The Sound of Music

One of the greatest musicals of all time returns to the stage in a magnificent new production to enchant and enthral the young and the young at heart. Based on Baroness Maria von Trapp’s 1949 autobiography, this wonderfully lavish new staging of The Sound Of Music tells the true story of the world-famous singing family, from their romantic beginnings and search for happiness, to their thrilling escape to freedom as their beloved Austria becomes part of the Third Reich at the start of WWll. The Sound of Music features some of the world’s most memorable songs, including Edelweiss, My Favorite Things, DoRe-Mi, Climb Ev’ry Mountain, So Long, Farewell and of course, the title song, The Sound of Music. Lucy O’Byrne, fresh from her success on BBC One’s The Voice, plays the title role of Maria. She became the competition’s runner up earlier this year, impressing the nation and chart topper will.i.am with her stunning vocal range. Award winning actor and TV heart-throb Gray O’Brien plays the dashing Captain von Trapp. With a career that has spanned over two decades, he is best loved for starring in Peak Practice, Casualty and of course, Coronation Street.

Legally Blonde For our 25th anniversary, Phoenix Theatre is delighted to present the North-east Amateur Premiere of the award-winning musical comedy Legally Blonde. Perennially perky, Elle Woods is a girl who loves to be pampered and shop for the latest all-pink outfits (and matching handbags, of course). But don’t let this seemingly ditsy fashionista fool you, this sorority sister is smarter than she seems and doesn’t take “no” for an answer. So, when her boyfriend dumps her for someone “more serious”, Elle sets out to win him back by putting down the credit card and hitting the books. Ready to revamp her image, Elle goes where no Delta Nu sorority girl has gone before: Harvard Law School! With a fantastic score, the show moves at breakneck speed from the sorority house to the halls of justice, where the daredevil in high heels defends a workout-queen in a murder trial, defying the odds and proving that pink can save the day! Along the way, our heroine (who has the cutest sidekick in the world, her Chihuahua, Bruiser) proves that being yourself and going after what you want never goes out of style. From the awesome opening number, Omigod You Guys, to the fabulous finale, it’s sheer entertainment all the way! Wed - Sat 7.30pm, Sat 2.30pm

Jackie The Musical

Once there was a time with no mobiles, no online dating and no Facebook, when teenage girls waited with bated breath by the letterbox for their weekly issue of Jackie Magazine. In Jackie The Musical we revisit those heady days, and tell the story of a recent divorcée who seeks advice once more from the pages of her old Jackie annuals. The quizzes, the fashion tips, the ‘do’s and don’ts on first date’ and above all the Cathy and Claire problem pages are all eagerly devoured by our plucky heroine as she revisits the dizzy world of the teen bible. With her ex and a handsome new guy in tow, the valuable lessons she learnt as a girl begin to influence her future and Jackie discovers the one person in control of her life is... her. Starring Janet Dibley (The Two of Us, EastEnders, Fat Friends) Jackie The Musical is accompanied by a pulsating sound track of classic 70’s hits. Thrill once more to the unmistakable sounds of pop idols Donny Osmond, David Cassidy, Marc Bolan and many more. Written by Mike James and directed by Anna Linstrum, with original choreography by Arlene Phillips, this fun and feisty night out is a must see. Age guidance 12+ Tue - Sat 7.30pm, Sat 2.30pm

“Murder, greed, corruption, exploitation, adultery and treachery…all those things we hold near and dear to our hearts”…so begins the international award winning Broadway and West End musical, Chicago, which comes to His Majesty’s Theatre for one week only starring West End and Eastenders actor John Partridge (Cats, A Chorus Line, Miss Saigon, Starlight Express) as Billy Flynn and X Factor winner and real life prison warden Sam Bailey as Matron ‘Mama’ Morton!! Based on real life events back in the roaring 1920s, nightclub singer Roxie Hart shoots her lover and along with cell block rival, double-murderess Velma Kelly, they fight to keep from death row with the help of smooth talking lawyer, Billy Flynn. Created by the musical theatre talents of John Kander, Fred Ebb and legendary choreographer Bob Fosse, Chicago’s sexy, sassy score includes All That Jazz and Razzle Dazzle. With 6 Tony, 2 Olivier, 1 Grammy, 2 Bafta and 6 Academy Awards, Chicago truly is “The sharpest, slickest show on the block” The Times.

Alongside our usual Scratch Nights and Artist Exchanges, our New Voices: New Talent: New Theatre strand celebrates the closure of the Music Hall and provides you with the opportunity of getting involved. We look forward to hearing your story.

MUSIC HALL Throughout the winter, as we prepare to transform the Music Hall in Spring 2016 (see p4), we’re gathering stories and memories from those who have stood on its stage, sat in its dark warmth or worked behind the scenes over the decades to celebrate our national treasure. Some will weave their way into the last night’s performance before the transformation begins. Others might appear on our website, in print or become part of our story bank – a digital legacy to share with future generations.

WHAT’S YOUR STORY OR MEMORY OF THE MUSIC HALL? First date, best concert, magic moment? We’d love to hear your memories and share them with an audience. If your story is selected to be part of the last night in the Music Hall we’ll help you perform it yourself or we’ll perform it for you. TALK: Come to a drop-in date and tell us your story. It should take no more than 5 minutes to tell. WRITE: Email an outline of your story to yourstory@aberdeenperformingarts.com. It should be no more than 500 words. Stories must be true. Next winter discover the enchanted, sparkling world of Christopher Hampson’s Cinderella, in the European premiere of this most beloved fairy tale. Her wicked stepmother is intent on pushing aside kind and beautiful Cinderella in favour of her two nasty step sisters. The course of true love never did run smooth but Cinderella does meet her prince and romance blossoms. Acclaimed New Zealand designer Tracy Grant Lord’s luxurious costumes and extravagant sets create a glittering fantasy world peopled with characters that are touching, funny and real. Rambert

The Three Dancers plus other works Rambert presents a triple bill full of passion, drama, worldclass dancing and live music. Love, desire and betrayal are the ingredients of the shocking true story which inspired a Picasso masterpiece. Now Rambert springs the painting from the canvas to the stage, bringing to life the artist’s vivid Cubist imagery and the themes of ecstasy and doom which haunt his work. Choreographed by Didy Veldman, The 3 Dancers features music by leading Australian composer Elena Kats-Chernin. Two lovers meet by moonlight in Transfigured Night. Their confrontation is shown from different points of view, revealing their hopes, fears and secrets. Created by two-time Olivieraward winning choreographer Kim Brandstrup, it is a dramatic love story through virtuosic dancing to Schoenberg’s achingly beautiful score. The programme is completed by Frames, an inventive, visually arresting piece by dancemaker Alexander Whitley. 12 performers skilfully manipulate 70 interlocking metal bars, forming shapes, structures and spaces which, quite literally, frame their dancing in a different light.

Bach Masterworks - The Art of Fugue Canadian pianist, Angela Hewitt OC OBE, has become one of the foremost pianists of her age and regularly performs in recital and with orchestras across the globe. Following a ten year project to record all of the major keyboard works of J.S. Bach, she is now heralded as today’s leading exponent of that composer’s work, and has won a huge following. The catalogue was described by The Sunday Times as “one of the recorded glories of our age”, and she now brings two of its highlights to the stunning acoustic of the Music Hall. The Goldberg Variations and The Art of Fugue are two of the most significant works of one of the most important and influential composers of all time.

He makes his SCO debut with two powerful symphonies: Mozart’s compelling 25th, with its turbulent drama and restless rhythms, and the bracing energy of Beethoven’s Seventh, described by Wagner as ‘the apotheosis of the dance’. In between, highly regarded Swiss-born opera soprano Regula Mühlemann joins the Orchestra for a collection of vivid concert arias by Mozart, as well as Beethoven’s striking Ah, perfido!,

Ravel) Pictures from an Exhibition (c.35 mins) Boris Brovtsyn violin Alexander Vedernikov conductor Glinka and Mussorgsky made Russian music glitter with the colours of a Fabergé egg; a century later in the Soviet Union, Dmitri Shostakovich is said to have lamented a life turned grey. But there are few more gripping documents of that life than his First Violin Concerto; a brooding political thriller of a piece, with a core of raw emotion. The award-winning Moscow-born violinist Boris Brovtsyn grew up immersed in its world; as the former music director of the Bolshoi, meanwhile, Alexander Vedernikov, is perfectly placed to bring out all the drama, the spectacle, and the undercurrent of passion in both Glinka’s ballroom romance and Mussorgsky’s fantastic musical picture gallery.

Scottish Ensemble Quintets

Mozart String Quintet No. 4 in G minor, K516 Brahms String Quintet No. 2 in G major, Op.111 Martin Suckling Nocturne for Cello and Violin G minor has long been associated, in Mozart’s work, with agitation, anguish and desperation (look to his 40th Symphony or his first Piano Quartet for evidence). This quintet is no different, sinking as it does into an out-ofcharacter contemplative melancholy. With the addition of the extra viola adding that essential extra flesh, it’s easy to see why this and Mozart’s five other quintets are considered so spectacular, paving the way for the romantic model… …the model that was perfected and, arguably, transcended by Brahms, whose second quintet was intended as his last ever work. His Opus 111, he claimed, had said all he could as a composer and no more works should be expected. Glasgow-born composer Martin Suckling’s Nocturne is something different altogether: its feather-light, ethereal, lingering slides and tones will stay with you long after the performance ends. 7.30pm

Widmann Ikarische Klage Scottish Premiere Schumann Violin Concerto Brahms Symphony No 4 Robin Ticciati Conductor Alina Ibragimova Violin Brahms was an utterly romantic, secretive, self-critical and revolutionary composer, who inspired many including Schoenberg and Stravinsky. He was, however, fundamentally conservative, drawing inspiration from Bach and Beethoven. Symphony No 4 closes with a passacaglia modelled directly on Bach. The back-story of criticism and suppression of Schumann’s majestic Violin Concerto is at last fading in the face of genuine fascination. Russian-born Alina Ibragimova is a persuasive advocate of the work.

Borodin Overture to Prince Igor Szymanowski Violin Concerto No2 Interval Berlioz Symphonie fantastique There’s a reason why Nicola Benedetti is the nation’s favourite violinist. She brings an unmatched charisma to everything else she touches - and any chance to hear her immerse herself in the sensuous, shimmering sound-world of Karol Szymanowski is certain to be a treat. There’s only one way to follow that - so Peter Oundjian and the RSNO go for broke, in Berlioz’s fabulous, opium-fuelled blockbuster of a symphony. Witchcraft? Heartbreak? Guillotines? Hearing is believing: it’s simply... well, fantastic!

Hans Gál Mini Festival

Sunday 13 - Monday 14 March 2016 This is very different and special: a Mini-Festival of two concerts on consecutive days to celebrate the life and music of Hans Gál (1890-1987). It is likely that you may not know of this composer, a refugee from Nazi-occupied Austria who settled in Edinburgh, where he lived for the rest of his life, and taught in the Music Department of Edinburgh University. Although he composed prolifically throughout his long life, even into his 90s, his music was seen as too romantic and not “avant-garde” enough for the music establishment of the 50s ,60s and 70s. Thankfully, after the neglect his music suffered during his lifetime, there is now a much renewed interest in it.

Sunday 13 March 2016 3pm This concert will feature five musicians, all of whom have either recorded some of Hans Gál’s music, or who have his music in their repertoire and enjoy the opportunity to perform it. Pianist Leon McCauley, who recorded all of Gál’s piano music on a 3-CD set in 2005, will play some piano solos. Sarah Beth Briggs, also a pianist, will perform Gál’s oboe and piano sonata with oboist Fraser Kelman, the Five Songs for Mezzo-Soprano with Judy Brown, and the Suite for cello and piano with Mark Bailey, the cellist of the Edinburgh Quartet. Altogether this is quite a line-up! APA’s Associate Artist Programme 2015 The Associate Artist Programme is a new initiative for APA, inviting artists to work in residence at the Music Hall and The Lemon Tree. The programme seeks to unite local musicians/composers/creatives from different artforms with the aim of nurturing and developing Aberdeen’s creative scene; while also supporting the artists in developing their own practice and creating new work. This year we’ve invited contemporary folk musician and composer Aidan O’Rourke and vocal sculptor Jason Singh to work with us on investigating the idea of CONNECT.

Since June of this year Aidan and Jason have been working with different groups from across the area and with around 30 individual instrumentalists and vocalists, all from different musical genres, experience and age. They have been playing and composing together, improvising and having fun. The project is building towards a fantastic conclusion to coincide with the temporary closure of the Music Hall. CONNECT:ED – Thursday 31 March 2016, 7.30pm, MH This night will showcase the new work created by Aidan and Jason through the “Connect” project with artists from across the region. LIGHTS OOT HOOTENANNY, Saturday 2 April 2016, 9pm, MH Following the biggest and best ceilidh the Music Hall has seen, Aidan and Jason will provide the perfect dedication to the hall with the premiere of their new work “Hibernation” as the lights go out for the last time before the multi-million pound transformation.

GET INVOLVED If you are an instrumentalist or vocalist interested in working with Aidan or Jason, please get in touch. Or if you would just like to listen, let us know and we’ll invite you along to open sessions. Follow the sounds being created at apaconnect.wordpress.com.

Paul Heaton & Jacqui Abbott

An Evening with Lulu

Jason Donovan

By popular demand, star of stage and screen, Jason Donovan is returning to his roots for a solo tour of his debut 5x platinum, 1989 album Ten Good Reasons and Greatest Hits. Ten Good Reasons became the biggest selling album of 1989 and remains a massive fan favourite with two solo No.1 singles Too Many Broken Hearts and Sealed with a Kiss. It also featured a duet with Kylie Minogue, Especially for You, which reached No.1.

Described by one British national paper as “one of our finest songwriters”, Paul was a member of The Housemartins until they disbanded in 1988 when he became a member of The Beautiful South, who had great success with a series of hits inc. the number-one single A Little Time. Jacqui joined the line up in 1994 and among their most successful hits during her stint were Rotterdam, Perfect 10, Don’t Marry Her and Dream a Little Dream of Me. After The Beautiful South disbanded in 2007, Paul subsequently reunited with Jacqui in 2011 to perform in his musical The 8th, and they recorded their first album together What Have We Become? last year.

The work of Scott Bradlee & Postmodern Jukebox has been viewed on YouTube well over a hundred million times. Most of those doing the viewing, however, are not fully aware of the method to Bradlee’s madness. On the surface, the method is video – clips of full-band performances (that’s Bradlee on piano) shot in the bandleader’s living room with a single stationary camera. In fact, Bradlee’s method runs deeper. He’s educating his audience about 20thcentury song styles; he’s commenting on the elasticity of the pop form; he’s confounding cultural context; he’s uniting generations; he’s breaking the rules.
