How Can You Help Prevent a Sewer Line Backup?

• Do not pour grease or cooking oil down the drain. Instead scrape out or pour cooking oil and grease into a container or plastic bag and dispose of it in your kitchen garbage.

• Do not dispose of large absorbent items like paper towels, diapers, baby wipes or feminine products, down the toilet, these are not items that disintegrate like toilet paper will, including “flushable” wipes. These products should be disposed of in your garbage.

• Kitchen garburators increase the amount of organic material in the service lines.

Depending on the condition of the service line, organic material can stick to the lines and over time cause blockages. Compost your organic material instead.

To help prevent a sewer backup, be mindful of what goes down the drain. Your pipes are not built to handle most food items and will almost always cause a blockage in the short or long term. When in doubt, properly dispose of these items by throwing them away.

Lions Club Celebrates 40th Anniversary By Giving Back Cadderly Kingsbury, Martensville Messenger

To the Martensville Lions club, celebrating their 40th anniversary meant giving back to the community. They very graciously designed and built a gazebo in the Lion’s Park, providing shade for families during the summer.

“There was a little gazebo here, and it didn’t give off much shade. So when families came to play at the park or the spray park on hot days, the only shade was in the corner, under the tree.” Geoff Passy, Lions Club President, said. “So we thought we could help provide them with some environmental protection.”

The gazebo is 18 by 36 feet, with a two foot overhang, located in between the spray park and playground, giving families not only enough shade, but a good view of both areas. So far, the feedback has been nothing but positive.

“There haven’t been many sunny days, but I’ve gotten a lot of really good feedback.

People are saying that it’s great, and that it’s a great addition to the park,” added Passy.

The idea for the shelter began in January, when Maria Fowler pointed out how many people got sunburnt at the park. Chad Ward, whose father is Doug Ward, a member of the Lions Club, and his team began looking at designs and creating a budget.

“We went out to Hague to look at other structures. They had one that was perfect, exactly what we were looking for. We just had to modify it to suit our needs. We got that started thanks to Chad and his crew. They went out, got the prices for lumber and everything else, and did the labor for us.” Passy stated.

They began building the structure at the end of June, but due to bad weather, the process took longer than expected. “There’s not much left to do, just finishing the roof, staining, waterproofing and adding power,” said Fowler. “We’re going to close up the roof inside, so birds and such don’t get in and fly around in here and then the city will run power here next year, so we’ll have lights to make it usable in the evenings.”

The Lion’s would like to thank the community, and everyone involved in making this project possible. They hope that families and teams will make good use of the gazebo, and that it provides some shade and shelter from the elements. “In the end, our goal is to help improve our community any way that we can,” Passy and Fowler both stated in agreeance.

Lane and General Clean-up Program

Lane and General Clean-up has now been scheduled. This program is provided to help eliminate accumulated trash and debris in lanes, the City yard waste depot and contractor dumpsters. This program is intended for residential household waste only and not commercial or industrial waste. The schedule is as follows: Residents that live North of Main Street will have their items picked up the week of September 16th-20th. All items will need to be out by September 16th - 8:00 AM. Residents that live South of Main Street will have their items picked up the week of September 23rd-27th. All items will need to be out by September 23rd - 8:00 AM. It All Began With a School...

Most Saskatchewan towns began around an elevator and railway for grain handling; however, Martensville began around a school for the area children. In 1953, a local farmer, Dave Martens succeeded in getting permission from the Saskatchewan Government to move a used one-room school onto property donated by another local farmer – Jake Gerbrandt Sr. This property is presently the site of the Martensville Civic Centre.

The school was attractive to people wanting to move out of Saskatoon and they began to purchase property from Mr. Martens, north of present day Main Street and eventually, from Mr. Gerbrandt, who was south of Main Street. By 1961, the population scattered on Mr. Martens land was sufficient to form a hamlet. With steady increases, the population grew enough to be incorporated as a village in 1966, a town in 1969 and a city in 2009.

This location will be once again used as a classroom as Great Plains College begins to hold classes within the Martensville Civic Centre.

How It All Came Together to Become One of Canada’s Fastest Growing Communities

The first business in Martensville was the Avenue A Service Station. It was named this because it was situated on the old, graveled #12 highway which was an extension of Saskatoon’s Avenue A (Idylwyld Drive). This highway is now Centennial Drive and the service road south of the city. This business began around 1938 and the original building burned down in 1958. The present day Martensville Restaurant at the north end of Centennial Drive is situated in its replacement.

Mennonite churches were two of Martensville’s first buildings. In 1954, a building was moved onto Mr. Gerbrandt’s land to become the Bergthaler Mennonite Church. In 1959, a Saskatoon old North Park one room school was moved to the hamlet to become the Martensville Mennonite Mission Church.

Martensville was incorporated as a village in 1966. At this time, the population of Martensville had outgrown its hamlet status and applied to become a village. Harry (Henry) Baycroft was elected by the 784 residents as overseer (term for mayor at that time) of Martensville as it attained village status. He and Councillors Gordon Unrau and Peter Fehr served for the 3 years Martensville was a village 1966-1968.

Martensville had been unincorporated until this time with no restrictions regarding the types of housing allowed or where they were placed. Many substandard houses had been moved in from Saskatoon and neighboring communities. During the village years, bylaws and housing regulations were introduced and enforced and subdivisions were developed.

About 27 houses were removed and 47 building permits were issued while the village grew to a population of over 1000 with over half under the age of 18. What had been considered a distant suburb of Saskatoon now became a bedroom community. Some of the family names listed on a map of from this time period were Braun, Bartsch, Bueckert, Dyck, Enns, Ens, Fehr, Freisen, Geisbrecht, Ginther, Klassen, Letkeman, Martens, Penner, Peters, Wall and Wiebe.

Infrastructure took longer to arrive, except electricity which was here before there was any type of settlement. Gas was brought to the town in 1970 and sewer and water in 1976. Centennial Drive was the first street to be paved in 1975 and was originally done by the Department of Highways. The next street to be paved was 3rd Avenue South in 1980.

Becoming Saskatchewan’s 15th City in 2009

Hundreds of area residents came together on September 4, 2009, along with Premier Brad Wall, Municipal Affairs Minister Jeremy Harrison, MLA Nancy Heppner and Martensville Mayor Giles Saulnier to celebrate Martensville being declared a city.

The event included the signing of the paperwork; however, the city status was not official until November 3, 2009, coinciding with the first council meeting following the civic elections. That same year, Meadow Lake was declared a city, marking history as the first time that two cities were named in Saskatchewan since 1913. Martensville was brought in as the province’s 15th city.

During the event, Councilor Gordon Rutten took a moment to introduce a member of the audience, Mr. Corney Derksen, who was on the Martensville Town Council when the community was inaugurated as a town in 1969.

Upon changing into a city, there was a new logo and slogan created.

Martensville’s First Business and How It Helped Shape the Community We Live In Today Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

Judy Doell, Bryan Hiebert and Debbie Peters have many fond memories of growing up in Martensville during its early years. The three siblings were adopted by Peter and Katherine (Kay) Hiebert in 1960 and looking back, they are proud to have parents that played a big part in Martensville becoming the community it is today.

In 1938, Peter Hiebert purchased a business, located on the old graveled Highway 12, as well ABOVE: Judy Doell and Bryan Hiebert with a photo of the business their as adjacent land from Dave Martens. From there, parents ran from 1938-1975 in Martensville.

Hiebert began running the Avenue A Service Station, which was located where the Martensville Restaurant currently sits on Centennial Drive North. “We think he chose this location because of its close vicinity to the highway and he saw it as a good business opportunity,” Bryan stated. “We believe that our parents were some of the first entrepreneurs in Martensville and they provided service to the area from 1938 to 1975. Dad was 75 years old when he retired and worked right up until then,” Judy added.

Having ran the business for numerous years already, after Peter married Katherine Unger in 1946, the two worked together to create a business that provided a wide range of services to the area and became a regular stop-in location for the local families. Peter wanted to build his new wife a home, so he constructed their first home together with the wood from grain bins.

This house was later sold and moved into another location in Martensville.

Not only did the Martensville Shop-Rite, formerly known as the Avenue A Service Station, provide groceries, they also provided gas, candy, ice cream, a restaurant with a take-out option, vehicle repairs and maintenance, vehicle towing, hardware, a coffee shop and more. On top of everything, they were also the first post office in Martensville. “The business was a place that everyone came. It was very important to mom and dad that the local families didn’t go hungry, so they had an honor system where families in the surrounding area could buy groceries on credit. This allowed them to still purchase groceries and put money down as they were able to,” explained Judy. At the time, Martensville was a poor community, and families couldn’t afford to pay immediately which is what they would have to do if they travelled to Saskatoon. Peter also took much pride in pricing his groceries at a comparable, if not lower rate than that of Saskatoon businesses. “He always said that he could make more money by selling a little bit less than everyone else because he would sell more and in the long run, he would be making more money.

We even had people from Saskatoon coming here to shop,” Bryan stated.

The original store burned to the ground in 1958 and Peter didn’t have the funds to rebuild at the time.

Being a provider of ESSO gas, the corporation saw the potential for the business and provided Peter with a loan for $5000 to rebuild. “That was a lot of money back then, but they saw that it was very polyplus.ca important for the business to be there,” Judy explained.

As teenagers, the three Martensville! children helped their parents out with the operation of the business, along with many employees and one other long-standing employee – Margorie Bendel.

“It was a very busy place. We had many customers that would come in daily to get the items they needed, and others that would just come in to sit and chat and have coffee with dad. The atmosphere of the business was an open-door, enjoyable, family-feel for many customers coming in,” Judy noted.

Initially, the store was open Monday-Saturday, and Peter would be there for 7am every day, and close at 11pm each night. Eventually, despite some backlash from the Mennonite community, the business began to open on Sundays as well.

Both Peter and Kay took great pride in their community and were ABOVE: Peter and Kay Hiebert involved in a number of groups and local initiatives. Both were involved with the student council, town office, Martensville naming committee, helped bring in the Mennonite Mission Church, and provided funding and volunteering towards the construction of the first indoor rink for the area, which was built in Warman at the time. Peter was involved in the Warman Curling Club and Kay was involved in many local Girls’ Clubs and as an avid seamstress, taught many of the local women how to sew. In addition, Kay was also a boisterous advocate for Martensville by responding to newspaper articles and was on the radio at one time as a voice for the community.

After adopting their three children in 1960, Peter and Kay took a small hiatus to spend time as a new family and rented their store to Pete and Herman Siemens until 1965. The family moved to Saskatoon until 1965, when they returned to Martensville and remained until 1975 when they retired. From 1969-1975 Abe and Leona Friesen rented the garage from Peter and Kay and ran Friesen’s Esso Service. “The timing of them retiring worked out perfectly. The 1960’s were the heydays for the store and once the new doublelane highway 11 was built by Warman, much of the traffic was diverted that way. Shortly after they retired, another grocery store came to Martensville, so it worked out well for them timing wise,” said Bryan.

Without the contributions of Peter and Kay, Martensville might be a very different place today. Many local families benefited from the kindness that the two entrepreneurs provided and Judy, Debbie and Bryan are happy to be able to share these stories as a way to keep their parents memories alive. Peter passed away in 2000 and Kay in 2002.

Labour Day Weekend is over and there were definitely some classics in the CFL. The weekend started on Sunday with the Blue Bombers and Roughriders battling for prairie supremacy. With Winnipeg not having starting QB Matt Nichols due to injury and Andrew Harris serving a suspension it wasn’t predicted to be a close game but it seems that Labour Day between these two never disappoints. The Riders jumped out to a 10-0 lead after the first quarter but the Bombers clawed back to make it 16-10 for Saskatchewan at the half. Winnipeg managed to take the lead with three minutes left in the game on a 1-yard touchdown run from Chris Streveler. The Riders had one last shot on the last play of the game and Brett Lauther connected on a 26 yard field goal before sprinting off the field in typical walk-off fashion. Saskatchewan now sits just two points behind the Bombers for first in the West headed into the Banjo Bowl.

Game two of the long weekend was between the first in the East Hamilton TigerCats and the last in the East Toronto Argonauts but despite the standings it was a lot closer than most expected. The Argos started strong and had a 24-11 lead at halftime before TiCats QB Dane Evans found a rhythm and lead Hamilton to a 38-27 victory. Evans finished with 442 yards and 2 touchdowns while completing 31 of 37 pass attempts.

In the final game of the Labour Day Weekend the battle of Alberta started out slower than normal and looked to be a close game. The Stamps scored a late TD with a 2-point convert to make it 15-6 at halftime. But after that it was all Calgary as Edmonton managed just a field goal in the final two quarters. Calgary would go on to win 25-9 with Bo Levi Mitchell returning to the line-up and throwing for 263 yards and one touchdown.

My picks were looking good until Toronto folded in the second half and I finished 2-1 this weekend bringing my record to 31-15 on the year. My picks for week 13 are Montreal, Calgary, Toronto, and Saskatchewan.

Modern Day Politics Means More Scrutiny Needed

Maybe it would be productive to remember that politics was always this way. Maybe it just wasn’t quite as easy to see. In the days before everyone got to see and hear everything on social media, maybe it wasn’t in our face the way it is right now because it now is, it seems that much easier to have whatever view we may have to be easily reinforced.

But because of all of this, we have all that much more reason during this upcoming federal election campaign to not only listen what our politicians have to say but also make serious and independent assessments of those policies.

Maybe we should remember that this was always our duty. The thought crosses one’s mind after the recent pronouncement from Environment Minister Catherine McKenna that hinted a re-elected federal Liberal government would sit down with the provinces and review the carbon tax levy that was to be capped at $50 a tonne in 2022.

We need to assess this. First, McKenna’s latest assessment does seem to be very different than what McKenna was saying last June when she said that it would be capped at $50 a tonne - a levy that translates into about 11 cents a litre at the gas pumps.

McKenna’s comments came in response to the Parliamentary Budget Office report suggesting the carbon levy would have an increase to $102 a tonne if the federal tax is the only measure used to meet world targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions for 2030.

Critical to voting decisions is clarity from our political leaders and trust that they will keep their word.

That McKenna and the Liberals are now saying something very different only two months after making their June commitment says much and, as has always happened in politics, opposition politics are having a hay day with the notion that the Liberals have a hidden agenda to raise the tax at will, should they be re-elected.

Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe, who has vehemently opposed the carbon tax, making it the issue in politics in this province, has eagerly joined in and if you have paid any interest to social media, you have likely heard any number of Conservative politicians and their supporters bemoan this.

Again, this is how politics has always been played.

However, in this day and age when we can so easily choose to hear and see only what we want to hear and see, maybe it’s especially important to take a broader look.

There are many reasons to oppose the federal carbon tax. One of the best ones is that there isn’t much to suggest it’s achieving its desired goal. If Ottawa is now charging an extra four cents on gas and giving families back $600 a year in tax credits, what is the incentive change?

Let’s take a realistic look at how that four cents a litre, or even 11 cents a litre in three years, is. Is it truly bankrupting business or slowing the economy.

While the provincial government now claims it’s killing jobs, (1,400 in the oil sector, alone) it seldom bothers to mention over supply causing low prices of around $50 US a barrel WTI are a far bigger factor. In short, the boom and bust of oil is seeing a bit of another bust.

Meanwhile, Saskatchewan is monthly boasting of sizeable increases in provincial employment - 12,000 new jobs a month compared with the same time last year.

Looking at it objectively, the economy isn’t suffering as much as claimed and then there is the messy question: If this isn’t solution to manmade global warming, what is?

As this election approaches, it would be helpful for voters to independently weigh all such matters.

Back-to-school means more screen time with friends

New Royal University Hospital Adult Emergency Department In Saskatchewan

Saskatchewan residents will soon have access to a brand new emergency department. The Government of Saskatchewan, Saskatchewan Health Authority and Royal University Hospital Foundation celebrated the grand opening of the new Royal University Hospital (RUH) adult emergency department (ED).

“This new emergency department will improve patient safety and privacy, accommodate more people and improve access for trauma and EMS personnel,” Health Minister Jim Reiter said. “I am proud of our government’s investment in this project that will better meet the growing healthcare needs of Saskatoon residents.”

The RUH adult ED includes; private exam rooms, enhanced trauma rooms, minor assessment and treatment spaces, and specially equipped mental health rooms.

Access to Emergency Medical Services will be improved by a large ambulance bay, and direct access to the STARS helipad through a dedicated trauma elevator. The new ED will open later this fall.

Anyone needing emergency services will go to a new entrance just past the current ED, where they will be triaged and directed to the appropriate care.

The RUH Foundation contributed $5 million for furnishings, new technology and advanced equipment and fixtures. “We are extremely humbled by the confidence bestowed on the Foundation and Royal University Hospital and thank the donors from across Saskatchewan who have given so generously,” Arla Gustafson, CEO of RUH Foundation said. “Donor support has and will continue to make a difference and help save lives every day in our new Adult Royal University Hospital Emergency Department.”

“Today, we celebrate the work done to ensure residents and families are first and foremost in decisions made regarding their care,” Saskatchewan Health Authority CEO Scott Livingstone said. “Collaboration with partners such as the Government of Saskatchewan and the Royal University Hospital Foundation, with the unwavering support of their donors, is key to important initiatives such as the new RUH Adult ED. A sincere thank you to the many dedicated staff who have worked so hard over the years to make this space a reality; they are the backbone of health care in our province.”

The Government of Saskatchewan has provided $257.6 million for the Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital, including the Royal University Hospital adult emergency department.

SPORTS Grzybowski Brings Home Gold in International Competition Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

Rashenna Grzybowski travelled to Costa Rica to compete in her first international powerlifting competition in early August and the confidence that she had going into the competition paid off as she came home with a gold medal.

Representing Canada in the North American Powerlifting Championships, Grzybowski completed three out of three lifts and had a total of 375lbs in squat, benched 199lbs and accomplished 407lbs in deadlift. Up against six other women, in the end Grzybowski had a gap of 25.5kg between her and the next closest competitor, which earned her the gold medal win. “I have another competition coming up in three weeks, so I only did as much as I needed to win in Costa Rica so I can save it for my Beaudry Cres next competition,” Grzybowski explained.

“Being my first international competition, the win is pretty amazing and I feel quite proud, but there is always room to do better, so I will keep pushing myself so I am ready for the higher levels of competition.”

The next competition Grzybowski will be competing in is the Commonwealth Powerlifting Championships in St. John’s, NL which will take place September 15-21. After competing in the Canadian National Powerlifting Competition, Grzybowski applied to compete in both Costa Rica and St. John’s; SASKATCHEWAN however, Grzybowski noted that the Commonwealth Championships is more of a prestigious event. “The people competing in St. John’s are the same ones that will be going to the World Championships, which is what I want to hopefully get into next year.” The only competition bigger than the Commonwealth one is World’s, so Grzybowski says she will be working hard to accomplish that goal in the future.

Heading into the Commonwealth Championships, Grzybowski has a goal in mind of achieving 402lbs in squat, 215lbs in bench and 460lbs in deadlift. “I feel confident that I can do those numbers. I will never know until the day of, but I feel like I am more than capable of accomplishing my goal.”

On Saturday, August 24th, Forged Fitness hosted a BBQ Fundraiser in their parking lot to help raise funds to send Grzybowski to St. John’s. All of the competitions for powerlifting are completely selffunded, so Grzybowski explained that any financial aid makes a huge difference. Those attending the fundraiser had a chance to take part in a raffle, 50/50 draw, dunk tank, bouncy houses, food and drink options and more.

In the end, a total of approximately $800 was raised.

“I appreciate the support from everyone that came out and just want to say thank you to Russ, Lorraine and Christopher from Forged Fitness because I would not have gotten where I am without them.”
