The Cone Gatherers By Robin Jenkins Adapted by Peter Arnott Directed by Kenny Ireland Designed by Hayden Griffin Music by John Kielty The Cone Gatherers is a haunting tale of good versus evil, demonstrating the destructive power of envy and prejudice. This classic Scottish novel tells the tale of two brothers gathering cones in a forest on a Scottish estate in order to replenish the trees felled for the war effort. Neil, and his hunchbacked brother Calum, lead happy and contented lives in these beautiful surroundings, completely detached from the destruction of the Second World War. However, their innocence and happiness is threatened by the dark, obsessive hatred of Duror, the gamekeeper and the deep prejudices of the class system of the time. The obsessions of Duror grow stronger, building to a devastating climax. Robin Jenkins’ greatest novel is brought to life by the creative team behind HMT’s two critically-acclaimed productions, Sunset Song and The Silver Darlings, in a brand new adaptation by Scottish dramatist Peter Arnott.

The Herald

ADAPTED BY HUGH JANES FROM GHOST STORIES BY CHARLES DICKENS A JOURNEY TO THE VERY EDGE OF TERROR In an ancient, crumbling mansion, sheltering from the howling winds that tear across the surrounding desolate moorland, two men stumble across a dark and terrifying secret that will change their lives forever… When a young book dealer, David Filde, is employed by a former associate of his uncle to catalogue an impressive library, he finds an incredible array of rare and antiquated books. But as a series of strange and unexplained events conspire to keep Filde from his work, he realises that if he is to convince his sceptical employer that the mysterious phenomena he is experiencing are real, they must journey together to the very edge of terror, and beyond, to discover the source of the ghostly night-time visitations… David Robb is perhaps best known for playing Dr Clarkson in the first two series of the award-winning ITV drama series Downton Abbey and he returns in the third series this autumn. His many other TV roles have seen him star in I Claudius, The Flame Trees of Thika and Monarch of the Glen. James Roache has featured in TV dramas including ITV's Cold Blood and the feature Rise of the Footsoldier. His recent work includes a 20 episode story in Coronation Street. Don’t dare see it alone!

Autumn Season Scottish Ballet presents an extraordinary triple bill tracing a line through dance from the highly physical to the seductively graceful. Fresh from its world premiere as part of the Cultural Olympiad this summer, Martin Lawrance’s Run For It is a high energy work inspired by the power of Olympic athletes. Classical discipline meets playfulness in William Forsythe’s Workwithinwork, a study of the possibilities of motion. The dancers create a breathtaking display of fascinating angles and lines, leaving traces of their movements as they go. Drawing the evening to a fiery close is Hans van Manen’s Five Tangos. Performed by Scottish Ballet for the first time, this sizzling work combines classical ballet with the passion and dramatic flourishes of the tango.

Sung in English with English Supertitles. Following the huge success of The Barber of Seville and The Marriage of Figaro, Sir Thomas Allen and Simon Higlett return to take on the fantastical charms of Mozart’s most inventive opera. Set in a spectacular visual world inspired by ‘steam punk’ Victoriana, this promises to be a stylish and imaginative telling of this much-loved piece. Tamino is shown a painting of a beautiful young maiden and immediately falls in love. She is Pamina, the daughter of the mysterious Queen of the Night, who has been abducted by her mother’s arch enemy, Sarastro. Tamino sets out to rescue her with just a magic flute and Papageno, a bumbling bird-catcher looking for love, to help him. But as their quest progresses the men start to question the motives of those around them, and they soon realise that all is not quite as it seems… A beguiling mix of comedy, fantasy and pantomime, The Magic Flute is also a profound story of the search for love, wisdom and truth. Mozart’s music effortlessly evokes the full gamut of emotions on stage – from heartfelt love songs and comic exchanges to explosive coloratura in the infamous Queen of the Night arias. Supported by Dunard Fund and The Scottish Opera Syndicate.

HIS MAJESTY’S THEATRE “Lindsay Posner’s triumphant production. Brilliant, vintage Leigh”

Monday 4 - Saturday 9 February 2013 THEATRE ROYAL BATH PRODUCTIONS AND MENIER CHOCOLATE FACTORY PRESENT

Abigail’s Party BY MIKE LEIGH DIRECTED BY LINDSAY POSNER DIRECT FROM THE WEST END After a triumphant West End run, Lindsay Posner’s acclaimed revival of one of the most popular plays ever written is touring the UK. Donna Summer is playing on the stereo. Dishes of cheese and pineapple are on the coffee table…the social get-together from hell is about to begin. Beverly, and estate agent husband Laurence, have invited round new neighbours, Tony and Ange and nervous divorcee Sue, twitchy about the party her fifteen year old daughter, Abigail, is throwing over the road. As Beverly plies the guests with alcohol, cigarettes, Demis Roussos and nibbles, this horribly compelling evening descends into drunkenness and debauchery. Comedy, drama and tragedy combine into an iconic piece of theatre. Mike Leigh’s comedy became an instant classic when it first appeared as a BBC Play For Today in 1977, the year of the Queen’s Silver Jubilee. It is a ruthlessly accurate observation of the pretensions of suburbia, a world obsessed with class and taste and ruled over by the monstrous Beverly!

The Mousetrap A CLASSIC. A LANDMARK. A LEGEND. The Mousetrap is famous around the world as being the longest running show of any kind in the history of British theatre – with over 24,000 performances it’s a play to be proud of. And to celebrate 60 incredible years on stage, it’s going on tour for the very first time ever, with an all-star cast to give you a once in a lifetime opportunity to see this masterpiece here at HMT. The scene is set when a group of people gathered in a remote part of the countryside discover, to their horror, that there is a murderer in their midst. Who can it be? One by one the suspicious characters reveal their sordid pasts until at the last, nerve-shredding moment the identity and the motive are finally revealed. In her own inimitable style, Dame Agatha Christie has created an atmosphere of shuddering suspense and a brilliantly intricate plot where murder lurks around every corner.

Director Martin Lloyd-Evans stages a vibrant, stylish, all singing, all dancing show. Mercilessly parodying Victorian society and its very particular moral values, The Pirates of Penzance is exquisitely observed and wonderfully funny. The fantastic ensemble cast includes celebrated G&S stalwarts Steven Page and Richard Suart, and Scottish Opera favourite Graeme Broadbent (The Barber of Seville 2011, The Rake’s Progress 2012). Adapted by STEPHEN MALLATRATT From the novel by SUSAN HILL Everybody in the theatre can hear you scream! Unanimously acclaimed by the critics, The Woman in Black combines the power and intensity of live theatre with a cinematic quality inspired by the world of film noir. A lawyer engages a sceptical young actor to help him tell his terrifying story and exorcise the fear that grips his soul. It all begins innocently enough, but as they reach further into his darkest memories the borders between make believe and reality begin to blur and the flesh begins to creep...

9 to 5 9 to 5 The Musical is a hilarious new musical comedy, based on the hit movie and centres on three office workers who turn the tables on their sexist, egotistical, lying, hypocritical bigot of a boss. They conspire to take control of the company and learn there’s nothing they can’t do - even in a man’s world. Outrageous, thought provoking and even a little romantic, 9 to 5 The Musical is about teaming up and taking care of business.

BALCONY

One of the most beautiful theatres in Britain, His Majesty’s Theatre was designed by the legendary theatre architect Frank Matcham with his trademark proscenium arch and pillarless balconies. Since opening in 1906, it has continually attracted a huge range of top quality theatre productions from smash-hit musicals to top class drama and dance. Seating around 1470, the theatre has undergone three major refurbishments in its 100-year history, in the 1930s,1980s and most recently an £8m redevelopment in 2004/5, which successfully added a contemporary aspect to the historic Edwardian building, with new facilities such as the restaurant and cafe, giving Aberdeen a 21st century venue to be proud of.

Aberdeen Sinfonietta Opening Concert

Szymanowski Concert Overture Chopin Piano Concerto No.1 Tchaikovsky Symphony No.6 ‘Pathétique’ Angela Hewitt Piano Alexander Vedernikov Conductor As a former music director of Moscow’s Bolshoi Theatre, Alexander Vedernikov will bring a special level of emotional commitment to Tchaikovsky’s ‘Pathétique’ Symphony. Chopin’s First Concerto is an established favourite, though surely no soloist could bring more freshness and poetry to it than Angela Hewitt. Szymanowski’s early Concert Overture is a rarity – and a sumptuous homage to Richard Strauss.

Sally Beamish The Day Dawn Rachmaninov Second Piano Concerto César Franck Symphony in D minor Garry Walker Conductor Mikhail Kazakevich Piano The strings of the orchestra open this concert with The Day Dawn, which the outstanding contemporary composer Sally Beamish based on an old Shetland fiddle tune. The full orchestra then accompanies the brilliant Russian pianist Mikhail Kazakevich in a favourite Russian Romantic masterpiece, Rachmaninov’s Second Piano Concerto, before concluding the programme with César Franck’s wonderful symphony. This concert is part of sound, North East Scotland’s contemporary music festival.

Aly Bain & Phil Cunningham In 1988, two members from two of Scotland’s leading bands, The Boys of The Lough and Silly Wizard, came together to work on a television series. You could say “the rest is history”. Aly Bain and Phil Cunningham enjoyed performing together so much that they decided to have a small tour that year. 26 years on, they are filling not only small village halls, but all of our major performance venues. In these years their dedication to their music has earned them both the title of Dr and the honour of an MBE.

Oundjian conducts Shostakovich Friday 5 October

SOLD OUT Arguably the oldest touring boy band in the world, the Vienna Boys’ Choir was founded in the 15th century as part of the Chapel of Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian I. Now after a ten-year absence, they are touring the UK again. For their return to the UK, the Vienna Boys’ Choir has devised a very Viennese programme, with music from composers closely linked to the choir’s history, with music by contemporary composers and the Strauss family. Nothing reflects the Viennese mind and spirit quite like polkas and waltzes by Strauss; it is a dancing, whirling mix of melancholy and mawkishness with some black humour thrown in for good measure. The choir will also present songs by Billy Joel; Joel’s father moved to Vienna in the 1960s, and Billy Joel chose to write a song about Vienna as a metaphor for the rest of one’s life: Vienna waits for you.

10cc 40th Anniversary Tour

Position Vacant, Apply Within Master of camp Julian Clary is scouring the land in search of love. He’s promised to leave no straight unturned. “Because I’m still considered to be quite a catch and because your town is noted for its heterosexuals on the cusp, there’s bound to be stiff competition”, says Julian. “Therefore I’ll be hosting ruthless elimination games. You can be sure of one thing. By the end of the evening, we’ll all be celebrating my new partnership.” A glass of Blue Nun may be available to those who make an effort or anyone named Jason. But please bring your own confetti.

From their breakthrough debut single Donna in 1972 to their final No. 1 Dreadlock Holiday in 1978 via solid gold classics such as I’m Not In Love, Rubber Bullets, The Wall Street Shuffle, I’m Mandy Fly Me, Life Is A Minestrone, The Things We Do For Love, The Dean And I, Art For Art’s Sake, Silly Love and many more, 10cc combined progressive art-rock tendencies with an ear for melody to create songs of the ‘once heard, never forgotten’ variety.

In The Spirit of Duke Directed by Tommy Smith Edward Kennedy Ellington was a unique contributor to 20th century music. Composer, pianist, band leader – he reached out and touched a worldwide audience in a fashion that may never be equalled. His music was evocative and emotional, richly textured in mood, lyrical simplicity through to dense complexity. There were songs and suites, tone poems and the blues. The Ducal legacy is vast, covering six decades. However, The Scottish National Jazz Orchestra – an ensemble featuring Scotland’s leading jazz musicians – have chosen a variety of pieces spanning Ellington’s output with which to pay their respects. Happy Go Lucky Local, Sepia Panorama, Concerto For Cootie, Overture from the “Nut Cracker Suite”, Sunset & The Mocking Bird and Le Sucrier from “The Queen’s Suite”, Riding on a Blue Note, Mood Indigo, Harlem Air Shaft, Caravan, Rockin’ In Rhythm, Oclupaca from the “Latin American Suite”, Black & Tan Fantasy, Sophisticated Lady, Daybreak Express, Ko Ko, Main Stem, Never No Lament and the five movements from the “Per Gynt Suite” are Ellington as written – the interpretations by the SNJO redefine the timelessness of Ellingtonia.

Casablanca – The Gin Joint Cut written and directed by Morag Fullerton

Supported by Aberdeen Performing Arts If you go down to the woods tonight, you’re in for a big surprise! The course of true love never did run smooth: a strict father and his headstrong daughter; star-crossed lovers and quarrelling fairies; mischievous imps, supernatural spells and people in the wrong place at the wrong time. Expect the unexpected as you are drawn into an enchanted forest on the most magical night of the year - Midsummer’s night... This’ re-telling of Shakespeare’s fabulous fairy-tale will be an entertaining, inventive and delightfully confusing experience.

A lovingly disrespectful homage to one of the classic films of all time, where a ‘superb multi-tasking cast’ whisk you back to Morocco 1941 - a Nazi infested hotbed of corruption, teeming with refugees and all the flotsam and jetsam of war-torn Europe. Cut to Rick’s bar where the émigrés gather, desperate to get hold of the all-elusive exit visa, when who should walk in but the beautiful Ilsa, Rick’s long lost love. Casablanca has some of the most iconic scenes and best lines ever written, so why not play it again? But this time in a tiny gin joint, with three actors. Starring Jimmy Chisholm, Gavin Mitchell and Clare Waugh. Excerpts from Casablanca granted courtesy of Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc.

“…pure theatre magic…the secret of the show's success lies in its combination of anarchic stage send-up and real passion for the essence of one of the great screen love-stories…” **** THE SCOTSMAN

The Man Who Had All The Luck By Arthur Miller

Award winning musical comedy and stand-up from the “hilarious and brilliant” (Heat) Vikki Stone. As seen on This Morning (ITV1) MTV’s Flashprank and Britain in Bed (BBC3). Come join one of the Top 5 Edinburgh Acts (Observer) and the Top 10 to Watch (Independent) on her stunning debut national tour. "The audience were almost crying with laughter" Guardian "Bette Midler for the Adele generation" **** Sunday Herald "Terrific... A woman to watch!" **** Scotsman

Is it luck, fate or hard work that brings a man his happiness? The Man Who Had All the Luck follows the life of David Beeves, a mechanic in rural Midwest America in the 1930s, who is blessed with good fortune. In contrast, his family and friends face difficult times: his father desperately trying to raise his under-performing brother to success on the baseball pitch, while his friend Shory, confined to a wheelchair, becomes more resentful of his misfortune. The more success David achieves, the more guilty and paranoid he feels about those around him and he begins to wonder what will happen when his luck runs out.
