Newly Opened Overpass Provides Safer Option For Motorists Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

With the Main Street overpass now open to traffic both northbound and southbound, as well as Range Road 384 accessible now, motorists are now entering and exiting the city with ease. Peter Kiewit Sons ULC, the company in charge of both the Highway 11 and 12 interchanges, is pleased with the progress that both projects have seen. “This marks another big milestone for the project team as there is now live traffic on both of the new bridges,” Dawson Christie, Field Engineer for Kiewit, stated in an update.

Traffic was opened to northbound traffic entering Martensville at the Main Street location, as the 4th Street South entrance has been temporarily closed to traffic in order to complete the final configuration. “Kiewit and our partners are working hard to minimize disruptions to the public as construction processes and appreciate everyone’s patience,” Christie added.

With the project moving along at a rapid pace, City of Martensville officials are pleased with the progress that has been taking place. “This project has been extremely well received and we are very excited for it to be open and improve the safety component of access to and from the city.

They have been working on it extremely efficiently and when you see it open, it is such a noticeable improvement for accessibility to our community.

It is a huge change, and not only does it make the community look different because of the physical presence of it, but just the ability to safely cross the highway is so worth it,” Mayor Kent Muench stated.

“I am very pleased with the progress on the interchange project. The contractors have been making every effort to minimize traffic disruptions while completing construction safely and quickly.

The interchange will improve safety for residents and visitors to Martensville, and is just one more example of the growth of our vibrant community,” Matt Gruza, City of Martensville Director of Infrastructure and Planning explained.

With the construction season coming to an end, motorists can continue to see traffic restrictions for the remainder of the season and are reminded to follow speed limitations throughout the construction zone.

City Council Update Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

Martensville City Council met for the first time this month and had several discussion items on their agenda. First was a Fire Protection Agreement that the City of Martensville has with the Rural Municipality of Corman Park. The agreement provided at the October 2nd Council meeting was an update to the original agreement, which expired on June 30, 2018. A Request for Decision (RFD) was provided by City Manager Scott Blevins and Martensville Fire Chief Kurtis Dyck, which stated that the capital contribution after the expiry of a four year term has been changed from $50,000 to $80,000 per year. The RFD also stated that $5,000 of the annual contribution for each department is intended to cover medical response calls and that Fire Chiefs in the area have negotiated the terms of the agreement with the RM of Corman Park and that by agreeing to this, it would promote regional cooperation and reduce the need for a larger amount of fully furnished fire halls within the area. Blevins recommended that the City authorize the Mayor and himself to sign the Fire Protection Agreement.

Secondly, Dillon Shewchuk, City of Martensville Community Economic Development Manager presented an RFD regarding a Vehicle for Hire Application from a company called RIIDE. RIIDE is a new corporate entity that is extending service to centres in the region and in time, through the province. They are currently applying to provide taxi services within Martensville, and although they provide service like a Taxi, they will also utilize tools that are typically associated with Transportation Network Companies such as Uber or Lyft. RIIDE will provide numerous options including an app, and will accept a range of payment options including cash, credit card and debit. With the company currently being used widely in the UK, Ireland and the Capitol region in the USA, Saskatoon would be the first centre in Canada to use the brand. If approved, RIIDE would offer 24/7 service, with rates being comparable to that of Saskatoon Taxis. Shewchuk also noted that the company requires drivers to be 21+, have class 4 licenses, undergo a driving abstract and criminal record check and utilize sedans, vans and SUVS that are no more than seven years old with SGI inspections. Benefits to this addition would be developing Martensville’s brand as a place for business, and will also help to provide transportation options for seniors within the community. Shewchuk recommended that Council endorse the application for ten taxi licenses within Martensville.

Lastly, Council reviewed a request from Great Plains College regarding a conference taking place on November 7 titled: “Rural Reconciliation: An Educational Gathering” asking for help in promoting the event through sponsorship and attendance which council was in favor of.

Hunters Can Help Monitor the Spread Of CWD

The Ministry of Environment is asking hunters to help monitor the spread and intensity of Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) in wild deer, elk, moose and caribou populations by submitting heads of harvested animals for disease testing, free of charge.

CWD is a fatal, infectious central nervous system disease that can affect deer, elk, caribou and moose.

First discovered in wild mule deer in 2000, the disease has now been confirmed in 44 of Saskatchewan’s 83 wildlife management zones and three of the four cervid species present in the province (deer, elk, moose). It has not yet been detected in caribou.

Hunters can help reduce the spread of CWD through the proper disposal of deer carcass waste. Avoid transporting a deer carcass from the area where it was taken, especially from areas where CWD has been detected. If a carcass is transported, hunters are asked to dispose of it by double-bagging it and taking it to a landfill.

Although no human case of CWD has ever been identified, hunters should not eat, or distribute for human consumption, the meat or other parts from animals that have not been tested or that are found to be CWD-positive.

Heads can be submitted for testing at a number of designated drop-off locations across the province throughout the hunting season.

For a list of drop-off sites and information on how to submit a sample for testing, hunters can visit the Saskatchewan CWD submission and tracking website at www.cwdsk.ca/.

The City of Martensville hosted their second annual Culture Days on Saturday, September 29th. Numerous activities were offered such as Ukrainian Dance, wood carving, origami, water colour painting, library crafts and LEGO. Each activity was demonstrated and taught by local volunteers who dedicated their own time to offer these opportunities to the community.

Due to lack of attendance, City of Martensville Program Coordinator II, Karly Russin, doubts that the event will continue next year. “I think the weather played a factor with people not wanting to come out; however, I think it is also the date. It is nationally chosen date, so we don’t have the ability to move it, but it is a busy time for many families with sports starting back up, so unfortunately, it’s not a great time of year.”

Russin, who is disappointed that the event is unlikely to continue, feels that culture is something that has been missing within the community. Despite the fact that Culture Days has taken place nationally on the last weekend of September since 2010, the idea was something new to Martensville. “We haven’t really tapped into it and I think that it is still something that is fresh and new and something that people maybe don’t give the time to think about. I do think that an event like this is huge to promote culture in a community that hasn’t really thought about it before,” said Russin. “Thank you to all of the volunteers that came out to Culture Days. It really is amazing how much talent we have in this community,” Russin added.

In addition to the Culture Days event held this past Saturday, the City of Martensville also wanted to add a touch of Culture to their annual fall geocaching activity. Rather than run the event the first week of October as done in the past, they moved the date up in order to correspond with Culture Days. “At each geocache, we added a cultural twist with an activity or fact. So far, we have had many participants of all ages completing the challenge.

It is great to see older adults and families with young children participate in the fun,” Russin stated. The geocache event will run until Friday, October 5th. For more information on this or other City of Martensville events, visit the ‘City of Martensville Recreation’ Facebook page.

The following is the local media release for the Warman Detachment of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police for the week of September 24, 2018 to October 1, 2018. Police received 150 calls for service from September 24, 2018 to October 1, 2018.

TRAFFIC Two Vehicle Accident at Hwy 12 and Hwy 305 September 25, 2018 at 9:30 p.m.

Police received a complaint of a two vehicle accident at the junction of Highway 12 and Highway 305. Police attended the scene and issued a ticket to a male youth for proceeding from a stop sign before safe to do so. The 67 year old male driver and their 59 year old female passenger from Marcelin received minor injuries. Both vehicles required towing from the scene.

Female Stopped for Speeding Receives Impaired Driving Charge September 28, 2018 at 2:10 p.m. Police were conducting traffic stops in Martensville when they stopped a vehicle for speeding. Police approached the vehicle and spoke with the driver, who appeared to have consumed alcohol. Police arrested the 35 year old female driver and took her back to the Detachment to provide a breath sample. She was released on documents for an upcoming court date on impaired driving charges. There were no injuries.

Two Vehicle Accident at Hwy 12 and Lutheran Road September 28, 2018 at 6:45 p.m. Police received a complaint of a two vehicle accident on Highway 12 at the intersection to Lutheran Road.

Police attended and found that a 34 year old female driving one of the vehicle’s left the stop sign before it was safe and was struck by a northbound vehicle driven by a 23 year old male from Martensville. The female was issued a ticket for proceeding from a stop sign before safe to do so. The male was not injured. Both vehicles required towing from the scene.

Vehicle In Ditch on Hwy 12 Results in DUI Charge September 29, 2018 at 8:45 p.m.

Police received a complaint of a vehicle in the ditch on Highway 12 near Martensville. Police attended the scene and arrested the 62 year old male driving the vehicle from Saskatoon on possible impaired driving charges. He was taken back to the Detachment to provide a breath sample. He was released a short time later on Impaired care and control charges. There were no injuries. The vehicle was towed from the scene.

PROPERTY Suspicious Parcel Reported at Martensville Residence September 24, 2018 at 8:45 p.m.

Police received a complaint of a suspicious package at a residence in Martensville. The caller advised that someone dropped off a parcel at their residence that seemed suspicious in nature. Police attended the location. The package appeared to have been dropped off at the wrong address.

Stolen Vehicles in Martensville and Warman Recovered September 25, 2018 at 1:40 p.m.

Police received a complaint of theft of a truck from a compound on 9th street north in Martensville. The vehicle was recovered a short time later at another location in Martensville.

Investigation into this matter is ongoing.

September 26, 2018 at 7:35 a.m.

Police received a complaint of theft of a vehicle from Warman.

The caller advised that they had parked an advertising vehicle on the north end of Warman when

it went missing. Police arrested and charged a 47 year old female from Big River with theft of a vehicle.

Vehicles Reported Stolen in Warman September 28, 2018 at 5:30 a.m.

Police received a complaint of theft of a vehicle from a residence on the 200 block of Crenshaw Way in Warman. The caller reported that the vehicle was left unlocked when it was stolen. Investigation into this matter is ongoing.

September 29, 2018 at 1:15 p.m.

Police received a complaint of theft of a motor vehicle from a business near Warman. The caller reported that the vehicle was taken while parked at the business. Police attended the scene and took a statement from the owner of the vehicle.

Investigation into this matter is ongoing.

PEOPLE September 24, 2018 at 11:20 p.m. Police received a request for a well being check on an individual at a residence in Warman. The caller advised they were unable to contact a

family member and it was out of character for them. Police attended the residence and spoke with the 28 year old female who advised she was fine. There were no charges.

Section 35(2)(b) of the Traffic Safety Act refers: willfully deface/alter a photo identification card.

The fine for this infraction is $ 125.00.

Pro-Residential School Ad a Sad Affair

It’s irritating that politicians or third-party groups think people can be easily manipulated. About the only thing as irritating is there will always be a few people - no matter where they live - who will let themselves be manipulated by hearing only what they want to hear.

These thoughts cross one’s mind in the wake of the controversy over the Winnipeg-based Frontier Centre for Public Policy’s short-lived paid advertisements on rural radio stations on the “myth” that Indian residential schools were a bad experience for every student that attended. Most of you will quickly recognize the two-part nature of this one-sided assessment.

Obviously, not every First Nation person that went through residential schools was affected in the same way. Some will acknowledge they did get a quality education. One might venture as far in assessing the ads to say that because the residential school experience was limited to a smaller per cent of the First Nation population, it can’t be solely attributed to every issue experienced by a First Nation person today.

But what right does anyone have calling their devastating impact a “myth”? The fact is that there were substantial examples of physical and sexual abuse - among the worst, occurred in this province involving Anglican Gordon Reserve School director William Penniston Starr who was criminally convicted of vial acts.

There is simply no question that this single individual had a profound impact on not only his victims, but also the entire Gordon First Nations population have dealt with pain and hurt in their community for generations. In turn, this actually defined relations between the First Nation and nearby community of Punnichy for decades.

Obviously, not all residential schools faced such

specific sexual abuses, but plenty of them faced physical abuse at the hands of supposed religious teachers. This also had a profound effect on them, their relationship with the white community and their long-term ability to successfully parent.

It is a fact verified by their graves that many hundreds of these children died in the care of schools. It is also a fact that they were denied their religion and culture and even the right to speak their languages. Against their will and the will of their families, they were removed from their homes for long stretches.

It is a fact that some of these children died while trying to get home to see their families and that families and others on reserves would try and hide these children. One can chalk it up to the values and norms of the day, but that does not excuse the problems passed on from generation to generation. Nor does it make the long-term repercussions any less lasting.

So for the Frontier Centre to ask whether Canadians are “being told the whole truth about residential

schools” begs the question: Was the right-wing think tank choosing to tell the whole story? One can only speculate as to why choose to do so.

The advertisement was said to be promotion for an article the website entitled “Myth versus Evidence: Your Choice”. The piece was authored by Mark DeWolf, who says he was a non-Indigenous residential school student.

After the controversy erupted, the article was removed from the Frontier Centre website.

Well-known radio voice Roger Currie who voiced the two-minute-long advertisement denounced the content, saying it “certainly doesn’t represent my views”. And the radio station chain pulled ads. But, again, why was this notion being promoted in the first place?

That they seemed specifically aimed at a rural audience strongly suggests they were designed to promote this view at a time of considerably racial tension in rural Saskatchewan. The ads likely didn’t work on most people.

But it’s sad the Frontier Centre would try … and that maybe it did work of a few people.

Job Numbers Continue to Grow

Over the past decade, Saskatchewan has had the second highest job creation rate in all of Canada, nearly double the national rate of job growth.

Saskatchewan continues to grow with an increase of 2,800 full-time jobs since August 2017.

We are thankful to our job creators for stepping up and continuing to create opportunities, however, we remain cautious of headwinds in the labour market created by the federal government.

Supporting Trade and Investment

Saskatchewan’s economic growth continues to be put at risk by trade disputes, the job-killing Trudeau carbon tax, and the federal government’s inability to get a pipeline project built that they now own.

Since the election of the Trudeau government, Canada’s relationships with Saskatchewan’s major trading partners have deteriorated, and our agricultural exports have been impacted in a variety of countries including India, China, Saudi Arabia and Italy.

There continues to be uncertainty in the future of the North American Free Trade Agreement and we continue to be subject to punishing U.S. tariffs on our steel and softwood lumber exports. This is why we are embarking on trade missions to support Saskatchewan industries grow and diversify their export markets in order to maintain and create jobs for Saskatchewan people here at home.

Trade and its related investment play a vital role in our provincial economy, supporting thousands of jobs and generating billions in wealth for our province.

Increasing Pipeline Capacity Vital to Our Economy

This past spring, when western Canada was facing serious shortages in pipeline capacity, we calculated the

cost to Saskatchewan’s economy to be $2.6 billion, with a direct cost to taxpayers, who own the resource, at about $210 million.

That's a result of Canadian producers who are restricted in getting their product to market by either rail or truck, thus taking a discount from the world price of oil.

Today, that price gap has grown, and the cost to our economy is now $4.4 billion per year, and $300 million to taxpayers.

That $300 million could help build more schools, pave more roads, and provide more services to Saskatchewan people, but when our nation can’t get pipelines built, or worse, when the NDP and other interest groups oppose them, we all lose.

Your Saskatchewan Party government will continue to advocate for pipelines to tidewater for Western Canadian oil in order to reduce the price differential that our oil currently faces, and to reduce the amount of oil that is currently transported by rail that has created backlogs for our agricultural products and other resources like potash and lumber.

Fighting the Federal Carbon Tax

We will also continue to stand up against a carbon tax, which will make Saskatchewan, and all of Canada, uncompetitive for foreign investment compared to neighbouring U.S. States that will never have a carbon tax. These U.S. States have been made more attractive due to recent tax changes and less burdensome regulations.

The leader of the Saskatchewan NDP has called our government’s carbon tax fight a “pointless crusade”.

We don’t believe standing up for Saskatchewan people and Saskatchewan jobs is a pointless crusade and we will continue to stand up on these and other issues important to our province.

Focused on the careful management of spending, keeping our economy strong, and investing in priorities for Saskatchewan people, Saskatchewan’s three-year plan to balance the budget by 2019-20 remains on track. Recently, Moody’s Investors Service confirmed Saskatchewan has the highest possible credit rating – Aaa – a further demonstration that our fiscal plan is working.

Martensville Fire Department Hosts Annual Open House in Honour of Fire Prevention Week escape plan for their families in emergency situations.

Once complete, forms can be dropped back off at the library and one lucky winner will be announced on October 10th. “We hope the kids like it and we hope we get a good response. We will take the truck out, show up and they can show us their plan, and then we will hand over a couple of pizzas,” Brooman said. Entries are due by October 10th.

The work that the fire department does within this community extends far beyond the title of fire department, as they provide care in a wide range of situations from fires, medical emergencies, water rescue, ice rescue, motor vehicle accidents, mutual aid support for other departments in the area and much more. Each member of the fire department undergoes extensive training in numerous areas in order to serve the community better.

Each Wednesday night members meet for training to ensure all of their skills are perfectly honed in case of emergency. Training nights can at times put members in “real-life” situations; such as the recent demonstration done at Richardson’s Milling where members rescued an “injured” person from the top of the structure.

Local Fire Department Goes Above and Beyond for Community

All of the service and care provided by the MFD does not go unnoticed, as they are appreciated by residents of Martensville and surrounding areas, visitors to the area, family members and more. “We greatly appreciate the work that they do. Lots of them sign up not only to help the community, but to better themselves as well, but we have to remember to be really grateful for what they do because they are often going into situations that are very stressful, very trying, often medical emergencies or accidents. They are called the fire department, but they do so much more and they are volunteering, which takes time away from their own families in order to be there for our community,” Mayor Kent Muench said. “On top of everything else, their community involvement is amazing. When people call them, the response they receive is anything but a volunteer level, it is professional, supportive and very helpful. As a community, we should be very thankful that they are here.”

Local resident Donna Pawluk experienced firsthand just how the local fire department steps up for their community. When the smoke detectors in her home began beeping, she immediately thought to change the batteries, however only one required batteries, and the others were hard wired into the home. The beeping continued, and Pawluk thought that she would call the fire department for some advice on what the issue could be. During the phone call, the member on duty not only provided advice, but asked Pawluk for her address so he could come by and check the detectors. “He came to the house and looked over all of the detectors. He showed me that the one in my basement was expired and explained what kind it was, and where to go to get a replacement. He was very helpful, had a great demeanour and told me that I did the right thing by calling,” Pawluk explained. Not being aware to check for expiry dates, Pawluk was grateful that the time was taken to go over details with her and that despite being embarrassed about having a member of the fire department come to her house for such a “small issue” in her mind, he put her mind at ease. “He told me that he would rather come and help with this rather than come in the event of a fire.

I learned a lot from the visit, things I didn’t know before and I felt really good after he left.”

Each member truly believes in serving their community, not just in emergency situations, but also for community events, local organizations, schools and more. “We try to help the community out as much as possible and we try to make ourselves as visible as possible within reason in the community without stretching our members too far,” Brooman explained. It is not uncommon to see members of the MFD working at pancake breakfasts and BBQ’s at the local schools, tossing candy from the firetrucks during the annual Buster Days parade, organizing and distributing food hampers to local families at Christmas time, and at other local events. This year, the MFD hosted the FireFit Challenge, which took place the same weekend as Buster Days and brought a large amount of visitors to the area as participants and spectators.

Operations for the Martensville Fire Department are funded through the City of Martensville and through minor fundraising, the department uses additional funding to put towards education and occasional equipment purchases. “We are well supported by the City.

We have great equipment and the City has been extremely supportive of us,” MFD Fire Chief Kurtis Dyck said. Currently, the MFD consists of 31 members, and has responded to approximately 250 calls this year.

Be sure to stop in at the Martensville Fire Hall on October 10th for the Fire Prevention Week Open House and take a moment to thank our members for all of the hard work that they do for this community.

Many of us have been impacted directly by the care provided by these dedicated individuals who help people through some of the worst moments of their life. Their kindness, compassion and professionalism are second to none and Martensville is lucky to have them.

First Ever Trailer Race at Wyant Group Raceway Proves to Be a New Fan Favorite Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

Wyant Group Raceway held their last race of the year on Sunday, September 30th and fans were not disappointed. The racing kicked off at 2pm and the day’s events included the annual Enduro, Run Your Junk, Street Stocks and the first ever TRX RV Trailer Race.

The Trailer Race proved to be a fan favorite as racers sped around the track and complete mayhem broke out on the track. With sparks flying, smoke filling the air, and screeching tires that could be heard for miles, the highly entertained fans were on their feet cheering. Racers began the race with a trailer attached to each vehicle; however by the end, boats, trailers and parts of vehicles littered the raceway. Drivers could be seen having the time of their lives as they bumped into one another and drove straight into the scattered items on the track, just for some added entertainment.

There were some blowouts this week in the CFL and it all started on Friday with the Calgary Stampeders and Toronto Argonauts. The game was 14-10 for Calgary at the half and then the Stamps came alive. The only points the Argo’s could muster in the second half was a rushing TD with two seconds left in the game, and at that point it was much too late. The Stamps improved to 11-2 this season with a 38-16 win.

On Saturday, the blowouts got even worse. Hamilton came out firing, scoring 20 points in the first quarter on route to a 40-10 bashing of the BC Lions. The win improves Hamilton’s record back to an even 7-7, just one win behind the RedBlacks for first in the East. Game two on Saturday saw the Edmonton Eskimos offence completely fail in a brutal 30-3 loss to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. Mike Reilly was held to 164 yards, no TD’s and two interceptions. The loss moves the Eskies to 4th place in the West, while Winnipeg jumps into 3rd.

The final game of the week was actually a close one! Montreal Alouettes quarterback Johnny Manziel threw for his first CFL touchdown against the Saskatchewan Roughriders but it wasn’t enough for a win. The Riders lengthened their lead on second place in the West with a 34-29 win and Saskatchewan improving their record to 9-5 on the season. After a perfect 4-0 week my picks are 40-21 this year through 16 weeks. My winning picks for week 17 are Winnipeg, BC, Calgary, and Saskatchewan.

October is here and that means the NHL is back in full swing! One of the most anticipated teams this season in the Toronto Maple Leafs. They already had a strong team last year that fell to Boston in the first round of playoffs but with the addition of John Tavares from the New York Islanders the Leafs could be a Stanley Cup contender.

The other Canadian team with a lot of promise is the Winnipeg Jets. They were victims of the Vegas Golden Knights in the Western Conference final last year and have a very good chance of making it there again in the 2018-19 season.

Take Precautions Against Ticks – Even In Cool Weather

Saskatchewan people are advised to continue to take precautions against tick bites when spending time outdoors.

The black-legged ticks that can carry a bacteria that causes Lyme disease are rare in this province, but are most active in the cooler months of October, November and April.

Hunters, hikers and anyone else enjoying the outdoors should take simple precautions before going into grassy, bushy or treed areas. Use insect repellent containing DEET. Check yourself, your children and your pets afterwards. If any ticks are found, they should be carefully and promptly removed with tweezers.

“In Saskatchewan, the risk of being exposed to Lyme disease is low, but not zero,” Deputy Chief Medical Health Officer Dr. Denise Werker said. “Less than half a per cent of ticks found here are the black-legged ticks that can be infected with the bacteria that causes Lyme disease, and only a small percentage of those may be infected.”

Martensville Schools Reflect on Residential Schools by Participating in Orange Shirt Day Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

Orange Shirt Day was held in Saskatchewan on September 30th as a way to take a moment to think about residential schools. “There is an opportunity around Orange Shirt Day for reflection to occur regarding residential schools,” said Dr. Shawn Davidson, SSBA president. “We need to keep building understanding about this shared history.” This day of recognition is part of a larger movement within the country to provide an opportunity for First nations, governments, schools and communities to unite in a spirit of reconciliation and hope for generations of children to come.

“Orange Shirt Day is an opportunity to honour the residential school students and acknowledge their experiences,” Deputy Premier and Education Minister Gordon Wyant said. “We want to ensure that all Saskatchewan people take the time to understand the impact of residential schools.”

Orange Shirt Day was first proclaimed in Saskatchewan in 2016, in response to a resolution passed by the province’s trustees at the SSBA Spring General Assembly. The Orange Shirt Day movement is a legacy of the St. Joseph Mission residential school commemoration event held in Williams Lake, B.C., in 2013. It grew out of the account of a young girl having her new orange shirt taken away on her first day of school at the mission. The date was chosen, as this was typically the time of year when children were taken from their homes to residential schools, as well this creates a discussion in schools about anti-racism and anti-bullying policies for ABOVE: Proud to Wear Orange – In a continuing effort to instill the Trust and Reconciliation the school year.

Martensville schools took the time theme and knowledge base of VMS students the entire school took part in Orange T Shirt Day on Friday Sept 28th . Pictured is Mrs. Wood-Englot’s Grade 4 classroom. to honour this movement on September 28th and encouraged staff and students to don an orange shirt that day. Martensville High School took to Facebook to state that by participating in this day, it gives the schools a chance “to create meaningful discussion about the effects of residential schools and the legacy that they have left behind, as well as to recognize our roles in the reconciliation efforts.”

ABOVE: VHS had our Knights in Action leadership group run the assembly as we watched an online book about Treaties and listened to Phyllis's story about how orange shirt day was started in Williams Lake BC and learned about the affects of the Residential schools and how her brand new orange shirt was taken from her as a little girl at the age of 6. We also enjoyed listening to our Grade 2-5 choir sing the Spirit of the Sun for us. It was a great day for learning and reflecting for all students. Many of the staff purchased orange t-shirts with the logo "Every Child Matters" symbol on the front.

He left a legacy at Martensville High School and had plans of continuing his future going to university and playing hockey. This fundraiser is to raise money to continue his legacy and help others pursue their dream of post-secondary education in the form of a scholarship presented by the Martensville High School.
