Council Hears from Concerned Residents Regarding Alley Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger
At the October 5, 2021 Martensville City Council meeting, there was a delegation from multiple Martensville residents that have been having issues regarding a small section of alley located on 2nd Avenue North. This section of the alley is positioned between two homes and leads to the back of homes located along Anna Crescent, only two of which have garages located within the alley. According to the residents, there is a large amount of traffic that utilizes this alley to access the multiple condominiums located in this area and between traffic and garbage trucks, there is an excess of dust being created which leads to the homes within the area unable to open windows and having to wash vehicles and their houses quite often. During the presentation, it was noted that many vehicles drive over the speed limit and that there are many close calls with vehicles turning out onto 2nd Avenue North into traffic from the alley. Council was asked to consider multiple solutions to this issue, such as; applying a dust reduction coating, placing a stop sign at the end of the alley, installing additional speed limit signs, install speed bumps, or pave a small section of the roadway. Council will discuss this issue further at an upcoming meeting.

Martensville Fire Department Sees Increase in Calls for 2021 Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger
As of October 4, 2021, the Martensville Fire Department (MFD) has responded to a total of 373 calls this year. Out of these calls, 241 have been for EMS related situations such as heart attacks, chest pain, difficulty breathing, COVID, etc., with the rest being for fires, motor vehicle accidents, and public assistance. “These numbers have already surpassed last year, and if we keep going the way that we are, we are looking at exceeding 400. This is definitely one of our busiest years,” MFD Deputy Fire Chief Dean Brooman said. What this means for the MFD is a little more commitment from members when it comes to being available to respond to calls. “You could say that it is working us harder and we are out and about more, but that is what we are here to do,” Brooman added. The MFD currently consists of 34 members in total; however, applications for new members have just been accepted with the interview process taking place in the near future. Successful applicants will be going through physical testing, criminal record checks and more before being accepted. Once accepted, members will be on probation for a year. When it comes to responding to calls, the MFD is split into five companies during the week that are sorted from A to E. Each company is given a week where they are on shift from 10pm to 6pm on weeknights, so if a call comes in, that company responds. If a major call comes in such as a fire or a collision, it is all hands on deck. For weekends, there is a standby where members commit to a weekend where they can be around to answer calls so there is always a crew available from Friday

Fire Prevention Week in Saskatchewan Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger
21102AA2 21102AA3
Fire Prevention Week takes place each October, with this year occurring from October 3 to 9. This year’s theme, Learn the Sounds of Fire Safety, is being bolstered by a new, made-in-Saskatchewan activity book, which is being distributed to Kindergarten to Grade 5 students across the province this week. “The Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency (SPSA) and the Saskatchewan Association of Fire Chiefs (SAFC) collaborated ABOVE: Checking your fire alarms regularly is to create the Fire Safety Activity an important habit to get into to ensure they are in Book,” said Saskatchewan proper working order in case of emergency. Corrections, Policing and Public Safety Minister Christine Tell. “This is the first educational resource of its kind to be developed and distributed entirely in Saskatchewan in many years.” The Fire Safety Activity Book, along with other fire prevention resources, is available for download at https://www.saskpublicsafety. ca/2021-fire-prevention-week. In Martensville, typically the local Fire Department hosts an Open House during Fire Prevention Week; however due to COVID, this will not be taking place this year. Instead, the Martensville Fire Department (MFD) and the Martensville Library have teamed up to help share information regarding fire prevention awareness within the community. Throughout the week, goodie bags are available for the kids while supplies last, as well as prize draws, fire themed crafts and Look and Find in the Park. Until October 10th, stop by the library to get your Look and Find paper, then visit Andrea’s Park to play. Once complete, return it to the library to enter to win a prize. Additionally, the MFD will be sharing information regarding fire safety via social media, which will include things that can be done at home such as testing fire alarms, fire escape plans, ensuring you have a working fire extinguisher, etc. “This year’s theme is all about learning the sounds of fire safety, which means ensuring you know the sounds in your house, school, workplace, church, etc. It is so important to know those alarms and what to do when they go off. Different alarms make different sounds whether it means that a battery needs to be replaced, or it is coming to the end of it’s lifespan, or in the case of a continuous beep that something is wrong and you need to get out,” MFD Deputy Fire Chief Dean Brooman explained. Brooman noted that there are many things you can do to help ensure your safety in addition to knowing what the sounds of your alarms mean. Firstly, having inter-connected alarms is beneficial so that when one goes off, the rest follow. These can be hard-wired in, or a wireless option can also be purchased. Making a note of the life expectancy date on your smoke and Carbon Monoxide alarms so you can replace them when needed, as well as checking your batteries regularly is also important. Brooman added that checking your alarms monthly to ensure they are working is good practice, as well as giving them the occasional vacuum to remove dust. “These alarms aren’t always something we are thinking about, but they Thank you for your service make a big difference in an emergency situation, so installing them properly, being familiar with their sounds and checking them regularly could absolutely save a life,” Brooman stated. For more information regarding local Fire Prevention Week activities and information, visit the ‘Martensville Library’ and the ‘Martensville Fire Department’ on Facebook.

Government Doesn’t Have a Handle of This Pandemic
The Saskatchewan government simply needs to get a better handle on the pandemic. That applies to many aspects of the COVID-19 crisis that has seen our daily case rise to numbers just shy of 500 cases per day and has also seen the month of September seeing (as of the writing of this) 79 deaths including a record 10 deaths in a single day. Ontario, with 14 times our population, is now consistently reporting less than 500 cases a day. We have the lowest vaccination rate in the country - something that requires the unflinching attention of Premier Scott Moe’s Saskatchewan Party government. Can you imagine what these numbers would be like if we didn’t have 70 per cent of the eligible population and nearing 90 per cent of the elderly fully vaccinated? Even to this day, there are doubters out there who keep rattling off rhetoric that COVID-19 is nothing more than the common flu that only accounts for 10 to 15 deaths a year. According to the Ministry of Health, since the arrival of the Delta variant, a third of the most severe COVID-19 cases were in people with no known preexisting conditions. What this means is that COVID-19 is no longer a virus that just targets the more susceptible elderly or those with accumulated medical problems. Healthy people are getting sick. Kids are getting sick. We need to think about that. That there are still people out there deliberately rejecting vaccinations is mindboggling. Chalk it up to a world where our biggest threat may very well be the ability to spread false information and people who isolate themselves in a world of mistrust of science and authority. In fairness, neither the Saskatchewan Party government nor any other government anywhere is going to persuade all of its citizenry to do the right thing for themselves or for society as a whole, but that Saskatchewan is not running neck and neck with Alberta for the record of the worst COVID-19 record in the country shows how bad we are doing. It is here where Moe and Health Minister Paul Merriman - both of whom have been largely absent from public view or distracting by less critical matters since the July 11 re-opening - need to bear down. This surely begins with the Saskatchewan government swallowing its pride and working with the federal government. After the federal election, Moe lambasted the Trudeau government for taking the summer off to campaign in an unnecessary and unwanted election - a notion in which most reasonable people can agree, but there’s a massive problem if Moe thinks our only problem is reserves and northern communities that fall under both federal and provincial jurisdiction. The first problem is that it strongly suggests this government itself, not have a handle on where the problem is. Saskatchewan does not release COVID-19 cases or vaccination rates in specific communities. He knows the north and inner cities are big problems, but we also know there are problems in the southwest (where vaccination rate ranges of those under 40 years from 62 to 67 per cent) and the southeast (61 to 69 per cent in this age group.) It’s up to government to know where the problems are and address them. Now, Merriman is rejecting federal Health Minister Patty Hajdu’s offer to provide extra staff, instead insisting this province needs monoclonal antibody treatment of rapid testing. We don’t need more squabbling. We have both vaccines and tests unused - perhaps because the province since July 11th let its guard down on COVID-19 and focused on other matters. Merriman said this summer it was people’s right not to get vaccinated. Now, he presides over a mess. He and his government need to get a handle on the COVID-19 problem.
Proof Of Vaccination Or Negative Tests Requirements Now In Effect As of October 1st, proof of COVID-19 vaccination or a negative test result is required in Saskatchewan for public access to a range of businesses, event venues, as well as for all Government of Saskatchewan ministry, crown and agency employees. (Note that mandatory indoor masking remains in effect for all indoor public venues in the province at this time.) A list of the businesses and venues where the proof of vaccinations or a negative test result is required, as well as Q&A for businesses and a poster to support notification to customers is available at Saskatchewan.ca/covid-19. Types of Vaccination Proof Documents Businesses and organizations have several options for checking acceptable proof of vaccination. These include: • A QR code/MySaskHealthRecord vaccine certificate either printed or on the patron's mobile device as a screenshot or in SK Vax Wallet; • A printed hard copy of MySaskHealthRecord vaccine certificate with or without a QR code; • Wallet cards issued at the time of vaccinations; and • A COVID-19 vaccination printout from Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) public health. Businesses requiring proof of vaccination will also require ID from anyone 18 and older. Youth aged 12-17 will also need to show ID unless accompanied by an adult with proof of vaccination and ID. Visit www.ehealthsask.ca/MySaskHealthRecord/MySaskHealthRecord/ to get your COVID-19 vaccination certificate and learn more about the SK Vax Wallet app for viewing or displaying your QR code and SK Vax Verifier app for businesses and organizations to determine if customers meet vaccination requirements. Proof of a Negative Test - Individuals who do not have proof of vaccination have the option of providing proof of a negative COVID-19 test result from within the previous 72 hours. A self-administered take-home rapid antigen test will not be accepted as valid proof of negative COVID-19 results and the SHA is no longer supporting testing for asymptomatic individuals at the public testing sites, preserving resources to test symptomatic and other at-risk populations. The cost for all proof of negative test results for asymptomatic testing will be the responsibility of the individual. Individuals requiring a negative test result have several private options on the market that will provide a rapid antigen test or a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test for a fee. A current list of locations and labs offering 21111BS1 testing services is on Saskatchewan.ca under Where to Get Tested. Stick it to COVID - Get Your Vaccination - Vaccination remains the most important preventative step you can take to protect yourself and those around you from COVID-19. W i t h increased demand for vaccination, the Saskatchewan Health Authority is adding vaccination clinics. Watch for details on clinic locations and times listed on the SHA website. Please note clinics are subject to change based on demand, resources, etc. Any changes to clinic hours and location will be updated online. A map of pharmacies participating in COVID-19 vaccinations is available at www. saskatchewan.ca/ covid19-pharmacies.

Run for the Cure Fundaiser Exceeds Previous Total by More Than Double Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger Martensville’s business community often comes together to not only support one another, but also to help bring awareness and support to numerous incredible causes. Most recently, TEAM IRON elles Personal Training owner/operator Leanne Kolbe, along with Wrench Fitness manager Kerry Potter hosted a Run for the Cure Fun Run on October 1st to help raise money for the Canadian Cancer Society. In 2019, this same event was held and saw an amazing total of $3,000 being raised. Due to COVID, no fundraiser was held last year; however, this year, the duo set high expectations, looking to exceed their 2019 total, which they did by more than double. This year, a whopping $7,536.25 was raised, which earned them the Family and Friends Team Challenge Award for the most money raised. A total of 35 athletes came out to participate, meeting at Wrench Fitness, and then took part in either a 3km walk, or a 5km run throughout the community. Martensville was selected as the route to be officially marked by Run for the Cure due to being a top fundraiser. “We far exceeded our fundraising goal, had a blast hanging out as a team and got in some exercise while we were at it. Thank you to all who contributed and participated and thank you to Run for the Cure for marking our route,” Kolbe stated.
