Family Friendly Halloween Fun at the MAP Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

Martensville families were invited to take part in some Halloween fun at the Martensville Athletic Pavilion (MAP) on October 25th from 6pm-8pm. Approximately 250 people attended the event, which included a bouncy house, face painting, games, a costume contest, races, crafts, a DJ and much more. Tickets were $5/person or $15/family (maximum of 5).

This annual event has been taking place since 2016 and this year saw an increase in attendance compared to last year. “In total, we had approximately 150 kids come out and take part. Everyone had a great time and we feel like there was something there for everyone,” Jessica Loran, City of Martensville Program Coordinator II said.

Kids that attended went home with a treat bag filled with goodies, including a youth pass to the MAP for those over 5 years old, as 5 and under are free.

For a different idea this Halloween, the City of Martensville is offering local residents a chance to purchase youth passes to the MAP for $2 until October 30th. “It is a great option to hand out this Halloween. It helps kids get active and is a nice alternative to sweet treats that everyone gets,” Loran added.

Water Meter Read/Estimate Schedule Starting – October 2019- May 2020

Between the months of October and May, the City puts in place an alternating schedule that includes meter reading for half of the City.

The alternating schedule is in place during these months due to extra time required to complete city-wide, month to month meter reads. Changes to seasonal staffing, colder temperatures, inclement weather, higher priority maintenance issues in cooler seasons, are all contributing factors in encouraging residents to provide their own meter reading.

October- North will have meters estimated, South will be read and residents should submit their readings to City Hall.

November- South Estimated or Submitted, North reads December- South reads, North estimated or submitted January- South estimated or submitted, North reads February- South reads, North estimated or submitted March- South estimated or submitted, North reads April- South reads, North estimated or submitted May- South estimated or submitted, North reads WHY SHOULD YOU PROVIDE US YOUR METER READ? Your water bill will be based on actual consumption preventing you from being over billed or under billed. Days of usage may be higher when an estimate is used resulting in higher billing. A water meter read will ensure accuracy. Estimates are based on prior usage, including summer months where water usage is typically higher. Actual water use in winter months will likely be lower resulting in a lower actual bill.

The second last week in the CFL only figured out one more spot in the 2019 playoffs. The Winnipeg Blue Bombers will finish third and not host a playoff game but it is still to be decided on who they will be facing.

The Bombers started former Roughrider (and former Argo although he never played a game for Toronto) Zach Collaros at quarterback last weekend and he led Winnipeg to a 29-28 win over the Calgary Stampeders.

Calgary QB Bo Levi Mitchell threw for 350 yards and four TDs but was shut out in the fourth quarter allowing the Bombers to come back and score a walk-off field goal with no tie left on the clock.

The loss for Calgary meant that their hopes for hosting the West Final fell into the hands of the Roughriders. Saskatchewan would need to lose at least one of its final two games for Calgary to claim top spot.

The Riders have their own plans of hosting the West Final in Regina and they got just a little bit closer with a 27-24 win over Edmonton on Saturday.

Another last play, walk-off field goal for the Riders made the checklist for first place a little shorter as they now just need to win their final game of the season against Edmonton.

If Saskatchewan loses to the Eskies next week then they would need a Calgary loss in order to host the West Final. There were also two other games in the CFL last weekend that had no playoff implications as the Toronto Argonauts hammered Ottawa 39-9 and the Hamilton Tiger-Cats set a franchise record with their 14th win of the season after beating Montreal 38-26.

My picks were about four seconds away from being perfect but the Calgary loss was the only blemish on my record this week as I went 3-1 which improves my record to 54-23 on the year with one week to go before playoffs.

My final regular season picks are Montreal, Calgary, Edmonton, and Hamilton.

Warman RCMP received a call on Highway 305 by Warman of a two vehicle collision between a truck and a car. A 19-yearold male driver of the car was transported to hospital. Vehicles were towed and it is still under investigation.

Report of Impaired Driver Results in Charges October 26, 2019 at 5:05 p.m.

Warman RCMP received a call on Highway 16 by Langham of a vehicle driving in and out of the ditch, possibly impaired.

The MHS Royals keep their winning streak alive as they stretched their record to 7-0 on Saturday when the Nipawin Bears came to town.

They defeated Nipawin 36-7 in the quarter final playoff game as the Royals remain undefeated this season. The Royals had offensive trouble in the first as they had two fumbles and a touchdown called back but this was short lived. On the first play of the second quarter, QB Aiden Kliewer handed off to Kyler Fraser who put the Royals on the board 6-0. The 2-point convert was unsuccessful. Shortly after, Brody Nelson padded the lead as he ran in for the second touchdown. Nelson kept his momentum going in the third as he ran back a kick-off to make it 19-0 Royals after the third quarter.

Kliewer switched to the passing game in the 4th and connected with Kyler Fraser for a 25yard pass and touchdown making it 26-0. Dawson Lennea found the endzone on another Kliewer pass and lengthened the lead 33-0. The offense did not stop there as they marched the ball down the field one more time to give kicker Christopher Laughren good field position to make the field goal putting them at 36-0. The defense held the Bears off the scoreboard until late in the fourth when #20 Gennes Mak ran the length of the field for the Bears only score of the game. They converted to make the final 36-7.

“Turn overs on offense forced us to have a slow start again but weather was a bit of an issue,” commented Coach Evanisky. He commented how they switched to their throwing game down field early in the 4th which lead to back to back touchdowns by Fraser and Lennea. “Our defense played a great game, and special teams did well hitting a field goal and running back a kick-off in the second half,” commented Evanisky. “My coaching staff did a great job preparing the players and both coordinators, Carter Dyck (Defense) and Tyson Pylypow (Offense) called great games.”

The Royals take to the field again on home turf Saturday for the semi-final against Fort Qu’Appelle.

New Zealand has plenty to offer. Mountains, beaches, penguins, Flight of the Conchords, etc. It also has a lot of drivers dedicated to tailgating and a casual contempt for tourists but still, the scenery! And nowhere in “Australia’s little buddy” was the scenery more impressive or memorable than on the Tongariro Alpine Crossing. While we found the vaunted Milford Track to be pleasant, but wildly overrated (a story for another day), Tongariro blew our expectations out of the water. And it’s not like it’s some hidden gem, it has featured on its share of lists as well over the years. It just happened to be even more amazing than we imagined.

Tongariro National Park is located right in the middle of the North Island near humongous Lake Taupo. The hike itself is renowned for its bleak scenery and colourful lakes. It was originally known simply as the Tongariro Crossing until 2007, when they decided to add “Alpine” to the name in hopes this would make unprepared, under-dressed and under-intelligent tourists take the dangers of it more seriously. A billion-dollar industry, saving dumb tourists from themselves, and rarely successful. Nonetheless, we had read plenty about the safety concerns – precarious trail, cold winds, lack of water, bumbling Aussies in board shorts – so went in ready to face whatever fickle Tongariro decided to throw at us. Which, in the end, wasn’t all that much – we got a warm, sunny day, took lots of water, managed to not fall off any cliffs and simply gave a wide berth to the shivering Aussies slurping beer out of their Camelbaks. Not that our lack of struggle did anything to reduce the enjoyment, however. We have done a lot of great day hikes over the years and, in general, the one thing that the best long-distance treks have over them is that rare and exhilarating feeling of remoteness. That’s hard to find when you can only get a single day’s walk away from a parking lot. Tongariro, however, despite the trail being thick with tourists and just a couple hours hike from a major highway in every direction, somehow made us feel like we were truly somewhere special. Someplace that was strange, and beautiful, and foreign, and maybe, just maybe, the surface of the moon.

Ok, sure, we knew it was highly unlikely we were actually on the moon. I mean, what space program would have hired that surly bus driver for a job that important? Still, there were times along the walk when it really felt like we were on a different planet. Grim and desolate, surrounded by lava rock and lakes that looked either radioactive or straight out of a children’s cartoon. One of the several other mountains besides Tongariro that feature on the hike is Mount Ngauruhoe, also known as none other than Mount Doom, from Lord of the Rings. Crossing a barren crater in silence and solitude while that massive (and active) volcano loomed over us provided one of the rarest of travel moments – a vivid experience that remains etched in your mind for years that you actually recognize as it’s happening.

Of course, cresting a steep ridge in thick fog only to have it part as if on cue, presenting us with the stunning vista of Emerald and Blue Lakes far below, ranked up there as well, not to mention the panoramic views over the surrounding plains from Ketetahi Hut, or the time I thought I lost one of my gloves, but then suddenly found it right next to the log we’d been resting on. It’s pretty simple: if you go to New Zealand, make sure you visit Tongariro.

Moe’s Post-Election Anger Unhelpful

One gets the frustrations - political and otherwise - that Westerners feel right now. Where the downturn in the oil sector coupled with the dismal fall harvest isn’t trying enough, most out here must contend with a Liberal government in Ottawa that has offered little to suggest that it has understood the depth of our problems.

Before we work ourselves into a further lather the way Premier Scott Moe and others have, some of whom are raising the spectre of Western separation, let’s explore a couple election realities.

First, it is a minority government, which is much better than a majority. Sure, there’s still much to fear about alliances with the NDP’s Jagmeet Singh that opposes pipeline development, but for a Liberal minority government that lost prairie seats on the pipeline issue; including that of long-time party stalwart Ralph Goodale in Regina-Wascana - does it make any sense to become any more aligned with the environmentalist Greens or NDP?

Do Liberals also not need to take serious stalk of the national political landscape, too? Given that the federal Finance Minister Bill Moreau was already talking the morning after the election about TransMountain going forward, it appears some in this Liberal government are already taking stalk. It takes time and patience.

Also, given that other Conservative Premiers like New Brunswick’s Blaine Higgs and even Ontario’s Doug Ford offered somewhat conciliatory tones after the most acrimonious federal election, it does seem as if others are seeking a productive way in moving forward.

It is too bad Moe wasn’t taking the same approach.

The ballots had barely been counted when issued a thunderous salvo aimed at Trudeau, demanding the newly minted minority Liberal government withdraw its carbon tax and implement a new equalization deal, but it was the tone of Moe’s missive as much as it was demands that was the problem. Moe was loud and angry. Maybe that appeals to many and wins the arguments in a bar, but it doesn’t change much after a vote.

Again, one gets the latter and one supposes now is the time to make the case; however, the most effective to make a case is a matter of “how” and “when”. With Moe raging on about how the Prairies are frustrated and angry, while perhaps accurate, is hardly an effective strategy.

The timing problem is that Moe chose a time when voters are tired and fed up with what they have been hearing for the past 40 days. If anything, Eastern voters are looking for justifications for the way they voted. Moe may have provided that for angry Westerners who voted Conservative like he did, but he also likely provided fodder for similarly frustrated easterners who may be tired about hearing about Western oil concerns when they have issues of their own.

Sure, Trudeau’s 2015 airy-fairy “sunny ways” haven’t exactly accomplished much beyond the legalization of marijuana. The Jody Wilson-Raybould/SNC-Lavalin affair clearly tarnished his reputation. So did consecutive deficit budgets, but the point is, we just had 40 days to settle such matters and we, as a nation, chose a minority government.

Two-thirds of the nation didn’t vote for the Liberals, but two-thirds of the nation didn’t vote Conservative, either.

And if we are to be a sea-to-sea country, we have to respect those in other parts of this country that might have a different view.

Regardless of the overwhelming voters for Conservatives here, it’s tough to argue that it really demonstrated it was any more of a national party than the Liberals. After all, the Conservatives got more votes in Alberta than they did in the Atlantic provinces and Quebec combined.

Really is there much to be gained by fanning the flames of Western alienation and even talk of separation the day after an election?

Government Outlines New Agenda in Throne Speech

Over the past 12 years, Saskatchewan has enjoyed a remarkable period of strong and sustained growth we hadn’t seen in a long time. As we prepare to enter the 2020s, our goal is to keep growing so all Saskatchewan people continue to benefit.

In the coming weeks, we will release a new Growth Plan with specific targets and a roadmap of how we will achieve them. These targets include 1.4 million people living in Saskatchewan and 100,000 more people working in Saskatchewan by 2030.

The fall sitting of the legislature is now underway and our government has introduced our vision for a new decade of growth. We have outlined a number of measures the government will be taking during the upcoming legislative session, including: • Creating a fund of up to $10 million to assist Estevan, Coronach and surrounding areas transition to new economic development opportunities for workers affected by the federally-mandated phase out of coal-fired electricity by 2030; • Introducing and funding a plan to reduce surgical wait times; • Introducing legislation for the regulation of vaping and vaping products; • Taking measures to improve the safety and well-being of First Nations children and reduce the number of children that need to come under the province’s care; • Opening the new Regina Bypass; • Introducing tougher penalties for cell phone usage while driving; • Continuing the constitutional challenge to the federal carbon tax in the Supreme Court; • Continuing to explore the potential for small modular reactors to produce emissions-free electricity using Saskatchewan uranium; • Implementing Clare’s Law, which allows police to disclose information that could help protect potential victims of interpersonal violence; • Introducing a new Fisheries Act to provide greater protection against invasive aquatic species; • Amending The Lobbyists Act to address recommendations made by the Registrar of Lobbyists in his recent annual reports; • Strengthening the enforcement of maintenance orders for child support payments; and • Amending The Saskatchewan Employment Act to increase parental leave by eight weeks to ensure that employees who are entitled to the new shared parental Employment Insurance benefit have job protection while using the new leave benefit and to extend employment leave to individuals who are running for election to a First Nations Band Council.

The government plans to introduce about 30 pieces of legislation during the fall sitting and will table a budget during the spring sitting that is expected to make significant investments in infrastructure.

Our government will continue to plan for a growing province by keeping our economy strong, investing in important government services and ensuring everyone in Saskatchewan continues to enjoy the benefits of growth.

New Deal with Canada Needed

The recent federal election results show that the path and policies of the federal government these past few years has divided our nation. The growing sense of frustration and western alienation is now undeniable.

Canada now has a Liberal minority government that did not receive the popular vote, has no clear mandate and will be supported by either a 4th place party that has never governed, or a party that does not want to be part of this nation.

This government also has no representation from Saskatchewan or Alberta.

In his election night address, Prime Minister Trudeau stated to Saskatchewan and Alberta: “I’ve heard your frustration. I want to be there to support you.”

Saskatchewan has made it clear: if the Prime Minister is serious about acting on his words, he can cancel the federal carbon tax; commit to negotiating a new equalization formula that is fair to Saskatchewan and Alberta; and commit to developing a plan to build pipelines and get our exports to international markets.

It’s time for a new deal with Canada. The Prime Minister says he’s heard our frustration and wants to support us – Saskatchewan stands ready to meet with him so he can prove it.

Health & Wellness Flu Season is Officially Upon Us

There is snow on the ground, and with that, flu season is officially here. Saskatchewan Health Authority is reminding people to keep themselves and their loved ones safe this flu season by getting their flu shots.

Flu shots are now available in Saskatchewan. The flu shot is available at no charge to those with a valid Saskatchewan Health Card.

Early vaccination means you are better protected. The flu vaccine is a safe, effective way to help people stay healthy, prevent illness and save lives. The flu vaccine is a safe, effective way to protect yourself and those around you during the flu season. Its effectiveness depends on the match between the vaccine strains and the influenza strains circulating in the community; and the age and the immune response of the person being immunized.

The vaccine is available through public health clinics across the province, some physician and nurse practitioner offices and in local pharmacies. Anyone 6 months and older can receive the flu vaccine. Children 0-5 years must be vaccinated at a public health clinic. When going for a flu shot, bring your Saskatchewan health card with you to receive immunization and be prepared to wait an additional 15 minutes after receiving your immunization.

Getting vaccinated is especially important for people at high-risk of influenza complications (pregnant women, young children, elderly, persons with underlying health conditions, immune-compromised) and their caregivers.

Other ways to protect yourself against influenza includes frequent hand washing, coughing and sneezing into your sleeve, cleaning surfaces often and staying home when you are sick.

A flu clinic will be held on November 4th from 2:30pm – 7:00pm at the North Ridge Community Centre in Martensville.
