Prairie Sky Chamber of Commerce Preparing For Business Summit

The Prairie Sky Chamber of Commerce (PSCC) has had a busy year and things aren’t slowing down just yet. On Tuesday, October 1st, the PSCC announced that the six open positions for their Board of Directors have been filled. The positions were for a two-year term and voting took place from September 21-25.

This was the first election that has taken place since the Warman and Martensville Chambers of Commerce amalgamated in 2017. A total of eight nominees came forward, and according to PSCC Executive Director Jaimie Malmgren, it was a very close election. Following the AGM, the PSCC Board of Directors will be busy planning their newest event, the Ignite Excellence Business Summit, which will be taking place on Thursday, November 7th at the Brian King Centre in Warman from 8:30am – 3:30pm. This event is designed to connect business leaders with entrepreneurs while providing them with tools they need to succeed. “This is a brand new event and was something that we decided to do because of the fact that there are so many new and young businesses within our region. As a Chamber, we thought that if we could connect business experts and mentors

with the business community, that would help strengthen the overall business climate within our region,” Malmgren explained.

There will be a variety of speakers that will be providing information to those attending, which will begin with Carolyn Chow of SmartHire who will discuss Workplace Culture and how to attract and retain employees.

Next will be the keynote speaker Doug Griffiths, author of “13 Ways to Kill Your Community” who will talk about change. “Doug will be talking about as a business and as a community or any organization, the importance of being adaptable to change and willing to change so you can always stay current and relevant,” said Malmgren. Lunch will follow and then there will be an opportunity to learn about “Insights and Lessons Learned from Local Trail Blazers”, where three business owners will talk about their entrepreneurial journey and share some of their experiences.

“Following that will be a professional panel that will be all around igniting business growth and as a business, what sort of things you can have in place in order to set that solid foundation,” added Malmgren. The last presentation of the day will be from Travis Low and Ricky Forbes of Blue Moose Media, who will be discussing the “Top 5 Tips for Marketing Your Business on Social Media”.

There is an opportunity for sponsors for the event to have an exhibit booth, so during breaks attendees can stop in and get some expert advice. “These people have a lot of experience, so if you are looking at sustainability, growth, getting advice, anything, it is a great opportunity to come and network and gain some knowledge. We are really excited about this event.”

The PSCC has been seeing a steady growth of new members and continues to gain more and more exposure within the region. “We have had new events taking place and some large events such as WMBEXA that has been gaining in popularity each year. It is really nice to see the membership continue to grow and people seeing the value of belonging to the Chamber and having that network and organization behind you if you have any challenges or anything like that.”

The Chamber hosts regularly scheduled informative breakfasts and luncheons that are open to anyone to attend, as well as numerous events throughout the year such as the Martensville 19101BS1 Business Expo, Warman, Martensville & Region Business Excellence Awards Gala (WMBEXA), and more. This past September, they met with local business owners to discuss the results of their ‘Love What’s Local’ survey. The survey was set up as a way to hear back from the residents within the region and find out what they felt businesses could do to encourage more local spending. “We

revealed the information that we got back and it was quite eye opening. The business owners that were in attendance and the City representatives that attended were very engaged. We learned more about what we as businesses and as communities and cities can do to keep that daytime population here because if people are here, they are going to spend more locally.”

To help prevent a sewer backup, be mindful of what goes down the drain. Your pipes are not built to handle most food items and will almost always cause a blockage in the short or long term. When in doubt, properly dispose of these items by throwing them away.

Members attended and a group was having a Karaoke evening in the garage. As much as our members enjoy a good evening of Karaoke, the party was advised it was a little too loud and disturbing and needed to quiet down for the evening.

Returning Your Waste and Recycle Bins to Your Property- Waste Bylaw

Residents are reminded to return waste and recycle bins to their properties and off the street after bins have been picked up. Bins should be placed in front of the premises by 7AM of the morning of collection day. Bins left on the street are potentially subject to damage caused by wind or traffic. Bins left on the street also interfere with local traffic, street parking as well as street sweeping or utility maintenance. Per the local bylaw, any person failing to adhere to the bylaw may be subject to fines.

Attention Hunters: Key Wildlife Management Zones Targeted For CWD Testing

The Ministry of Environment – in partnership with the Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation (SWF) – is encouraging hunters to submit the heads of all deer, moose, elk and caribou harvested this hunting season for Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) testing. CWD is a fatal, infectious central nervous system disease in cervids that has no known cure.

In particular, hunters in wildlife management zones (WMZs) 9, 10, 2W, 35 and 37 are strongly urged to submit all mule deer and white-tailed deer heads for testing. Longterm monitoring sites are being established in these zones to obtain more information about the presence and spread of the disease in certain areas of the province. The ministry is hoping to collect at least 300 samples in each of these targeted zones to more accurately assess changes in the disease and help guide future management options.

The ministry is also looking for submissions in the boreal transition zone to help evaluate CWD risk to caribou (WMZs 43, 47, 48, 49, 50, 53, 54, 55, 56, 57 and 67).

“Hunters play an important role in supporting wildlife health, and submitted more than 2,000 heads for CWD testing last year,” Environment Minister Dustin Duncan said. “Understanding how this disease spreads is critical in evaluating potential population impacts, and in developing disease management plans.”

“The Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation will manage a number of drop-off sites this year to help augment the ministry program,” SWF Executive Director Darrell Crabbe said. “Monitoring CWD in the province is beneficial for hunters, and an important indicator in managing our wildlife resources.”

CWD was discovered in provincial game farm animals in 1996. It transitioned to wild mule deer in 2000, and is now found in deer, elk and moose in 48 of Saskatchewan’s 83 WMZs. With the help of hunters, the ministry has been monitoring the spread and intensity of CWD for more than 20 years.

Hunters can help reduce the spread of CWD to new areas of the province by properly disposing of animal carcass waste. It is best to field dress and quarter the carcass in the field instead of transporting it from the area where the animal was taken, especially from areas where CWD has been detected.

Although no human case of CWD has ever been identified, the ministry strongly recommends that hunters avoid eating the meat until they receive their test results. In addition, hunters are strongly urged not to eat, or distribute for human consumption, the meat or other parts from animals that are found to be CWD-positive.

Prior to dropping off heads, please get your CWD Tracking Number and keep that number with you. Heads can be submitted for testing at a number of designated drop-off locations across the province throughout the hunting season. Martensville has seen a number of new businesses open throughout the years; however, one type of business that the community was lacking was a casual clothing store.

Cole Flath took it upon himself to change that.

Alpyne Apparel is currently in their fourth week of operation at their new location at 800 Centennial Drive North. The business had been utilizing that space for the past two years as a warehouse facility, but as the need for more product grew, the space required to house the product grew as well. “When things first started, I was using my home as a storage space, which I outgrew quickly. I then moved into this location and had a small area which kept growing, so I decided to make a store out of it and combine the best of both worlds. I have always wanted to open a store front, and now that it is a reality, it is pretty exciting,” Flath stated. The new storefront has proven to be quite popular with local residents, with Flath noting that things pick up in the evenings and on weekends quite a bit.

The idea for this business began with a much smaller expectation. Flath had purchased his first home and began a small T-shirt business that he could use to write off some of the in-home bills. From there, things grew quickly and currently, Alpyne Apparel product is being sold out of 300 stores throughout Canada, as well as 40 Lids retail locations in the country.

Flath’s love of the mountains, where he visits frequently to take part in snowmobile adventures, was where the idea behind the business was born. “I never expected this to become what it has, but I am really happy with where things are. It was a great opportunity to open an outdoor clothing store in Martensville and fill that gap in the community.”

Walking into the store, you are immediately welcomed into a warm, bright location with a wide array of clothing options for everyone. Flath explained that they were previously focused on more of a uni-sex line of products; however, they are starting to bring in more women specific items. There is also a plan to bring approximately 3 to 4 more brands into the store prior to Christmas. For customers that are interested in seeing a specific brand being offered at Alpyne Apparel, there is a suggestion box available instore. “We take a good look at all of the requests we receive and if it is an option, we will definitely look at bringing it into the store to carry.”

Flath was proud to recently announce that Alpyne Apparel became the exclusive Traeger grills and products dealer in Martensville. “This has been a really popular addition to the store. A lot of people are really happy to have this available to them within the community.”

Not only does Alpyne Apparel have a wide variety of clothing available, but they also do custom clothing orders for businesses, sports teams, groups and individuals.

Providing options such as vinyl printing, screen printing, embroidery, twill work, patches and more, Flath explained that they are able to offer their customers a great quality item at an affordable rate. “Because we order so much through the business, we can offer our customers a really good price on custom clothing, so they can get a really great product at a really great price,” said Flath. Samples of available items can be found in store. Currently, they have their printing done out of Saskatoon; however, now that the new storefront is in place, it is only a matter of time before they will be doing their own printing in-house.

THIS WEEK IN SPORTS

After a perfect 4-0 week this is not how I wanted to continue with my picks.

Week 16 in the CFL started on Friday with a game that I assumed would be close and since the Winnipeg Blue Bombers were 6-0 at home it looked like they would have the edge. I was completely wrong on this one as the Bombers got thumped at home by the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. A 17-point second quarter put the game out of reach and another TD in the fourth quarter was the final nail in the coffin as the Ti-Cats rolled to a 33-13 win over the Bombers.

Things started to look up for me on Saturday when game one of the tripleheader saw the Edmonton Eskimos hand Ottawa their 7th straight loss. It’s weird to look back and see that Ottawa started the season 2-0 with wins against Calgary and Saskatchewan before winning just ONE of their next 12 games!

Game two on Saturday had the Toronto Argonauts looking like their old selves again and not in a good way. Saskatchewan trampled the Argos in a 41-16 win that clinched a playoff spot for the Riders.

The final game of the week was the one that surprised me the most as the BC Lions won their third straight with a close 25-23 victory over Montreal. Perhaps I should have saw this coming after it was announced that Alouettes QB Vernon Adams Jr. would serve a one game suspension and not play in the game. The Al’s did make things interesting with a late fourth quarter TD to make it a 2-point game, but they couldn’t muster any offence after that.

After the dust settled this week the playoff picture was made clearer as Hamilton clinched a spot in the East, and Calgary, Saskatchewan, and Winnipeg all clinched in the West. The log jam at the top of the West has the Stamps, Riders and Bombers all tied at 18 points but Calgary is on top due to their record against the Riders and the Bombers are in third because they’ve played one more game than both Calgary and Saskatchewan.

With five weeks to go in the season there is still a lot to be settled. My picks were 2-2 last week which brings my season up to 42-19. My picks for Week 17 are Hamilton, Calgary, Saskatchewan, and BC.

Royals Came to Play!

It was the annual Thursday Night Lights game on September 26 as the Royals hosted their rivals the Delisle Rebels under the lights. It was their home opener and the rainy weather did not deter fans as they came out to cheer on their hometown Royals. The Pep Band started things off as they played O Canada to get things rolling. The Royals were coming off a win in Delisle from last week and came into the game with a 3-0 record. They were looking to keep the streak going.

Both defenses kept the points off the board until early in the second quarter. Rebel QB, Max Major connected with Tyler Sanders in the endzone to put the Rebels on the board 6-0. The point after was unsuccessful. The Royals answered back at the end of the second when Royals’ QB Aidan Kliewer handed the ball off to Kody Gutek who ran it in for the major.

The point after was good and Royals took the lead 7-6. The Royals were not done before half and with only 0.4 seconds left on the clock, running back Brody Nelson added to the lead with the touchdown making it 13-6 at the half.

The wet field conditions led to fumbles by both teams and the Royals pushed the Rebels deep in their zone early in the third. The rebels elected to give up the safety making it 15-6. With only 3:45 left in the third Gutek took the handoff and ran 53 yards for the major making it 22-6. The Royals defense forced a rebel QB fumble and the Royals recovered the ball on Delisle’s 45-yard line. That series did not mount to anything but early in the fourth, Nelson carried the ball for the teams 4th major giving them the 29-6 lead.

The Rebels recovered another Royal fumble and Carson Huber took the handoff for the 25 yard major closing the gap 29-13. This did not keep the Royals down as Nelson returned the kickoff untouched for their 5th touchdown on a 65-yard run making it 36-13. Rebel QB, Major would connect one last time with Austin Gramson to make the final 36-20 keeping the Royal’s streak alive at 4-0.

Special teams were working well for the Royals as Nelson, Gutek and Fraser all had great runs for good yardage. Coach Evanisky is very happy with the squad this year.

He commented, “We are pretty balanced all around”, when describing his team. They can capitalize on both the passing and running game. “Luckily, when it’s cold and wet, our O-line and running backs can carry the load”, commented Evanisky. He also has the option of QB Aidan Kliewer finding receivers, Kyler Fraser and Dawson Lennea. The team travels to North Battleford next week. Coach Evanisky would like to see his Royals limit penalties and work on not missing assignments on offense and defense. Defensive coordinator Carter Dyck likes the improvement he’s seen in the defense. “Tristan Towsen and Shamus Sawatsky took a lead role this game and rookie captain Brody Dyck had a good game on the d-line”, commented Coach Dyck.

Next home game for the Royals is October 10 when Humboldt comes to town. Game time is 4:00 so come and cheer on your Royals.

Dedication From MCRP Makes a Difference For Martensville & Surrounding Area

The Martensville Community Recreation Project (MCRP) first came together in 2013 following a hockey meeting where the need for another ice surface was discussed. “After the meeting, a group of individuals came together to sit down and we started planning how we could make this dream a reality,” MCRP Chairperson Jesse Reis said.

The group began with approximately 10 people and has since grown to 15 members; however, they are always looking for new volunteers to come on board and help with the organization of their five fundraising events that are held each year; street hockey tournament, TUFF Run, 3 on 3 tournament, 80’s cabaret and their hockey draft. Those interested in joining the MCRP can visit www.mcrp.ca.

“We have worked closely with the City of Martensville on this project and we even have Council members on our committee now too. They have been instrumental with the project as they have committed $6.5 million to go towards the new facility,” added Reis.

Although much money has been raised throughout the past five years, there are still funds needed in order to bring it to fruition. The MCRP themselves have raised an incredible $300,000 through events they have organized and donations from people and businesses in Martensville and the surrounding area.

“The MCRP have provided the vision, energy and momentum for this multipurpose facility project. By having a group like this form, organize and be so active in putting in real time, to dedicate real dollars says so much.

They believe this project is going to be such a benefit and legacy for the community, a community the MCRP is proud to be a part of,” Dillon Shewchuk, City of Martensville Community Economic Development Manager stated.

Shewchuk also noted that having an active partner like the MCRP involved, it makes this project a priority. “As a community, it shows that we do have capacity to do positive things and we can shape what happens here and we are not always reliant on outside sources or influences on what happens in Martensville.” With the money that the group has raised to date, Shewchuk states that “those

dollars are important as it has helped put this project in motion and will help leverage additional dollars.”

Recently, the group wrapped their annual 3 on 3 tournament for ages 6-18, which brings in over 400 athletes from Martensville and surrounding areas. “We have a big draw from throughout the region for the three week tournament. It is a great warm up for hockey season and all proceeds from the event go towards helping the MCRP. We find that it has been growing each year and it has become a really well run event,” Reis explained. Participants agree, which is why the slogan for the tournament is ‘Best Organized Shinny Around’.

The 3 on 3 tournament is one of the biggest fundraisers the group hosts; however, they haven’t forgotten the adults of Martensville. On October 26th, the MCRP will be hosting their 80’s cabaret at the North Ridge Community Centre. This fun-filled evening will consist of a late lunch and the band Stuck in the 80’s. Tickets are $25 and can be purchased via their website. “One of the things that we are really proud of is not just raising the funds, but holding events that can bring people together in the community. It is a great way to meet new people and come out to have a great time.”

It is no secret that there is a great need for a new sports facility, not just for the residents of Martensville, but for the entire region. “All of the communities in the area are growing and it is tougher to find ice surface. One of the things that we ask is that people help spread the word about the importance of the need for this facility and if they have opportunities to talk to businesses about contributing, contact their local government by writing letters and share information with your friends and family about who we are, what we do and the events that we host. Spreading the word any way they are able to can help make this dream a reality. It is coming, our city is committed, and now it is just about getting different levels of commitment,” added Reis.

Reduction Council has helped to put on a Repair Café in Saskatoon with great success last October. Prince Albert is home to a more regularly scheduled Repair Café and Regina has seen success at these events before in the past as well.

The Martensville event is currently looking for repair experts that enjoy sharing their knowledge with their neighbors to volunteer. “What we are most in need of is someone to be our local host. They are there on the day of the event to help set up and take down, as well as find local repair experts,” SWRC Communications Coordinator Naomi Mihilewicz said. The host/hostess will provide coffee and tea, welcome visitors and serve as a contact point for both visitors and repairers in the Repair Café.

Some of the areas of expertise that the Repair Café would be looking for include: - One or two people great at sewing repairs who can bring a sewing machine - One or two people great at small electronic repairs who can bring a soldering iron and solder, a circuit tester and an assortment of small screws - One person good at repairing wooden items who can bring a drill, bits and wood screws - One person good at gluing and clamping who can bring elastic bands and clamps

There is no need to register for the event; however, you are required to stay with your item while it is being repaired, which also provides the opportunity to “learn a little in the process,” Mihilewicz added.

Coach McGuire Looking Forward to Another Great Volleyball Season Jocelyn Ottenbreit, Martensville Messenger

The Martensville High School volleyball team consisting of grade 10 – 12 girls played in Hanley this past weekend. The teams that participated were Colonsay, Kenaston, and Aberdeen. They were undefeated in the round robin other than losing one game to Kenaston and went on to win the final against Hanley. “They played very well as a team and had a lot of fun hanging out together,” said Coach Deb McGuire.

McGuire added that this year’s team is looking like it has huge potential. “I’m enjoying these girls, they are learning fast and very equally rounded as a team. I’m carrying 15 girls and they are all pretty equal with their skills and I’m having a great time with them.”

Reaction to Trudeau’s Missteps Puzzling

Andrew Scheer’s Conservatives are likely frustrated they aren’t pulling well ahead of Liberals, given recent developments in this federal election campaign. It may be telling us something about what’s now wrong with modern-day politics.

As of the writing of this column, we are two weeks into the campaign. And while opinion polls show the Conservatives hold a massive lead in Saskatchewan and Manitoba (the provinces seem to always be lumped together) they are showing Trudeau’s Liberals only two percentage points behind Scheer’s Conservatives. Given recent developments, this is surprising.

About one week ago, images were revealed of a younger Justin Trudeau wearing blackface and brownface makeup - something that surely plays into the Conservative campaign aimed at Trudeau that has suggested “he’s not ready” and “he’s never been ready.” Yet according to Poll Tracker, which takes into account the work of seven major polling companies, the Liberals have only dropped two percentage points while the Conservatives have only gained .4 per cent. The NDP are said to have gained 1.1 percent and the Green Party .9 per cent, all within the margin of error and exactly a significant gain.

Perhaps it is a bit early to expect an instantaneous change. There is still another four weeks left in this campaign and the Conservatives are only beginning to roll out new negative ads with Trudeau’s image in blackface.

Moreover, polling in this cellphone/social media age is less reliable because it’s harder to get a cross section of voters, but how this story is now playing out may speak to the divisiveness of today’s politics and how this may be changing the modern-day campaign.

If the Poll Tracker numbers are telling us anything, it’s that the Conservatives seem to be gaining the least from the Trudeau revelations - less than half of what the NDP and Greens appear to have gained. Maybe it’s telling us that voters are remarkably forgiving for youthful indiscretions. But Trudeau was a 29-year-old teacher at the time, so it was hardly a youthful indiscretion.

Moreover, Trudeau’s personal approval rating has taken a severe hit over this. According to the same polls, Scheer has not soared past Trudeau as the most preferred leader.

Yet Scheer’s Conservatives seem to have gained little.

Why?

Well, it’s likely telling us that voters are entrenched in their views of the parties that they generally support and that they see other issues as larger priorities.

There are a lot of you out there that may be bothered by this. You likely should be. It’s a non-starter for anyone and especially Liberals - to try to justify what Trudeau did.

That said, it’s hard to single out staunch Liberals for having an irrational, unflinching view of Trudeau and Liberal policies when Conservatives and New Democrats pretty much take the same approach. Parties that are only focused on “their issues" while not properly addressing other issues, is a big problem in today’s politics.

For example, the Conservatives are clearly doing well in their western base because of their opposition to the carbon tax and they do have a very strong argument that Trudeau’s version of the carbon tax won’t reduce greenhouse gas emissions, but by not being more adamant in stating that Conservatives accept that globe warming is a manmade problem and by not promoting stronger policy positions to deal with this serious problem, it’s quite likely the Conservatives are driving away votes.

Those votes are being entrenched in other parties in the same way Trudeau’s unflinching, uncompromising pursuit of this carbon tax is likely solidified Conservative support. It’s a big country where opinions and priorities do vary greatly, but that today’s national parties can’t seem to string together solid, compromised national platforms is troubling.

Still Growing Strong: Saskatchewan’s Population Tops 1,174,000

More people are living in Saskatchewan than ever before, as the province’s population grew to 1,174,462 as of July 1, 2019, according to new figures released by Statistics Canada.

Saskatchewan’s population has now grown in 53 consecutive quarters, increasing by more than 183,000 people during that time.

Immigration and Career Training Minister Jeremy Harrison said a growing province creates opportunities for Saskatchewan people and provides the resources needed to support important government services.

“As we get ready to enter the 2020s, our government is planning for another decade of strong growth in Saskatchewan,” Harrison said.

“This fall, we will release a new growth plan for the new decade, with new growth targets and actions we will take to achieve those targets.”

Saskatchewan grew by 3,435 people in the second quarter of 2019. A net increase of 4,510 people from international migration and a natural increase (births minus deaths) of 1,644 people was partially offset by net interprovincial outmigration of 2,719 people.

Martensville Schools Participate in Orange Shirt Day

Schools in Martensville took part in Orange Shirt Day on Monday, September 30th. This movement officially began in 2013; however, the story behind the movement goes back much further. In 1973, six-year-old Phyllis Webstad received a brand new orange shirt that her grandmother had purchased for her to wear on her first day of school. Webstad was headed to the St. Joseph Mission Residential School, outside of Williams Lake, BC. The young girl was raised by her grandmother and new clothes were a rarity; however, the new shirt was quickly taken away and replaced with the school’s institutional uniform.

Webstad attended the school for a year but the experience changed her life forever.

In an article on the Indigenous Corporate Training Inc. blog, Webstad states, “I finally get it, that feeling of worthlessness and insignificance, ingrained in me from my first day at the mission, affected the way I lived my life for many years. Even now, when I know nothing could be further than the truth, I still sometimes feel that I don’t matter.”

The purpose of this day is to remind ourselves that “Every Child Matters” and to encourage Canadians to come together in the spirit of healing and reconciliation. Indian residential schools operated across Canada between 1831 and 1996. In its comprehensive report in June 2015 on the residential school policy, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada declares "establishment and operation of residential schools were a central element of this policy, which can best be described as “cultural genocide.”

The date of September 30th was chosen as that was the time of year that trucks and buses would come to communities to “collect” the children and deliver them to their harsh new reality of cultural assimilation, mental and sexual abuse, shame and deprivation.

Throughout the time that residential schools operated, it is estimated that 150,000 children attended the schools and over 6,000 children died while attending these schools (a number based on partial federal government records).
