Summer is (seriously) here!

Welcome to summer here at Hardware & Homestyle! It’s the season when the trade comes into its own as we always say; although that is, strictly speaking, any time of the year really!

Depends on how you look at it – and we try to take the broadest view, as always!

Yet, it is at this time of the year that merchants’ displays can really transform the look – and ambience too – of streets and avenues in our towns, cities and villages.

Colourful displays of items, ranging from the purely practical to the highly decorative, herald the warmer days and the draw of the room outside – and the pull of those maintenance tasks that have perhaps taken a backseat during colder times.

And so it is that what we refer to as ‘amenity horticulture’ looms large – alongside gardening maintenance, cleaning, exterior painting and…well, even more maintenance!

(Let’s face it; this is the chance to get those exterior projects done and the winters always seem so long!)

It’s a heady mix to squeeze in and it can make the head spin sometimes.

Our job is to see that the items people need are there to support this, that they are ready to go when the window of opportunity we call ‘the Irish summer’ opens, however briefly!

It’s also to inspire, and of course, to advise. This is what is so special about what we do. And the empowerment of householders to create the spaces they aspire to is not a responsibility taken lightly.

Our suppliers have a range of items to help of course and in this issue we see once again what’s caught our eye – alongside all of our regular features!

Talk to you soon!

‘Serious

cause concern for SME’s arising from Personal Injuries Claims’

ISME make recommendations in response

News from the Central Bank that almost 70% of personal injuries claims are going through litigation is shocking but is not surprising to business owners, said the ISME.

Recommendations

‘Despite the fact that the Personal Injuries Resolution Board (PIRB) makes awards recommendations in line with the Judicial Council recommendations for the same amount of damages and in one third of the time it takes cases to go through the courts, we continue to see large volumes of litigation through the courts,’ continued ISME.

This litigation is evidently not in the financial interest of plaintiffs.

The Central Bank figures came a week after ISME revealed that the number of personal injuries actions going through the Irish courts exceeds the number going through the courts of England and Wales combined, despite the fact that the Irish population is 12 times smaller.

The number of defamation cases in Ireland also exceeds that in England and Wales.

Systemic

‘Ireland demonstrably has a systemic problem with the amount of civil

litigation going through its courts system.

‘It makes no sense that a common-law jurisdiction of Ireland’s size is generating more civil litigation than that of England and Wales.’

Business marks 11th annual National Workplace Wellbeing Day

Businesses in our sector recently took part in the National Workplace Wellbeing Day once again.

Activities

With up to 1,000 companies participating annually, the day provides a unique opportunity for businesses across Ireland to celebrate with a range of health and wellbeing activities in the workplace.

It also offers a moment to rebalance and refocus on the supports that will benefit employees’ social, mental, and physical wellbeing.

This focus is more important than ever: recent research published by Ibec shows 69% of Irish workers say their attitude to workplace wellness has become more important in the past 2–3 years, while 28%

have noticed increased investment and focus by their employer.

Index

As part of this year’s activity, Ibec launched the ‘Top 100 Companies Leading in Wellbeing’ index in association with the Business & Finance media group.

The index recognises the top 100 businesses of all sizes for their exceptional contribution to employees’ social, mental, and physical wellbeing.

The index recognises the top businesses of all sizes who are leading the way when it comes to employee wellbeing.

Each of the companies selected have improved their performance in supporting employee mental health and wellbeing and their commitment to fostering a positive

and supportive workplace culture.

Congratulations

Ibec CEO Danny McCoy said: ‘I would like to offer congratulations to the companies included in the top 100 index.

‘These are companies that have consistently demonstrated their strategic approach to and understanding of wellbeing in the workplace.’

‘Counter productive’ - 96% of tradespeople say they have had to step

in to fix a DIY kitchen fit

New

research from The Panelling Centre reveals DIY kitchen nightmares

The majority (96%) of tradespeople say they’ve had to step in to fix a DIY fitted kitchen and almost half (40%) say only some kitchens fitted by homeowners themselves adhere to the correct safety standards.

That’s according to new research from The Panelling Centre.

The research, which was carried out among 100 tradespeople and 750 homeowners, examines attitudes to DIY kitchen fitting versus hiring a professional to do the job.

The right fit

According to The Panelling Centre poll, while 42% of homeowners who have

either installed a kitchen themselves or know someone who has, believe the job was done successfully, the professionals disagree.

Taking incorrect measurements (48%) and not consulting a professional for layout / design guidance (42%) are, according to tradespeople, the most common mistakes homeowners make when attempting to fit a kitchen themselves.

It seems that homeowners also admit to underestimating key parts of the project with measurements (50%), plumbing (47%) and electrical work (44%) the aspects of a kitchen fit that homeowners have misjudged.

No surprise

Given that the kitchen is the heart of the home for many, it’s perhaps no surprise then, that for two thirds (66%) of homeowners polled, they’d rather leave a kitchen fit to the professionals, calling on a tradesperson to do the job instead. Hiring a tradesperson not only ensures that a kitchen fit doesn’t just save time (48%), avoids mistakes (44%) and makes

sure electrical and plumbing are installed safely (44%), the top reasons why homeowners choose a pro; it also makes sure the space doesn’t need a ‘fit check’ after.

Findings

Commenting on the research findings, Gary Higgins, General Manager at The Panelling Centre said:

‘We love a bit of DIY spirit, but kitchens are one place where ambition can sometimes exceed ability.

‘The research reveals that most tradespeople have been called in to keep a homeowner’s DIY dream alive, and we’ve heard they’ve seen everything, from upside-down cabinets, to sinks with no plumbing!’

Easier

Achieving a picture-perfect, fitted kitchen that’s ready to show off is something all homeowners want, and is a whole lot easier with experts by your side.

AIB Ireland Construction PMI® Construction activity rises on the back of sustained new order growth

Broad-based improvement in construction activity. Second successive rise in employment

Construction activity in Ireland continued to increase as the second quarter of the year got underway as companies responded to sustained new order growth.

Employment and purchasing activity also increased, while companies remained optimistic regarding the year-ahead outlook, despite some worries from panellists regarding the impacts of US trade policy.

On the price front, firms recorded a further sharp rise in their input costs during April.

Consecutive

The headline seasonally adjusted AIB

Ireland Construction Total Activity Index posted 52.4 in April, down from 53.9 in March but still above the 50.0 no-change mark and signalling a second consecutive month of growth in Irish construction activity.

Those firms that saw activity increase linked this to improving customer demand and an associated increase in new orders.

Indeed, new business expanded for the third successive month in April, with the solid pace of growth little-changed from that seen in March.

The rise in construction activity was broad based across the three categories covered by the report.

Expanded

The fastest increase was in commercial activity, which expanded for the third month running and at a solid pace, albeit one that was softer than in the previous survey period.

Civil engineering activity, meanwhile, rose at the fastest pace since February 2022.

The slowest increase in activity was on housing projects, but growth has now been sustained in the residential category for eight months running.

With new projects getting underway,

construction firms again felt the need to hire additional workers in April.

Stronger

Employment rose for the second month running, and at a slightly stronger pace than in March. The usage of subcontractors also increased, following a first fall in seven months in the previous survey period.

April also saw sustained growth of

purchasing activity, while suppliers’ delivery times lengthened as staff shortages meant that vendors struggled to keep up with rising demand for inputs.

Improving demand for materials often resulted in suppliers hiking their prices in April, with the rate of input cost inflation remaining sharp and above the series average during the month.

Sub-contractor rates also increased rapidly, and at the fastest pace for a year.

Combilift and CMETB Celebrate 10 Years of pioneering engineering traineeship

Recently we saw a landmark celebration at Combilift’s global headquarters in Monaghan, marking the 10th anniversary of the highly successful OEM Engineering Traineeship – a collaborative initiative between Combilift and the Cavan and Monaghan Education and Training Board (CMETB).

Evolution

The event, which welcomed past graduates, current trainees and local educators, underscored the programme’s evolution from a local skills initiative to a cornerstone of regional industrial development.

Launched in 2015, the OEM Engineering Traineeship was born from a shared vision to tackle the skills gap in engineering and manufacturing with an industry-led approach.

Today, with over 150 trainees having passed through its doors to achieve a QQI level 5 qualification, and with job placement rates above 80%, the programme stands as a model for how industry and education can collaborate to mutual benefit.

Combilift, a global leader in materials handling solutions, has been central to this success.

Primary

As the primary industry partner, Combilift has not only provided cuttingedge workplace experience but also ensured the course content remains aligned with real-world demands.

‘We wanted to create more than just a training programme; we wanted to build a pathway into meaningful careers,’ said Combilift’s Martin McVicar.

‘This traineeship has delivered exactly that, time and time again.’

of sawn wood, panels, or engineered wood products in confined indoor or outdoor environments.

Key timber-focused benefits include:

• Powerful, emission-free operation: Twin 18kW drive motors provide the torque and responsiveness required for heavy packs, with all-electric performance suited for indoor timber stores.

• Patented traction and steering: Designed for year-round reliability in muddy or uneven yard conditions.

• Unrivalled operator visibility: The under-deck battery position and expansive glazing allow operators a clear line of sight, especially when reversing in narrow racking aisles or busy sawmill loading areas.

• Quick battery change: Ideal for multi-shi operations in busy timber yards.

Fleet managers also benefit from CombiConnect, Combili ’s advanced telematics

system for real-time machine performance tracking and maintenance planning.

Combi Load Xtender – gamechanging one-side loading for timber yards

Unveiled alongside the sideloader, the Combi Load Xtender is a new pantographstyle load extender that enables complete loading and unloading of trailers or rail wagons from a single side – a major advantage in timber yards where space is tight or trailer access is limited.

For timber operations, the Xtender delivers:

• One-side access: Load full packs of timber from one side only, removing the need to move trailers or access both sides.

• Ultra low mechanism height: Its ultra-compact design ensures smooth movement and full functionality below standard trailer height without interference.

• Enhanced safety: Operators can

load securely against the far closed side of the trailer, reducing the risk of products falling and keeping personnel out of busy tra ic zones.

Purpose-built for the timber industry

‘These new solutions were developed in direct response to what we’re hearing from the timber sector,’ said Martin McVicar, CEO, Combili . ‘Customers need to move larger loads in tighter spaces with greater safety and lower emissions.

‘The FSE 8000 and Combi Load Xtender do just that – and they’re backed by Combili ’s proven track record in long-load innovation.’

Both products are now available for order.

Founder and Creative Director of Mud Australia, Shelley Simpson, discovered her love for ceramics 31 years ago when she used her friend’s pottery wheel. The experience ignited a spark that led to a passion for creating beautiful handmade ceramics and the seed of the much-loved Australian company was planted.

Making magic at Mud Australia

Mud Australia was one of five retailers around the world named as an IHA Global Innovation Awards (gia) Global Honoree for Retail Excellence at The Inspired Home Show in Chicago in March.

Program

The gia program is sponsored and organized by The Inspired Home Show and the International Housewares Association (IHA).

‘I’ve always believed that if you love what you do, you never work a day in your life,’ says Shelley.

‘Starting Mud Australia wasn’t just a career change, it was a meaningful redirection,’ she says.

‘My partner James and I have always been creative, and it gave us the space to build something with heart.’

Inspired

So many of Mud’s pieces were inspired by everyday needs when the couple’s children Violette and Spencer were young, and now the siblings also work at the company.

‘Having the family involved feels like a natural continuation, and it’s incredibly special,’ says Shelley.

‘Function and purpose were at the heart of it all, and it’s lovely to see how those early ideas shaped what Mud is today.’

The steady growth of Mud Australia

The first Mud store opened 18 years ago, and the company now has 12 stores across the world, all with solid communities built around them.

Personal service is one part of creating, maintaining and nurturing those communities.

‘When people first step into a Mud store, it can feel a little overwhelming as we have 19 colours,’ Shelley explains.

Right

‘But our team is there to walk people

HOMEFRONT

through the process and help them to find what feels right.’

‘We never want the experience to feel transactional.’

‘Ideally, by the time a customer leaves, it feels like they’ve just spent time with friends.

‘There’s a warmth, a sense of ease and connection we hope they carry with them. Something memorable beyond the product itself.’

Although the ceramic products – all created with porcelain clay from Limoges, France – are the stars of the show, Shelley says that what makes Mud such a great place to be, is the people.

‘There’s a shared passion and care that runs through the business. We’re all invested, and that creates a special energy,’ she says.

Captures

Shelley shares a story from Mud’s New York store that captures that caring nature of the company and its staff.

‘A cab driver came in every couple of weeks, always quietly and consistently,’ she says.

‘Over time, we learned he was collecting pieces for his new wife. It was an arranged marriage, and she hadn’t arrived yet.

‘He wanted their kitchen to be beautiful and welcoming when she did. It was such a thoughtful act, and it really moved us.

‘That kind of care and intention is something we all feel deeply.’

Principles

Sustainability is another pillar of Mud’s guiding principles. ‘From the beginning, we’ve been conscious of waste, especially in how we manufacture,’ Shelley says.

‘Over time, as the business has grown and we’ve had more resources, it’s become something we actively prioritize.

‘Every time we develop a new product or open a new store, we ask ourselves how we can do it better and more responsibly.’

Oversee

Manufacturing is all done at Mud’s own facility in Australia.

‘This means we can oversee every step of the process, minimizing waste at the same time as making sure our values are reflected in what we do,’ says Shelley.

‘We are proud to not only be a carbon neutral company since 2020, but also climate neutral – which means we account for all GHGs in addition to carbon dioxide.’

Becoming a gia Global Honoree

Shelley explains that the gia application process gave the team time to pause and look at how far they’ve come.

‘It’s easy to get caught up in the momentum of day-to-day operations, so taking that step back was grounding and inspiring,’ she says.

Despite the company’s solid growth and reputation, being honoured as one of the best retailers in the world came as a

surprise.

‘When you’re deep in the day-to-day building of a business, and celebrating 30 years on top of that, you’re not thinking about awards,’ she says.

Lovely

‘To receive a gia award was an unexpected and truly lovely recognition, especially for our incredible retail sta who bring so much to what we do.

‘It’s a meaningful recognition of the work we’ve put in over the years, and it reinforces that our values – quality, sustainability, and thoughtful design – resonate beyond Australia.

‘Our team was thrilled at the win, and there was a real sense of pride.

‘We also had so many kind messages from our customers, so it felt like a shared win – not just for us as a business, but for the whole Mud community.’

Participating

Shelley says that attending The Inspired Home Show and participating in the gia awards program was a real eye-opener.

‘It was inspiring to see so many likeminded people coming together, each with their own unique story and approach,’ she says.

‘Being surrounded by other winners, the gia experts and industry leaders gave me a fresh perspective on how we can evolve while staying true to our roots.

‘It also reinforced the importance of community and collaboration.’

Connection between people, products and stories

Shelley explains that social media is incredibly important for Mud Australia.

HOMEFRONT

‘It’s a key channel for connecting with our community and showcasing the cra smanship behind what we do,’ she says.

‘Combining product with storytelling resonates with our community.’

One highly successful video series showcased the making process, not just the final product.

‘People loved seeing the behind-thescenes work and understanding the care that goes into each piece,’ Shelley says.

‘We also did a “meet the team” feature, which helped put faces to the brand and connect people to the human side of Mud.’

Connect

Although its online presence continues to grow (Mud has more than 80,000 followers on Instagram and 10,000 on Facebook), Shelley believes that people will always want to connect in person.

‘There’s something timeless about being able to pick something up, feel the weight of it, have a conversation about it,’ she says.

‘Online is convenient and it’s an important part of our business, but we’re always looking for ways to bring people back into the physical store, to create a sense of community and experience.

‘That’s where the real magic happens.

Hands-on

‘We’re very much a hands-on business and that will never change: our products are made by hand, and that human touch is at the heart of everything we do,’ says Shelley.

‘However, we’re also practical, and if automation or AI can help us with production planning and supporting our team, we’re open to it.

‘We use technology to enhance the

Mud Australia has such a strong brand because for three decades, the focus has always been on doing one thing well: creating beautiful, handmade ceramics.

‘Within that, there’s room to explore, innovate and o er a considered variety of pieces.

‘Ultimately, it all started with what I needed personally – a product that was both functional and beautiful – and that continues to guide us today,’ Shelley says.

2026 colour trends will say ‘welcome home’

Colour Expert Lee Eiseman Shares Insights on Pantone® View Home + Interiors 2026 Forecast 2025

As consumers around the world continued their search for balance and beauty in their homes and lives, colour expert Leatrice (Lee) Eiseman explained to The Inspired Home Show® 2025 attendees the reasons why ‘Welcome Home’ was selected as the theme of the Pantone® View Home + Interiors 2026 forecast.

The seven palettes, which were unveiled at the Show, were on display in the Pantone ColorWatch display.

Eiseman is a colour specialist whose expertise is recognized worldwide as the executive director of the Pantone Color Institute and director of the Eiseman Center for Color Information and Training.

Human needs

In explaining the ‘Welcome Home’ theme, Eiseman said: ‘These are two words, when used together, that express the most deep-seated and intrinsic human needs.

‘It’s a theme that’s highly relatable and well understood, as a welcoming home provides the roof over our heads, whether it be a condo in the city, an expansive loft that has reminders of its industrial origins or the relaxed elegance of a country cottage with a

revisit to not so shabby chic.’

The 2026 colour trends will be deeply rooted in the past, according to Eiseman, with a mixing of different eras.

‘When people are uncertain about the future, they invariably look to the past,’ said Eiseman, quoting Vanessa Friedman, fashion director of The New York Times.

Influenced

Eiseman told the full-house crowd that the 2026 palettes were also heavily influenced by the 2025 Pantone® Colour of the Year, Mocha Mousse, which she described as an ‘evocative, soft brown that transports our senses into thoughts of pleasure and deliciousness’.

She reminded attendees: ‘If you can get a colour to evoke an emotion that involves the senses and you involve more than one sense, it really captures the human eye.’

Eiseman then explained each of the seven palettes in the Pantone® View Home + Interiors 2026 forecast, sharing how they take existing elements to make the palette fresh and modern.

‘The home needs to provide a functional and organized workspace for us to live within, but also for us to make a living in,’ she said, offering a variety of palette options for different lifestyles and play styles.

HOMEFRONT

‘If you can get a colour to evoke an emotion that involves the senses and you involve more than one sense, it really captures the human eye.’

The seven home palettes for 2026 are:

• Out of the Ordinary – Eiseman calls this ‘Scandinese style’, blending time-honoured Scandinavian and Japanese design principles. The palette includes familiar neutral colours with a few warmer ones that are ‘out of the ordinary’ to represent the imperfect beauty of nature. This palette embraces homeostasis, where a balance of warmth and coolness helps to regulate the temperature of the person living within that environment.

• Ancestral – This palette is designed to remind people of our human heritage – think caves and early native dwellings with raw, earthy warmth. This palette largely has warm colours, with some cooler colours, like neutral gray, and is a warmer alternative to black and white.

• Modern West – This is where Western classic meets modern style and cowboy/cowgirl couture. Browns are balanced by green – a neutral colour in nature. Global influences from countries like Argentina, Australia and the Czech Republic add some brightness with turquoise. This palette is also influenced by indigenous patterns and authentic Western embellishments.

• Augmented – In this palette, surreal and abstract design is inspired by AI, as well as immersive and digital experiences. This is a vibrant combination of reds, pinks, oranges and yellows, with blue and gray to balance the brightness.

• Rustic Revival – This is all about sustainability and industrial design with a so er, outdoor cabin feel. It’s a muted, subtle palette with sienna and gray tones that represent transforming waste into functional home elements.

• Exotic Retreat – Eiseman says this palette is perhaps the most fun. It touts nature’s maximalism with vibrant colours and is a beautiful balance of cools and warms, including fuchsia, purples and browns. With tropical glamour meeting boho paradise, it helps to bring vacation colour and design back home.

• Futura – Inspired by the cosmos with celestial motifs and galactic influences, Futura is minimalist and high tech. But it’s not cool like you might think, said Eiseman. There are nuances of colour that add a bit of warmth.

How is life outdoors changing? Which trends are determining the design of gardens, terraces and balconies? As we get ready to go to press spoga+gafa is getting ready to present the latest garden lifestyle innovations.

spoga+gafa 2025: Trend report – garden furniture and decoration

The current outdoor furniture, accessories, lighting and shading solutions will be presented at the biggest garden and BBQ trade fair in the world.

We’ll have further reports on themes and trends that emerge this year of course.

This year the focus is on the theme ‘Design Gardens’. It examines forward-looking design trends of the garden industry.

Free space is living space: Inviting garden design

The outdoor area is becoming the second living room – a trend that is shaping modern garden collections.

Whether on the terrace or on the balcony:

Outdoor furniture is convincing with inviting design, rounded shapes, soft cushions and materials with a nice haptic feel.

Warm, muted colours and hand-made plant pots are creating a comfortable atmosphere.

Retro-look sunshades provide atmospheric lighting and dimmable outdoor lights charming accents.

Timeless modern: Reliability in design

Modern and yet timeless – what seems like a contradiction, reflects the current design demand for garden furniture. It is about reliability, regarding both waterproof materials and the design of the furniture itself.

Without fashionable accessories clear shapes and ergonomic lines characterise the design of the ‘green living room’.

This approach is further accentuated with the use of reliable and robust materials like natural wood, leather or concrete. Durable solutions not only contribute towards outdoor comfort, but also preserve resources.

Elegant lightness: Relaxed outdoor feeling

Times are challenging, so a more relaxed and care-free life in the

SHOWTIME

garden is welcome.

Current design for outdoor furniture stands out with a filigree lightness that exudes both naturalness and elegance.

Thin lines and organic shapes are united harmoniously with earthy tones and soft, reserved colours.

Discrete red shades also reflect the wish for harmony or accessories in warm brown shades of the pantone colour of the year 2025 ‘mocha mousse’.

Carefully designed teak wood trimmings and low dining chairs are reminiscent of the elegant design of the 1950s.

Also on trend: A relaxed, Mediterranean ambience and the quiet simplicity of Scandinavian design.

Green design: Sustainable material use

The design process is becoming more and more sustainable – and that is just the beginning.

With modern climate screening tools, the CO2 footprint of new garden furniture is minimised in a targeted manner.

Materials like aluminium are reduced. Recycled plastics are used to produce chairs, tables or plant pots.

The implementation of regrowing raw materials like wood or bamboo from certified production contributes towards promoting responsible forest management.

The wide selection of environmentallyfriendly materials satisfies different design preferences and connects sustainability with aesthetic demand in an impressive way.

Design diversity instead of uniform green: More design possibilities for the garden

The garden is far more than merely green space – it offers unlimited possibilities to be creative.

Whether modular dining sets, elegant sofas on the terrace or space-saving stackable tables and chairs: Modern garden furniture is flexibly adapted to satisfy the different needs and occasions.

Multifunctional furniture and creative design concepts like natural plants or Blackbox Gardening transform the outdoor section into a versatile place of retreat for relaxing and spending time.

Comfy, timeless design, resource saving, design lightness and diversity – these trends are characterising the design of current and future outdoor areas.

Creating chaos! Changingtherulesofmerchandising

This time out Liam Kelly turns his attention to Chaos Theory! As always, with our retail gardening guru, there are lessons to be drawn that can have a direct impact on the bottom line! So, take it away Liam!

I’m not a mathematician, but something about Chaos Theory fascinates me.

I should point out that I don’t really understand that whole branch of scientific study but to my mind it attempts to demonstrate that, within any seemingly chaotic system, there are no real random events – or perhaps vice versa – and that much of what we see as irregularity has within it predictability, patterns and repetition that would perhaps be seen as unexpected, and how small changes within an event can cause an exponentially more significant e ect further down the timeline.

This is not a great definition of the principle I will be the first to admit and I would seriously suggest you confer with better minds than mine for a more accurate – if not clearer – version of the theory.

Connection

What is more important from a retail point of view, and specifically in the area of merchandising, is the connection between Chaos Theory and creativity.

Chaotic minds can certainly spawn new ideas, and from random thoughts can coalesce into artworks and writing that in itself is structured and regular to a point.

What starts o as a few stray dots on a canvas or random words scribbled in a notebook can become something organised, with a pattern and a recognisable form even though that wasn’t what the painter or writer intended at the start, as they had no idea where they would end up.

This process in itself opens the creator up to new possibilities and forces adaption to changes that occur along the journey to an endpoint that in itself is both unpredictable and inevitable.

Innovation

It also forces innovation and problem solving as small changes need to be factored in at an early point in order to have a greater meaning later in the project.

Phew! So, applying all of this to merchandising in a retail setting might seem a little crazy but there is a lot to be taken from the general concept of a seemingly random display of plants having a specific purpose, meaning and reason, even if that purpose and reason is to be sold and be planted in someone’s garden.

And it certainly starts with a first-placeplant with only a general sense of where the display will end, and what fractal-like patterns will be formed.

Back in the day, most garden centres and plant retailers arranged their plants by category depending on what type of

‘Small changes within an event can cause an exponentially more signi cant e ect further down the timeline.’

plant they were classed as, so climbers, conifers, perennials, etc. all had their own neat sections within the plant area and the plants were arranged in alphabetical order withing those sections – pigeonholed.

This was a time when gardening was more regimented in a way, and a time when most customers would come looking for specific plants so it was important that they could be found with ease.

Changed

This changed somewhat a few years ago when plants began to be merchandised by their end use, so for example shadeloving plants or groundcover plants were put together, but again in rows in an A-Z format, although certain categories that are in themselves an end use remained as they were such as climbers, hedging, fruit, etc.

But that is – or should – be changing again as the customer’s buying habits evolve.

Those who come into a garden centre with a list of plants are now the exception not the rule, so most of the new generation of gardeners visit plant retailers to be inspired and to purchase what they see, not what they know about or have seen elsewhere, with the exception of coming across something on

social media of course.

Therefore, there is a new need for those who layout and merchandise a plant area to be much more creative in how they show off the plants they wish to sell.

Combine that with a trend for the appropriately named ‘Chaos Gardening’ by many new gardeners, an off shoot of the wild gardening trend, where random plants are placed together in the hope they will both survive and more importantly look natural-ish and almost self-seeded or planted, and it shows that there is a need to

change our merchandising to match.

(The huge sales of those mixed flower seed boxes are both a symptom and driver of this type of gardening.)

Categorized

That’s not the case for all lines, as some will still be needed to be categorized by end use, but even within these displays we need to embrace a little chaos and step away from those neat rows to something a little more random looking but which in fact follows a pattern or structure of sorts.

This involves merchandising plants in a more mixed fashion, where perennials, grasses and shrubs are used together in most of the displays within the plant area in what looks like a random fashion but in fact has a purpose.

The main reason is of course to inspire the customer to purchase, and this is achieved by combining plants that look well together in a display, and not in just rows, but in blocks and dri s that show o the plants to their absolute best, and just like in the garden, with the blocks of bigger plants at the back and groups of smaller ones to the front.

And who’s to say we can’t take it a step further and combine seemingly random lines such as blueberries and rhubarb plants, which would have strictly been corralled with other fruit and edibles on one bench, within these displays?

There is no reason not to apart from habit, the customer certainly won’t object.

Combined

Similarly, rose plants are traditionally kept together but they can be combined – as the purchaser o en will – with other plants providing they look well together.

It might even be a case that specific sizes or exclusively branded versions of these plants are bought in to create these displays, leaving the ‘normal’ stock in its own category.

We can quickly see how what appears

to be a mixed and random collection of plants in a well merchandised display actually has purpose, meaning and even structure.

From what many old-school garden centre owners would perceive as chaos, we have created something to inspire and encourage.

There is indeed both purpose and method to our madness.

See what happens!

One of the much-mentioned examples of the Chaos theory is the idea of how the flapping of a butterfly’s wings in one country can create air currents that will eventually cause a hurricane somewhere else, and whether true or not, it would be good to release a few butterfly-like ideas into your plant merchandising and see what happens.

It’s an ill wind, they say – so embrace chaos!

Time to capitalize

Mark Bowman focuses the thermal imaging camera on a new answer to countering thermal bridging at vulnerable junctions, without compromising on load carrying capacity.

From PassivHaus to pasties, Ireland shows an appetite for Marmox Thermoblocks

The past couple of years has seen consultants and contractors across Northern Ireland and The Republic of Ireland wake up to the unrivalled capacity of Marmox Thermoblocks to deal with issue of thermal bridging at the floor/wall and other junctions across the building envelope, with the manufacturer having invested in fresh post-Brexit compliance testing and providing technical training within specifiers’ o ices and as a result, a major merchant chain is selling the unique product into ultra-low energy housing projects and even new outlets of some high street chains keeping the population fed.

Interest grows

As sales manager for Frederick Jones (Belfast) Limited’s CP division, David McChesney has been witnessing interest grow strongly and fully understands the product’s benefits.

He comments: ‘As energy e iciency standards have continued to rise across Ireland, tackling thermal bridging has become a critical challenge for architects

and builders alike.

‘Thermoblock addresses this issue head-on, o ering a proven solution at key junctions such as wall-to-floor interfaces.

‘Designed to significantly reduce heat loss and eliminate thermal bridging, this loadbearing, highly insulated block is a game changer for low-energy and passive house buildings.’

Trusted

In fact, Frederick Jones has been a trusted supplier to numerous high-performance residential and commercial projects across Ireland and notably, Thermoblocks have been used in the construction of new premises for the Starbucks and Greggs chains, as well as in PassivHaus developments both sides of the border. David continues: ‘Backed by dedicated technical support and a streamlined delivery service, we ensure that both performance and logistics are expertly managed – from specification to installation.’

Award

Marmox relaunched the Thermoblock range in Ireland following the award of a coveted ETA certificate covering all aspects of the product’s performance characteristics a er Brexit determined the BBA Agrément certification was no longer recognised. As a result, the manufacturer’s Technical Manager for the UK & Ireland, Mark Bowman, is regularly delivering 60-minute CPD presentations, with participants qualifying for points via RIAI* accreditation.

Attendees will learn how the new testing confirmed the thermal conductivity for Thermoblock is 0.047 W/m.k, while the vertical thermal resistance (R value) for the 65mm and 100mm deep units is 1.4 m2K/W and 2.1 m2K/W respectively.

Cuts heat loss

This stems from the product’s twin rows of modified concrete mini-columns within a casing of extruded polystyrene (XPS) that drastically cuts heat loss at the ground floor perimeter or under parapet walls.

Produced in widths of 100, 140 and 216mm, the 600mm long blocks feature stepped ends which are jointed with a special adhesive, while the top and bottom surface are designed to bond with conventional mortar. Also delivering a compressive strength in excess of 7.5 N/mm2, the bridging units are stronger than all but the top performing aircrete ‘thermalblocks’ on the market and are ideal for helping pass Domestic Energy Assessment Performance (DEAP) and nondomestic NEAP calculations under Ireland’s Part L regulations. Crucially, Thermoblock o ers an ideal answer to assist the industry attain its challenging ‘Nearly Net Zero’ goals.

Celebrating 50 years of Snickers Workwear: Innovation for the modern worker

Snickers Workwear, a name synonymous with resilience and ingenuity, commemorates half a century at the forefront of workwear innovation in 2025.

But for Snickers, this golden anniversary is not a pause for nostalgia – it’s a bold step into the future, building on five decades of turning real challenges faced by cra speople into pioneering solutions.

A legacy built on problem-solving

The journey began in 1975 with a simple yet profound revelation: the workwear available simply wasn’t good enough.

When frustration spurred Swedish electrician Matti Viio to invent the iconic holster pocket, he ushered in a new era for tradespeople everywhere.

Over the years, Snickers expanded upon this legacy of innovation – introducing the tool vest in 2000 and constantly evolving designs to give workers that all-important extra hand, ensuring tools stay close and hands stay free and safe .

Safety by design

Visibility and safety have always been at the core of Snickers’ designs.

From pioneering high-visibility trousers in 1997 to adapting to stringent new standards with the 2013 High-Vis Waterproof Jacket, Snickers continually pushes the boundaries, now envisioning a future where self-luminous workwear could transform low-light safety for professionals across industries.

Durability meets sustainability

Recognizing that durability isn’t just good for performance but for the planet as well, Snickers Workwear incorporates robust materials such as Cordura, Kevlar, and DuraTwill into their garments.

Innovations like the Kevlar-reinforced knee pockets from 2017 ensure that workwear can withstand the harshest environments while reducing waste from frequent replacements. Now, the company is exploring selfhealing fabrics that promise to further extend product lifespan.

Performance and protection for everybody

Snickers Workwear’s reputation for combining comfort with state-of-the-art protection is well-earned.

From the revolutionizing stretch trousers in 2015 to the advanced Capsulized™ Kneepads introduced in 2023, the brand remains obsessed with ensuring optimal protection that adapts to every individual’s body.

Looking ahead: The future of workwear

Innovation at Snickers Workwear doesn’t stop at the garment on your back.

Collaborations with the next generation of designers, such as those at Umeå Institute of Design, reveal a future where AI assistants support on-site e iciency and air quality sensors shield workers from invisible dangers.

Concepts like exoskeletons and adaptive lighting suggest a tomorrow where workwear amplifies human ability and safety in unimaginable ways

As Snickers Workwear celebrates its 50th anniversary, the brand is more focused than ever on empowering workers, confronting new challenges, and leading the charge into the next era of protective, innovative workwear – for today, and for generations to come.

The most effective goalsetting strategy you probably never use

Expert opinion by Jeff Haden @jeff_haden

When I worked on the shop floor, my supervisor asked if I wanted to spend time in production control developing a better way to improve workflow throughout the department.

I wanted to move into management someday, so I jumped on the opportunity.

That ask, according to Mark Cuban, is a perfect example of leadership.

Goals align

During a 2024 episode of The Draymond Green Show podcast, Mark Cuban talked with the famous basketball player about how great leaders understand that company goals should align, whenever possible, with employee goals.

As Cuban said: Leadership is having a vision. What’s my goal. Part two is getting to know the people who are working with me, and

what their goals are.

And then the real definition of leadership is making those two merge.

This makes sense. My supervisor’s goal? Improve our department’s productivity.

My goal? Show that I had the skills to be a supervisor and, eventually, run a plant. Our goals merged. One goal worked, on multiple levels.

The hidden benefits

But what if you don’t have employees? You should still take the same approach.

You should still choose to pursue goals that work on multiple levels for you, because we all lead ourselves.

To be sure, the most important person you will ever lead is

Final Say

yourself, because everything you do – every person you lead, or influence, or impact – flows from there. What’s more, because pursuing a goal that works on multiple levels makes it much more likely that you’ll stay the course and actually achieve that goal.

Exercise

Take exercise for example. Most of us want to be healthier. Even so, with everything else on your plate, ‘get in better shape’ doesn’t rise to the top unless you dig a little deeper:

• Exercise makes you a better leader. Studies show that chronic stress can cause leaders to become uncertain and unmotivated, and to focus on themselves rather than on their teams.

• Exercise makes you smarter. A study published in Journal of Comparative Physiology in 2014 shows that increased blood flow also improves brain plasticity and enhances the functional aspects of parts of the brain involved in cognition. As the researchers write, ‘More active or higher fit individuals are capable of allocating greater attentional resources toward the environment and are able to process information more quickly.’

• Exercise improves your mood. Researchers at the University of Vermont found that 20 minutes of moderate intensity aerobic training improved participants’ mood for up to 12 hours.

• Exercise makes you happier. A study published in International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health found that participants with moderate-to-high activity levels had significantly higher life satisfaction and happiness than those less active.

One goal, multiple benefits for you, and for the people around you – at work and at home.

Strategic goal setting

Or, say you’ve always wanted to learn a language. With all the other things on your plate, learning to speak Spanish doesn’t rise to the top unless you dig a little deeper.

Learning a language:

• Improves executive functions like attention control, problem-solving skills, and task-switching abilities.

• Improves working and long-term memory in unrelated tasks.

• Increases brain plasticity by activating di erent brain regions – auditory, visual, motor, and others – and strengthens connectivity between hemispheres.

• Improves empathy and cultural understanding

• And would make me seem like a lot less of a doofus when I need to communicate with some of my subcontractors at construction sites.

One goal, benefits on multiple levels. Try it. Think about a goal you’ve always wanted to accomplish. Then look past the obvious outcome.

Managing

yourself

For example, the benefit of building a bigger business is selfevident, but not particularly meaningful on an emotional level. Dig a little deeper, though, and more benefits emerge.

Building a bigger business helps ensure you can take care of your employees.

(When I walked around his 400,000-square-foot race shop with Joe Gibbs, I asked him what he thought about when he stepped back and looked at it all. ‘The first thing that comes to mind,’ he said, ‘is all the times I wondered if we would be able to make payroll the next Friday.’)

Building a bigger business creates opportunities for your employees to learn and grow – and to take care of their families. Greater financial stability means you can take better care of your customers and serve more customers.

Building a bigger business means you can take better care of your family.

Multiple

One goal, multiple benefits – for you, and for the people around you. Those are the kinds of goals you want to pursue.

And because they now have greater personal meaning, you will be more likely to achieve them.
