Seal of the College The official crest and seal of Edgewood College is related to that of the Dominican Sisters of Sinsinawa who sponsor the College and bring to its program

the tradition of a progressive quest for truth, which

is characteristically Dominican. The background is formed by the black and white shield of the

Dominican Order. On the shield are three ancient

symbols. In the center is the Chi-Rho, a combination

of two Greek letters which stand for Christ. Above the Chi-Rho is the symbol of the Holy Spirit, giver of life and spirit of truth and love. Overlaid on the

Chi-Rho at its base is one of the three parallel lines which from early centuries have represented the active intellect of the human being, applicable especially to

the student and scholar. The motto of the College, Cor ad Cor Loquitur (Heart Speaks to Heart), is that of Cardinal Newman, taken from St. Francis de Sales. It

represents a reliance upon Christ for personal integrity and it describes the warm spirit and caring which mark relationships on campus.

Scott Flanagan, Ed.D.

Dr. Scott Flanagan became the seventh president of Edgewood College on August 1, 2014.

He has served Edgewood College since 1998, as Dean of Admissions and Financial

Aid, Vice President for Planning & Enrollment, interim Chief Financial Officer, and most recently as Executive Vice President. In addition, he has regularly taught a doctoral course in Higher Education Finance.

Dr. Flanagan previously served as Director of Admissions, Director of Athletics, and Assistant Vice President for Enrollment Services at the University of Saint Francis, in Ft. Wayne, Ind., where freshman classes tripled during his five years of leadership.

He has been a frequent presenter at national conferences on trends in higher

education, strategic planning, enrollment management, leadership, and change

management. He has also served as a consultant in the areas of enrollment management and strategic planning.

While a member of the Oregon, Wis. Board of Education, Dr. Flanagan was a key contributor to Accountability for Student Achievement, a policy paper which

received recognition from the National Association of School Boards. Flanagan currently serves on the board of the Urban League of Greater Madison, and

recently served as a member of the Commission on Financial Aid Consolidation and Modernization, created to improve financial aid in Wisconsin.

Flanagan holds a doctorate in Higher Education Management from the

University of Pennsylvania, where his dissertation, ‘Reconciling Values during

General Education Revision at Three Catholic Universities,’ was recognized with distinction. He earned an M.B.A. from the University of Saint Francis, and is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate from the University of Wisconsin-Madison with an

undergraduate degree in political science. He is married to Krista, a professional in event management. They have two children, Erin and Sean.

Dr. Flanagan is a native of Weyauwega, Wis., and is the son of Mike and Nancy, two retired Wisconsin public school teachers.

Academic Regalia Delegates at the Inauguration Ceremony serve as official representatives for their college or university. They march into the ceremony in the order of the founding of their institution (oldest first).

The academic robes come from a long tradition reaching back to the medieval era when their primary purpose was to keep one warm in the cold and drafty

stone halls. While some colleges and universities have distinctive robes and caps, particularly for graduate and doctoral recipients, most schools distinguish only

by the colors of the cords and hoods which are draped over the robes and by the colors of the tassels on the caps.

The color of the cords represent the individual’s field of study. Master’s and doctoral degree regalia includes hoods that represent the highest degree earned by an individual based on the hood’s size and shape.
