Martensville & District Kinettes Have Busy Fall Planned Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

The Martensville Kinettes Club will be hosting their Charter Night on October 19th at 7:30pm in the Kinsmen Room at the Martensville Sports Centre. Tickets will be $20 and will include a program welcoming the new club into the Kin family as well as a midnight lunch and bar. The event will be open to all those 19+ and will also include live entertainment. They are inviting the community to come and join them in celebrating their inception. Tickets can be purchased by emailing martensvillekinettes@gmail.com or by calling Jodi at 306-361-9575.

The group’s first meeting was held on Tuesday, September 10th and they had a big turnout with many new faces taking part. “Our club is working on lots of events and projects already. We plan to go spend some time with the seniors at Diamond House in Warman at the end of this month; playing games, visiting and taking our kids to have a great night,” President Jodi Martens said.

The Kinettes will also be holding a food drive for the Martensville Free Pantry this fall, along with numerous other projects with the Martensville and District Kinsmen Club. “This is going to be a very exciting year. Please stay tuned and come out to support our great new club who is here to support the community’s greatest needs,” Martens added.

PROPERTY Police Investigating Martensville Vehicle Theft September 17, 2019 at 5:43 a.m. Police received a report of a stolen vehicle from Martensville, a 2002 Ford F350. The vehicle was later recovered and investigation is ongoing.

Items Stolen in Warman Break and Enter September 18, 2019 at 7:37 a.m. Police received a report of a break and enter to a residence in Warman. Stolen items include tools, light fixtures, speakers, electrical outlets, and a Bluetooth stereo. This is still under investigation.

Charges Laid After Report of Suspicious Male September 18, 2019 at 6:20 p.m. Police received a report in the RM of Corman Park of an unknown male parked on a property.

Member made patrol and vehicle was gone on arrival.

Prince Albert Crime Reduction RCMP Team later located the suspicious vehicle.

The 43 year old driver from Saskatoon was found to be a Prohibited Driver and was charged accordingly.

Senior Frauded in Online Scam September 19, 2019 at 4:00 p.m. Police received a report from a resident in Borden.

The elderly female had been frauded money through an online scam.

Luckily no personal information was released to the potential scam and it is still under investigation.

Enforcement of this bylaw will be increased in response to resident complaints. The penalty for parking the wrong way is $120.

Returning Your Waste and Recycle Bins to Your Property- Waste Bylaw

Residents are reminded to return waste and recycle bins to their properties and off the street after bins have been picked up. Bins should be placed in front of the premises by 7AM of the morning of collection day. Bins left on the street are potentially subject to damage caused by wind or traffic. Bins left on the street also interfere with local traffic, street parking as well as street sweeping or utility maintenance. Per the local bylaw, any person failing to adhere to the bylaw may be subject to fines.

No Injuries in Deer Collision on Highway 11 September 18, 2019 at 5:57 a.m. Police received a report of a motor vehicle collision on Highway 11 by Osler. A 34-year-old male was travelling south on Highway 11 when he struck a deer. The driver was not injured and vehicle was towed.

Minimum Wage In Saskatchewan Is $11.32 Effective October 1

Employers and employees are reminded that Saskatchewan’s minimum wage will increase to $11.32 as of Tuesday, October 1.

The change, which was announced in June, is the 11th increase since 2007 when the minimum wage was $7.95.

“Our government continues to introduce minimum wages that are sustainable and predictable,” Labour Relations and Workplace Safety Minister 19094AB0 Don Morgan said. “Since 2007 our government has increased the minimum wage by more than 40 per cent. We have also taken approximately 112,000 Saskatchewan residents off the provincial income tax roll, to help families keep more of their pay cheques in their pockets.”

Every year Saskatchewan’s minimum wage is calculated using an indexation formula. In 2010, the government introduced the formula, which gives equal weight to changes to the Consumer Price Index and Average Hourly Wage for Saskatchewan.

This annual review provides regular and predictable changes to the minimum wage.

Increases are announced by June 30 and take effect on October 1 of each year.

Maddog 13th Homecoming A Success Janine Hayward, Martensville Messenger

Great football, great fans and even the weather co-operated for the 13th annual Maddog Football Homecoming. Our hometown Maddogs played host to the Saskatoon Warriors as the Peewees opened things up at 1:00. Both teams lined up before the game to pay a special tribute to longtime KFL president Kelly Bowers who passed earlier this week. Kelly was a strong supporter of youth football for more than 24 years. He also never missed a Homecoming and was always there to cheer on both teams. His zest for life was infectious and he was loved by all. The players donned memorial stickers on their helmets to pay tribute to Kelly, and all the games Saturday were played in honour of him.

Kim Wall sang “O Canada” to open the ceremonies while Patti Rowley, our “Voice of the Maddogs”, announced the starting line-ups. Marty Maddog cheered the players onto the field. Mayor Kent Muench was at midfield to throw out the first pass to the Maddog player, Kyren Houmphanh and the game was officially started.

The highlights of the day were the arrivals of the Roughrider Cheerleaders and members from the Huskies and Hilltops football teams. Marty Maddog got the crowd cheering for their Maddog teams and entertained the fans.

After the Peewee game, the Maddog flag players hit the field, and played a series of inter squad games against each other. The Huskies and Hilltops lent a hand with the young athletes and coached them through a series of fun plays.

The Bantams rounded the day off at 3:30 when they hit the field.

This year the Rock 102 Roadsquad and C95 came as well. The gals had free draws and give-aways throughout the day including concert tickets and gift cards to Fatburger. They also had a fun football toss for breast cancer awareness and fans also tried their luck at the prize vault to see if they could crack the code. The day was fun filled with beautiful face art by Kreative Mom, and a Thomas Train bouncy castle by Cheep, Cheep Bouncers for the kids while the football fans enjoyed the games.

Power, framed picture from Mosaic stadium from Sasktel, as well as a night’s stay and restaurant card from The Sheraton Hotel, two rounds of golf at the Legends, a signed football from the Roughriders and a donation valued at $400 from Great West Breweries.

There were also many other sponsored items on the raffle table thanks to the generous donations from our community and surrounding areas. Returning to Homecoming this year was the Canalta Frisbee Toss sponsored by Canalta Hotel. Fans had the opportunity to toss their frisbee to win the prize packages.

The Maddogs would like to thank the homecoming committee, Allison Noble, and Janine Hayward and all the executive and volunteers who made this day happen. THIS WEEK IN SPORTS

Week 15 in the CFL was another great one and included one of the best comebacks in CFL history, but I’ll get to that in a bit. On Friday the Hamilton Tiger-Cats came out of the gates flying and scored 21 points in the first quarter against the Edmonton Eskimos.

After those three touchdowns though, Hamilton didn’t manage another major score for the rest of the game. Edmonton was able to slowly get back in the game and even tie it 27-27 with just 35 seconds left in the game! It was Hamilton though who put the final nail in the coffin as they hit a 34-yard field goal as the clock struck zero for the 30-27 walk-off victory.

With the win, Hamilton clinched a spot in the 2019 CFL Playoffs.

The other game on Friday saw the Calgary Stampeders strolled to a 23-16 win over the Toronto Argonauts. Toronto’s only major score came in the final two minutes of the fourth quarter and by that time it was far too late for a comeback. Calgary is now 9-4 on the season and tied for first place in the West.

On Saturday is when things got wild as the Winnipeg Blue Bombers held a 34-10 lead with less than a minute to go in the first half. Montreal managed a late TD with 12 seconds left in the second quarter and make the score 34-17. Winnipeg scored just 3 points in the third quarter but managed to shut out the Al’s to make the score 37-17 with one quarter to go. This is when Alouettes QB Vernon Adams Jr. decided to light it up and throw for three touchdowns including one with 6 seconds remaining to tie the game at 37 and just needing the extra point to secure the victory. Boris Bede put it right down the middle to cap off the biggest comeback in Montreal Alouettes history and win 38-27.

In the last game of the week the Ottawa RedBlacks offence was basically nonexistent as the BC Lions walked all over them to a 40-7 win. Ottawa’s seven points came from a field goal, a safety, a missed field goal single, and a punt single. The Ottawa loss clinched a playoff spot for both the Calgary Stampeders and the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. It also finished off a perfect 4-0 week making my record 40-17 on the year. My winning picks for Week 16 are Winnipeg, Edmonton, Saskatchewan, and Montreal.

The high school football team’s roster is currently sitting at 48 players, which is the largest group that they have seen thus far. “We have a fairly balanced group as far as ages go with approximately 15 players each from Grades 9, 10 and 11. There are also three Grade 9’s as well,” Evanisky said. This year, the team has numerous former Royals that are back helping out with coaching and sharing their knowledge from their post-secondary experiences.

The season opener was held on September 13th, which took the team to Humboldt against the Mohawks. They played the team in their alumni weekend under the lights and the Royals defeated the home team 28-14.

Next, the Royals went up against the Delisle Rebels on Friday, September 20th, and once again came out strong defeating them 54-14. “This is only the second time that we have won against Delisle, so it was a really proud moment and a fun experience for our players.

We will play them again at home this week and expect that it will be a closer game than last week.”

The first game for our home team will take place on Thursday, September 26th under the lights in a rematch against the Delisle Rebels. Admission is $5 for adults and $2 for students. Maddogs Face Mascots at Topper Game Janine Hayward, Martensville Messenger

The Martensville Maddog Peewee team, coached by Som Houmphanh, was invited to play against a flurry of the city’s mascots in the first Inaugural Kelly “Biff” Bowers Mascot Bowl on Sunday. The players were invited on the field at half time of the Hilltop game where they faced Topper and his mascot friends like, CJWW Holly Cow, Bruiser the Rush Bulldog, and Swish the Rattler rattlesnake in a mini Mascot Allstar game.

Coach Som Houmphanh explained how the Peewees attended the Hilltops’ first home opener against Regina. Topper, the Hilltop mascot, recruited some of the boys to help get the crowd excited and cheering for their Hilltops during that game. Topper was

so happy with the effort the Maddogs put in that he invited them back to the Hilltop game on September 22 against the Calgary Colts.

The Maddogs had the opportunity to play in the first Kelly “Biff” Bowers Mascot Bowl.

A trophy was refurbished to make this new trophy in honour of Kelly Bowers. The Martensville Maddogs were honoured to be chosen to play in the first Mascot Bowl and are able to keep the trophy for one month. They will be the first team engraved on the trophy.

The Hilltops extended their winning streak to 5 and 0 with the 51-6 defeat over the Colts.

$66 Million Highway Twinning Project Nears Completion At Vanscoy

A $66 million twinning project is nearing completion on Highway 7. The third and final phase of newly twinned highway around Vanscoy will be opening to traffic within the next week, weather permitting. The 12 kilometres (km) of new lanes around Vanscoy will complete 31 kms of Highway 7 twinning between Saskatoon and Delisle.

“Highway 7 is a busy corridor for commuters and shippers who transport goods to national and international markets,” Health Minister Jim Reiter said on behalf of Highways and Infrastructure Minister Greg Ottenbreit. “This twinning project, and the new passing lanes between Delisle and Kindersley, provides more opportunities to pass safely which helps traffic flow efficiently.”

The Government of Canada has provided funding of $27.5 million toward the twinning project.

Highway 7 is a key trade route for the province and connects communities such as Kindersley, Rosetown, Delisle and Saskatoon, as well as Calgary and ports on the west coast. Over the last 10 years, traffic volumes along the entire highway have increased by about 20 per cent, from nearly 3,000 vehicles per day to more than 3,500 per day today.

About 13 km of newly constructed lane east of Delisle to Vanscoy opened to traffic in July 2018. In October 2016, nine km of twinned highway opened to traffic between Saskatoon and Vanscoy.

“Our community is excited about the completion of the highway project,” Vanscoy Mayor Robin Odnokon said. “It will provide safety for our local commuters and all residents who travel the highway. We are very pleased to see this twinning project complete.”

“It will prove to be a major safety improvement for our residents and future residents who travel to Saskatoon for work and appointments,” Delisle Mayor Dave Anderchek said.

When the new lanes are opened, be cautious, alert and aware of signs directing traffic. Some additional work including signing, pavement marking and landscaping will still be required. Please slow to 60 km/hr through the work zone and pay close attention to the people and machinery working in the area.

The Government of Saskatchewan has invested $9 billion in transportation infrastructure since 2008.

Murray Mandryk Sask. Wary of Bernier Vote Split

One might wonder what the Saskatchewan Party’s first general election 20 years ago this month has to do with today’s federal election. Well, there’s one big lesson learned applicable to today, but let’s first revisit that 1999 election for those who have forgotten or are too young to remember.

It was called in early August for Sept. 7 - what was seen as an attempt by the then-Roy Romanow government to make it as difficult as possible for farmers to vote.

During the previous general election in 1995, the NDP had lost most if its rural base it established during the 1991 election that ousted Grant Devine’s Progressives from office. Frankly, the NDP might have likely lost every rural seat in 1995, were it not for Liberal and the Progressive Conservative candidates splitting votes in many ridings in that particular election.

This takes us to what may be similarities with today’s federal campaign where splitting votes among somewhat similar parties is an issue. It’s actually been an issue in Canada decades.

Two decades ago, the vote-splitting problem was more of a problem for the right. The Jean Chretien Liberals benefitted from the split between the Preston Manning’s Reform Party and what was left of the Progressive Conservatives in the aftermath of Brian Mulroney government, but after Reformers and Progressive Conservatives united, they thrived under the leadership of Stephen Harper. Suddenly, it was the Green Party, NDP and Liberals duking it out for the left-and left-centre vote.

There remains a left-splitting dynamic in this election and one big story will be how many votes Greens and New Democrats will take from the Liberals, but what may be as intriguing is vote splitting between Maxime Bernier’s PPC and Andrew Scheer’s CPC. For the first time in more than a decade, it is forcing Conservatives to revisit the problems of a split vote.

However, it’s less of a problem here in Saskatchewan for a couple reasons. Scheer’s Conservatives will take the vast majority of Saskatchewan’s 14 federal ridings because their rural support is strong. By virtue of emerging from old Progressive Conservatives and Reformers, Saskatchewan’s Conservative candidates have as solid a base of support as any candidates in the country.

So solid is Conservative support here, most if its candidate could even afford to have a few thousand votes drained off to the local PPC and feel no ill political effects.

However, there is likely another reason why more right-wing conservative-minded supporters in Saskatchewan are staying home with the Conservatives even though Bernier’s view that supply management must end, immigration and refugees and scientifically proven manmade global warming is not having a significant impact, could very well be more aliened with their thinking.

Saskatchewan Conservatives, both right and centre right, are well aware of what happened federally prior to Harper when their allegiances were split between two federal parties and they are certainly aware of what happened in Saskatchewan prior to the right being united under the Sask. Party.

It is political lore in this province that the CCF/ NDP would form government with less than 50 per cent of the popular vote because Liberals and Progressive Conservatives would split vote. That, however, changed in 1999 with the Sask. Party’s first general election, one in which they almost won government; however, Saskatchewan only accounts for 4.1 per cent of the current 338 seats in this country.

Vote splitting between the PPC and CPC elsewhere in the country may be an issue, especially where Conservative candidates are in close races to knock off Liberals and wrestle power away from Justin Trudeau.

Losing right-wing votes to the PPC may make a difference in some Ontario seats, but here in Saskatchewan, conservatives seem well versed in their own political history.

Saskatchewan’s economy is strong and more people are working in the province than ever before, despite economic headwinds. August marked the 13th consecutive month of job growth in Saskatchewan with 13,000 new jobs year-over-year. Saskatchewan’s unemployment rate was the third lowest in the country at 5.1 per cent.

Fast and reliable access to today’s digital economy contributes to strong communities. Better wireless service, particularly in rural areas, is a priority of the Government of Saskatchewan. Rural residents require access to fast and reliable services that are on par with urban areas, and SaskTel is working to fill in coverage gaps where they exist.

As part of our government’s Wireless Saskatchewan initiative, SaskTel has been able to add 15 new macro towers, providing better coverage in places like busy provincial parks, along major highways, and in areas with little to no cellular coverage. These new macro towers are in addition to the previously announced 103 small cell sites.

Since 2010, SaskTel has completed more than 3,200 initiatives to enhance its wireless network that now boasts more than 800 cell sites across the province. SaskTel will continue to evaluate further expansion to better serve Saskatchewan.

Children’s Hospital Set to Open on September 29

The new Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital (JPCH) in Saskatoon is a spectacular, state-of-the-art facility that will soon see Saskatchewan children and expectant mothers receive exceptional health care closer to home.

Earlier this month, representatives from the provincial government, Saskatchewan Health Authority and the JPCH Foundation gathered with donors and community members to celebrate its completion, and the fact that Saskatchewan is no longer one of two provinces in Canada without a dedicated maternal and children’s hospital.

This brand-new 176-bed facility puts Saskatchewan at the forefront of research and innovation, provides hope and healing, and marks culmination of a decade’s worth of hard work and determination that started with a simple vision: providing world-class health care for children and families for generations.

JPCH will offer neonatal intensive care, pediatric intensive care, general pediatrics, pediatric emergency and ambulatory services. Maternal services will include labour and delivery, antepartum and postpartum care. Almost 60 pediatric specialists, sub-specialists and surgeons will be working in more than 20 specialties.

This year’s budget provides $9.6 million to finalize information technology needs and an additional $23 million to support operations when the hospital opens later this month. The total capital cost for the hospital is $285.9 million. The province provided about $257 million in capital costs, while the JPCH Foundation and donor contributions totalled about $75 million for capital costs, hospital equipment and furniture.

The words thank you never seem enough to adequately express our gratitude for thousands of individuals and hundreds of community groups who have contributed to the hospital project in some way. They have hosted every kind of fundraiser imaginable and in doing so, displayed the very best of what our province has to offer.

I am pleased to see that the tireless efforts of volunteers, donors, community members, the Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital Foundation, Brynn Boback-Lane, Jim Pattison, and countless others all came together to make the dream of the new Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital a reality.

The Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital will officially open to patients on September 29, when all pediatric and maternal inpatients will move in from Royal University Hospital and new admissions will be accepted.

Thank you, Saskatchewan for supporting the work of the JPCH Foundation and for providing a home for hope.

Martensville School Bringing Awareness to Mental Health Support For Youth Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

Valley Manor Elementary School (VMS) is helping to shed some light on the importance of mental health not only in our youth, but in all of us. The Valley Manor Student Community Council hosted an informational event that saw Judy JaunzemsFernuk, an Educator & Mental Health Practitioner with Prairie Sky Education Personal and Professional Support Services, speak about how parents and educators can help encourage proper stress management within our youth in order to teach them healthy coping techniques when it comes to mental health.

The event was open to VMS families, as well as families from the other schools within Martensville. VMS Principal Garth Harrison spoke at the beginning of the event, noting that, “At a time in our lives where information, much of it online, is coming at us at what seems like a million miles an hour, we need to take time to stop and talk and clarify some things for ourselves and the people in the world around us.” Harrison encouraged those in attendance to take this information into the world and pass along JaunzemsFernuk’s information to their children’s schools.

Some key points that Jaunzems-Fernuk covered included discussing stress within our lives, managing emotions and managing our stress. “There is no way to support our young people if we can’t get right with ourselves and manage our own stress,” she explained.

As a mother of three, Jaunzems-Fernuk stated that the biggest teachers in her life have been her children. Additionally, Jaunzems-Fernuk has much experience as an educator and within mental health support.

The reality that today’s youth is facing is a scary one and Jaunzems-Fernuk provided statistics that put just how scary it is into perspective. “Today’s children may be the first generation to have poorer health and shorter lifespans than their parents,” was one point Jaunzems-Fernuk made, which was information provided by the Heart and Stroke Foundation: Report on the Health of Canadians 2017. “It is up to us to learn about

and understand mental health and wellbeing and take that forward to help our kids to be successful as well. We have to manage our stress in order to help our young people manage their stress with school, technology, at home, everywhere. We can’t protect them from everything, so we need to arm them with the tools they need to be successful themselves, despite the adversity coming at them,” Jaunzems-Fernuk said.

Part of this is teaching kids that reaching out for help when it comes to mental health support is okay. “We need to get ahead of this in prevention and intervention before a crisis happens and start making mental health part of the conversation.”

Stress is a normal part of our daily lives, but Jaunzems-Fernuk explained that it is when that stress turns into distress and burnout that it is time to be concerned. “Stress is purposeful. It motivates us and keeps us aware and in tune to what is happening. Learning to manage that stress to prevent it from becoming something more is a process. We have all experienced a high level of stress at some point in our lives. Those thoughts can swirl us into a drain, but our thoughts can also interrupt this process and prevent us from going down the drain. We have the power to decide how we will react.” Jaunzems-Fernuk continued to explain how we can take a negative event, have a positive or neutral reaction to it and create a positive or neutral outcome, reestablishing just how powerful our own thoughts can be.

The ability to use our thoughts to help prevent us from facing severe stress, which can lead to anger, depression and anxiety is not something that takes place over night. It is something that takes practice and it is up to us to learn what our triggers are and what we can do to help relieve those negative feelings whether it be through meditation, exercise, counselling, or another outlet that works for you.

Jauznems-Fernuk will be speaking with grade 6-8 students at VMS on Wednesday, September 25th and Tuesday, October 1st. Following the presentation to parents, numerous attendees contacted Jaunzems-Fernuk stating that this topic is of great importance within the community and requested that a mental health workshop be held on this subject.
