Where it all Began
During a meeting, theatre usher Jaime Cruz announced to Teatro La Plaza director Chela De Ferrari his desire to act. Cruz, like almost every actor in Peruvian theatre company Teatro La Plaza’s Hamlet, has Down syndrome. He is Hamlet but so are all the other seven actors at various stages of the play.
Chela De Ferrari: “I imagined those iconic words, ‘To be or not to be’, spoken by someone whose very right to be
meant to be held by one iconic actor, but rather to be shared — to become a collective voice?”
From that conversation, De Ferrari pictured him wearing the Prince’s crown and wrote the retelling of Shakespeare’s classic.

The famous monologue is used a springboard to explore what it means to in a with Down syndrome.
