ACADEMIC programs
Environmental Studies The Environmental Studies program allows you to pursue a broad, interdisciplinary view of environmental issues. It prepares you for a career in education, research, advocacy, and a host of other possibilities. You’ll experience coursework in the natural sciences, humanities, and social sciences in combination with research and community involvement to gain the perspective and experience necessary to work toward a sustainable future.
Environmental Science With a concentration in either Biology or Chemistry/Geoscience, you will develop an understanding and life-long enthusiasm for scientific discovery through hands-on learning inside and outside the classroom. You will be prepared for a career to meet future local, national, and global needs. You may go on to become an ecologist, forester, environmental attorney or advocate, a biomedical engineer, bioethicist, or teacher.
Renewable Energy Certificate The Renewable Energy Certificate is a collaborative program with Madison College. If you are interested in the design, engineering, economic analysis, installation, maintenance and repair of various types of renewable energy systems, this program is for you. You earn 9 credits for the certificate, and they can also be counted toward a major in Physics or Chemistry.
Social Innovation & Sustainability Leadership Through the Accelerated Master’s Pathway, you will be able to take graduate courses as an undergraduate and complete your Master’s degree in only one additional year. A graduate degree in Social Innovation & Sustainability Leadership prepares you for rewarding work in a variety of fields in the non-profit, government, and corporate sectors. Demand is growing for people who understand sustainability and have the knowledge and skills necessary to develop sustainable solutions to current challenges.

LIBERAL ARTS CURRICULUM In addition to our environmentally-focused majors and minors, sustainability is also a key component of the liberal arts curriculum at Edgewood College. You will take an environmental course as part of your general education requirements. You will find many course offerings to pick from, including “Eco-fiction” and “Spirituality & the Environment.” As a student, you will also engage with our COR curriculum. It is designed to help you delve into the important questions of: “Who am I” and “Who could I become?” and “What is my role in building a just and compassionate world?” Many COR classes include environmental sustainability topics.
“ From a student perspective, the most important aspect of sustainability is student involvement. I feel like there are a lot of things done on campus that are sustainable. It’s great that they’re done, but getting students involved and having that opportunity for them to learn more about it is huge. When we do the plant starts in the spring, for kids to watch a seed turn into a plant, I think it’s really cool. Our partnerships promote open, honest, and respectful commitments to a shared purpose. Edgewood College offers a number of sustainable alternatives to driving and parking on campus.
• Shuttle Take the free remote-parking shuttle service from two locations and earn some exciting rewards, including movie tickets and bookstore dollars.
• Bus Passes Purchase a Madison Metro Bus Pass for only $10 per semester.
• Carpooling Collect great incentives for carpooling to campus or riding your bicycle.
FACILITIES
We are uniquely situated within the vibrant city of Madison but still surrounded by expansive native space. From our buildings to our natural surroundings, sustainability is at the core of the College’s infrastructure.
• The Boardwalk The boardwalk along Lake Wingra spans the length of campus. It includes multiple sitting and fishing areas. It parallels walking trails in the woods as well as a local bike path leading to the Henry Vilas Zoo.
• Heritage Trees The College has preserved the trees inherited through this land that predate the campus and European American settlement.
• Leed Certification The College has two Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certified buildings. Dominican Hall, the College’s largest residence hall, received certification by the U.S. Green Building Council in 2008. The Stream, the College’s visual and theatre arts center, was awarded LEED Gold certification in 2014.
• Billion Dollar Green Challenge In 2011, along with 30 other institutions including Harvard University and Stanford University, we became founding members of the Billion Dollar Green Challenge. We’ve committed a portion of the College’s endowment to a revolving green fund to help finance energy efficiency upgrades.
• Campus Sustainability Coordinating Team An active Campus Sustainability Coordinating Team, comprised of faculty, staff, and student representatives, works collaboratively to advance sustainability initiatives.
