Many Martensville residents’ regular patterns have been detoured lately due to construction taking place within the community, including at the intersection of Main Street and Centennial Drive. This project will include new asphalt on Centennial Drive between Main Street and 1st Street South as well as a full rebuild of Main Street between Centennial Drive and 1st Avenue including the connection of two catch basins and a trench drain to improve drainage.

One of the most recent phases of this project began on Thursday, October 17th as crews work on replacing the swales at the intersection of Main and 1st Avenue. This work created a closure of the section of Main Street from Centennial Drive to 2nd Avenue.

Once the concrete has cured, crews will finish the base work followed by paving the area. Paving of Main Street from Centennial Drive to 2nd Avenue is scheduled for October 24th.

Following the completion of the Main Street paving, crews will begin paving Centennial Drive. As of Friday, October 25th, the intersection of Main Street and Centennial Drive will be closed entirely to allow paving crews to finish paving the intersection.

During this time, there will be no access into or out of Martensville from the interchange. While the intersection is closed, drivers are asked to use alternate routes into and out of the City such as; Highway 305, Lutheran Road, or the 4th Street South ramp.

The paving of the intersection is expected to take one day and once paved, Main Street and Centennial Drive North will be open to traffic. The first block of Centennial Drive South will be paved on Saturday, October 26th. Once crews complete this work area, they will move back to the 600 block of Centennial Drive South to finish paving between 6th Street South and Chaparral Blvd.

According to City of Martensville Engineering Assistant Scott Loyns, “If weather cooperates, we’re expecting this to be completed by the end of the month.” Work will continue to be completed in phases to reduce the impact on motorists as much as possible. As the construction area and detours are changing frequently, motorists are asked to be mindful of all signage, barricades and workers as locations and traffic patterns change. “We understand that residents may be frustrated with the lack of progress on the road construction this season and apologize for these delays.

The City will continue to work closely with contractors to ensure the intersection of Main Street and Centennial Drive will be finished and opened to traffic as soon as possible.”

Approximately one year ago, Martensville residents Dustin and Lauren Blanchard decided to take on a new business venture. Dustin, who was already owner/operator of another business, and has many projects on the go, found that within his day to day operations, he was having a hard time keeping himself alert and fueled to maximize his potential. “Being a person that is sort of obsessed with coffee I was looking for a kick that could keep me going as I was dealing with my businesses.” This began the hunt for a coffee that could sustain the amount of energy needed to keep him going throughout the day and that could defeat the 2 o’clock wall that often hits in the afternoon.

Dustin began looking at various coffee brands online and found that the only coffee that had a high level of caffeine and decent quality was overpriced and came from out of country. It has been a hit and has turned into more than we even imagined,” Blanchard said.

Second Annual Bowties For Logan Event to Help Raise Funds For Local Scholarships

The second annual ‘Bowties for Logan’ fundraiser will be taking place at the North Ridge Community Centre on November 1st, 2019. This event started following the tragic accident that occurred on April 6, 2018 that changed the lives forever for so many people. Logan Schatz, captain of the Humboldt Broncos, was one of the sixteen individuals whose life was taken that day.

Schatz was a former Martensville High School student with family ties to the community. The loss of his life impacted many local residents who felt as though they wanted to do something in honour of him. Although Schatz was active in many sports and put much time into his passion, he was able to maintain honour roll marks. “He was a born leader on and off the ice. Logan’s leadership and great role model traits landed him captain on many and most teams he played for, including the Broncos,” event organizer Georjeana Christianson noted.

“Logan left a legacy at Martensville High School and had plans on continuing his future of pursuing university while playing hockey. Besides his love for hockey, was his love for friends and family. He always tried to find time to connect with friends and spend time with family. Logan had a kind soul, respect for others, and a smile and laugh that brightened every room he entered. He will always be remembered,” Christianson said.

It is because of these traits that Christianson and Bonnie Grindheim will once again be hosting the ‘Bowties for Logan’ fundraiser. Everyone that attends will receive a bow tie in honour of the bowties Schatz wore on game days. The event will feature Electric Cattle Company and Boom Box Entertainment and all money raised will continue to support Logan’s legacy by helping others pursue their dream of post-secondary education in the form of a scholarship presented at MHS annually. “We were very honoured to present this scholarship the past two years and we will continue to present two individuals with this scholarship each year.”

Water Meter Read/Estimate Schedule Starting – October 2019- May 2020

Between the months of October and May, the City puts in place an alternating schedule that includes meter reading for half of the City.

The alternating schedule is in place during these months due to extra time required to complete city-wide, month to month meter reads. Changes to seasonal staffing, colder temperatures, inclement weather, higher priority maintenance issues in cooler seasons, are all contributing factors in encouraging residents to provide their own meter reading.

Commencing October- North will have meters estimated, South will be read and residents should submit their readings to City Hall.

November- South Estimated or Submitted, North reads December- South reads, North estimated or submitted January- South estimated or submitted, North reads February- South reads, North estimated or submitted March- South estimated or submitted, North reads April- South reads, North estimated or submitted May- South estimated or submitted, North reads WHY SHOULD YOU PROVIDE US YOUR METER READ? Your water bill will be based on actual consumption preventing you from being over billed or under billed. Days of usage may be higher when an estimate is used resulting in higher billing. A water meter read will ensure accuracy. Estimates are based on prior usage, including summer months where water usage is typically higher. Actual water use in winter months will likely be lower resulting in a lower actual bill.

Celebrate Small Business Week - October 20 to 26 Local Businesses Give Back to Community in Many Ways Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

Small Business Week takes place from October 20-26 and it is important to take a moment to think about everything that local business does for the community.

Not only do these businesses provide a service to the local residents, but these are the businesses that give back to their community in many forms; whether it is through scholarships, sponsorships, financial support, in-kind donations and more.

Last year, Martensville High School graduates received over $16,500 in scholarship money and out of that

amount, $7300 was donated by local businesses. “We are extremely grateful to have donors who have been donating scholarships annually for up to 20 years. This support means the world to our grade twelve students. Postsecondary education and life after high school in general is very expensive. Opportunities such as local scholarships give students the opportunity to focus on their studies rather than working in order to cover the cost of tuition, textbooks and in some cases room & board. As our school and community continue to grow, it is our goal to have more scholarship opportunities available to students to help ease the financial burden of post-secondary education,” MHS Teacher Breanne Cooper explained.

These local businesses are also a major contributing factor when it comes to supporting local sports. Many of the local teams contact local businesses to help with fundraisers they are hosting, events they are running and many local businesses have made it possible for many of the local ball diamonds, soccer pitches, football fields, and more. The Maddog youth football team is one of the many local teams that has experienced this benefit firsthand. “The Maddog youth football program has been in existence for 16 years and could not function without the continued support of our community and our outlying communities. The annual Homecoming is so well supported with donations for our raffle table as our businesses are so willing to support us. Our winter program is also an area where we look for support and this has contributed to its success,” Janine Hayward commented.

The Martensville Community Recreation Project (MCRP) Chairperson Jesse Reis noted that their organization would not have had the success that they have without the support from many local businesses. “We have had so much support from the local business community and as we step into the next phase of the campaign to construct a new recreation facility in Martensville, the contributions from these local businesses are going to be vital in helping us reach our goal. There is no way we would be where we are without the support that we have received over the years,” Reis said. When the MCRP was first created, Reis explained that having local businesses that people were familiar with backing them, helped to add that recognition.

“When we first started our 3 on 3 tournament, if it wasn’t for that support, we don’t know if it would have even been an option. Now, five years later, it is our biggest fundraiser we hold each year.”

City of Martensville Encourages Residents to Shop Local Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

In 2019, the City of Martensville saw nine new commercial starts, which Community Economic Development Manager Dillon Shewchuk says is steady; however certainly not as rapid of growth as we were seeing five years ago. “We are still seeing lots of entrepreneurial activity; people looking to start small businesses or looking at expansion options. People are optimistic about the future.” This past year, development within the South Industrial area, located along 10th Avenue began, which Shewchuk noted is a positive area for growth as it has quick access to Highways 11 and 12.

In terms of local business support, the City of Martensville is 100% behind the Prairie Sky Chamber of Commerce when it comes to their ‘Love What’s Local’ initiative.

“Not only does something like this support local business, but it also helps on the attraction side of things because other businesses and companies that are looking for places to locate to, pay attention to how well businesses are supported by the local people. Not only that; but when local businesses are supported, that gives opportunity to potentially expand in the Proudly owned and operated in future,” Shewchuk explained.

Celebrate Small Business Week - October 20 to 26 Prairie Sky Chamber Creates Line of Communication Between Local Residents and Business Community Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

Approximately one year ago, the Prairie Sky Chamber of Commerce (PSCC) launched an initiative called “Love What’s Local” in order to help promote local business and encourage local residents to support these businesses. The initiative is also in place to help empower business owners by challenging their thinking and encouraging them to tell their story. “We felt that it was important to our area to get people more aware of all of the services that are actually available to them local,” PSCC Chair Tracey Fesiuk of Martensville Plumbing & Heating explained.

Earlier this year, the PSCC conducted a survey through the ‘Love What’s Local’ initiative and were able to learn a lot from the results. “We wanted to get opinions from our local residents on what they are looking for, why are they shopping outside of the region, what gaps are they finding within the business community, what could help encourage their businesses to stay here; whether that be through hours, services provided, products available, that sort of thing.”

Once the results of the survey were received, the PSCC went through them in depth and met with business owners in the region to share the information. “The goal is to take these results and learn how we can better encourage and support our businesses and the community as a whole by promoting the benefits of shopping local.

Local businesses want to gain your business and keep your business, so they are often open to what they can do to make your customer experience the best one possible,” Fesiuk noted.

Over the past ten years, the services provided within the region have vastly grown in variety and that is something that can be attributed to the growth that Martensville and surrounding communities have seen.

Fesiuk stated that although the population within the region has grown, many residents are commuting to Saskatoon for work each day, and therefore spending their money within Saskatoon; however, she noted that, “By having a thriving business community in the region, it attracts more business and encourages current businesses to grow, which provides more employment options for our local residents.”

On top of providing employment options, Fesiuk commented on how the businesses within the region consistently give back to their communities through support of local events, organizations, projects and more.

“A lot of what takes place in Martensville and surrounding areas wouldn’t be possible without the support of local businesses contributing through funding, participation and other forms of assistance.”

“If there is something that you do not think is available in the community, ask around, because you might be surprised just how many options there are,” said Fesiuk.

Another option is that if what you are looking for isn’t available, talk to business owners because they might be willing and able to bring in the product that you are looking for. “We have done this with our own business. We had customers that were coming in and looking for an item that we didn’t carry, so we started carrying it now. We don’t know if you don’t ask.”

The MHS Royals football team hosted North Battleford Friday as the stands were full to cheer on their team. The Royals defeated North Battleford 41-18 to become their league champions and went undefeated in league play this season with a 6-0 record. MHS took an early lead and never looked back. Their special teams brought home two touchdowns and a kickoff return in the second half. Coach Evanisky was happy with the running game. “I thought Brody Nelson, Connor Hamelin and Dylan Babecy all did well running the football. He would like to see the team more disciplined and take less penalties. He was happy that many of the younger players were able to get some playing time in the game.

The team will be working hard, watching film and preparing for their playoff game this weekend. They earned a home playoff spot as a result of their standings. Nipawin will face the Royals on Saturday at 1:00pm at Wilson Field in the provincial quarter finals. Come out and wear blue and cheer on your Royals. Congratulations to the Royals, Northwest League Champions.

Maddogs Wrap Up League Janine Hayward, Martensville Messenger

The Maddogs hosted their last league games on Sunday in Martensville, when the Titans came to town. This ended league play for both teams as they go into playoffs next weekend. The flag teams had a great season and played their last games on Saturday. Thanks to Tim Edmunds for organizing the Maddog Flag Program. The Maddog annual awards day is slated for November 17 at 11:00 in Valley Manor School. The draw was made for the Maddog Lottery and the results are posted. Special thanks to the community and all who supported our raffle this season. Without your support we cannot run our football program.

MHS Girls’ Soccer Head to Provincials

The MHS girls’ soccer team played Warman, PA Carleton, VCA and Meadow Lake in the 2019 season.

In Regionals on Saturday they beat Meadow Lake 3-0 with goals from Hayley Budnick, Isabella L'Heureux and Juliet Tate. In the second game the girls lost 4-2 to Se Se Wa Hum with goals from Kyla Hamilton and Juliet Tate. With finishing second in Regionals the team has advanced to Provincials.

The team is coached by Breanne Cooper, Kate McKinnon (who also coached the boys’ soccer team), as well as former students Emily Mann and Ciarra Thiessen.

“The girls are looking forward to strong competition in Yorkton this weekend for 4A Soccer Provincials,” said Coach Cooper.

As the CFL Season winds down there are still a few teams with lots to play for even though the playoff teams are all set. Last week got started with Montreal squeezing out a 27-24 win over the lowly Toronto Argonauts. The Argos has another one of those games where it looked like they could be a playoff contender with McLeod Bethel-Thompson throwing for 342 yards and two touchdowns. This was not the season for Toronto as they sit at 3-13 but things are definitely looking up.

Next up on Friday the injury ridden BC Lions ran into the Saskatchewan Roughriders who rolled to a 27-19 final. The win put more pressure on Calgary in the battle for top spot in the West. The Stamps were also able to get a win to keep pace with the Riders as they came back with a fourth quarter touchdown to hand the Winnipeg Bombers a 37-33 loss.

The final game of the week went as expected between the CFL’s best Hamilton Tiger-Cats and the League’s worst Ottawa RedBlacks. Ottawa suffered their 9th loss in a row and remain at the bottom of the CFL standings.

Now let’s look at the playoff picture. In the East things are locked up with Edmonton crossing over and playing Montreal with the winner heading to Hamilton to tangle with the Tiger-Cats in the East final. In the West though things are still up in the air. Calgary and Saskatchewan are still tied at the top with Winnipeg right behind. Both the Riders and Stamps have two games remaining. If both teams finish with the same record, Calgary will finish first, so Saskatchewan is hoping for a Calgary loss in the next two weeks.

However with a win the Riders can still clinch a home playoff game. Saskatchewan may have an easier schedule remaining with their finals two games coming against Edmonton while Calgary has one more against the Bombers and will close out the season against BC. Chances are we won’t know until the final games are played. It was a great week for my picks as I went 4-0 and brought my season record up to 51-22. My picks for this week are Calgary, Hamilton, Toronto, and Saskatchewan.

The Government of Saskatchewan is pleased to recognize Business Development Bank of Canada (BDC) Small Business WeekTM taking place from October 20 to 26. This week celebrates the important contributions of small businesses to the Canadian economy. Small Business WeekTM was launched 40 years ago to join together entrepreneurs from all over the country.

Small businesses are classified as having less than 50 employees and are a source of quality jobs. Since 2008, small businesses have been responsible for creating 7,253 new jobs in the province. In 2018, Saskatchewan had the highest rate of small businesses in Canada, about 129 small businesses for every 1,000 people, compared to about 110 nationally.

“Small businesses help keep Saskatchewan’s communities competitive through investment, job creation and innovation of products and services,” Trade and Export Development Minister Jeremy Harrison said. “The Government of Saskatchewan is proud to recognize this week to celebrate the contribution small businesses make to the growth of our province’s economy.”

MANUFACTURED HOMES

Small business in Saskatchewan is growing. In 2018, Saskatchewan’s small businesses employed 31 per cent of Saskatchewan workers, paying $6.3 billion in wages and salaries, which accounts for one-quarter of the province’s total payroll. Since 2008, wages paid by Saskatchewan small businesses grew the second fastest compared to other provinces. Saskatchewan’s 149,465 small businesses also contributed 24 per cent of the province’s gross domestic product in 2018.

The Government of Saskatchewan continues to invest in initiatives, services and programs that support small businesses in the province.

Some of these include: • The Saskatchewan Technology Start-Up Incentive, which offers a 45 per cent non-refundable tax credit for individual and corporate equity investments in eligible technology start-up businesses; • The Product2Market: Value Added incentive which helps support small-and-medium-sized agri-businesses, from product development through to marketing activities; • The Canada-Saskatchewan Job Grant, an employer-driven program which helps employers train new or existing workers to meet their specific workforce needs; • A small business income tax rate, at two per cent, for Canadiancontrolled private corporations. The rate applies to the first $600,000 of business income and is among the lowest in the country; • A highly competitive tax structure, which includes tax credits for research and development, as well as for manufacturing and processing equipment expenditures; and • The proclamation of the Regulatory Modernization and Accountability Act in 2013, to ultimately remove red tape that could be a road block to business, and to remove some of the barriers to growth.

Lake Vista Hosts Third Annual Fundrasier

Lake Vista School held their 3rd annual Farm to School and Toonberry fundraiser.

The students and families worked hard selling vegetable bundles for family use, as well as for donation purposes.

Hundreds of pounds of vegetables were purchased to be donated and they were divided amongst - Egadz (pictured), Ronald McDonald House, Saskatoon Food Bank and Martensville Free Pantry. Thank you Lake Vista families for your support with this fundraiser!

Lake Vista Cares Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

A group of grade six students at Lake Vista Elementary School (LVS) are working hard to inspire change, not only within their school, but in the way that they go about their day to day life. Grade 6 teacher, Meagen Giannios, and her class were the minds behind a school-wide campaign that is taking place from October 15-30 called Feelings Matter.

During this time, students and staff will be asked to do something kind for someone at least once during their day. Once their kind gesture is completed, they will record it on a sticky note, which will then be placed inside one of the letters of “CARE” that have been painted on the windows outside the school’s gymnasium. “This is an extremely important initiative so that we can build a positive community here at Lake Vista and combat bullying and negative talk. We want to make our school the best place it can possibly be by making students feel safe and feel like they matter,” Giannios explained.

The idea behind this initiative came as the class was learning about self-image in health class and discovered how the people that we surround ourselves with can have a huge impact on how we feel about ourselves. “We talked about how if we are surrounded by negative people, who put each other down or use negative language, we started to have a bad image of ourselves,” Giannios said. From there, the class discussed how far a small act of kindness such as a note can have a major positive impact on someone.

The first part of the LVS motto is “Feelings Matter – So We Care” and the class decided to use this for their campaign. They then painted big letters of “CARE” on the windows of the gym and the goal is to fill each letter with sticky notes of kind gestures such as helping someone that got hurt, tidying up without being asked, playing with their care partners and much more. “At our school, relationships are the absolute centre of everything. This goes along with us trying to establish that culture where we want people to feel safe, that they matter and that they are cared for. This is our conscious way during these 15 days to make sure that we are doing that,” Giannios added. “This is not only something for them to do during this time, but something that everyone can practice in day to day life.”
