SPLENDID Pieced together from the remnants of unfinished patchwork projects, these self portraits draw on the improvisational and “make-do” qualities of patchwork quilts. Within the patchwork are fragments of old clothing, feed sacks, bed sheets and even handkerchiefs, all saved and lovingly stitched together to create something new, useful and precious. Most of these projects were found on Ebay and date from the 1930s and 1940s; they show an inventiveness in the reshaping of scraps of fabric into traditional patterns - Apple Core, Broken Dishes and Tumbling Block. These fragments tell the story of an unknown maker, patiently and painstakingly creating something out of nothing. I will never know why these works were not finished. But incorporating them into the imagery of my self-portraits, I bring the characteristics of patchwork into the background of my work. Portraiture is a fashioning of identity, which in these works is repeated through the transformation of scraps into my self image. The inherent vanity and affectation of portraiture is revealed in these self depictions - as much about role play as an inherent individual truth or identity. There is a parallel between the commemorative aspects of quilting and the historicising aspect of portraiture. The stories are in the patterns and textures, the fragments and layers.
