SUPES\A

Our Summer Issue Cover was painted by 10-yearold artist, Viggo! The painting is titled "The Ice Cream" (emphasize on the The), and Viggo says he had a lot of fun painting it while at Tinker Art Studio. Viggo is going from 4th to 5th grade this year, and although he's excited for 5th grade, he's mainly excited for summer. This summer, Viggo plans to hit the pool and playhis favorite video game, Minecraft.

Viggo lives in Louisville with his little sister, Shajaira, and two fur babies - Pickles (a chihuahua mutt) and Ziggy (a chorkie: chihuahua-yorkie).

Louisville is also where his favorite restaurant, 740 Front, is located. His favorite food is teriyaki steak. Viggo gave up candy in 2023, but he's dreaming about the dayhe can eat Smarties Gummies again. In his free time, Viggo plays the electric guitar. He knows how to play acoustic guitar too, but prefers electric because it's easier for him, which makes sense because Viggo's favorite music is classic rock - particularly "Black Dog" and "Sweet Child O' Mine". He hasn't seen it yet, but he thinks the new movie, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, is going to be his new favorite. Viggo's favorite TV to watch is anime, especially the show Naruto.

Viggo always plays basketball and wants to be an NBA player when he grows up. Or an artist. Or a guitar player!

Thank you, Viggo, for letting us use "The Ice Cream" for our Summer Cover!

Thankyou to our cover sponsor, TinkerArtStudio, for submitting "The Ice Cream"along with other beautiful pieces (somefeaturedon theright)! Formore information about TinkerArtStudio, please head to their listings in the Affer School, Birthday Party, and Camps Directories.

HOW TO PLAN TIIE PERFECT SIJMMER PARTY

As a chef, restauranteur, and a father above all, I have thrown my fair share of parties over the last few decades! From intimate gatherings to large-scale events to birthday extravaganzas, I have seen it all. These experiences have allowed me to deeply understand how meaningful these events can be, especially for our children. Many of us have memories of our favorite childhood parties, and often times, those events stand out for a simple reason: they were creative! Creativity does not have to mean extravaganee.

Trust me when I say you can throw an incredible event for your children without breaking the bank.

As Colorado residents, why not take advantage of the perfect summer event space that's right in your backyards? With the stunning mountain backdrops, warm sunshine and plenty of parks and open space to choose from, Boulder County makes for the perfect destination to throw an outdoor party that will be remembered for years to come.

With location in mind, here are some ideas to help you get started on activities:

Have a salsa-making contest: For a fun and engaging activity that doubles as a tasty treat, consider setting up a salsa-making station. Simply provide a selection of fresh ingredients like tomatoes, onions, cilantro, different types of fruit and lime juice, and let the kids get creative with their own unique salsa recipes. Host a friendly competition to see whose salsa reigns supreme. Offer prizes for the winners, and enjoy the delicious salsas with a side of chips or tacos.

Keep an eye on the weather!

Of course, if you are planning anything outdoors, make sure to have a backup plan in case of inclement weather. This is Colorado, after a11! Consider renting a tent or having an indoor backup location in case of rain or extreme heat.

Make ice cube pinatas: Start by freezing small toys or candy into ice cubes. Kids can then use toy hammers or utensils to break open the ice cubes and discover the hidden treasures inside. This is a fun and unique activity that will keep kids entertained and cool at the same time.

0Create your own photo backdrop: Create a DIV photo backdrop by hanging streamers, balloons or a colorful sheet as a background in a well-lit area. You can also add props like hats, glasses or mustaches for the kids to use in their photos. Make sure to have a camera or smartphone ready to capture all the fun memories!

By incorporating these ideas into your party planning, you can create a celebration that both kids and adults will love. I am passionate about helping families create unforgettable experiences, and with Boulder's stunning natural beauty and warm summer weather, the possibilities for an amazing outdoor party are endless!

What is an au pair? An au pair is an educated young person from abroad who lives with you in your home for up to two years, cares for yourchildren and becomes a part of your family.

Flexibility An au pair can provide up to 45 hours per week of childcare on a schedule you decide, including early morning, evening and weekend coverage.

Trust Because an au pair lives in your home, mutual trust develops more quickly than with a daycare provider or nanny.

Culture Au pairs come from many countries all over the world and can share their language and culture with your family, fostering a sense of curiosity and global perspective.

KIDS' PLANET with Thorne Nature Experience

Do you know the difference between a Common RavenandanAmerican Crow? Wehave bothofthesebirdspeciesinthe Boulderarea, so you need to be able to tell them apart. For example, a raven is much larger than a crow and has a heavier beak (see photograph). A raven also has a "shaggier" head. Don't worry, I'm not goingtotellyoua"Shaggy Ravenstory!"

Anotherway totellthemapartisbytheirvoice. You have probably heard a crow's "caw-cawcaw,"usuallyloudandclear, repeatedthreetimes or more. Sometimes their notes are short. Sometimestheyarelonganddrawnout. Araven, ontheotherhand, soundslikeahoarsecrow, ora crowwithbronchitis! Ravencallshavea"gargle"

sound, usually at a lower pitch than a crow. I wish that you were standing in front of me right now because I can makeboth ofthese calls with my voice!Soif you're ever visiting Thorne Nature Experience, ask to see me and say, "Hey Oak, make calls like a raven and a crow." Ravens will often make other kinds of sounds, too. Some of these are rather weird. Ravens and crows can apparently communicate witheachotherthrough theirvocalizations.

At Thorne, we have a "stuffed" (taxidermied) raven, and also a raven's nest, in our classroom. People often ask us where we got this nest. One ofourteachersbroughtitback fromtheWestern Slope. Ithadbeenbuiltbyaravenintheirfriend's barn and they were about to tear it down since the birds had finished nesting. Instead, our teachercarefullytookitdownintact, placeditina big tarp, and brought it back to us. We built a specialshelfandputthenestonit.

Theshapeofthetailis verydifferentbetweena raven and a crow (see illustration). A raven has a wedge-shapedtailandacrow'stailisfan-shaped.

Crow

This difference is very clear when they are flying overhead.

Ravens and crows are very smart birds. They have even been known to solve problems. When I was a boy, I had a pet crow. It had fallen out of a nest somewhere when it was still very young, so I took ithome andgaveitfoodand water. For food, Iground upsomedog chowcheckers and made a soft paste that I could dab on the end of my finger and stuff in the crow's open mouth whenever it called outto be fed, which was often. That kept me very busy at times. I taught it to say "hello" (sort of a "yell-oh," likesomebody fromthe Midwest) and also "boy oh boy." My crow even learned to laugh. I think it was mimicking me! I just thought that it had a good sense of humor! I was convinced that my crow was indeed very intelligent.

Crows are often found in flocks, sometime very largeflocks. Thisis what werefer to as "a murder of crows," like we might say "a flock of geese" or "a school of fish." On the other hand, ravens are often found alone or in pairs, but sometimes in small groups. In the spring, they can be very playful. I'll often see a pair of ravens diving and playing with each other in the sky. Sometimes there are several ravens joining in this "game," like abunch ofschoolkids ontheplayground!

I hope you will keep an eye out for ravens and crows in your area and learn to appreciate them asbeing very special. They are tome!

books celebrating NEV1.0t>IVEI.SITY

We at The Wandering Jellyfish Bookshop (TWJ) emphasize diversity, of all typesbeyond the classic examples of sex/gender and race/ethnicity, we want our little space to be a sanctuary for those with different philosophies, abilities, and more. As we make our way through both Celebrate Diversity and Autism Acceptance Month, we've been thinking a lot, specifically, about neurodiversity.

Everyone learns differently-even if you fall within the confines of "normalcy" (whatever that means) maybe you're a tactile learner or a visual learner. Abdul has all these wonderfully creative ideas, but he just can't seem to get it down in an

Middle grade readers are, perhaps, the most frequent visitors in our little Niwot shop, so we've got two picks for this crowd. The first is a bit of a throwback: Rick Riordan's Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief Riordan has been very open about his own experiences with his son being tested for ADHD and dyslexia. He explained that while going through the process, his son was getting frustrated and often felt badly that he was having difficulties focusing and learning to read. After conducting a ton of research (and drawing on his own experiences as an educator) he discovered a desire to empower children like his son.

In an interview. he said. "Dyslexic/ADHD kids are creative, 'outside-the-box' thinkers. They have to be, because they don't see or solve problems the way other kids do Making Percy ADHD/dyslexic was my way of honoring the potential of all the kids I've known who have those conditions. It's not a bad thing to be different. Sometimes, it's the mark of being very, very talented. That's what Percy discovers about himself in The Lightning Thief."

For chapter books, Elana K. Arnold's A Boy Called Bat is actually a perfect selection. Bixby Alexander Tam (aka Bat) experiences a major life change when his mother brings home a baby skunk who needs help before he can be released from her care. The two develop a lovely friendship, which is especially vital for Bat because he faces challenges at school, in part because of his being on the autism spectrum. If you're looking for a beautiful story of friendship in the face of other social difficulties, this is the book for you and your kiddo.

I Our last pick to celebrate neurodiversity this month is Just Roll With It by Lee DurfeyLavoie. This graphic novel follows Maggie as she enters middle school, which is already tough, but because of her anxiety and OCD, sometimes daily life can be particularly stressful for Maggie. At its core, Just Roll With It is a compassionate story about learning to trust yourself and finding healthy ways to help you through challenging moments.

It's heartwarming and encouraging to see more and more subtle and overt books about neurodiverse characters and by neurodiverse authors. Kids, and adults for that matter, learn about and shape our world by way of the media we consume. So, to have a more inclusive literature landscape is vital to personal and community growth. We hope this list has sparked some interest in books by and and about individuals coming from different backgrounds, and always feel free to ask your local bookshop for more recommendations. We love finding and sharing stories, especially ones that help people feel seen!

Hannah Stewart - Born and raised in Colorado, I spent much of my childhood reading, crafting stories, and consuming a ton of media-books, film, radio, you name it. At Niwot High School, a stint as an extemporaneous speaker (we had to write seven minute speeches without the internet) sparked an interest in journalism. I followed this spark at CU, where I majored in communication and minored in both journalism and Spanish.

Now, I'm a writer at CU's College of Media, Communication and Information and focus on undergraduate student news. also work part time at Niwot's own Wandering Jellyfish Bookshop, manage a book blog, and write for the Left Hand Valley Courier. When I'm not reading or writing, I'm probably doing yoga or playing with my German Shepherd Lily!

At Snow Lion Preschool we cultivate a community and environment that values process over product, exploration, compassion and loving kindness. Our community holds deep respect for impermanence, flexibility, interdependence, cause and effect, and joy.

Snow Lion began in the autumn ofl995 as a small playgroup of three children. It quickly evolved, and after 27 years under the leadership and vision of Kristin Lhatso, Rachel Flax Kaplan took over to continue Kristin's legacyin 2022. Snow Lion Preschool is a communityof over fiftychildren withhundreds of alumni children and their families.
