We look back on a busy year as seen through the pages of Hardware & Homestyle
News was coming thick and fast in our early summer issue, just after our last yearbook. We had the usual round-up of stories from the trade and the wider economy starting off with some inspiring stories such as the news that Chadwicks had announced a new partnership with Irish Olympic boxer Jennifer Lehane.
As part of this partnership, Jennifer, we read, would act as a brand ambassador for the builders’ merchants and promote the brand through a variety of exciting campaigns.
Jennifer (26) put her primary teaching job on hold in 2022 to focus full time on boxing.
She joined fellow Olympian and National Elite Champion Jack Marley as a Chadwicks brand ambassador.
Chadwicks are also the front-of-shirt sponsor for Shelbourne FC’s men’s and women’s teams, as well as the naming rights partner of Chadwicks Wexford Park.
Commenting on the partnership, Patrick Atkinson, Chief Executive Officer, Chadwicks
Group said:
‘We are delighted to welcome Jennifer Lehane to the team here at Chadwicks.
‘She’s a phenomenal talent and we are excited to work with her as she looks to build on her impressive career to date.
‘We’re looking forward to cheering Jennifer on at the World Championships this month (at time of writing) and can’t wait to partner with her on some exciting campaigns later on this year.’
Bord Bia Bloom was of course on our radar and featured in our news section and in a full report later in our issue.
Bloom 2025 was billed as a ‘celebration of nature, creativity, and sustainable living’.
It offered attendees another spectacular experience over five days in the Phoenix Park, Dublin.
Laura Douglas, Head of Bloom and Brand Partnerships at Bord Bia, said: ‘Bord
Bia Bloom is all about celebrating nature, gardening, and the fresh products our land provides.

‘Protecting our environment connects everything we do at the festival – from the amazing Show Gardens to the talks, workshops, and other activities designed to inspire and educate visitors.’
United Hardware, the buying and marketing group for builders’ merchants, DIY and home & garden retail stores hosted over 150 people and over 100 exhibitors at the United Hardware Supplier Trade Show 2025, at the National Show Centre, Swords, Co. Dublin.
We had reports in our news section and ran a feature on the event.
United Hardware DAC, which supplies and operates the Homevalue retail brand, was delighted to announce a new strategic partnership with DID Electrical, we further read.
Two of Ireland’s leading ‘Guaranteed Irish’, retail brands with a combined footprint of over 110 stores nationwide would now ‘collaborate to enhance customer access to home appliances from well-known brands,’ was the message.
This new agreement also saw the launch of the innovative ‘DID Essentials’ brand.
Chadwicks Group had announced five senior appointments across its business, strengthening its leadership team. The appointments included General Manager positions at Heiton Steel, Proline, and The Panelling Centre, a new Managing Director for Davies, and a Branch Manager for Morgans Timber.
As the Irish business continued to experience sustained growth, we read, Chadwicks Group made the appointments as ‘part of its full-service strategy to meet customer needs in an increasingly demanding market’.
Elsewhere in news we had stories from The Panelling Centre, the DIY Summit, we covered wellness topics and heard also how Combilift launched two groundbreaking solutions for timber handling at Ligna 2025.
On The Record featured Pipelife: Pipelife Ireland md Conor Manning, recently appointed following the retirement of Gerard Healy, talked about his background and plans for the business moving forward.
We also reviewed the latest AIB Ireland

Construction PMI®
‘Construction activity in Ireland continued to increase as the second quarter of the year got underway as companies responded to sustained new order growth,’ was the message.
In the homefront we had some more inspiring retail from around the world. This time it was Australia.
Founder and Creative Director of Mud Australia, Shelley Simpson, discovered her love for ceramics 31 years ago when she used her friend’s pottery wheel.

The experience ignited a spark that led to a passion for creating beautiful handmade ceramics and the seed of the much-loved Australian company was planted.
Showtime
We had a significant Showtime offering this time out featuring Autumn Fair, spoga+gafa and the UTD Hardware show.
The room outside with Liam Kelly featured further timely advice as he turned his attention to Chaos Theory!
As always, with our retail gardening guru, there were lessons to be drawn that could have a direct impact on the bottom line.
When it came to products we were ‘Celebrating 50 years of Snickers Workwear: Innovation for the modern worker’.
Snickers Workwear, a name synonymous with resilience and ingenuity, commemorates half a century at the forefront of workwear innovation in 2025, we noted.
‘But for Snickers, this golden anniversary is not a pause for nostalgia – it’s a bold step into the future, building on five decades of turning real challenges faced by craftspeople into pioneering solutions.’
Other household names were Dulux, Henkel, Marmox and Zinsser and we ran a special piece: ‘Introducing The Chapterstone Company Ltd.’
Jeff Haden rounded it all off on a positive

www.coolrainsawmills.ie

note as usual. With a piece on goal setting. The most important person you will ever lead is yourself, said Jeff, because everything you do – every person you lead, or influence, or impact – flows from there.
On into high summer next and we were looking at a Chadwicks podcast, we had further news from Pipelife and noted how a ‘Three-year deal sees Elavon become preferred payments partner to REI’s 2,000plus membership base.’
Meanwhile, Dustin dropped in to a new look Sallynoggin Chadwicks. The famous celebrity and builder joined in the celebrations as Chadwicks marked a new chapter for the trade and DIY community in Sallynoggin unveiling its newly refurbished local branch, we read.
Elsewhere in News we featured the Small Firms Association and news from the Irish Green Building Council (IGBC).
We heard about work being done with the Irish Wheelchair Association by a top builders provider and we checked in on some of the latest trends, facts and figures.
Here we heard that ‘business conditions in the Irish construction sector remained subdued as the first half of 2025 drew to a close.
‘Total activity decreased slightly again, despite growth in commercial activity.’
On The Record featured Neil McDonnell who joined ISME as Chief Executive in 2016.
Neil had previously served as an infantry officer in the Irish Defence Forces, as a staff officer in Defence Forces HQ, and in operational roles in Lebanon and Cyprus.

Among his previous roles in business, Neil managed petroleum distribution operations for 12 years in Ireland for ExxonMobil, Topaz and smaller domestic Neil McDonnell

customers.
Since joining ISME, Neil had been especially active on the issues of insurance costs for small business, the introduction of a perjury act to tackle white collar crime, and the need for a comprehensive reform of Irish indigenous industrial policy.
Neil featured some years ago in On The Record and took time out for a ‘post-covid catch-up’ with Hardware & Homestyle
In the Homefront we went to Argentina for a special profile.
With seven stores and 60 staff across Argentina, CUK is a store that has a simple, yet strong, mission:
To create a hassle-free and memorable shopping experience and to always offer a warm, personal touch.
Also in this issue, we saw the great work being done by Homevalue with Barretstown under the heading:
‘Homevalue announces €60,000 charity partnership with Barretstown for 2025.’
We ran a major feature on the year’s DIY Summit. ‘The 11th edition of the Global DIY-Summit reaffirmed its position as the premier international gathering for executives in the home improvement and garden retail industry,’ we noted.
A prominent heading here, was: ‘Navigate uncertainty with purpose’
Held in Lisbon, the ‘Queen of the Sea’, last year’s Summit brought together over 1,000 delegates from 55 countries, including more than 320 top-tier retail leaders, to explore the theme:
New World Order: Redefining DIY for a Global Future.
Staying with the summit, we ran a special feature on AI, by Iñaki Maillard:
‘The AI revolution in DIY: A transformation we didn’t see coming. Discover how AI is revolutionizing DIY and home improvement, making projects smarter, easier, and more efficient than ever before.’
We have reproduced this fantastic article in this issue.
Wellness was to the fore once again.
Over 2 in 5 (44%) of tradespeople say their mental health could be improved and 29% admit to prioritising their physical fitness over their mental health.
That was according to research from Chadwicks.
Richie Sadlier teamed up with Chadwicks to launch a mental health awareness campaign.
We checked in with spoga+gafa again of course.
‘From garden to outdoor experience: spoga+gafa 2025 shows what direction the market is moving in,’ it was noted.
We also observed its ‘high international presence and clear focus on the future.’
In The Room Outside we checked in, once again, with Liam Kelly.
As always, Liam, our gardening retail guru, shared his thoughts on the time of year and how to make the most of the challenges and opportunities.
Our products in this issue included names such as Dargans, Bostik, Dulux,
Firebird, Excellence, Marmox and Tor.
And we rounded it off once again with Expert opinion by Jeff Haden who told us:
Cognitive science says the 10-minute rule is a (literally) effortless way to learn faster, improve recall, and boost memory.
September / October saw us once again visit a range of areas in our News pages.
We looked at the area of skills for young people, the economic outlook and the perennial topic of crime.
Here, a recent ISME survey had shown how most SMEs avoided crime but repeat victims suffered severe impacts.
We looked too at the Finalists’ list in the Elavon Retail Excellence Ireland Awards which had been unveiled.
We checked in with Combilift, Ibec and the Small Business Awards.
Also, we announced: ‘Building industry ready to decarbonise but needs support, guidance and regulation.’
This was shown in a new Irish Green Building Council (IGBC) report:
‘The building industry stands ready to decarbonise, but needs support, clear guidance and ambitious regulation to meet its climate targets – that’s the message of a major new report, Building A Zero Carbon Ireland: Industry Insights & Actions, published by the Irish Green Building
Council this September as part of World Green Building Week.’
The AIB Ireland Construction PMI® report told us: ‘New orders decrease for first time in seven months.’
On The Record saw us revisit the topic of wellness. And we spoke with Richie Sadlier who had teamed up with Chadwicks to launch that mental health awareness campaign earlier.
The research of 100 tradespeople into their attitudes towards their mental health was carried out to launch the second year of ‘How’s the Head?’ – a campaign aimed to equip tradespeople with the tools to improve their mental health. ‘
Elsewhere, United Hardware were named among Deloitte’s Best Managed Companies 2025 – for the second year running!
‘United Hardware, the buying and marketing group for builders’ merchants, DIY and home & garden retail stores, has once again been named as one of Ireland’s Best Managed Companies at the 2025 Deloitte Best Managed Companies Awards,’ we reported.
On to The Room Outside next. ‘I’ve always had a love/hate relationship with this time of year’, wrote Liam Kelly.
‘It’s an odd period anyhow, as it falls between autumn and winter, and can be classed in either depending on who you ask and what criteria they use – be it official or unofficial.’
In this issue we visited the Netherland’s Balthazar Kookwinkel which has been sharing the joy of cooking and dining through great products, human connection and a unique personal touch.
Our article was headlined: Cooking and connection at Balthazar Kookwinkel.
This wonderful store was one of five retailers around the world named an IHA Global Innovation Awards (gia) Global Honoree for Retail Excellence at The Inspired Home Show in Chicago.
Continuing one of our recurring stories from the year we announced:
‘Homevalue hosted its first-ever Golf Classic – Supporting Barretstown on Thursday, 11 September, at the picturesque Glasson Lake House in County Westmeath, raising an incredible €40,164 in support of Barretstown’s therapeutic programmes for children and families affected by serious illness.’
The event brought together 27 teams of four for a day of competitive but lighthearted golf, with participants enjoying breakfast, a BBQ dinner, goodie bags, and entries into various competitions including Nearest the Pin and a charity raffle.
A highlight of the day was the ‘Beat the Pro’ challenge hosted by professional golfer Colm Moriarty, which added an exciting twist for players looking to test their skills.

And in The Final Say: A Legendary psychologist described the fishpond e ect 40 years ago. It’s still the secret to remarkable success, wrote Je Haden.
‘While it’s fun to be a big fish in a small pond, it can also keep you from becoming the fish you wish to become.
‘While objective, measurable performance is what really matters, it’s normal to compare yourself to other people.
‘The result is the big-fish-little-ponde ect (or frog-pond, depending on your aquatic preference): a psychological phenomenon where your perception of your ability, status, or achievement is influenced by the people around you.
Ferdia
In our November / December / January issue our News pages featured Ferdia Homevalue, Ardee, Co. Louth - named United in Excellence Store of The Year 2025.
The headline read: United Hardware celebrates excellence at 2025 ‘United in Excellence Awards’
United Hardware honoured outstanding achievement and innovation at its 6th annual ‘United in Excellence Awards’ ceremony, held at The Galmont Hotel, Galway, following the group’s flagship conference. We had a full report later in this issue too.
Guests
We heard how the event brought together over 250 guests and showcased the remarkable standards and dedication of United Hardware members nationwide.
Also, we read how Shelbourne fans voted on Tolka Park upgrades as part of Chadwicks’ renewed sponsorship of the club.
Chadwicks, leading builders’ merchants and proud sponsors of Shelbourne Football Club, had recently asked fans to vote for improvements they want to see in the club’s home ground, Tolka Park, for the 2026 season.
We also heard about a busy year for Smyths Homevalue Enniscorthy – now our new gia store!
The United Hardware Store Awards had brought together members, suppliers and partners for a flagship celebration of excellence across the Homevalue network.
Among the major awards presented, the overall national award for Best Paint Store was proudly presented to Smyth’s

Homevalue, celebrated for its exceptional customer support and best-in-class paint o ering.
‘This comes in a busy year for Smyths who recently opened Wexford’s Second DID Essentials Zone,’ we read.
The launch followed just weeks a er the first DID Essentials opening at Wallace’s Homevalue in Wellingtonbridge, marking a period of strong progress for County Wexford and further strengthening the partnership between Homevalue and DID Electrical.
The opening featured an o icial ribbon cutting attended by three generations of the Kavanagh family, reflecting the store’s long-standing heritage and deep community roots.
The family highlighted how the addition of DID Essentials enhanced their o ering while staying true to the values that have shaped the business for decades
The new zone features a curated selection of leading appliance and tech brands including Ninja, Shark, Kenwood, Whirlpool, Eufy, LG and Samsung.
Customer feedback has been extremely positive, with shoppers welcoming the convenience of purchasing quality home appliances alongside their regular DIY and hardware needs
But that’s not all. Smyths was now unveiled as our gia store for 2026 and would join us in Chicago!
Meanwhile, we had further news from Combili . Combili , once again, has been recognised as one of Ireland’s Best Managed Companies by Deloitte, marking their 13th consecutive year receiving this prestigious accolade.
We also checked in with IBEC and Chadwicks and the Panelling Centre. And of course, the AIB Ireland Construction PMI®
Here we read: ‘New orders return to growth at end of 2025’.
‘While construction activity in Ireland continued to decrease in December, other indicators from the latest AIB Ireland Construction PMI® painted a more upbeat picture of the sector at the end of 2025.’
In On The Record attention turned to the smallest room. Bathrooms have become one of the most expressive and personalised spaces in the home, we read.
‘From luxurious upgrades like underfloor heating and rainfall showers to solving everyday frustrations such as poor layout and limited storage, Irish homeowners are investing in bathrooms that strike the perfect balance between comfort and style.’
So said Zoe McGrath, Category Manager at Chadwicks.
We also had two pages on United Hardware as it celebrated excellence at its 2025 United in Excellence Awards.
Ferdia Homevalue, Ardee, Co. Louth was named United in Excellence Store of The Year 2025.
United Hardware honoured outstanding achievement and innovation at its 6th

annual ‘United in Excellence Awards’ ceremony, held at The Galmont Hotel, Galway, following the group’s flagship conference, we read.
The event brought together over 250 guests from across the United Hardware network, including store owners, managers, partners and sponsors.
In The Homefront our headline read: ‘Heart and history take Album de Famille to new heights.’
We read: When Sylvie Scott opened a tiny homewares boutique 32 years ago, she had no idea that Album de Famille would evolve into one of France’s most admired retail experiences and be named one of the best home goods retailers in the world.
Album de Famille was one of five retailers around the world named as an IHA Global Innovation Awards (gia) Global Honoree for Retail Excellence at The Inspired Home Show in Chicago.
In addition, The Inspired Home Show® and the International Housewares Association (IHA), the global sponsors and organisers of the IHA Global Innovation Awards (gia) program had announced the Global Honorees for the gia Top Window Awards and we had details.
The announcement took place during the 2025 Visual Merchandising & Display Trends: Big Themes Driving Innovation presentation by gia expert juror Denise Foley.
The latest Global Honorees were:
Small Company Category: Potters Cookshop, United Kingdom
Large Company Category: Krawany, Austria
‘For more than 25 years, IHA is very proud to have honoured the very best in home + housewares retailing through the gia Awards, we noted.’
‘The most recent gia Top Window Awards competition had entries from 15 countries, and it is incredibly encouraging to see the creativity and passion that retailers are placing into their window displays,’ said Derek Miller, IHA president & CEO. See later in this issue for more.
Also, we reported how a Home and living survey had revealed consumer opportunities and pain points.
While marketers have leaned heavily into cross-generational consumer research, there’s still merit in the housewares industry examining distinct generational traits when it comes to daily living and wellness goals, said Tom Mirabile, principal and founder of Springboard Futures.
Mirabile unveiled the results of the 2025 Home and Living Survey, a research collaboration between IHA and Springboard.
In The Room Outside we began:
‘Time to look at trends for the coming season in garden retail sales. Our columnist Liam Kelly takes a somewhat cautious look ahead at what might be worth bearing in mind to keep those tills ringing in 2026!’
Liam’s article was headlined: En vogue? –some topical gardening s for 2026
‘I’ve never been one to get too tied up in so-called trend predictions where retail is concerned’, said our guru.
‘That’s mostly because the vagaries of weather from year to year, a previous year’s
one-off fashion, or whatever hot topic is fleetingly on social media tends to have a misleading effect on sales of certain lines to the point where it can be quite difficult to get the same reaction and sales the following year.
‘This is especially true in recent years where topics come thick and fast, and buzz words drift around before quickly disappearing back where they came from soon just causing ripples rather than waves in retail.’
Retail Excellence Ireland, the largest representative body for the retail industry in Ireland, announced the winners of each of the 22 categories at the Elavon Retail Excellence Ireland Awards 2025.
Over 500 executives from the retail industry attended the ceremony at the Lyrath Estate Hotel in Kilkenny.
Rounding it all off we had our expert opinion by Jeff Haden who wrote:
‘If you want to be a better boss, science says stop serving feedback sandwiches.’
‘Especially if your goal in giving feedback is to actually help employees improve their performance.
‘I was taught to use a so-called “feedback sandwich” to give constructive feedback: lead with a positive, share the negative, finish with a positive.
‘The idea was…well, I don’t know what the idea was. I guess to soften the “room for improvement” blow?
‘All I know is that the feedback sandwich rarely worked.
‘Especially on me.’
How AI is revolutionizing DIY and home improvement, making projects smarter, easier, and more efficient than ever before. by Iñaki Maillard
In a special AI-related feature Iñaki Maillard told readers that for decades, the world of home improvement and DIY ‘has been ruled by two things: expertise and experience’.
Advice
He continued: You learned from your father how to fix a leaky pipe, or you relied on the seasoned advice of a hardware store employee who had seen it all.
But now, something entirely different is reshaping this landscape.
Artificial intelligence is not knocking at the door of DIY – it has already let itself in, rearranged the furniture, and is now redesigning the entire house.
The question isn’t whether AI will change DIY; it’s how deep the transformation will go.
For years, the go-to method for learning DIY was a frantic Google search or a how-to video.
You’d watch a ten-minute tutorial just to learn a single trick, or you’d skim through endless forum discussions to find a solution to a problem that only half resembled yours.
AI is obliterating this inefficiency.
Imagine this: Instead of digging through pages of content, you describe your exact issue to an AI assistant.
Within seconds, it processes your problem, accounts for your specific tools and materials, and offers a custom, step-by-step guide tailored precisely to your situation.
Not just a generic ‘how to install a shelf’ – but a guide that considers your wall type,

your drill model, and even your skill level.
This is not the future. This is happening now.
One of the biggest obstacles in DIY has always been the learning curve.
Every new skill takes time, mistakes, and often frustration.
But what if you had an AI mentor that could analyze your technique in real time?
Smartphone cameras can now scan your work and tell you if you’re holding the drill at the wrong angle.
Augmented reality (AR) overlays can show you exactly where to cut, nail, or paint.
AI-powered tools can even predict potential issues before they happen, preventing that moment of horror when you realize you’ve drilled into a pipe.
It’s like having a master craftsman watching over your shoulder – without the intimidation.
We used to think of home improvement as a battle between man and material.
The challenge was figuring things out, often through trial and error.
But AI is shifting DIY from a process of uncertainty to one of guided precision.
Think of smart home systems that tell you when a screw is loose before it even falls out. Imagine AI-driven 3D printing that can produce custom spare parts at home, elim-
inating the need for last-minute hardware store runs.
Picture AI-powered design assistants that help you visualize your room transformation in real time, swapping colours and furniture placements before you even pick up a brush.
We’re no longer ‘doing it ourselves’ – we’re doing it with AI.
The critics argue that AI will take the soul out of DIY, that without the trial, there is no triumph.
If AI makes everything easy, will DIY still feel rewarding? The answer depends on how we use it.
AI can’t replace the sense of pride in building something with your own hands. What it can do is remove the unnecessary frustrations – the missing screws, the crooked shelves, the guesswork.
It allows us to focus on the creative, the personal, and the satisfying parts of home improvement.
Ultimately, AI isn’t here to take over DIY.
It’s here to make it better, to transform it from a task of frustration to one of innovation, to ensure that when you step back and admire your work, you do so not just with relief but with pride.
The DIY revolution is no longer just about doing it yourself. It’s about doing it smarter. And AI is handing us the tools.

Chadwicks Group, distributor of building materials to the broader construction industry, announced five senior appointments across its business, strengthening its leadership team, we reported.
The appointments included General Manager positions at Heiton Steel, Proline, and The Panelling Centre, a new Managing Director for Davies, and a Branch Manager for Morgans Timber.

During his time at Sliderobes, David led
key initiatives such as retail renovations, the implementation of a new CRM system, and the development of a paperless manufacturing facility.
His expertise in operations and product innovation will be instrumental in expanding Morgans Timber’s range and driving sales growth.
Commenting on the appointments, Patrick Atkinson, CEO of Chadwicks Group & Ireland Distribution, said:
‘I am delighted to welcome Peter, Brian, Lorraine, David, and Gary into their new roles. Each of them brings extensive expertise and leadership experience, and I have no doubt they will make a significant impact.
‘With Ireland’s construction market showing resilience and housing supply a key priority for the incoming government, these appointments will further strengthen Chadwicks’ ability to support customers in a dynamic market.
‘At Chadwicks, we are committed to developing our internal talent while also attracting industry-leading professionals.
‘These appointments reflect our strategy of ensuring we have the right people in place to meet our customers’ needs and drive future growth. I look forward to working with them and seeing their contributions strengthen our business.’
Creating outstanding customer value and building relationships with the right retailers would be key elements for housewares suppliers to succeed in the hyper-competitive retail marketplace, said retail veteran Jeff Evans in a keynote session at The Inspired Home Show.
To succeed, Evans said that suppliers should educate their team about value, use a customer lens in every decision, believe in the power of an item and continually raise the bar to exceed customer expectations.
Evans, who served as president and chief merchandising officer of At Home and before that as executive vice president of entertainment, toys and seasonal for Walmart U.S., has deep experience in e-commerce, product development, sourcing, building brands and identifying new business opportunities.
Examine value proposition
Evans outlined four areas to examine when it comes to creating value with consumers: product quality, features and benefits, brand and price.
When it comes to quality, he suggested examining not just the product itself, but how it is packaged, both in-store and online.
For online content, he said photos, product descriptions and reviews matter.
‘People read reviews,’ Evans said.
‘Just one online review can increase conversion by 40 percent.’
Use a customer lens in every decision
Customer reviews are also important for self-improvement. Evans said that suppliers should always be evaluating what customers are saying about their products, in addition to loyalty data.
‘If your items are receiving below four stars, they are in danger of going away,’ said Evans.
‘Go back and look at why, and fix it.’
Evans said he recognized that suppliers get emotionally attached to their products.
But he advised taking a step back and evaluating them as a customer. When comparing to similar products, he suggested asking: Is my item really better?
‘Answer that question and then deter-

mine where you want to play,’ especially as it pertains to price.
Believe in the power of an item
An entry point with a big retailer can be a single, key item.
It may not be profitable to start, but it could open the door to something much bigger in the future.
‘Woo retailers with something they don’t have,’ Evans said.
Suppliers can stand out by thinking creatively about things like price point and extra special details in a growing category, he said.
He also said to look at the overall potential of an item, not just the margin, using the example of a 50 cent item that he went on to sell 100 million units of.
Exceed customer expectations every year
When you throw a party every year, you have to keep evolving to make it exciting.
The same goes for great products.
‘There’s always something you can be doing to improve your product,’ Evans said.
Whether it’s updating quality, driving down price, improving the brand or features and benefits to keep it fresh, always be improving.
‘Exceed customer expectations, and keep
moving. If you aren’t doing it, your competition is,’ Evans explained.
Find ways to partner and build trust
In addition to building customer value, Evans discussed how to partner with big retailers, even when it seems impossible.
He cautioned suppliers to be aware of retailer guidelines; some can be very strict. Many cannot accept gifts, or even meals or beverages at meetings.
He also said to take time to build trust with a retailer. ‘People bet on people; they don’t bet on companies. It’s basic, but true,’ Evans added.
For suppliers just starting out, he said marketplaces are great incubators for new products to show proof of concept and growth potential.
A first step with a retailer could be as a featured product or as part of a retailer’s new supplier program.
Evans said once you get in, suppliers typically only have one chance to make a first impression.
‘Make sure you’re buttoned up and everything’s in place, because they’re going to expect a lot of things from you that you need to make sure you are in the right place to execute on,’ Evans said.

Je Haden speaks this time out, of resilience, and more besides! Possessing – or more important, nding – the ability to push through adversity and failure and stick to their longterm passions and goals is o en what allows ‘ordinary’ people to accomplish extraordinary things, he writes.

Plus: two ways to be more resilient, starting today
No plan is ever foolproof. No road is ever straight. Nothing worthwhile is ever easy.
That’s why success requires the ability to deal e ectively with roadblocks, setbacks, and failure.
That’s why Steve Jobs felt perseverance was a crucial component in entrepreneurial success.
According to Jobs:
I’m convinced that about half of what separates successful entrepreneurs from the non-successful ones is pure perseverance. It is so hard. You pour so much of your life into this thing. There are such rough moments … that most people give up. I don’t blame them. It’s really tough.
Push through
Possessing – or more important, finding –the ability to push through adversity and failure and stick to their long-term passions and goals is o en what allows ‘ordinary’ people to accomplish extraordinary things.
The person who wins is o en the person who refuses to give up, especially on themselves.
And is also o en the person who lives a longer, more meaningful life.
According to a study published in BMJ Mental Health, people with high levels of mental resilience (calmness, determination and perseverance, self-reliance, and the
belief that some experiences have to be faced alone) reduced their risk of death from all causes by 53 percent.
As the researchers write:
Various factors, including but not limited to meaning in life, positive emotions, self-rated health and satisfaction with social support, have been identified as potential influences on psychological resilience.
Triggering these positive emotions may enhance the protective e ects of psychological resilience and mitigate the negative impact of accumulated adversity on mental health in adults.
Granted, mental resilience may sound a little hard to define. Think of it like an underlying premise of Stoicism:
While you can’t control everything that happens to you, you can control how you respond.
In this case, ‘maintaining a positive self-perception of aging has a considerable e ect on functional health, and optimism independently protects against all-cause mortality’.
That aligns nicely with a Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences study that found people with ‘high optimism’ were almost twice as likely to live to be at least 85 years old, even a er taking into account factors like health and socioeconomic status.
There is one catch, though. If you’re in poor health or have an unhealthy lifestyle, the link between mental resilience and longevity is more tenuous.
Ultimately, individual longevity comes down to a number of factors, chief among them diet, exercise, and sleep habits.
(To go a little deeper, check out a leading physician’s Rule of Six Plus Two.)
Makes sense. Mind over matter only goes so far. But it does make a di erence. As the BMJ Mental Health researchers write:
This nationally representative study demonstrates an independent association between higher levels of psychological resilience and reduced all-cause mortality.
The findings underscore the potential e ectiveness of interventions aimed at promoting psychological resilience in order to mitigate mortality risks.
So how can you become more resilient? In a review of over 50 studies published in Clinical Psychology Review, researchers sought to understand the di erent ways people adjusted over time to traumatic events and major life stressors.
Here are the four:
• Resilience: maintaining healthy functioning despite a stressful event
• Recovery: experiencing initial distress, then recovering over time
• Chronic stress: experiencing, and continuing to experience, distress over time
• Delayed onset: experiencing distress at some point after a stressful event
• Resilience and recovery sound great. Chronic stress and delayed onset, less so, but here’s the thing:
• Delayed onset was relatively rare, only occurring 9 percent of the time
• Chronic stress was also relatively rare, occurring in only 11 percent of cases
• Recovery was somewhat more common, occurring in 21 percent of cases
• Resilience? Despite a traumatic event or stressor, 66 percent of the time people maintained healthy functioning.
As Adam Grant says: ‘The most common response to adversity is not chronic stress. It’s resilience’.
Responding resiliently depends partly on how you frame a stressful event.
A study published in the Journal of Experimental Psychology found that when people viewed their stress response – their body’s natural response to stress, like increased heart and respiration rate – as helpful, their blood pressure didn’t rise. They still felt stressed, but in a good way: They saw their stress response as their body’s way of rising to the challenge.
Responding resiliently can also depend on how (and whether) you reframe a stressful event.
A study published in the Journal of Pain found that some people use what the researchers call adaptive coping strategies, seeing stress or trauma not as something happening to them, but as something they chose.
(Start a small business, and yes, you did choose to undergo a certain amount of pain.)
Others fall prey to maladaptive coping strategies, like feeling scared by physical or emotional discomfort, or seeing a certain level of stress as a clear signal to stop.
And sometimes people do both, with disastrous consequences.
In the Journal of Pain study, a single occurrence of a maladaptive coping strategy tripled the chances a participant would quit.
(Anyone who’s one weak moment

triggered an avalanche of doubt and negativity can surely relate.)
Bottom line? Seeing stress or trauma as inevitable can help you stay the course. Reframing stress or trauma as something you chose can also help you stay the course.
Best of all, the way you perceive and respond to stress or trauma may feel innate, but it can also be learned.
The key is to take a mental step back so you can make your emotions work for you, not against you.
Framing stress as something you chose helps create a sense of agency and control. So does reframing stress as a chance to work through a difficult problem, and learn and grow from the experience.
Sound like hocus-pocus? Science says it’s not.
A study published in the Journal of Neuroscience found that your brain actually thrives when you need to – or more to the point, choose to – work hard to overcome a challenge.
And you’ll also be happier, in spite of stress or trauma.
A study published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology found that autonomy, defined as ‘the feeling that your life, its activities and habits, are self-chosen and self-endorsed’ is the biggest contributor to happiness.
As the researchers write:
Having a strong sense of controlling one’s life is a more dependable predictor of positive feelings of well-being than any of the objective conditions of life we have considered.
The next time you plan to do something difficult, take a moment to frame the situation.
Remember that it will be hard, that it will
be challenging, that you might fail … but that you chose to make the effort.
And the next time something happens that makes you feel anxious or stressed, take a step back and reframe the situation.
See stress as a signal you have the opportunity to rise to a challenge, to show what you’re really made of … and if nothing else, to learn something, especially about yourself, you otherwise might never have discovered.
Granted, you’ll never be able to totally control your emotions. But you can better control how you manage your emotions. Which is all that really matters.
Instead of trying to develop a cutting-edge product, consider finding ways to help people be more mentally resilient.
Maybe you’ll find ways to help people use exercise – one study found that every minute of exercise can add five minutes to your life –as a tool to also increase mental resilience.
Maybe you’ll find ways to help people use cold plunges – which apparently provide a number of benefits, although research showing ice baths increase lifespan is scant – to improve how they respond to stress and adversity.
More likely, you’ll come up with another (better) idea.
And in the meantime, if you find ways to improve your own mental resilience and be more optimistic, science says you’re likely to live a longer, healthier, and happier life.
Can’t beat that.

Expert opinion by Jeff Haden @JEFF_ HADEN
Over 2 in 5 (44%) tradespeople said their mental health could be improved and 29% admitted to prioritising their physical fitness over their mental health.
We revealed how research of 100 tradespeople into their attitudes towards their mental health had been carried out to launch the second year of ‘How’s the Head?’, a Chadwicks campaign aimed to equip tradespeople with the tools to improve their mental health.
Chadwicks partnered with broadcaster and psychotherapist Richie Sadlier, who was sharing tips on how to boost mental fitness on his Instagram profile, arming tradespeople with simple steps on how to prioritise mental fitness while leading busy lives.
We first asked them to tell us about the fundraising elements of the campaign with Aware:
As part of the campaign and for the second year running, Chadwicks donated €1 from every sale of PPE (personal protective equipment), which includes high vis jackets, hard hats and safety boots in all branches nationwide, to Irish mental health charity, Aware.
Aware provides essential support to individuals affected by mental health conditions throughout Ireland.
Mental health management is a vital part of our health – we asked: ‘can you tell us some of the details that have come to light in the recent research?’
According to the survey, of those that struggle with their mental health, 32% say they don’t talk to anyone about it while 36% say they confide in their partner.
Low moods (70%) and feeling stressed or anxious (64%) are the main symptoms experienced but despite this, only 2% of those who struggle with their mental health say they would speak to a professional.
So, the research shone a light on peoples’ recognition of the need to do more for mental wellbeing.
Over a third (36%) say they are actively trying to take steps to improve their mental fitness

with spending more time with loved ones (55%) and getting a good night’s sleep (31%) some of the key steps they are taking.
Chadwicks explored tradespeople’s work habits as part of the study, and the research revealed some interesting facts:
• Not taking regular breaks (37%) and working too many hours (31%) are some of the habits they have developed that can have a negative impact on their mental health.
• Over half (58%) admit to losing sleep over work in the past year.
Recognising the importance of mental health to colleagues’ well-being, Chadwicks, in conjunction with VHI, runs an ongoing mental health awareness programme, designed to help colleagues manage their mental health better.
At least one colleague at every Chadwicks location will complete the programme as part of the company’s on-going commitment to colleague well-being, and new hires to Chadwicks also go through well-being awareness training as part of their induction process.
To officially launch the campaign, Richie Sadlier visited a specially commissioned installation at Chadwicks Sandyford, which shone a further spotlight on the campaign findings.
What was his message about the campaign?
Richie Sadlier said: ‘I am delighted to once again partner with Chadwicks to help raise awareness for this campaign and encourage tradespeople to talk more openly about their mental health.
‘It was interesting to see from the findings that many tradespeople prioritise their physical fitness over their mental health, but as anyone working in health and wellbeing will tell you, your mental wellbeing is a crucially important area.
‘And just like your physical fitness, your mental fitness can be built up and maintained if you follow the right suggestions. I got involved in this campaign again to help people realise what they are.’
He also referred to lessons from his football career.
‘One of the biggest lessons my football career taught me was that if I was mentally in a good place, I played better and enjoyed things more. I’ve since learned that it’s the very same for me off the pitch, too.
‘I’ve been given so many tips over the
‘It’s encouraging to see tradespeople becoming more aware of their mental health’
Patrick Atkinson, CEO of Chadwicks added: ‘It’s encouraging to see tradespeople becoming more aware of their mental health and taking steps to stay mentally fit, but the research makes it clear—this conversation needs to stay front and centre.
‘At Chadwicks, we recognise the unique pressures tradespeople can face and know it’s our responsibility to use our platform to bring more attention to this, driving meaningful change.
‘Through “How’s the Head”, we are committed to shining a spotlight on how mental health impacts tradespeople, breaking down stigma, and encouraging more people in the trades to open up.
‘Equally, we understand that supporting mental health starts from within and that’s why, in conjunction with VHI, we run an ongoing mental health awareness programme for our colleagues, reinforcing our commitment to fostering a culture where mental health and colleague wellbeing are a top priority.’

Grateful
Dr Susan Brannick, Clinical Director at Aware, concluded: ‘We are very grateful to be the charity partner for Chadwicks’ “How’s the Head” campaign again this year.
‘Initiatives like this are so important, not only to spark conversations and break down stigma but to ensure that those in the trades have access to the support they need.
‘While self-awareness and reaching out for help are vital steps, it’s equally crucial that well-funded, accessible services are in place for those who do.’
• 44% of tradespeople believe their mental health could be improved
• Over 1 in 4 (29%) prioritise their physical fitness over their mental fitness
• Of those who struggle with their mental health, 32% say they don’t talk to anyone about it
• Low mood (70%) and anxiety or stress (64%) are the most common symptoms
• More than half (58%) had lost sleep over work in the last year
years from coaches, teammates and therapists about how to keep myself mentally fit and well, and as part of this campaign, I’m going to share some on my Instagram over the next week.
‘Keep an eye on for those, and in the meantime, I’d really encourage tradespeople to talk more with each other, check in, and open up to build a healthier, stronger community.’
Data from Chadwicks’ research examined views on careers in construction late last year – as tradespeople and social media personalities Eoin Reardon and Shauna Doyle partnered with the organisation to encourage young adults to learn more about a trades career
Seven in ten (70%) of 16-24-yearolds would like to learn a trade skill outside of their regular school hours it emerged.
Yet, nearly half (47%) had never had the opportunity to do so in school, according to the research from Chadwicks.
The study, which was carried out to examine perceptions of careers in the trades, surveyed
200 people aged 16-24, 250 parents and 100 tradespeople.
While it emerged that schools were improving at promoting vocational pathways, over a third (38%) of young adults said the benefits of apprenticeships were still not promoted as strongly as university or college courses.
One in five (22%) felt that they had not received enough information to make informed career decisions when leaving school.
Chadwicks partnered with Eoin Reardon and Shauna Doyle to inspire a new generation to consider a career in construction and we followed up with a feature which explored this further!

Businesses in our sector again took part in the National Workplace Wellbeing Day.
With up to 1,000 companies participating annually, the day provides a unique opportunity for businesses across Ireland to celebrate with a range of health and wellbeing activities in the workplace.
It also offers a moment to rebalance and refocus on the supports that will benefit employees' social, mental, and physical wellbeing.
This focus is more important than ever: recent research published by Ibec showed 69% of Irish workers say their attitude to workplace wellness has become more important in the past 2–3 years, while 28% have noticed increased investment and focus by their employer.
As part of last year’s activity, Ibec launched the ‘Top 100 Companies Leading in Wellbeing’ index in association with the Business & Finance media group.
The index recognised the top businesses of all sizes ‘who are leading the way when it comes to employee wellbeing’.
Each of the companies selected had improved their performance in supporting employee mental health and wellbeing and their commitment to fostering a positive and supportive workplace culture.
Ibec CEO Danny McCoy said: ‘I would like to offer congratulations to the companies included in the top 100 index.
‘These are companies that have consistently demonstrated their strategic approach to and understanding of wellbeing in the workplace.’
This time out the CCPC writes on the topic of scams. Whether online or otherwise this is a topic that will be familiar to readers both in business and private life!
A scam is a dishonest scheme or plan designed to con you out of your money.
Scammers increasingly use technology to catch people off guard, attempting to access bank accounts, card details, PINs and other sensitive information.
Online scams are becoming increasingly sophisticated with technology like AI making it harder to spot what’s genuine and what’s not.
Recently, there’s been an increase in the number of ads on social media posing as Irish shops selling online.
The ads could appear as ‘sponsored’ posts on your social media feed, which means that they’ve been paid for. This can make the shop seem more genuine.
There are red flags to watch out for that could mean an ad you’re looking at is a
scam:
• The ad is offering huge discounts (‘up to 80% off’)
• The name of the shop suggests it’s Irish owned and based, but you might not have heard of it before.
• The ad promotes a sad back story such as a family business closing down after many years.
• The ad promotes urgent action (‘sale ends today!’)
• The website/social media account was set up recently
• Reviews on the site are all five star
On social media. Never click on an ad on social media. If you’re unsure if an ad you spot on social media is legitimate, always check the business’s profile to see if it looks like a well-established business.
The ‘About’ information on their profile should tell you when the page was set up and where it’s based.
Look to see how many followers the account has, and if other details are provided such as a website, phone number or address.
On a website. You might see that a website has a .ie address and assume that that means it was set up in Ireland, but that’s not always the case.
Registration of a .ie address normally requires proof of an Irish connection, but scammers can still spoof Irish identity or mislead consumers.
Under consumer law, a business operating in the EU must provide contact details, so check for a physical address, phone number and email.
You can check Google Maps to see if the business is where it says it is.

Look up independent review sites to see what others are saying about the business such as Trustpilot.
When you buy online from companies based in the EU, you are protected by strong consumer protection laws.
These laws also apply to businesses that are based outside the EU if they’re actively advertising their products to EU consumers, but it can take longer and be more complicated to resolve issues.
There are many ways scammers will target people but no matter how, remember the following golden rules: Stop. Do not give out your personal information or details if you’re unsure who you’re talking to.
Scammers will pretend to be from businesses or companies you know and trust.
Whenever you see a message calling for immediate action, that is your sign to pause. Think. Ask yourself, could this contact be fake? Has your bank or energy provider contacted you like this before?
If something sounds too good to be true it usually is.
Don’t click on online links or attachments, particularly if you don’t know the sender. Trust your instinct – if you feel uneasy about something, check first.

‘The Meath woman is the reigning Irish National Elite Champion at 54kg, having won her first national title in 2021.
‘Before making the switch to boxing while studying in DCU, Jennifer was a Taekwondo star who won two European senior titles as well as medals at World Junior and Senior Championships.
‘Jennifer joined fellow Olympian and National Elite Champion, Jack Marley, as a Chadwicks brand ambassador.

Homevalue hosted its first-ever Golf Classic – Supporting Barretstown on Thursday, 11 September, at the picturesque Glasson Lake House in County Westmeath, raising an incredible €40,164 in support of Barretstown’s therapeutic programmes for children and families a ected by serious illness.
The event brought together 27 teams of four for a day of competitive but light-hearted golf, with participants enjoying breakfast, a BBQ dinner, goodie bags, and entries into various competitions including Nearest the Pin and a charity ra le.
A highlight of the day was the ‘Beat the Pro’ challenge hosted by professional golfer Colm Moriarty, which added an exciting twist for players looking to test their skills.
The success of the event was made possible thanks to the generous support of Homevalue’s supplier partners, whose contributions helped enhance the experience for attendees and maximise the fundraising e orts for Barretstown.
The competition was fierce, with prizes awarded to the top-performing teams on the day:
• 1st Prize: United Hardware
• 2nd Prize: Murray Timber
• 3rd Prize: Ferdia Homevalue

wienerberger UK & Ireland ‘proudly announced’ the acquisition of MFP Sales Ltd., a producer of quality piping solutions for construction markets in Ireland and the UK.
We reported last summer: ‘With production facilities in Dublin and distribution in Belfast, MFP has built a reputable presence in the construction industry, public utilities, and local authorities.
‘Pipelife Ireland, wienerberger’s subsidiary, will integrate MFP’s operations, enhancing synergies in piping and drainage solutions. Building on the acquisition of Cork Plastics in 2021, which immediately enhanced its product portfolio to include rainwater, roofline and drainage products, this acquisition supports wienerberger’s commitment to the Irish market, underpinned by a €35 million investment in the region.
‘This acquisition supports wienerberger’s strategy to meet customer needs with a full range of building envelope products and services.’
‘It marks a key step in expanding their product offerings in the region across wall, roof, heating, and water management categories, complemented by technical services and customer support.

‘Our focus is on smooth integration to ensure we capture full benefits while maintaining service and quality.
‘As we integrate MFP, expand our portfolio, and lead in sustainability and innovation, I’m confident in Pipelife’s bright future as part of the wider wienerberger family.’
In recent years, wienerberger has expanded its portfolio beyond its brick and roof tile offering by acquiring Building Product Design in 2019 for ventilation and insulation systems, FloPlast and Cork Plastics in 2021 for roofline, rainwater, and drainage solutions, and Maincor, an underfloor heating specialist, in 2024.

Bord Bia Bloom o ered attendees another spectacular experience over five days in the Phoenix Park, Dublin.
Laura Douglas, Head of Bloom and Brand Partnerships at Bord Bia, said: ‘Bord Bia Bloom is all about celebrating nature, gardening, and the fresh products our land provides.
‘Protecting our environment connects everything we do at the festival – from the amazing Show Gardens to the talks, workshops, and other activities designed to inspire and educate visitors.’
Speaking in advance of the event Laura Douglas said: ‘We’re thrilled to see this year’s gardens take shape, o ering practical ideas for people’s own gardens, raising awareness about important issues, and sparking creativity. There’s truly something for everyone!’
A number of gardens were intended to provide safe, nurturing, and engaging spaces for children such as those by Tusla Fostering and Make-A-Wish Ireland in association with The Smurfit Westrock Foundation.
Others were demonstrating innovative design solutions with ideas for downsizing, balcony gardening, and incorporating naturalistic planting from Citroën Ireland, Alan Rudden Collection, Bord Bia, Abbeyleix House and Farm and Caragh Nurseries.
Environmental awareness is also a keen focus with gardens from the European Commission and Repak highlighting sustainability, circular economy principles, and waste management.
Others were celebrating Ireland’s diverse food landscape, such as those by Kerrygold, GIY Ireland, Bord Bia and the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine.

Focus
Gardens sponsored by the Marie Keating Foundation and Decision Support Service focused on promoting awareness of proactive health planning and prevention while joyful and creative gardens engaged and inspired visitors including the ‘How to Train your Dragon’ garden from Universal Ireland, and a garden made entirely of Lego bricks!
In addition to the Show Gardens, Bloom once again welcomed 11 pop-up Postcard Gardens, supported by Tirlán CountryLife, which are built in one day by community groups and schools across Ireland.
These showcase the importance of gardening sustainably and the soothing power of nature.
Seventeen plant nurseries and floral artists would exhibit in the Nursery Village, in association with Elite Garden Products, where visitors could meet growers and representatives, while purchasing quality, specialist plants.

We also looked forward to spoga+gafa in our late summer issue. The show was getting ready to present the latest garden lifestyle innovations! ‘This year the focus is on the theme “Design Gardens”,’ we noted, in a special trends piece designed to preview the event.
The outdoor area is becoming the second living room – a trend that is shaping modern garden collections.
Whether on the terrace or on the balcony outdoor furniture is convincing with inviting design, rounded shapes, so cushions and materials with a nice haptic feel.
Warm, muted colours and hand-made plant pots are creating a comfortable atmosphere.
Retro-look sunshades provide atmospheric lighting and dimmable outdoor lights, charming accents.
Timeless modern
Modern and yet timeless – what seems like a contradiction, reflects the current design demand for garden furniture. It is about reliability, regarding both waterproof materials and the design of the furniture itself.
Without fashionable accessories clear shapes and ergonomic lines characterise the design of the ‘green living room’.
This approach is further accentuated with the use of reliable and robust materials like natural wood, leather or concrete.
Durable solutions not only contribute towards outdoor comfort, but also preserve resources.
Elegant lightness: Relaxed outdoor feeling
Times are challenging, so a more relaxed and care-free life in the garden is welcome.
Current design for outdoor furniture stands out with a filigree lightness that exudes both naturalness and elegance.
Thin lines and organic shapes are united harmoniously with earthy tones and so , reserved colours.
Carefully designed teak wood trimmings and low dining chairs are reminiscent of the elegant design of the 1950s.
Also on trend: A relaxed, Mediterranean ambience and the quiet simplicity of Scandinavian design.

Green design: Sustainable material use
The design process is becoming more and more sustainable – and that is just the beginning.
With modern climate screening tools, the CO2 footprint of new garden furniture is minimised in a targeted manner.
Materials like aluminium are reduced. Recycled plastics are used to produce chairs, tables or plant pots.
The implementation of regrowing raw materials like wood or bamboo from certified production contributes towards promoting responsible forest management.
The wide selection of environmentally-friendly materials satisfies di erent design preferences and connects sustainability with aesthetic demand in an impressive way.
Design diversity instead of uniform green: More design possibilities for the garden
The garden is far more than merely green space – it o ers unlimited possibilities to be creative.
Whether modular dining sets, elegant sofas on the terrace or space-saving stackable tables and chairs: Modern garden furniture is flexibly adapted to satisfy the di erent needs and occasions.
Multifunctional furniture and creative design concepts like natural plants or Blackbox Gardening transform the outdoor section into a versatile place of retreat for relaxing and spending time.
Comfy, timeless design, resource saving, design lightness and diversity – these trends are characterising the design of current and future outdoor areas.

INSPIRING
With a quest to enrich people’s lives by creating joy from everyday actions, IHA Global Innovation Awards (gia) winner BALMUDA is a company that unites creative product design, arresting style and big hits of happiness, writes Michelle Hespe

The BALMUDA flagship store in Aoyama, Tokyo rises from the concrete footpath with the same sense of precision, style and enchantment as the exquisitely crafted products showcased within.
The building’s arresting style – smooth concrete walls and two stories of shining glass framed by black steel and dramatic lighting – has the same look and feel as the company’s toaster that was designed by founder Gen Terao in 2015.
The toaster went on to be an icon – a status that the building will no doubt also achieve.
The designers of the building – Nikken Space Design – created a museum-meetsbar type of space, with the ground floor offering customers the chance to view modern works of art as they would in a
museum.
The gia judges and jury were in awe of the store’s appearance and the unique experience it offers customers, commenting that BALMUDA’s ‘architecture is beautiful, striking, with a Guggenheim-like feel –beginning with the front window’s fixturing and the skillful use of lighting.’
‘Since our founding, we were unwavering in our hope that our products – which we create with the belief that “if such tools existed, the world would surely be a better place” – will enrich the daily lives of those who use them,’ says Gen.
‘You can experience all of our products in-store, but to make this experience even more worthwhile, we display the history of the ideas, the designers in charge of the products, and what they went through before bringing the product to market.’
Gen goes on to explain that consumers don’t judge BALMUDA products solely on quantifiable specs when comparing them with other products available.
‘We communicate the incredible, unquantifiable experiences that they get through our products. This was also a crucial point when it came to designing our stores,’ he says.
BALMUDA doesn’t rely on market research or creating products that it’s confident will sell.
‘The store may be recognized as a home appliance manufacturer, but it’s not a company that makes home appliances in order to increase sales,’ he says.
‘Instead, BALMUDA is about creating products that are truly desired.
‘We work with the vision of enriching the

lives of people who share our sensibilities and who feel the beauty, sense of surprise, and a joy of owning and using our products.’
This concept of basing BALMUDA’s brand upon the happiness that it brings to shoppers’ lives is evident as soon as you visit the company’s website.
Rather than leading with images of products for sale, the website is like a photography site, with images of people enjoying life and everything it has to offer.
A sun rises over a hill; a gentleman enjoys a slice of toast while smiling at his cat; a woman straightens a man’s tie, and a young girl plays with a hula hoop.
This makes perfect sense. ‘We’re very happy if having BALMUDA products in a consumer’s daily life helps them to feel a sense of joy that they’ve never felt before,’ Gen says.
‘BALMUDA gives shape to the desire to make things that people truly want.
‘By providing ideas that the world has never seen before, customers connect with our ideas and are able to live richer lives.
‘Like ripples on the surface of water, we feel great joy seeing the number of such customers grow.’
Those followers are increasing by the day. BALMUDA has 150,000 followers on Instagram, and an almost cult-like following of fans who happily spread the word.
‘We know that the true value of our products can’t be easily understood without a consumer experiencing them,’ Gen says.
‘So, word of mouth from people who truly love our products has been our most reliable advertising. That’s why we place the utmost importance on fan marketing in Japan.’
Before launching BALMUDA, Gen dreamed of being a rock musician. ‘I like rock music because it’s useful to people,’ he says.
‘Music can save people’s hearts from despair.’
Gen’s parents both had creative jobs, with his father being a potter and his mother a florist, so it’s not surprising that he has a rare creative streak.
‘Father always told me: “You’re different from others, so don’t try to be like them”.’
What Gen has created with BALMUDA is not like anything else, and it all started with one product made in his apartment, with no manufacturing experience behind him.
‘I came up with a tool to dissipate heat from laptop computers, which at the time would quickly get hot and freeze,’ he explains.
‘I thought – if the shape of the base was at an angle, it would be easier to type and dissipate heat, so I invented a cooling pad for laptops, with the emphasis on solving the problems, and a very cool shape.’
Gen was a one-man band, so he designed a logo, launched a website and managed sales.
‘The journey was never smooth sailing, and we were always on the verge of collapse,’ he says. ‘But BALMUDA has managed to stay afloat and now we have around 100 employees.
‘None of them simply follows instructions. Everyone joins BALMUDA because they want to accomplish something at a unique and interesting company where they make a difference.’
Gen says that as a CEO, he never uses the

word impossible.
‘Because there may be a way that we haven’t yet discovered. I ask my employees to think outside the box and act with the utmost self-confidence, believing in even the slightest possibility that something exists.’
‘I had never had a goal of BALMUDA being accepted by the masses, because I didn’t think people outside of Japan would understand our philosophy,’ Gen says.
‘However, the fact that our store has become worthy of receiving a gia award is
the crystallization of ideas from everyone involved.
‘It’s given our employees much happiness, and a strong sense of confidence in our professions.
‘Winning a gia award has also given us the reassurance that our accumulated efforts have been right.
‘We won’t change the direction and future of BALMUDA because we believe in it. However, that future has become more strongly imagined than ever before.’
Gen has never wavered in his belief that BALMUDA’s delivery of high-quality

experiences and products will improve the daily lives of its consumers.
He says with his usual conviction: ‘This belief is just the axis, but the goal is always changing, and I want to do something different and more fun tomorrow, than I did today.
‘We envision a future where, like cool rock musicians, we can share our creativity with people across the world to make their days happier.’

Liam Kelly, our retail gardening guru, runs through some of his advice of the past year for us in a special look back over the previous twelve months – the result is an indispensable recap of some of his most impactful advice, in one easy-to-read o ering!

The Chinese curse of having to live in interesting times seems to be finally upon us on several levels.
For now, of course, we need to focus on why we are here – from the retail point of view.
As I write this, from the view of the garden retail sector, it has been a very difficult start to the year with rain, storms and floods affecting sales, structures and footfall.
At least it is something we can, to a better extent, control in these challenging times – and, perhaps selfishly, use as an interruption from other uncontrollable matters.
With all of that in mind perhaps it’s no harm to revisit and reinforce some thoughts and topics.
Luckily, the sun is currently shining, a rare occurrence up until now, but it’s hard to look forward without looking back to the past.
There are many topics from the past year that are as relevant now as they were when they were first written – an important reminder that the past should not remain buried, but should be studied and reused for the future.
Early last summer we looked, perhaps
dangerously prophetically, at chaos.
Chaotic minds can spawn new ideas, and from random thoughts great and new merchandising ideas can form – this is still a relevant topic for this time of year.
Back in the day, most garden centres and plant retailers arranged their plants by category depending on what type of plant they were classed as, so climbers, conifers, perennials, etc. all had their own neat sections within the plant area and the plants were arranged in alphabetical order within those sections – pigeonholed.
This changed somewhat a few years ago when plants began to be merchandised by their end use, so for example shade-loving plants or groundcover plants were put together.
But that is – or should – be changing again as the customer’s buying habits

‘There is a fine line with many houseplants as to whether they are more suited to indoors or outdoors.’
evolve.
Those who come into a garden centre with a list of plants are now the exception not the rule, so most of the new generation of gardeners visit plant retailers to be inspired and to purchase what they see, not what they know about or have seen elsewhere, with the exception of coming across something on social media of course.
Therefore, there is a new need for those who layout and merchandise a plant area to be much more creative in how they show off the plants they wish to sell, especially now where Chaos Gardening is a trend – the idea of randomly positioning plants that look well together without care of spacing or aspect, or longevity for that matter.
This concept involves merchandising plants in a more mixed fashion, where perennials, grasses and shrubs are used together in most of the displays within the plant area in what looks like a random fashion but in fact has a purpose.
The main reason is of course to inspire the customer to purchase, and this is achieved by combining plants that look well together in a display, and not in just rows, but in blocks and drifts that show off the plants to their absolute best, just like in the garden.
Late summer our topic was how emotion can drive change in retailers. Specifically love and hate.
On the hate side we looked at how that time of the year the gardening department can lose some of its shine.
Turnover tends to drop off sharply, and we are often left with the remnants of summer plant stock sitting forlornly on benches as it succumbs to the inevitable.
Leaves and other detritus tend to accumulate as the retail plant area doesn’t quite get the attention it had during the previous busy months.
There are gaps on tables and old, faded signage sits askew and gets left to bleach and leach in the weather.
The area as a whole loses the lustre and brightness it possessed, becoming an area less frequented by both staff and customers, and certainly not a place to love.
But there is love at that time of the year too, for example, spring flowering bulbs are often a neglected category with some retailers.
This promise of spring colour should be shown the appreciation and attention it

surely deserves.
Effective and colourful displays should be given pride of place on clean and tidy stands with appropriate signage and information to entice and communicate that love to the customer.
And even at this time of year that hatred of neglected displays – due to the busyness of the time of year – needs to be adopted and communicated to keep displays tidy from a housekeeping point of view and, more importantly, selling from a retail point of view.
Conversely there is so much to love about
this time of year it’s almost impossible not to apply such emotion to merchandised displays, and we surely need to focus more on love than hate right now.
Late last autumn we looked at the use of light and colour in retail. Outdoor retail spaces can feel quite dull at that time of year, apart from the occasional bright days and even then, they are dependent on having some colour on benches and the quality of the retail structure that protects the plants.
This is where the choice and colour of the plants that are purchased by the retailer for sale to customers at this time of year is

crucial to how well they will sell, and how good they will look.
This sounds obvious in one way but colour purchasing is quite often a key point that is overlooked in retail.
Busier
If we focus back to those ultrabright days we mentioned above, which also tend to be the days when garden centres are generally busier, we can remember those colours that stand out on the colour wheel, and more importantly those that don’t.
That intensity of autumn/winter light tends to suit reds, oranges, and yellows especially, but also certain shades of purple as well as true, bright white.
These are in contrast to pinks, blues and violet/lavender shades that don’t pop at that time of the year.
All of this is still relevant for summer, but we can focus more on some of those paler pinks and lavender shades that do look well in the more intense, top-down, summer light.
The truth is that all colours work well at this time of the year but there will always be a sway towards those that are stronger and bolder, so purchasing should be adapted accordingly.
Trends
In spring we looked at some possible trends for 2026 without getting too wrapped up in
the topic, as these fads fade quite quickly from the public consciousness and social media as new ones arrive.
But trends are also a good way of introducing a bit of variety and difference into the garden retail offering for a new season; something to base new purchasing on and a way of exciting staff as well as customers with new stock, new stories and new merchandising.
At the very least fads should be seen as a useful means of communication, more so than an absolute list of the things that you have to get behind for any given season.
Three of these are:
Not all houseplants need to stay indoors all-year-round, and many will benefit from a time outdoors during the warmer part of the year.
There is a fine line with many houseplants as to whether they are more suited to indoors or outdoors.
For example, smaller ones such as Spider Plants and Purple leaved Gynura could work well in hanging pots and bring a touch of the exotic outdoors.
Bigger plants too such as Alocasias, Strelitzias and Yucca will probably do better outdoors in a semi-shaded area.
This concept can be promoted both in the houseplant section and can be linked to suitable containers – those on wheels – and
Since establishing Retail Services & Solutions in 2007, Liam has become one of the most effective people within the retail side of Irish horticulture.

His knowledge of the mindset and ethos of those in this sector, combined with his problem-solving ability, experience and hands-on work ethic make him uniquely placed to offer advice and help to those who need it.

hanging planters that work both indoors and out.
Not terribly new but think big, leafy, tropical looking plants for this one. Tree ferns, bamboos, Fatsia, hardy banana plants plus some of the showier flowering plants like cannas are all part of the concept.
These are all easy enough to source these days and need to be promoted and merchandised together to make the most of sales.
Once again there is a tie-in with containers, and big ceramic and terracotta pots are well suited to these plants both in size and in look.
Some of these require plenty of water and feed so there are lots of linked sales that can be marketed with this look.
The idea of a secluded, peaceful place in the garden is of universal appeal.
And with some clever merchandising this concept can be replicated in the retail environment. Think seating, arbours, statuary, water features and screening –both living and structural.
Given adequate space this can be a lucrative sell of high-end lines that look well together, where the display is key to selling the idea of a peaceful retreat constructed in a quiet corner of the garden.
That ends our history recap, and here’s hoping for uninteresting times and better weather for the rest of the year …

As warmer days and longer evenings return, retailers can expect increased demand for outdoor living products.
To support stockists during this busy season, Calor has launched its summer BBQ campaign, showcasing two key products in its patio gas range – the compact 6kg cylinder, ideal for barbecues and smaller patio heaters, and the popular 11kg cylinder.
This year, Calor is also introducing a major advancement for the Irish market: Ireland’s first and only renewable patio gas.
Although the cylinders look exactly like the familiar grey patio gas, they now contain a certified blend with 20% BioLPG.
Made from sustainably sourced renewable vegetable oils, waste, and residue materials, BioLPG is chemically identical to conventional LPG.
This means customers can use it immediately with any existing appliance without adjustments, making the transition to a lowercarbon energy source simple and seamless.
The 6kg and 11kg cylinders together o er a versatile range that suits a variety
of outdoor setups – from small balconies and compact grills to larger patio heaters and family barbecues.
By incorporating renewable BioLPG across the patio gas range, Calor is providing consumers with the same trusted performance while helping them make more sustainable choices.
With interest in lowcarbon living continuing to rise, renewable patio gas represents a valuable opportunity for retailers.
Stocking Calor patio gas allows retail stores to expand their sustainable product o ering and cater to environmentally conscious consumers seeking practical ways to reduce their carbon footprint.

For 25 years, Combilift has been revolutionising the way companies handle and store goods.

Our pioneering product range of multidirectional and pedestrian forklifts, straddle carriers, mobile gantries and container loaders allows you to maneuver long loads safely, reduce aisle widths and increase the amount of space available for storage.

Handling DIY and building materials of various shapes, sizes and weights such as pipes, timber, and palletised goods, can pose several challenges for traditional forklifts.
Choosing the right equipment for each specific task will enable companies to thrive by optimising their storage facilities for better capacity, allowing quick loading and offloading for faster turnaround, whilst ensuring safe operation across their facilities.
With over 28 years of experience, Irish forklift manufacturer Combilift offers an all-in-one product range that eliminates the need for multiple machines to complete a single task, resulting in reduced fleet size, increased productivity, and the elimination of timeconsuming double handling.
Multidirectional forklift models, such as those in the C-Series and CB range, are designed to travel sideways while handling long and bulky loads, such as timber panels or pipes.
The sideways function eliminates the need for overhead carrying while navigating narrow aisles and tight spaces, significantly reducing the risk of injury and collisions.
This allows for much better and cost-effective use of all available space, and results in an all-round safer working environment.
An additional safety feature is that these forklifts are built with a very low centre of gravity, allowing for a low-to-the-ground movement of the load.
The C-Series boasts an integrated platform, providing a stable base for resting your load during transportation whereas the innovative Combi-CB’s compact size and excellent manoeuvrability means it is also perfect for transporting palletised loads.
Whether you need to safely handle pallets or long loads, Combilift’s pedestrian stacker range is also an ideal choice for busy building supply and DIY stores.
The pedestrian range is equipped with the patented and award-winning multi-position tiller arm, which ensures maximum safety for both the operator and nearby pedestrians.
This innovative feature allows the operator to remain in the safest position while working in narrow aisles – at the side of the truck rather than
at the rear, as with other pedestrian stackers. This, in turn, reduces the risk of the operator becoming trapped between the truck and the racking and ensures full visibility of the load and the surrounding area.
With nearly three decades of expertise and over 100,000 machines in operation worldwide, Combilift continues to drive Lifting Innovation, helping businesses make their material handling operations safer, more sustainable and efficient while optimising their existing facilities. Use on tables & chairs, doors, shelving, cupboards, bannisters and window ledges to name a few.
Antique Pine, Dark Oak, Ebony, Oak, Mahogany, Pine, Teak and Walnut colours are available with a satin finish in 250ml, 500ml, 1 and 2.5 litre sizes.
Clear gloss, satin and matt are available 250ml, 500ml, 1, 2.5 and 5 litre sizes.
Rustins varnishes have built a strong reputation among professionals and DIY enthusiasts alike for their high quality, ease of use, and long-lasting finish. Whether used on wood furniture, floors, or craft projects, Rustins products are known for delivering reliable protection and a beautiful appearance.
One of the standout features of Rustins varnishes is their excellent durability.
They provide a tough, hardwearing finish that resists scratches, water, heat, and general wear and tear.

This makes them particularly suitable for high-traffic surfaces such as dining tables, kitchen worktops, and wooden floors.
The varnish forms a strong barrier that helps to preserve the integrity and look of the wood beneath for years to come.
and are easy to blend for custom finishes.
Rustins’ varnishes and lacquers are known for their durability and smooth application.
Available in water-based and solvent-based formulations, they provide a long-lasting protective coating that resists heat, moisture, and abrasion.
Their quick-drying water-based options are ideal for interior use, offering low odour and eco-friendliness, while their traditional solventbased products deliver a deeper, richer finish often preferred for restoration projects.
The brand’s range of oils, including Danish Oil, Teak Oil, and Tung Oil, nourish and protect wood by penetrating deep into the grain.
These oils bring out the natural beauty of wood while offering a protective, waterresistant finish. Rustins Danish Oil, for instance, is a customer favourite thanks to its easy application and attractive satin sheen.
It’s ideal for food-safe surfaces like kitchen counters and cutting boards.
Rustins celeb rates a century of Excellence
Ease of application is another significant advantage. Rustins offers both water-based and solvent-based varnishes, giving users the flexibility to choose based on their preferences and the specific requirements of a project.
The water-based versions are quick-drying, low in odour, and environmentally friendly—ideal for indoor projects or poorly ventilated spaces.
Rustins varnishes are also known for their aesthetic appeal. Available in a variety of finishes— matt, satin, gloss – they allow users to achieve the exact look they want.
The varnish enhances the natural grain of the wood without yellowing over time, maintaining clarity and depth.
This makes Rustins an ideal choice for both new woodworking projects and restoration work, where preserving the wood’s original character is key.
In addition, Rustins products often come in multiple sizes, from small tins for hobbyists to larger containers for professional use. One of Rustins’ key strengths lies in its diverse product range.
The brand offers wood stains, varnishes, oils, waxes, and cleaners designed for both indoor and outdoor use. Whether you’re treating new wood or restoring old furniture, Rustins provides the right product for the job.
Their wood stains are particularly popular, delivering vibrant and consistent colour while enhancing the natural grain.
They are available in a wide spectrum of shades
Rustins also offers high-quality waxes, such as their beeswax formulations, which are perfect for achieving a classic hand-rubbed finish.
These products not only enhance the wood’s appearance but also add a layer of protection against dust and moisture.
In summary, Rustins woodcare products offer a comprehensive, user-friendly solution for anyone working with wood.
Their blend of traditional craftsmanship and modern formulations ensures superior performance, making Rustins a trusted brand for wood lovers seeking to protect, enhance, and preserve wood in all its forms.

We all value our living space. The more space we have around us the more comfortable conditions for work, relax and fun. By opening the new FAKRO PPP-V preSelect MAX window outward you gain more space within the attic, you can easily approach the opened window and enjoy unrestricted views of the outside. The latest PPP-V preSelect MAX top hung and pivot window by FAKRO is richly equipped LUX class window. Products in this class are distinguished by highest quality of workmanship, innovative solutions and superb thermal insulation performance.

The preSelect MAXwindow comes with two independent opening mechanisms. The sash can be opened outwards from the top and via centre pivot. The innovative hardware system guarantees the complete stability of the sash in both opening functions. The outward opening option provides an additional space within the attic and panoramic views of the outside. In pivot mode the sash can be locked into position to facilitate cleaning of the outer glass. A special bolt fitted into the sash locks the window and makes this operation highly comfortable and safe.
The innovative hardware system applied in the preSelect MAX ensures high functionality and durability

of the design, allowing the sash to be opened up to 45°, which is nearly 30% more than when compared to the previous model. This significant improvement allows for better use of the additional space created within the room. This is an excellent solution for people who care about the comfort and value a wonderful, unrestricted views of surrounding areas. What is more, preSelect MAX windows are available in large sizes with triple-glazing, even in the size of 134x160cm. They also comply with emergency requirements (subject to size criteria).

Opening method can be switched using the preSelect sliding switch placed in the bottom part of the frame for improved comfort and operation. The switch is invisible when the window is fully closed. The handle 'Elegant' used to open the window and positioned in the base of the sash allows for easy operation and two-step micro-opening.

Windows are manufactured using high quality pinewood, glued in layers and vacuum impregnated to ensure the top quality and durability. The window is equipped with a number of unique features that improve efficiency performance, durability and air quality within the attic space. Operational safety and anti-burglary resistance have also been brought to a higher level.
