Martensville Curling Club Attracts World Class Events Thanks to SaskTel Curling Stadium

In a three-year agreement, SaskTel has become title sponsor of SaskTel Curling Stadium at Martensville.

SaskTel Curling Stadium is a broadcast service that has high-definition (HD) cameras on every sheet, set up to bring full coverage from curling events played in the venue.

Streams are available through CurlingZone's YouTube channel. SaskTel Curling Stadium by CurlingZone, debuted in Martensville, 15 kilometres north of Saskatoon. The facility is fully outfitted with broadcast capabilities on four sheets.

Martensville is well-positioned as the closest curling facility to the Saskatoon airport, making it possible to attract worldclass events and teams to the region.

Epping and Weagle, as the top finishing Canadian finishers, earned a berth into the Canadian Olympic Mixed Doubles Trials.

SaskTel Curling Stadium at Martensville will host several competitive events throughout the season with 12 weekends set aside for broadcast.

SJHL Partners with SaskTel To Broadcast The 2021 Warman SJHL Player Showcase Martensville Messenger

The Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) is tuned in with SaskTel for the upcoming SJHL Showcase in Warman.

The event, which runs October 4th through October 6th at the Legends Centre in Warman, will be available live on SaskTel maxTV and maxTV Stream channels 49 and 349.

With 200 scouts expected in attendance, these players are able to showcase their talents in front of NHL, CIS and NCAA scouts from across North America.

“It’s events like this that allow scouts the ability to see players at the beginning of the year and watch them develop throughout the season” says Bill Chow, SJHL President. “Having a showcase where a scout can fly in and watch all 12 teams play aides in getting our players recognized and potentially furthering their career with respect to hockey and education”

Martensville Celebrates Weather Cooperates for Annual Regional Race Culture Days Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

Culture Days, which is a national celebration of arts and culture is coming to Martensville once again and will offer an array of activities for all ages to take part in. This year, the City of Martensville will be offering four main events throughout the month of October, which will include wood carving/soap carving on October 2nd, Salsa dancing on October 2nd, Pierogi making workshop on October 7th and to wrap up Culture Days, Wanuskewin will be coming on October 24th with traditional programming and games, as well as a dancer that will do a live performance.

“Culture Days is all about sharing and connecting with others and being able to learn from one another. With our diverse community, not only in Martensville but all over Canada, Culture Days helps facilitate understanding and acceptance,” Jamie McCulloch, City of Martensville Recreation Coordinator II, said.

Although Culture Days has been a national celebration for many years, the City of Martensville didn’t begin offering events and activities until approximately five years ago.

“We try and create new experiences each year that get people out, learning and interacting with their neighbors and community,” McCulloch added.

All programs provided through Culture Days are free to participate in; however, they do require people to register beforehand, which can be done online at www.martensville.ca, or by calling the Martensville Athletic Pavilion (MAP).

For the City of Martensville, they feel it is important of provide multiple programming options for various ages. “Everyone has different interests and the more variety we can offer, the more likely it is we can reach a broader audience and get people involved in Culture Days. Come out, learn some new skills, dances, and make some delicious food! It is a month-long celebration, and we cannot wait for it to start.”

Orange Shirt Day Created to Honour Survivors of Residential Schools

The Annual Regional Race put on by the City of Martensville and the City of Warman was held on Saturday, September 25th with 100 people registered for the event, and 70 in attendance.

Since 2017, the two cities have come together to help bring awareness to the diverse communities of Warman and Martensville, as well as encourage people to get active and promote the two communities. To get more people involved this year, they offered both a 5km and 10km race option along with the option of riding bikes.

alternate between the communities. This year the race started in Martensville at the North Ridge Community Centre and ended in Warman at Oasis Park.

To help get people prepared for the event, and to gear them up to learn how to start running or help with nervousness about joining a race, the City of Martensville created a Running Club as well which started in September.

Orange Shirt Day is taking place across the country on Wednesday, September 29th. This day was created to help commemorate the residential school experience, to honour and respect the healing journey of the survivors of residential schools and their families, as well as commit to the ongoing process of reconciliation.

The idea behind Orange Shirt Day stemmed from a story shared by Phyllis Webstad, who, at six years old was attending her first day of school in 1973 and was very proud to be wearing a shiny orange shirt. That shirt was taken from her the moment she walked through the residential school doors. Webstad shared her story in hopes that no child ever feels that shame or pain that she did on her first day of school.

September 30 was chosen as the date for Orange Shirt Day, as that was the time of year that many Indigenous children were removed from their homes, their families and their communities to be forced into residential schools, which were government-funded, church-run schools set in place to remove parental involvement in the intellectual, cultural and spiritual development of Indigenous children. Sadly, there were countless children that never made it back home to their families as thousands died while attending these schools, which resonates through the Orange Shirt Day slogan, ‘Every Child Matters’.

The Royal Saskatchewan Museum will be hosting an online presentation about residential schools on September 30th, and Tim Poitras, a member of the Muscowpetung First Nation and residential school survivor, will be sharing his own personal experience.

In addition, Brad Bellegarde, a musician, youth mentor and member of the Little Black Bear First Nation, will be sharing his parents residential school experiences. This event will be free to view and can be registered for by emailing education@royalsaskmuseum. ca, or by visiting the Royal Saskatchewan Museum website.

This Thursday, September 30 will mark the first National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. Schools throughout the community will be closed for this day and the City of Martensville has acknowledged this day as a statutory holiday to acknowledge and commemorate the legacy of colonization and residential schools. All federally run businesses, such as Canada Post, banks, etc. will be closed for this day.

“The Regional Race was a great success, and we are excited for next year’s race! This year we used the Regional Race as a fundraising event for KidSport and because of the generosity of our racers and participants, we were able to raise over $2200 for KidSport which was amazing! This will go a long way in getting more kids and families in programs and sport in Martensville, Warman, and the surrounding area,” said McCulloch.

Report of B&E Leads to Arrest

On the evening of September 26, Corman Park Police Service and Saskatoon RCMP responded to a call regarding a break and enter that was in progress south of Grasswood. Upon arriving, members found a residence had been broken into with items stolen, as well as two additional homes that had been broken into.

Members began ABOVE: Weapons seized canvassing the area searching from suspect in break and enters for suspects and thanks to a local homeowner, a lone suspect was spotted fleeing on foot in a field south of Baker Road.

Members apprehended the suspect and weapons, along with stolen property and break & enter tools were found. The suspect was transported to the Saskatoon RCMP detachment and lodged in cells.

Saskatoon Police Warn of Scam

Police Arrest Impaired Driver Near Martensville

On the afternoon of September 24, police received a 911 RID (Report Impaired Drivers) call south bound on Highway12 near Martensville.

Corman Park Police Service and Martensville RCMP members intercepted the vehicle at Lutheran Road and conducted a traffic stop that lead to the driver being arrested for impaired driving.

A subsequent search of the vehicle lead to the seizure of a firearm, and the alcohol in the vehicle was dumped roadside. The passenger of the vehicle was lodged in cells for public intoxication after becoming confrontational with members on scene. The driver of the vehicle was transported to the Martensville RCMP Detachment for processing and has been released with a future court date.

The Saskatoon Police are warning the public about a phone scam that has recently resurfaced.

The SPS has received complaints that a person has called and stated that a member of their family is in trouble with Police and is in need of financial assistance to make bail, pay a ticket, etc. The victim is then directed on how to send money, by this person posing as an officer or a lawyer.

The SPS does not contact people in this manner.

If you are faced with a phone call of this nature, we would encourage you to use extreme caution, especially when being asked to send emergency money. Ask important questions of the caller to try to verify their identity. Ask for a phone number to call the "relative" back once you have checked with other relatives. If you suspect fraud, contact the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-4958501 or the Saskatoon Police Service.

SGI partners with MADD on multiple initiatives including; MADD Mobile, MADD Smashed Car campaigns, MADD Canada SmartWheels RV, The Van de Vorst Family Award, Positive Ticketing and School Program.

Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) recently awarded Corman Park Police Services (CPPS) as MADD Canada’s 2021 Robert M. Soloman Award for Excellence in Public Policy. CPPS had been nominated earlier in the year in recognition for their significant contributions to help rid the roads of impaired drivers.

2021 Has Changed Little

It is difficult to argue with Premier Scott Moe on one point; this federal election did prove to be rather pointless, if you simply consider elections as a measure of the public desire for change. Or at least, this appears what the final results (such as they, with slow counting due to COVID-19 and mail-in ballots) seem to suggest.

The Liberals finished the night with 158 seats or 32.2 per cent of the popular vote (the lowest ever by a governing party) — almost identical to their 2019 total of 157 seats and 33.1 per cent. Similarly, the Conservative Party of Canada (CPC) totals of 119 seats and 34 per cent were remarkably similar to its 2019 numbers of 121 seats and 34.3 per cent, popular vote. And so it goes down the line: the Bloc Quebecois, 34 seats and 7.8 per cent compared with 32 seats 7.8 per cent in 2019; the NDP, 25 seats and 17.7 per cent this year compared with 24 seats and 16 per cent in 2019; the Green Party, two seats 2.3 per cent compared with three seats and 6.6 popular vote in 2019 and; even the People's Party of Canada (PPC) was again shutout of seats, although it did increase its popularity to 5.1 per cent, nationally, from 1.6 per cent in 2019.

For the less-than-bargain basement cost of $610 million for Elections Canada to run the 2021 federal campaign -$108 million more than in 2019 because of COVID-19 protocols - we got pretty much what we had.

Certainly, it appears we got exactly what we had here in Saskatchewan with all 14 seats remaining in the hands of the Conservatives.

While pre-election hype suggested there would be close races in Desnethe-Missinippi-Churchill River with former long-serving NDP MLA Buckley Belanger carrying the banner for the Liberals, and in Regina Lewvan, and Saskatoon West with the NDP making a push, none of that came to fruition. (Saskatoon West turned was closer, but it appears as of today that even the mail-in ballots won’t make that much of difference.)

Nor did the much-vaunted PPC surge make all that much difference. The roughly five-per-cent loss of vote for the Conservatives in Saskatchewan was roughly equal to the PPCs’ gains here, but it wasn’t enough to make a difference in what Moe called the most “pointless election in Canadian history.”

Sadly, one thing that certainly didn’t change much is the politicking. There surely seems to be evidence that voters very much thought Prime Minister Justin Trudeau should have been dealing with other matters like the pandemic instead of campaigning for a majority.

(Remember: This election was Trudeau’s choice - one caused by a non-confidence vote in the House of Commons.)

There is also something truly odd about Moe’s contention now that Trudeau should have instead spent the campaign “properly funding Canada’s chronically underfunded health system, working with provinces to increase vaccination rates in some of our hardest-to-reach communities."

During the campaign, Moe wouldn’t even respond to Trudeau’s concerns about COVID-19 cases skyrocketing in Alberta and Saskatchewan. So if Moe had serious concerns about Ottawa not doing its part to help Saskatchewan with its hardest-to-reach Saskatchewan communities, why didn’t he say so during the election?

Elections are the precise time to talk about such matters. Moe was very vocal about the carbon tax and other matters in the 2019 campaign. Why would he be silent in 2021 campaign during a pandemic?

Exactly what help did he want from Ottawa?

Isn’t vaccine distribution a provincial responsibility?

Didn’t Moe’s Health Minister Paul Merriman say during the campaign that the Saskatchewan Party government wouldn’t be implementing added measures to encourage people unwilling to be vaccinated to get the shot?

It seems a lot of politicians have missed the election-night message from Canadian voters that they are tired of politicking.

Proof Of Vaccination Or Negative Tests Required Broadly October 1, 2021

Effective Friday, October 1, 2021, proof of COVID-19 vaccination or a negative test result will be required in Saskatchewan for public access to a range of businesses, event venues, as well as for all Government of Saskatchewan ministry, crown and agency employees.

Occupational Health and Safety Regulations - Regulations under The Public Employers' Covid-19 Emergency Regulations come into force on October 1 where public employers will require their employees to make a choice to show proof of being fully vaccinated for COVID-19 or provide evidence of a negative COVID-19 test result at least every seven days. A negative test result is also required for partially vaccinated individuals.

Employers outside the public service can voluntarily opt in should they wish to implement a proof of vaccination or negative test policy for employees. The cost for all proof of negative test results for asymptomatic testing will be the responsibility of the individual. Proof of vaccination for all Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) employees will also begin implementation on October 1, with a phased approach. The need for this policy is a result of the significant risks mounting from the highly transmissible COVID-19 variant and a necessary step to protect health care teams, patients and residents and to preserve health care services. More details will be provided later this week by the SHA to all health care staff, contractors and others affected by this policy. Health care workers who do not provide proof of vaccination will be required to participate in a monitored testing program at their cost, unless they have received an approved accommodation based on the Saskatchewan Human Rights Code.

A note of caution that some individuals are obtaining affidavits indicating they are exempt from vaccination. Vaccinations are not mandatory in Saskatchewan and individuals may refuse to be vaccinated, therefore legal affidavits are not required and will not provide an exemption.

If a proof of vaccination is not provided, proof of a negative COVID 19 test must be presented to access a designated business. The only acceptable forms of proof of vaccination are: • Wallet cards received at time of immunization • A printed copy of your MySaskHealthRecord (MSHR) vaccine certificate (with or without a QR code)

• A screenshot of your MSHR vaccine certificate (with or without a QR code) saved to your device • An earlier version of your MSHR COVID-19 vaccine certificate • A COVID-19 vaccine printout from Saskatchewan Health Authority Public Health • To come - A QR code/MySaskHealthRecord vaccine certificate uploaded to SK Vax Wallet

The QR Codes in vaccine records from MSHR were temporarily removed on Friday September 24 because of potential privacy concerns. The issue has been resolved and QR codes are again available in MSHR. Any QR codes that were saved/printed or captured prior to Tuesday should be deleted or destroyed as they have been made invalid and new QR codes must be retrieved from your MSHR account.

Businesses requiring proof of vaccination will also require ID from anyone 18 and older. Youth aged 12-17 will also need to show ID unless accompanied by an adult with proof of vaccination and ID. Youth aged 12 to 17, visiting a business without an adult, who do not have photo identification will be allowed to present other forms of government issued identification such as birth certificate or health services card.

Proof of a Negative Test - Individuals who do not have proof of vaccination have the option of providing proof of a negative COVID-19 test result from within the previous 72 hours.

Effective immediately the SHA will not be providing testing for asymptomatic individuals, giving priority to those presenting with symptoms, unless identified as a close contact, have had a positive rapid antigen test, identified as part of an outbreak situation or requiring transfer or admission to longterm care, primary care, social services or intensive care units.

A self-administered take-home rapid antigen test will not be accepted as valid proof of negative COVID-19 test results. Individuals requiring a negative test result have several private options on the market that will provide a rapid antigen test or a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test for a fee.

MLA Terry Jenson’s Report from the Legislature Proof of Vaccination Requirements Introduced to Ease Pressure on Health Care System

Across Saskatchewan we have seen the rates of positive COVID-19 cases increase, in particular among the unvaccinated population. This is causing a ripple effect throughout our healthcare system, resulting in the postponement of elective surgeries and the redeployment of healthcare providers to areas of greatest demand. The commitment of our healthcare providers deserves our gratitude; please get vaccinated.

A province-wide mandatory mask order was announced for all indoor public spaces to help slow the spread of this virus. This health order is targeted to be lifted in late October after the proof of vaccination or negative test protocol has been implemented for several weeks.

Effective October 1, a proof of vaccination or negative test requirement will be implemented for all provincial and crown employees. Also, effective October 1, a proof of vaccination or negative test requirement will be applied to public access establishments, businesses and event venues that bring groups of people together. Residents are no longer required to obtain a PIN from eHealth Sask when setting up their MySaskHealthRecord account. Saskatchewan residents with a MySaskHealthRecord account can also view their COVID-19 vaccination record in a new format that includes a QR (Quick

Response) code. It can be downloaded/saved, printed, and viewed on mobile devices. The new format also notes the individual’s name, type of vaccine administered, date, country of issuance and lot number.

The new certificate with a digital QR code supports proof of vaccination at border entry if travelling internationally. It is aligned with work the federal government is undertaking on a national solution.

Our government is also working on expanding access to rapid-antigen tests for home-based self-administered screening. Residents will be able to obtain rapid-antigen tests for use as a selfadministered screening tool from several Saskatchewan Health Authority locations and partner agencies. These locations will be published in the coming days when rapidantigen tests are delivered.

While the more robust health measures are in place to help curb the transmission of COVID-19 and protect our health system, I encourage anyone eligible for vaccination in Saskatchewan to get their vaccines and get their COVID-19 vaccine certificate from MySaskHealthRecord.

Prairie Women on Snowmobiles Dissolves After 20 Years Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

Prairie Women on Snowmobiles (PWOS) have made a huge impact upon so many people throughout the province since being created in 2000.

The mission of this organization was to bring attention to Breast Cancer and the recreation of snowmobiling, and through this, also help raise funds that went towards breast cancer research, awareness and equipment.

The idea for this February 2020 incredible group began when two friends, Carol Tulik and Jeannie Brewer, a breast cancer survivor, organized the first event in 2000. Since then, each year a group of women would come together, along with volunteers to make up the support crew and pit crew, to travel approximately 1400 kilometres in six days across Saskatchewan with all proceeds from their journey going to the Canadian Cancer Society for Breast Cancer Research and the Cancer Foundation of Saskatchewan for equipment for treatment.

At the 2021 AGM for PWOS, the group made the difficult decision to dissolve the organization due to it becoming more difficult to fill the core rider positions, as well as positions within the executive.

Throughout the years, PWOS raised $2,532,968.31 for the Canadian Cancer Society (CCS) and $436,000.00 for the Cancer Foundation of Saskatchewan (CFOS).

The group also visited 198 communities, had 164 women ride and 37 pit crew members, with 25 women sitting on the executive. Additionally, there have been hundreds of corporate sponsors, thousands of volunteers and countless individuals that have donated prizes, funds and time to this incredible cause.

Familiar Face Retires From Serving Community For 19 Years Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

Judy Morris is a familiar name around the community and is known for a wide array of reasons; however, one of her most prominent roles in Martensville was through the Valley West Justice Committee (VWJC).

Morris, who is a founding member of the VWJC has been involved with this organization for the past 19 years, spending ABOVE: Judy Morris many of those years as Chair, in addition to being a liaison with police, the court, Saskatoon Community Mediation Services and Saskatoon Tribal Council.

Others may recognize Morris from her many years working the front line at the Martensville RCMP detachment, or from her time working as an advocate with Sask Central Victim Services.

Countless individuals have seen firsthand benefits from the compassion and kindness that Morris displays, and those that have worked alongside her over the years have gained an abundance of knowledge and personal growth thanks to this dedicated individual.

Wanda Soder-Munholland can attest to how having Morris in her life has been a gift. “Judy is one of the most caring people that I know, and I consider myself so blessed to call her one of my good friends.

She has listened and walked beside me through some tough files over the years and in my own personal life. She has never stopped advocating for Restorative Justice in the policing areas that Valley West covered and even offered our services in communities not in our service area,” Soder-Munholland explained.

This year marks the end of an era as Morris will be heading into retirement. Although she will no longer be working in these areas, her impact will continue to live on through the many individuals that she helped ensure received proper training. “Judy also advocated for training and support for all the mediators with Valley West and she will be missed by all,” SoderMunholland added.

“Judy so deserves her retirement, and I am so happy that she will have more time to travel with Ivan, spend time with all their grandchildren and of course save all her furry friends (cats especially). I want to say THANK YOU Judy on behalf of Martensville and surrounding communities for your commitment to Valley West Community Justice Committee for the past 19 years.”

“The executive would like to humbly thank each and every one of the people who have ever been involved and extend our deepest gratitude for all that you have done for this wonderful organization,” PWOS shared via social media.

Earlier this month, the CFOS expressed their gratitude for the PWOS, stating that the group had played an integral role in the purchase of many cancer patient care and comfort items such as IV poles, telehealth monitors, bedside carts, power recliners, weigh scales, infusion pumps and more, for both the Allan Blair Cancer Centre in Regina and the Saskatoon Cancer Centre. In addition, PWOS have raised more than $100,000 for the Mobile Mammography Bus and helped with the purchase of a brandnew SUV for the Saskatchewan Cancer Agency’s Breast Cancer Screening Program this year. “Please join us in thanking these incredible women who organized, participated in, and helped this event be so successful,” the CFOS stated.

Following the announcement, the CCS, along with the CFOS expressed an interest in having one last banquet in honour of PWOS. More information regarding this will be shared once available.
