An Appointment with The Wicker Man On a distant and remote Scottish island, the Loch Parry Theatre Players mount a production of The Wicker Man. When their lead actor goes missing in mysterious circumstances, they call on the services of a television cop from the mainland to step in and save their production… Regularly popping up at the top of "Best Horror Film of all Time" lists, with an unforgettable sense of creeping dread, a wonderfully memorable score by Paul Giovanni, career defining performances from Edward Woodward and Christopher Lee and arguably the best ending in cinema history, The Wicker Man is regarded as a true film classic. And now, in an affectionate new adaptation, the National Theatre of Scotland gives a gallus round of applause to this immortal chronicle of strange goings-on in a wee village. Co-written by and starring one of Scotland’s wittiest performers, Greg Hemphill of Chewin’ the Fat fame, An Appointment with the Wicker Man revels in a once-in-a-lifetime line-up of comic talent including that son of Saltcoats, Johnny McKnight, widely regarded as the likely inheritor of Stanley Baxter’s glittering mantle. Johnny IS the Loch Parry Theatre Players’ director, cajoling deep and meaningful performances from his actors as they am-dram, sing and dance their way towards their production’s incendiary finale. Directed by the National Theatre of Scotland’s very own Vicky Featherstone, An Appointment with The Wicker Man is a love letter to a unique and timeless cult masterpiece, except that someone forgot to pay the postage. It is at once a deliciously wicked homage to, and a tender celebration of, a piece of cinema history that reveals for us the spooky undercurrents we always did believe were lurking just below the surface of Scottish village life. This adaptation messes with forces it can't possibly comprehend but at the end of the night, only one thing is for sure...someone's going to burn for this. Tue-Thur

THIS MONTH AT THE LEMON TREE STUDIO PASSING PLACES TUESDAY 1 MAY

Tosca Giacomo Puccini - revival of the 1980 production Sung in Italian with English Supertitles. Anthony Besch’s celebrated production has travelled to opera houses around the world since it was first created for Scottish Opera in 1980. Masterfully conceived by a consummate storyteller, Besch’s much-loved production transports Puccini’s powerful drama to Fascist Italy in the 1930s, a setting entirely in tune with the dark intensity of this passionate tale. Floria Tosca, a famous diva, is engaged to Mario Cavaradossi. But Scarpia, the sadistic Chief of Police, is infatuated with her and plans to kill her lover and take her for himself. As Scarpia’s schemes unfold, Tosca and Cavaradossi are drawn into a devastating chain of events that has little chance of ending well. Puccini’s music, at times heartbreakingly tender, at times powerful and harrowing, captures the sweeping span of this epic story - from the exquisite stillness of a silent dawn in Rome, to the raw drama of Tosca’s final, desperate plight. Susannah Glanville, star of Opera North’s 2009 production, returns to the role of Tosca and English baritone Robert Poulton is Scarpia. Spanish tenor José Ferrero makes his Scottish Opera debut as Cavaradossi.

STALLS Opening times HMT is open from 9.30am Monday to Saturday, with varying closing times, depending on show times. The theatre is also open on Sundays during certain performances, please check productions for details. Front-of-house facilities include a restaurant, a café bar, stunning corporate hospitality facilities and a box office in the glass foyer.

BALCONY

One of the most beautiful theatres in Britain, His Majesty’s Theatre was designed by the legendary theatre architect Frank Matcham with his trademark proscenium arch and pillarless balconies. Since opening in 1906, it has continually attracted a huge range of top quality theatre productions from smash-hit musicals to top class drama and dance. Seating around 1470, the theatre has undergone three major refurbishments in its 100-year history, in the 1930s,1980s and most recently an £8m redevelopment in 2004/5, which successfully added a contemporary aspect to the historic Edwardian building, with new facilities such as the restaurant and cafe, giving Aberdeen a 21st century venue to be proud of.

Handel’s Water Music

Schumann’s ‘Rhenish’ Symphony

Handel Water Music in D and G Rameau Suite from ‘Dardanus’ Handel Cantata: Delirio Amoroso Emmanuelle Haïm Conductor/Harpsichord Camilla Tilling Soprano Emmanuelle Haïm brings a special élan and grace to everything she touches. She returns to the SCO to spark up January with zesty dance suites and a sensational showpiece for soprano Camilla Tilling - a passion-fired display of fireworks and musical fantasy composed by Handel as a young man in Italy.

Richard Strauss Till Eulenspiegels lustige Streiche Prokofiev Piano Concerto No.4 Richard Strauss Prelude to Act 1 of Guntram Schumann Symphony No.3 (Rhenish) Jun Märkl Conductor Denis Kozhukhin Piano Prokofiev’s Fourth Piano Concerto is a mercurial gem for left hand alone. Till Eulenspiegel is one of Strauss’s most brilliant orchestral showpieces, and the Act 1 Prelude to his first opera Guntram has a Wagnerian breadth that makes it a fitting introduction to Schumann’s 'Rhenish' Symphony, with its grand sonic vistas.

Cherubini Overture, Démophoon Beethoven Piano Concerto No 5 ‘Emperor’ Beethoven Symphony No 3 ‘Eroica’ Andrew Manze Conductor Llŷr Williams Piano Hear Beethoven alongside the contemporary he most admired (Cherubini’s Requiem was sung at Beethoven’s funeral), as the great man celebrates both an emperor and a revolutionary in the same evening. Llŷr Williams’ Beethoven is not to be missed. He brings immense authority but also something fascinatingly unworldly to this music.

Haydn Symphony No 44 in E minor ‘ Trauer’ Luke Bedford New work – world première Alwyn Pastoral Fantasia Mozart Sinfonia Concertante in E flat K364 A joyful celebration of two musical revolutionaries, Mozart and Haydn, whose magnetic vitality continues to fascinate. Au revoir Stéphane: Rite of Spring

Richard Strauss Don Juan Haydn Cello Concerto in C major Brahms Symphony No.1 Donald Runnicles Conductor Martin Storey Cello Brahms’s First Symphony is one of the truly life-affirming masterpieces of romantic music. BBC SSO Chief Conductor Donald Runnicles starts the concert with the explosion of heroic energy that is Strauss’s orchestral showpiece Don Juan, and the orchestra’s talented principal cellist Martin Storey shows his mettle in Haydn’s delightful C major Concerto.

Debussy Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune Barber Violin Concerto Stravinsky Rite of Spring Stéphane Denève Conductor James Ehnes Violin Debussy’s Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune astonished the world of western music. Two decades later, Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring blew that world sky-high. Stéphane Denève and the RSNO will deliver some serious voltage in Stéphane’s final appearance in Aberdeen while Samuel Barber’s Violin Concerto played beautifully by James Ehnes will act as the calm before the storm.

The Soldiers Following their latest album Thinking of Home OR Home in my Heart, The Soldiers embark on a new UK Tour. The Soldiers created history by being the first group of serving soldiers to hit the British pop charts. They are soldiers first and foremost, having served in Afghanistan, Iraq and Kuwait. They are real life heroes, have several medals between them and can be called up at any time. Their two top 10 albums, Coming Home and Letters Home, released in the space of a year, exceeded sales of 800,000 and have helped raise over half a million pounds for army charities. The Soldiers have performed for Her Majesty The Queen at the Royal Variety and at The Festival of Remembrance two years in a row.

Located in the heart of the city centre, the Music Hall is Aberdeen’s premier concert hall venue, hosting a wide variety of gigs, performances, shows and events, from classical concerts to contemporary comedy. Since 1882, it has been the heart and soul of community life not just in the city but in the North-east, drawing young and old alike through its famously-pillared front door. An iconic landmark in Union Street, it is a proud example of the work of Aberdeen’s most celebrated architect Archibald Simpson, who designed a building for the citizens of the city which is still serving them faithfully to this day.

This breath-taking musical homage explores the highs and lows of an incredible yet ultimately tragic life, providing insights into the very essence of the singer's character. "She brings the songs to life with terrific panache and dramatic flair" The Scotsman ***** "A star is born" The Herald

A heart-warming story of adventure, tragedy and success following the migration of Italians from their sunny hillsides to towns all over Scotland, celebrating everything that is great about Italy and Scotland. They opened cafes, sold ice cream and fish and chips, but were ostracised and vulnerable during the Second World War. In the post war years, second- and third-generation Italians made a unique contribution to life in Scotland.
