Martensville Curling Club was host to the Mixed Doubles curling tournament this past weekend which is part of Saskatchewan’s Mixed Doubles Tour.

Tour Coordinator, Sherry Just, explained that the Saskatchewan Mixed Doubles tour started two years ago as there was no way for teams to qualify for provincials for mixed doubles in the province.

Provincials use to be open entry only so they went to Curl Sask and proposed few different options. One option was to create a tour and they were given the go ahead.

They have been collaborating with Curl Sask for this tour and are now an associate member with Curl Sk. “There have been four events the last two years plus a berth event for direct entry to Provincials. This year has been very different because of the pandemic, but they have had two events or ‘qualifying leagues’ with the pandemic, with restrictions, acting as a league. The first one was in Saskatoon several weeks ago at the Sutherland Curling Club,” said Just.

The tour events go by a point system plus Canadian mixed doubles ranking points but these are on hold right now because of the pandemic, so they have created a Provincial point system based on money earned for ‘qualifying leagues’ and based on points where people could qualify for provincials.

Teams from Saskatchewan can’t travel for sport right now so they are limited to training and playing only in Saskatchewan. Just states that, “We have seen an influx of teams playing mixed doubles because of the pandemic.”

“We usually have international teams from Australia, China, Korea, Scotland, Norway – all across the world, including Manitoba, Alberta, B.C. and Ontario, but now we are all local. It’s good for Saskatchewan in terms of building the mixed doubles sport in the province and getting the chance for more people to play in the events. We just don’t have the International teams right now, which are nice to have as well, but there will be time for that in the future. Teams are just happy to curl safely where they can.”

There were 16 teams competing in the tournament including a local ‘Remeshylo’ Martensville team. Williamson/Heather team lost to Martin/Laycock in the final. Aberdeen will play host to Provincials in February/2021.

Local Air Cadet Program Prepare For Another Year of Training Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

The 574 Dakota, Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron has been a part of Martensville and area for the past three years and since then, it has seen considerable growth.

This year as they head into training, there are approximately 40 cadets taking part in the program. “Each year we usually conduct an active recruiting drive and open house, but this year, we have relied on word of mouth to bring in cadets,” Commanding Officer Captain Davies stated.

The Air Cadet program is a youth program designed for ages 12-19 that foster physical fitness, citizenship and an interest in the air element of the Canadian Armed Forces.

The entire cadet program is a partnership between the Department of National Defence and in the case of the 574 Dakota, Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron, the Air Cadet League of Canada. “As the name implies, we focus on those interests for all aspects of the air element from interest in being a pilot, to technical work on planes, at airports and meteorology,” Davies explained.

The program is free to join and the Canadian Armed Forces provides uniforms and staff to assist in the instruction aspect of the program. According to Davies, there is a very active and supportive Squadron Support Committee that consists of dedicated parents that help with fundraising to cover much of the operating costs.

With COVID-19 having affected the majority of us, the local Cadets are no different. Due to the global pandemic, some changes were required in order to coincide with the guidelines put in place by the Saskatchewan Health Authority. The typical parade night that takes place has now been scheduled to be staggered and many of the extra-curricular programming such as band, range and biathlon have been suspended for the year.

Additionally, many of the community events that the Air Cadets typically participate in – Legion Poppy Day, Remembrance Day, Christmas Hampers, etc. have been curtailed this year, as well as the field training and flying program; although Davies noted they are working on different avenues to make these happen. “The squadron prides itself in getting involved in community events, as this is a major teaching point in helping to develop the leaders of tomorrow,” said Davies.

Council Holds Final Meeting of Current Four-Year Term Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

Martensville City Council hosted their final meeting of October this week, which also marked the final meeting for the current Council’s four-year term. “It’s hard to believe as the time seems to have passed by so quickly. I would like to thank all six councillors for their dedication, passion and knowledge that they have shared over the past four years. My work as mayor can only happen effectively when there is an environment of diversity and collaboration. I can honestly say that this was always the case. Bob, Tyson, Jamie, Darren, Deb and Mike, you should all be so very proud. Thank you,” Mayor Kent Muench posted on his Facebook page, ‘Kent Muench, Mayor of Martensville, Saskatchewan, Canada’.

An item that has been up for discussion at several past Council meetings is regarding the illuminated pedestrian crosswalk at Main and 6th Avenue South. Initially, conversation took place regarding the location in which the illuminated crosswalk should be; however, at the October 20th Council meeting, a new topic was discussed. The City of Martensville was approached by vendor ATS Traffic for a 90-day free trial for a different, more inexpensive model than was originally planned for. This new model would not require technicians to install it, and could instead be done by employees of the City of Martensville. Council appeared to be in favour of a trial period with this newly suggested model.

In the Manager’s Report to Council, Director of Recreation and Community Services Ted Schaeffer updated Council that over the next 1 to 2 weeks, there will be action taking place at the Kyle Syrenne Skatepark, as the electrical requirements for skatepark cameras has been completed and installation will take place over this time.

For those that are curious as to where Martensville’s current population sits, Covered Populations numbers up to June 30, 2020 have been updated and the City currently is listed as 11,129 people registered as living in Martensville, which is an increase of 307 people since the same time last year.

At the end of the meeting, Mayor Muench took a moment to acknowledge Council for the past four years of hard work and dedication that have been put forward by each member and presented Councillor Bob Blackwell with a token of thank you for his eight years on Council. Blackwell will not be seeking re-election this year and from the comments made by each of his peers, Blackwell will be much missed in Council Chambers.

As a reminder for Martensville residents, advanced polls for City Council voting will take place Wednesday, October 28th from 3pm-7pm, Saturday, October 31st from 10pm-2pm and Wednesday, November 4th from 3pm-7pm – all at City Hall.

Civic Services During the COVID-19 Pandemic- What You Should Know!

• Do not pour grease or cooking oil down the drain. Instead scrape out or pour cooking oil and grease into a container or plastic bag and dispose of it in your kitchen garbage.

City Hall has reopened to the public, however with some guidelines currently in place.

Continue to utilize online and contactless options when possible. Please do not visit City Hall if you are feeling unwell, experiencing flu-like symptoms or have been in contact with someone who is presumptive or tested positive for COVID-19.

• Do not dispose of large absorbent items like paper towels, diapers, baby wipes or feminine products, down the toilet, these are not items that disintegrate like toilet paper will, including “flushable” wipes. These products should be disposed of in your garbage.

Residents and Customers are encouraged to carry out transactions electronically such as online banking, preauthorized payments or TIPPS. Cheques may also be dropped off in the drop slot at City Hall.

• Kitchen garburators increase the amount of organic material in the service lines.

Depending on the condition of the service line, organic material can stick to the lines and over time cause blockages. Compost your organic material instead.

To help prevent a sewer backup, be mindful of what goes down the drain. Your pipes are not built to handle most food items and will almost always cause a blockage in the short or long term. When in doubt, properly dispose of these items by throwing them away.

Deadline for payment of Property Taxes - October 30th - The City has implemented a number of measures to assist property owners and businesses during the pandemic, including extending the Property Tax deadline from July 31st to October 30th.

2020 Property Taxes are due Friday, October 30th with interest charges on overdue accounts recommencing on November 1st.

Celebrate Small Business Week SREDA Local Link Program Aims to Help Consumers Support Local and Businesses Support Each Other Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

Saskatoon Regional Economic Development Authority (SREDA) plays a big role when it comes to business in Saskatoon and the region surrounding it. A big part of what SREDA does is to help strengthen and grow the local economy by providing programs and services in the areas of business attraction and expansion; entrepreneurship; regional economic development and planning; Indigenous economic development; economic intelligence; and marketing the Saskatoon region.

A new initiative being offered by SREDA is called Local Link, which helps consumers support local businesses within the region, as well as connecting businesses to each other. The program is designed to help consumers understand how local a company is and how locally made their products and services are. “All businesses are important to keeping our economy going, but some businesses have a bigger economic impact because they are more local – have local ownership, local suppliers and produce a local product,” Alex Fallon, SREDA President and Chief Executive Officer, states in a video located on the SREDA website, explaining Local Link.

Businesses can participate in Local Link by filling out an application online – free of charge, and with this information, they will be designated a Gold, Silver or Bronze Local Link label. By taking part in this program, it helps to encourage businesses to evaluate and potentially increase their support of the local economy. Additionally, this program offers businesses a marketing opportunity.

In order to participate, businesses must be located within the Saskatoon Region, must be registered and/or incorporated with ISC and at least one of the owners of the business must reside in the Saskatoon Region.

The Local Link program began a few months ago with nine pilot businesses taking part. “We saw all of these Shop Local campaigns and wanted to figure out just how local these businesses are, not only looking at it from a consumers perspective, but also a supplier and productions perspective,” Kristen Johannesson – Manager, Regional Economic Development and Planning with SREDA, stated.

Once companies provide their information and are assigned a Gold, Silver or Bronze standard, they receive a Local Link decal and certificate to display within their business. “The more companies that we can do that for, the more awareness the consumer will find and start to recognize the Local Link,” Baczuk said.

SREDA is working in partnership with both the Greater Saskatoon Chamber of Commerce, as well as the Prairie Sky Chamber of Commerce to help bring more awareness of this program to local businesses.

Nikkel Running For Martensville Council to Be More Involved in Community His Family Calls Home Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

Spencer Nikkel has been a resident of Martensville for approximately four years and moved here prior to the birth of his first son after him and his wife decided that this was the place that they were going to establish roots and raise their family.

Knowing that this was going to be their new home, Nikkel wanted to get involved in the community that his kids were going to be growing up in, with running for a position on Martensville City Council being one of the ways he could be more involved. “Participating on City Council is just one of the ways that I feel comfortable contributing to the future of Martensville,” Nikkel said.

In his opinion, Nikkel stated that be believes ABOVE: Spencer Nikkel that community, financial stewardship and good business environment are important to good government. “I have spent many hours volunteering, have been educated in financial planning and have been involved in business my entire life, including operating a franchise in Saskatoon and now working in the startup tech community. I believe these helped set me up well to address the needs of Martensville as we continue to grow over the coming years,” Nikkel explained.

Nikkel added that Martensville’s current growth trajectory is on a good path; however, many people within the community are spending their days working, shopping and doing activities in Saskatoon. “The more we draw professional employers to Martensville, as well as more recreation and social opportunities, the more we can build community and generate a healthier, more balanced economic centre.”

Stavenow Aims to Not Raise Taxes and Expenses If Elected Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

Matthew Stavenow moved to Martensville with his wife seven years ago, and it didn’t take them long to fall in love with the community. “My appreciation and involvement continues to grow as my family and I actively participate in various sporting and recreational programs, as well as fundraising for local causes. We also know the importance and value of supporting businesses locally,” Stavenow explained.

This love of the community is what inspired Stavenow to run for City Council this year. “I want to further my involvement in Martensville by bringing a new perspective to ABOVE: Matthew Stavenow the council table and engage in present and future community planning and decision making. My goal is to be an active and positive voice for the people of Martensville,” said Stavenow.

If elected, Stavenow has plans to work alongside his fellow council members with items such as economic development, addressing the lack of housing for seniors, and the continued maintenance and expansion of parks and recreational programs and facilities.

Stavenow would also like to see local businesses being promoted and celebrated within the community more.

Stavenow is hopeful, that if he is elected, property taxes will not need to be increased at this time. “In recent months, many individuals and families have had to deal with financial uncertainty. I believe by continuous monitoring of the budget and ensuring we do not go above target this can be accomplished.” In order to accomplish this, Stavenow stated that he would ensure the community is receiving the maximum amount of federal and provincial grants. “I trust that individuals and families should not have to stress about raised expenses in order to continue living in this amazing community,” Stavenow added.

“Getting a flu shot provides double protection—for yourself and also for those close to you,” Saskatchewan’s Chief Medical Health Officer Dr. Saqib Shahab said. “It is a vaccine that is freely available, proven to be safe, and is particularly important this year during flu season as part of our ongoing efforts to mitigate the additional challenges to our provincial health care system from COVID-19. We encourage everyone to do their part to help keep Saskatchewan’s communities as healthy as possible.”

Flu shots are recommended for those at higher risk, including seniors, people with underlying chronic health conditions, children under five, and pregnant women. Seniors often have chronic health conditions (like heart or lung disease or diabetes) and weaker immune systems, which makes them particularly vulnerable to complications from influenza.

Flu shots will be available to residents at pharmacists, physicians, local public health offices and flu clinics. Please visit https://www.saskhealthauthority.ca/Services-Locations/flu for up-to-date information on where and when clinics will take place.

There will be modifications to where and how flu shots will be administered this year.

To accommodate public health precautions due to COVID-19, there will be increased physical distancing and sanitization procedures.

Election Sees Big Spending, Big Sask.

Only one of the two incredibly expensive, vote-buying platforms from the two major parties in this 2020 Saskatchewan election will be implemented. What that means though is no matter whether we vote for the Saskatchewan Party or NDP platforms, we all will be paying for these promises for years to come.

It may come down the lesser of two spending evils. Let us begin with the platform most likely to be implemented - the Sask. Party’s platform - that will produce deficits of $2.223-billion in 2020-21, $1.695 billion in 2021-22, $1.06-billion deficit in 2022-23 $463.6-million deficit in 2023-24 before turning around a very modest surplus of $43 million in 2024-25. If implemented in such a way, it would produce the three largest deficits in our province’s history.

The source of all this red ink can be found in massive new spending - $849-million worth in the next four years. Moreover, some of its biggest costs may very well be categorized as unnecessary. They would include $263 million for the Sask. Power customer rebate, $189 million through the Saskatchewan Small Business Tax Reduction plan and $124 million for the Saskatchewan Home renovation. The Sask. Party plan also calls for a series of smaller spending initiatives including $33.6 million for reducing seniors ambulance fees, $18.7 million for reducing costs for diabetics, $8.5 million in community rink grants, $5.6 million in Veterans Services Organization and $3.5 million for increasing funding for deaf/blind services. Why the incumbent party is likely to get away with all this is because its plan is actually rather modest compared with the NDP campaign platform that would produce more and far larger deficits.

The NDP plan says its government would run deficits of $2.302 billion in 202021, $1.949 billion in 2021-22, $1.483 billion in 2022-23, $998 million in 2023-24 and $652 million in 2024-25. After four years of a Ryan Meili government, we would see the four largest deficits in Saskatchewan history and still be $600 million away from a balanced budget.

The source of these NDP government deficits would be $2.14 billion in added spending in the next term of government for some big-ticket policy changes that begin with $536-million to reduce classroom sizes.

The next biggest NDP promise is $432 million to end short-staffing in longterm and acute care followed by $206 million to prove “the best homecare in Canada.”

That is followed by another $202 million over four years to provide $25 per day daycare and increase daycare space. The NDP’s much-talked-about SGI rebate plan will cost a comparatively modest $120 million.

These four major promises are part of a 26-item list that includes $24 million to help offset the minimum wage, $21 million for child welfare reform, $21 million for poverty reduction, $21 million for First Nations housing and reconciliation and $19 million for increased funding to combat gangs.

The NDP choice to outspend the Sask. Party is just one of many things going well for Premier Scott Moe this campaign … although it should be noted things haven’t exactly gone perfectly.

The Sask. Party government is still contending with the COVID-19 outbreak that’s seeing a recent rise in case numbers.

Moe’s personal reputation has also taken a hit over issues related to his driving record when he was younger. The son of a woman killed in a 1997 car crash for which Moe was responsible says he has never properly apologized and an undisclosed 1994 DUI/ leaving the scene charge (later stayed) has hurt his image.

Where it hasn’t seemed to hurt him is in the poll where his government is still on track to an easy win on Oct. 26, but while this has left the Sask. Party in good shape for the next four years, it’s unlikely the same be said for Saskatchewan’s taxpayers.

Councillor Jamie Martens Elected into Board of Directors for Federation of Canadian Municipalities Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

The Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) states on their website that they are the national voice of local government representing 90 percent of Canadians. Having been this voice for municipal government since 1901, members of FCM include more than 2000 municipalities of all sizes from across Canada.

Each year, a Board of Directors is elected into FCM that advocate for municipalities through federal policies and procedures. The members elected into the Board of Directors must already be elected officials within their municipalities.

Every province and territory within the country has a set amount of members elected based on population, with Saskatchewan having three. Martensville City Councillor Jamie Martens was up against five other individuals and on October 15th, was officially elected into a position on the board.

Martens first attended an FCM conference two years ago and from that moment on was on a mission to learn more and decided to run for a position on the

Board. “I was interested in learning more about women in politics and thought it was such a great opportunity to bring awareness to Martensville and the surrounding area,” Martens said.
