I empower a path to hope and possibilities that can inform a constructive path forward.

I would like to offer you as a reader these suggestions so you can nurture your own self-love, respect and appreciation. I trust a regular adoption of these suggested practices will help you buoy yourself, so you are more able to handle the inevitable struggles and tensions and crises of parenting and life.

Specifically, as a personal practice and a family practice, I suggest that you: • Take time everyday to write down your sources of pride. You can write about ways you lived your values and intentions, and specify your accomplishments.

• Spend part of meal and/ or driving time with your

• When somebody thanks you or pays you a compliment, say, “Thank you!”

• When you lapse into thinking of what you did wrong, write about what holds a grip of guilt or shame on you - prefacing the details with “I forgive myself for...” and come up with plan to make things right based on your strengths and assets.

Encourage your children to do the same.

Give yourself and your children the gift of selfappreciation. I trust it will create resilience in your relationships with your children.
